I went and got a 2014 Ecodiesel last year for towing a 6000lb camper. It works fantastic for what I use it for, fantastic fuel economy as well. I recently towed my camper with a 700lb quad in the box (about 8000lb total with tanks) from Red Deer AB to Ottawa ON and burned $510 in fuel plus 1.5 jugs of urea ($12 jug). That same trip in my gas normally aspirated truck cost just under $1100 and I didn't have to listen to a screaming engine the whole way but had no problem keeping up with traffic. Say what you want about the Ecodiesel but in my case, the option will pay for itself fairly quick and I don't drag race my 4x4 anyway. I will take those numbers and possibly pay a bit more for fuel depending on where I'm at.

Well I just got back from doing and 834 mile tow with my 2014 Ram 1500 ecodiesel big horn 4x4 with 3.92 gears. I have to say I am very impressed with the results. I drove from Salem, OR to salt lake city, ut with a mini cooper on the trailer(4985#) and just about 800# in the bed of tires and tools. Overall average mileage was 16.2 mpg. My best tank was 18.1 mpg and my worse was 15.1mpg. I varied from 65 to 75 mph and areas where I had to slow down for curvy downhills and climbs. So being that most of the drive had a lot of hills and not a steady flat sections. I'm very happy with the performance of my new truck. Beasts the geek out of any gas engine and I know it would beat the ecoboost on mpg towing anything. It might not be a rocket but when u can get 400+ a tank loaded and 600+ unloaded. That's my rocket past the ecoboost as it has to stop and fuel up more often.

@Napoli Hools no never did, never had an issue. I pulled the max capacity with toy hauler I had but the wife wanted to get into a fourth wheel so I stepped up to a Cummins. I loved the eco diesel. Average 25 mpg.

@Napoli Hools they are in their 3rd generation for the engine now taking care of past issues. My buddy runs the service at the local dodge dealer and they haven’t had any issues with the new set up. It’s all up to you on what you want to do. Always remember, only the negative gets mentioned anywhere drowning out the good. There isn’t a manufacture that hasn’t had one form of an issue or another. Even the Cummins can fall prey

Ok, so it towed and worked fine while getting better mileage. I don't see the 1 minute difference being a big deal is real life usage. I mean honestly, if you were towing a camper on vacation out there and it took one minute longer to get over a pass, would you even notice or care? I wouldn't. As long as it's pulling straight and smooth, I'd be getting exactly what one should expect. I'm a Ford guy, but nothing wrong with this Ram at all, nice job Ram! If I didn't work for Ford, and needed a truck, this would be fine.

I can agree with your comment to a point. The issue arises when you are trying to pass a big rig going up that steep grade and the truck just does not have a lot of power in reserve to do it. Sure one can argue about the times run being sort of a mute point if one gets there faster than the other...but the key factor is how easily the truck made the run. Did they have to keep it floored the whole way...did they have power in reserve, etc. I myself have a 3.5L ecoboost and so far it has been great towing. Several times during the run in this video the truck would flat out not shift and at the end of the run they got as low as 45 mph. Why? Because they are so focused in making it beat the ecoboost that they are willing to sacrifice horsepower to do it. (Not to mention it has an eight speed transmission) By the way I bought my F150 because it was the best option for my needs...not because it was a Ford product. Now...when Nissan unleashes their 2016 Titan XD with the V-8 5.0L Cummins diesel (310HP and 555 lb.-ft. of torque) that will be one Ike gauntlet test I will be waiting to see!! I am sure that truck will handily whoop the pants off of a lot of trucks out there.

I do find it odd however, which I failed to mention, that RAM only gave them a 2 wheel drive for the test and it also had higher gearing. I will take power in reserve losing a little milage any day over milage with no power.

Roman said 30% down on power....guys come on! Please do your research. General rule of thumb for turbo motors is 3% loss per 6000ft. So at 12000ft you wil be losing about 6%, not 30. Naturally aspirated engines lose about 27% at 9000ft. The general rules of thumb. Per 6000ft.....N/A loses about 18%, supercharged motor lose about 8% and turbocharged motors lose around 3%. Eco diesel is turbocharged.

Turbocharging doesn't work that way. Turbocharged engines have a critical altitude and can maintain full power up to that altitude (it's often around 15,000 feet for gasoline engines). For diesels, the critical altitude is usually quite low, then power will start dropping off at a rate that depends on a whole range of things (the efficiency of the turbocharging system, for one thing). These guys were clearly in touch with the engineers at Dodge, and I'm sure they knew exactly how much power the engine was making for this test.

