Great video Jason! Very interesting comparison! I didn't realize the 2 cars were so similar in their dimensions. My only complaint when I drove the CLA45 was that the dual clutch was slow to engage from a stop. Maybe they fixed that in the past year for the GLA45. Did you notice any slow clutch engagement from a stop during your driving?

kenmastersmaster So the "autofaggot" transmission on F1 and Indycars makes them non enthusiast cars?
@paulashton59909 жыл бұрын
kenmastersmaster All current production Ferraris also have "autofaggot" transmissions, so by your definition are not enthusiasts cars. BTW Golf R has a single plate clutch system because the dual clutch system of the GTi cannot handle the power of the R. You seriously underestimate the cost of an F1 car. You also avoid the question. Do you seriously believe that F1 cars are non enthusiast cars because of their transmission systems?
@EngineeringExplained9 жыл бұрын
subaruwrxfan Thanks Matt! Same story, slow to engage from a stop. Acts very similar to a manual transmission in that sense. It's almost like it leaves the clutch disengaged (rather than slipping) unless you press on the gas enough. My guess is it would have to do with preventing wear, but I'm sure it's a wet clutch so probably not much of an issue. Dunno.

Full time AWD in the Subaru can chew up some MPG, but I think the main reason is just that the EJ257 in the STI and the current one is an old motor. Hopefully Subaru can use the new FA20 in the STI for a better powerband and fuel economy, especially considering the massive competition from the Focus RS and a host of AWD hot hatches.
@MTLJack5 жыл бұрын
That and every new car nowadays with turbo are direct fuel injection, therefore it burns the fuel more efficiently. The wrx sti still has the old engine back in 2004 where fuel economy wasn't much of a factor if you wanted a turbo car. Today, we all want something fast but still has decent fuel economy. Before someone says if you can afford a fast car, you can afford the gas... That is not true. Most people who has money for a fast car are quite cheap so they want a good fuel economy fast car still.

I bought the GLA45 for one major reason and that is the harmony of the AMG engineering solution .. and I reckon it saved my neck already. I went outside the envelope (quite a bit ! ) and got it sideways under brakes into a corner; but the balance and 'thrust vectoring' got me out of the problem surprisingly quickly and without fuss. You get what you pay for !

I couldn't agree more about the mpg issue. It was okay 6 years ago but Subaru needs to fix that. The Golf R is extremely efficient and has the same power as an STi and gets over 30mpg. Other than that the STi is great but the mpg is one of the main reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
@gogutzy7 жыл бұрын
if you want mpg there's always a wrx with a cvt out there. the sti refers to extreme performance, not everyday drivability and mpg.

My sti gets about 35mpg on the motorway and about 29 on fast wide open roads only killer is in town lucky if I get 22mpg. It's really all down to how you drive it and the quality of fuel. Here in the UK 98 ron petrol is readily available which helps a lot.

Awesome review, I completely agree. The Golf R is similar to the AMG, a quick, nimble, yet comfortable car. I'm interested in comparing the AMG to the R, but I do understand its more expensive. You should get your hands on an R to compare to an STi and see if you feel the same way or not.
@PhilbyFavourites3 жыл бұрын
In the UK the Golf R is a car high on the car stealers’ list. It will go to middle European countries as soon as they’ve stolen it from your drive. For some reason they don’t covet the AMG GLA45, that’s a huge bonus in my eyes. I’m into my third year of ownership of a 2018 facelift model GLA45 and it’s proved a stunning reliable daily driver. A proper “Q” car and flies (very quickly) under the radar…

My dream car is the WRX hatch, but then I found the GLA45 AMG and thought when I'm a lot more successful then I would definitely buy the Mercedes. It is definitely a more impressive car, and more professional. The Subaru is sort of the 20-30 year old crowd.

bbbl67 Parts are crazy expensive. For example a early or mid 2000s AMG is a very dangerous purchase. When small things break its not so bad, but if a turbo needs to be replaced it would cost nearly as much as the car. Look at some 10 year old amg cars. A twin turbo V12 for 25k is tempting but you'll spend another 25 in 2 years for maintenance.

