I really can't understand what all you people are talking about here. This lecture is complete gibberish. It seems there is a mass hysteria about J. Peterson. A prophet with no coherent message, an emperor with no cloth... Apart from this lecture which is truly puzzling and his indecipherable Maps of Meaning, Peterson occasionally makes valid political arguments, to be fair, but all of it is lost under the pile of contradictory statements and hidden misogyny.

My god, that story about the kid who wouldn't eat is just downright heart-wrenching. I'm watching through the maps of meaning playlists and these lectures are very, very interesting, eye-opening, informative, and in my opinion essential not only as educational references but as meaningful life lessons packed into very well-articulated anecdotes. I don't get how that relates to the dragon story though. He started saying that story in order to explain the children book story of the dragon eating all the pancakes but I think he got lost on a tangent a bit

@@panosshady6168 Well I believe it relates because the dragon represents a problem or problems. If you ignore the dragon and pretend it doesn't exist, it becomes bigger. The point of the story seems to be that you can actually be the dragon instead of someone or something else. The mother at the end as Peterson concluded was the dragon, therefore she was the problem that was ignored.

The boy's story to relates to the dragon because his Mum was ok with him not eating instead of addressing the problem as to why he wasn't eating. The boy put a fight at one point and won and his mother decided this is who he was. She ignored what her boy could become, also why she called Tammy (Jordan's Wife) Super Mum because she got jealous that her son hugged her.

I listened to the beginning of this book at a time when, although I had been an adult and a father and husband for almost a decade, I was venturing out as a allied health traveler into a metropolis away from my family, to improve our place economically. It came at such an interesting time and really helped me understand what the details and goings on around me at a time of unknowns. Very beneficial. Haven’t listened to the roots of JBP in a while and thought I’d come back for a refresher. One of my favorite analogies found here is his beginning construction of game theory in the world. Not the same game theory of the 1950s, but rather that which children and we as adults play. We construct games and try to make the rules such that the game is desired to be played for as long as possible. And this is just me talking, but seems the best rule book for the game of life to be played on the longest timeline possible is the Bible, which obviously, JBP has really delved into with his ‘We Who Wrestle With God’ and various biblical series.

In 1969 I began my education with a graduate course in personality given by Nathan Brody whose text that went into four editions and landed him at the Presidency of the International Society of the Study of Personality originally founded by Hans Eysenck. I had studied philosophy in undergraduate school and was completely ignorant of the fact that psychology could, on the one hand, be so scientifically formulated but, on the other be so relevant to individual human experience. Dr. Peterson's work is the first time since then that I have been so impressed/inspired for the same integration of science and relevance. This course is already informing some clinical programming we are doing for 'at-risk' segments in Jersey City and Newark, NJ.

Man this talk made me tear up about 100 times. Is it just me? Just hearing and realizing why things occur just breaks me down. With the boy who wouldn't eat and the fact that he clung onto his wife breaks my heart. That was the obvious one but I can't recall one of the trivial ones. Ok I heard another one. At the end Jordan said you have to be a monster to stay alive. Brought tears to my eyes. Idk why. It feels like it cuts to the core of human existence and I feel that very deeply. I wish I had found this early in life. I'm 37 now and it's not too late but man I wish at 15 I would've had this. I've been fascinated with people and how they do what they do. I should say we. I never imagined it would be that deep and engrained in us to do some of the easy simple things we do. Jordan has really opened my eyes to it and I'm very thankful for him.

I’m a 33 year old man and this made me have a good cry. When he was talking about how difficult it can be to simply feed a little kid, I thought about my dad who adopted me. We had a lot of good times and a lot of bad times growing up. And when my mom told me he wasn’t my biological dad when I was 19, well, let’s just say that that was a dragon I wanted to pretend didn’t exist. I tried to look at it rationally and know that my mom did what she thought was best, but it took years for me to accept my dad as my dad, especially as imperfect as he was growing up. But the fact is that he was there for me, and I just realized that even though I sincerely asked God to put forgiveness in my heart a few years ago, and, to a large degree I got it, and my dad and I have a great relationship now, something about hearing how hard it is to do those simple things with a child made me realize how much my dad loved and loves me on a deeper level than I knew before. I guess I was still a little closed off to it, and didn’t really know it. So I’d like to offer one more thank you Dr. Peterson, from the bottom of my heart. I hope to be a force for good in the world in my own way, slaying dragons and whatnot.

I bought 12 Rules for Life but gave it to a friend before I got to read it and he still has it today. However, Jordan B. The part where you said that people will eat pretty much the same amount of food as anybody else made me laugh because my sister brought this guy home once. For the occasion, we had prepared a hot pot dish. Everybody ate approximately the same amount of food except this guy, who ate almost three times as much as we did! My mother, a very hospitable person, was dismayed by his insatiable hunger but couldn't help getting additionnal packets of meat from the fridge to the table for him. In addition to the two bottles of wine my father had purchased for the occasion, he also drank two more bottles by himself. I believe he would have drank more if my father didn't pretend that there was no more left. We didn't like him very much and their relationship desintegrated a few weeks later.