I had an opportunity for a good comparison between the 2016 2.7L Ecoboost and the a 2015 Ecodiesel. My buddy just purchased a 2016 Ecoboost F-150 2.7L and made a trip I did 2 months earlier from Tampa bay Fl. to Robbinsville N.C. and back towing his Polaris Slingshot (aprrox 3500#'s trailer and vehicle). I was towing my 2014 370Z (5700#'s Trailer and vehicle). Other than the weight difference, he didn't have to travel an extra 80 miles (round trip) through Tampa/St. Petersburg stop-n-go traffic that I did (I live in Pinellas Co. Fl.) since he lives in Land-O-Lakes Fl. He only managed 13.7 mpg with the 2016 F-150 Ecoboost 2.7L for the trip vs. my Ecodiesel returned 19.8 mpg for the entire trip. The Ecodiesel easily merges up to 70-80mph towing, no problems pulling up hills, plenty of extra power to pass and returns 30% better fuel economy than the Ford.

Hasty One if you are pulling up mountains towing 8k in a half ton between the 5.0 , and the 3.5 eco boost I’m taking the eco boost all day . Maybe if you are towing up mountains pulling max load I could see that , but the ecoboost is far superior towing just in my opinion. Anyone towing that heavy with half ton probably should move up to 3/4 ton , or go half ton diesel.

I towed my 2014 370Z (3500#)on my equipment trailer (2200#) from Tampa FL to Robbinsville NC, round trip 19.8 mpg. I run 73-75mph on the interstate and usually 5 over on back roads. 1755 miles round trip divided by moving time, 52mph average over the whole trip. Not towing I get 29mpg highway and 20mpg around town (densely populated Pinellas Co.) Only paid $33,600 for and go 450 miles on just under 23 gallons of fuel. Here in Tampabay FL. diesel is only 10-12¢ more than regular. 2001 2500HD with 6.0L and 60# less tq only got 10.5mpg cty and 14mpg hyw (8-9mpg towing). Love my EcoDiesel.

I did a similar distance recently from Tennessee to Oklahoma 1600 miles round trip. Had 5500# towing. So not as much but similar. I averaged 60 mph. At 17.5 mpg in my 2014 f150 3.5L ecoboost. Not too far off :)

I purchased a 2016 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel back in March. I'd never owned a diesel of any kind. This summer I took and extended trip from Texas to Yosemite and back pulling a small 2,750 lb travel trailer. I picked the scenic routes through mountains. Spent 19 days on the road. I also had loaded the bed to about 750 lbs of gear. Of course, the tiny trailer and bed load isn't near the truck's capacity. But my other 1500 trucks, Fords and Rams, all with the big gasoline engines, would not have done so well especially at 25.5 mpg. Yes, the average for the trip was 25.5 mpg. I can't compare the Ecodiesel with the Ecoboost but in my mind...diesel longevity over gasoline engine life expectancy is a no-brainer. Especially when thinking about the Ecoboost. Smaller gasoline engine with turbos sounds like higher temperatures and shorter life. I have no data to support that. I wanted a 1/2 ton that could do the job of a average gasoline powered 1/2 ton but gets great fuel economy with the longevity of diesel engines. I guess the verdict is still out on the longevity AND the reliability. Certainly the maintenance costs (oil changes cost about $130, DIY) are more than the Ecoboost. I absolutely love my Ecodiesel. And based on the Ike Gauntlet test, I plan to purchase a larger travel trailer in the 7000lb loaded range.

This whole thread is just a dick measuring/pissing contest. I've owned 2 F-150's in my lifetime. I don't tow, use my truck for hauling cordwood, helping people move things. I've waited 30 years for a new truck. Always, the wife got the new vehicle. She hauled the kids, ect, and that's that. I got the beater or whatever. But this time, I chose the new vehicle. I looked for months, and months, and have always liked Mopar products. I chose the Ram, for it's fuel economy, and style. An SLT Quadcab, with a little chrome, and the ecodiesel, and I am a happy guy. It's a beautiful truck. will haul what I need, and rides like a limo. Guess I'm not into the usual haters of certain brands. Just bought what made me smile. Good luck to those in this thread, jamming and slamming each other for their choices of trucks. I have a 2016 Ram EcoDiesel BigHorn 4x4 CrewCab. I tow about once a month my 16.5' Maxie trailer, 5' box blade. 32hp Yanmar EX3200 tractor and 5' brush hog. Not only does it tow it like a tanka toy, I average between 19.4 and 20.9mpg on the hwy doing 75mph. The total trailer and load weight is just over 7400lbs, even more when i add my posthole digger and it still gets the same mileage and i have almost 21k miles on my truck.