Engineering Explained you should test this with the 2015 sti. I've owned 4 Subarus now 3 of which were wrx/stis and the 2015 fixes all the problems you mentioned. I went from an 08 sti to the 15 launch edition and the interiors are like day and night not only is it a better interior but because of the quality of the elements used there is almost no rattling or vibrations that the 08-14s had. Just my two cents but I feel like comparing a new car to a last year model car isn't really a fair fight.
@whereisbenzo9 жыл бұрын
Jason you have to keep in mind that the engine in the STi is 20+ years old! Back then 17/23 with 300hp was pretty good. Today not so much, but the FA engines are now putting out power numbers higher than the EJ (tuned for tuned both of them) and they are getting better fuel economy.
@EngineeringExplained9 жыл бұрын
The '15 STI still uses the EJ257, so they're definitely directly comparable.
@whereisbenzo9 жыл бұрын
I know I was just saying that don't expect wonderful fuel economy numbers, because you're dealing with old tech. I really hope they put the FA20 (with extra power) if not a new FA25 in the 2017 STi. Also would be easy since FA's can work with EJ transmissions. So I don't see the reason why they wouldn't do so.
@nightVzn9 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping to see a FA25. Something else to differentiate the STI from the WRX, more room to boost the engine without making it too high-strung, and probably still room for decent gas mileage improvements. I mean, turboing the 3.6-liter flat-6 would be fun, but that's just a dream.
@whereisbenzo9 жыл бұрын
It's funny because even the flat 6's work with EJ transmissions. So Subaru could go either way. But from what I've seen there really isn't much room left when people swap in 6's so I think we're most likely to see an FA25 in the 2017 STi (hopefully with no direct injection).
@whereisbenzo9 жыл бұрын
Well they codesigned a new motor for the BRZ/FRS with Toyota. Took that motor and tweaked it and put in the new WRX, so I don't understand why they wouldn't just tweak that motor as well and put it in the STi. It seems like they're well funded, and the new STi has been getting a lot of shit from reviewers saying the motor is dated.

Good video. Would you say the VW Golf R is the midpoint between the AMG and the STi?
@EngineeringExplained9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Wallace I'd say the Golf R is more a direct competitor with the STI, as they're priced similarly.

Nice comparison, as always :) You can get a lot of speakers and petrol for 12000 though :D

that amg exhaust...i still want to get my hands on a 2012 c63 coupe. best looking c63 imo

Agreed, the W204 is way better looking than the W205, because it looks a lot mot agressive and sporty than the almost too elegant W205.

Have you done any exhaust mods to your STi yet?

The gap between the gears seems huge in the mercedes ! At 5:36 and 7:10 it "sounds like" the engine struggles after the gear change, and the tach seems to go from 6k RPM to 3.5k RPM. Are the gaps so huge in the Subaru ? The difference in fuel economy might be partially explained by a difference in gear ratio.
@derbigpr5009 жыл бұрын
Yak Eru Gear ratios are perfect, he just lets go off the throttle after changing up. This engine doesn't struggle in any gear, he's just not flooring it. It produces maximum torque under 2000 rpm....it pushes you into the seat if you floor it in 5th or 6th gear at 2000 rpm.
@Yakeru359 жыл бұрын
derbigpr500 ok ! I was suspecting something like that : coming from Mercedes a "struggling engine" would have been surprising :-) But maximum torque under 2000 rpm ! It's like a diesel engine ! Is there a torque curve for that engine somewhere ? Because I am really curious to see how it looks like :-)

Yak Eru I actually loved the gearing in this. Very aggressive in the lower gears, geared for efficiency in the higher gears. The ratios are decently tight 1-3, and when you're on the highway you can cruise around 1500-2000 RPM vs about 3K in the Subaru.

Ther's one area though where STi basically stomps the Merc and pretty much every other car to the ground - engine sound. Nothing vroom-vrooms as sweetly as a Subaru ;)

Completely agree with your comment on MPG's... In todays world the STI is not a competitive performer for the person who daily drives it. What was once chalked up to 'because race car' has now been overcome with technology in other cars. I had a 2010, and the only upside was that I only lost about 2 MPGs when I was getting on it. Still loved the car, but it eats at your mind when your contemplating a 300 mile weekend trip :( I'm waiting for a new engine (and hatch?), and then I will buy new :)

You buy an STI because you want a good manual gearbox, hydraulic steering, ample power, great handling and a real engine note. It's one of the last "real" four door cars, and I wouldn't be surprised if it loses the hydraulic steering if they go to the FA engine. Out of that list, GLA45 has a great real engine note and good power. That's it.