Doc Peterson's wife sounds like a lovely person. About the glommed-on child? Had the same experience. Had a nightmare when I was maybe 4. Mother had I would say in retrospect a sort of Asperger's and she was normally vnot affectionate at all. But I had a terrible nightmare and I still remember it :-) but anyway, I screamed my bloody head off. My mom came and got a sleeping bag or something and we slept on the floor, but I remember WHEN SHE TOOK ME INTO HER ARMS to comfort me: it was literally like entering Heaven. I remember I was amazed at the feeling. It was so healing and necessary. That time in heaven was so important to me and I really think it inoculated me and let grow a center core of happiness. And I've never lost that.

I could start off by saying thank you, but I could write books on how much this man has helped me and others, so i will just keep it at...Thank you :D I had a similar experience to that kid who refused to eat. My mom told me I stopped eating verity food around the age of 3, and she thinks it's because she fed me a cake and i half choked on it but i doubt it. I only ate meat, potato, rice, pasta, and bred. I stayed like that for a long time until the age of like 14 where I tried pizza and then i that every day for a little while (not so healthy). Now I remember this clearly, 2 weeks before 2019 new years i traveled to Florida and decided to eat everything new i could get my hands on, so every day we went to a new restaurant and tried new things and i ate the hole plate every time. Each time it felt like cutting a chain off with my mouth. I had just turned 18. I'm 21 and can confidently eat and try any new food.

Jordan looks so tired and worn out in this vdeo...stretched thin. I know the video quality is not the greatest, but you can sense that he was probably under a ton of stress. He appears much healthier and happier now. Glad he decided to take the path he did. He has opened the eyes of billions of people and his genius is a massive benefit to mankind. People will be studying him the way we study figures from the ancient past.

Dear Professor Peterson, You are very talented at weaving connections between different pantheons of knowledge. In many ways, I think you are spot on. I agree that the modern male mystique is threatened by the modern era of liberated (and free thinking) women. Loss of privileged always hurts to some degree. What I don't understand is why you think that gender is rigid, or should be. I have been a gender bender my whole life. I am female, but I have rarely identified with the female gender script. My confidence, intellect and presentation mark me as different from other women. I didn't do this on purpose. It's just how I was drawn. The biggest critics of my confidence and intellect have been women, which has always broken my heart. But there have been men who blasted me for not knowing my "place." My question for you is, why should I defer to men? I am what I am, a heterosexual woman who happens to be confident and successful. And educated (I worked my way through undergraduate and law school). I don't really even think about how I present, until someone brings it up. I think that men are hurting too. I agree that there is a crisis of the human spirit. I just don't blame women or social progress. I tend to blame the spirit killing nature of unmoderated capitalism and its attendant classism.

The equal food portions are an interesting topic. When I grew up my experience was always that a friend would eat a handful of chips when I took a single one.

There are so many factors to this though, like for example my family was large and very poor so we often did not have enough food to eat, when we did get a special treat like chips, we'd only have a few so there is enough for everyone and also so you can thoroughly enjoy. Then throw me in a with a more privileged kid and of course they are going to eat a lot more chips because their conditioned attitude towards the food in question is inherently different. Not saying this is the case for you, just pointing out that it's still a complex process.

The story about Mikhaila and her dream about trash in the stream seems almost prophetic, given that she has literally become famous for her elimination diet...she has cleaned the "trash" out of her own body. I wonder if that moment had a stronger effect on her than either of them realized.

Fantastic material. I watched over 20 videos of him so far, most of them 1.5hrs long. There's so much knowledge to solidify so I'll keep watching. The only flaw I note from my perspective is his overuse of superlatives with negative terms, like ".. and that's *horrible*, *horrific*, *detrimental*, *so destructive*, *really bad*". It's not that these words don't fit, they do from a certain perspective but I believe toning it down a little bit would make people worry less. Like eg. saying that it's "horrible" that you don't immediately understand the needs of your partner and he or she can't articulate them, is kinda over the top. Like take it easy, figure it out calmly and don't freak out. However if you use these strong words to describe such a situation you don't make it easier to handle.

Mr. Peterson is smart enough to be interesting. I will probably listen to most of his work. I especially appreciate his talks on halucinagenic drugs, religion, aliens, ect. I started reading Maps of Meaning through audio book while I was driving. I was like "Great I just finished 12 Rules For Life now I can move on to another great book". Well because of the graphs and the complexity of the book I couldn't listen and drive. I'm excited to watch this while I read to fully comprehend this!