I'm not sure the rock guard makes that big of a difference. There is, after all, a "wind sail" sitting on the trailer, a lot higher than the metal sheet, which means even air moving over the top of the vehicle is hitting it. That being said, I'd like to see them do a test with the f-150 with the exact same configuration.

I bought a 2014 ED for my 150mile round trip daily for work (the cost of living in the country). I average 26mpg and get over 600miles per tank. It can pull whatever I want to put on my trailer (whenever I need it, not too often). It's the quietest, smoothest ride I've ever experienced in a truck. I couldn't care less about HP or 0-60 times. I don't buy a truck to go fast.

This EcoDiesel sounds like a great engine but the 2.7 Ecoboost is the base engine in most configurations and the EcoDiesel is a $4,000 option.

I have an Eco diesel and I live in the Mid South, so not much need for towing up mountains. I will say that I towed my wrangler the other day for about a 150 miles and averaged 20.5 mpg. It was flat riding for the most part, but it towed just fine. Put it in tow mode and hit the cruise at 65 mph. No struggles and it was about 100 degrees out side. Did fine. I will also say that the nice thing is that the mpg I see with out towing in the city stays around 22.5 mpg in real driving scenarios. If I take it over the road for trips though, I can get upward of 32 mpg and better. Way better than EPA rating. Sweet spot is at 65 mph. I drove from Memphis to Tampa late last year and had to fill up about 30 miles outside Tampa, at least that's when the fuel light came on. Probably could have made it, but who needs to take the chance. Overall, very pleased with the pick-up. If you check what other Eco-diesel owners are saying, you would probably see that they are getting better mileage than the EPA rating claims. But, I'm not drag racing or towing daily either. Just needed a reliable pickup for the long term.

I have never driven the ecodiesel but do drive a Ram 5500 with a Cummins in it and it is nothing for it to get around 225 on the temp gauge. It is a 2018 and has done it since day one.

One thing to remember is that most people won't be towing up a grade this steep in the mountains of Colorado. I have a 4,700 lb camper and this truck would tow it just fine. I have a 2013 Ram 1500 with the Hemi but have seriously been considering the Ecodiesel because of the fuel mileage. My wife and I like to road trip and this truck would suit our needs perfectly. I personally think the Hemi is a better engine but it's a gas hog, especially while towing. Half the time when we go places the truck just sits and we take the car because it doesn't use as much gas. With the mileage the Ecodiesel gets I wouldn't mind driving it all the time.

every time I see a brand argument in the coments, it's the same shit every time. so I'm proposing that we make a rule not to argue over which brand is best. all it does is cause people stress and it achieves nothing. everyone has there own preferences and believes. and not everyone's needs are the Same, and people are going to buy what suits there needs and what they like. and to set the record strait, the only reason ford has the best selling trucks is because of there fleet sales, they sell fleets of vehicles to a company for dirt cheap just to achieve sales numbers and the other reason so many companies buy fleets of ford's is because ford mechanics are common and easy to find, and the ford's customer service is pretty good as well. when you realize these things, you see that "best selling" doesn't always mean better product.

Grand Junction to Black Hawk and back, pulling a 7,200 pound 29 foot travel trailer and getting 13.5 to the gallon. That is over Vail pass and Eisenhower tunnel (Ike gantlet) twice. Not sure any other truck can beat that. Plus the Ecodiesel pulls with confidence and ease and comfortable to drive. My truck is a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel Larime crew cab long bed with 3.92 rear. Then there's the air suspension, I drove every brand and the Ram has the best ride, by far. Yet still works like a truck should. I even like the shift knob, (hockey puck) to Nathan. Gives you a lot more room in the center console. For me it has everything that a truck should, and with comfort and style, with the best interior of all trucks. If you want to go 70 up hill buy a sports car.

Why is there a rock guard on the front of the trailer on this tow and not one on the Ford 2.7 EB tow? Major difference in drag and this is not apples to apples. Can't compare the two.

Just as i suspected..Slow. I knew that it would be pulling that hill at over 3k rpm.. Hows all that torque working for you now? According to my calculations it cost the ecodiesel $3.18 (40cents/Mile) in diesel and the 2.7 cost $3.91(50 cents/Mile) in gas. That is going to take a while to offset the $4000 diesel addon. With proven reliability over the Ford well because of physics I'd pay extra for a longer lasting truck as I already said before I don't tow why buy either when the 5.7 and 5.0 are availiable. Say what you want $4000 for a longer lasting vehicle is worth it. Regular fuel and forced induction lead to premature engine wear and pinging, neither are good for any engine.

If you are going to compare two trucks towing capability use the same damn setup!! With the Ram you had a giant wall on the front of the trailer and removed it from the F150 2.7l Ecoboost tow test. Anyone that’s ever towed anything with a big flat surface behind them knows that it will cause the motor to work even more….This video does not reflect both trucks appropriately, redo one or the other with the same setup and then compare your data!!!

Chris Rowlison I agree with most of your comments but the last one is a bit ignorant. The cummins has 385hp but 6.7L the ecodiesel is 3L with 240hp. So its actually more power per liter... 2nd who are you to say the cummins has more research behind it? The eco diesel platform has been in use around the world for years. It also gets 28mph empty. Plenty of research has gone into the powertrain design.

Just a note on the fuel economy, if you were to run the Ford or any of the others at 50mph up the gauntlet what do you suspect the mpg would be? I understand it was at WOT the entire run but I suspect the poor trans programing (programed for mpg efficiency) wouldn't let it downshift to get greater speed. The ford had power but also stayed in the power band. The ram seemed to perform more like past gm products where it won't downshift because it's more worried about getting max efficiency

So far the ecodiesel has a worse track record than the 2.7 ecoboost as far as reliability goes. The 2.7 also is much, much faster and is less expensive. The ecodiesel's maintenance is also going to be more expensive and the price of fuel (while it does fluctuate) is generally more expensive for the ecodiesel. As for the fuel test you mentioned, there is a difference between miles per gallon and cost per mile. The 2.7 wins cost per mile, making the fuel test irrelevant.

I just purchased a 2018 ecodiesel. Pull a bout 6-8 times a month that weighs 3k pounds. My MPG readings is saying I’m averaging 10mpg at 68mph ... not getting anywhere near what some of the comments say. On highway at 72mph my MPG reads 23mpg .... I have to go 65mph to get 25mpg ... maybe this is because truck is new and needs a little break in period?? Thoughts .....

I just bought this same truck, well, almost. Identical except for the rear-end which is a 3.55:1. I will be towing 4200-4400 lbs with it and I think it will do pretty good. Certainly better than my 1500 V-8 Magnum, as far as gas goes.

@@isaiahschubert804 It's been a good truck for us, tows well, gets incredible mileage and has been dependable. When we bought it diesel prices were below gasoline prices. Yesterday, I paid $6.10 per gal as compared to around $2.25 per 5 years ago.

What people fail to realize is the diesel can run like that 24hrs a day 7 days a week for 100s of thousands miles. Do that to the eco boost and it would be wore out. It's about longevity people. Nobody that takes heavy towing seriously uses a damn turbo gas motor. They are ticking time bombs when stressed like a diesel. They are better off crawling mall parking lots!

I'd like to know the highway mileage while it is not towing anything. To me, a half-ton pickup is NOT for towing 13 thousand pounds. That's why they make the 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks.

I'm actually a bit shocked at how underwhelming this thing was. As a commuter and not towing much this would be a really nice option. But I think if I was towing with any regularity I'd go with the 2.7L EcoBoost based on these videos. It might not get as good of gas mileage but you're going to have to travel a whole lot of miles to make up for the premiums you're paying for the Ecodiesel as well as the fuel. Looking forward to seeing the Golden Hitch results. My guess is it'll go to the 3.5L EcoBoost as it's the quickest, towed the best and gets respectable mpg's. Just my observation at this point.

You realize they could put the Jeep into sport mode and it would've kept the revs up higher... MPG would've dropped to ~4 to match the FORD and it probably would've dropped that extra minute back off. Facts. The Ecodiesel is also tuned very moderately from the factory. Push a few more psi out of the turbo and it is a much better performer than the ford diesel. There is no replacement for displacement+turbo size lol. 3.0 and larger turbo will be the 2,7l smaller turbo FORD. Ford just tunes their truck more aggressively and higher revving shift logic which sacrifices MPG for performance.

ZepG I own an ecodiesel. Previously owned an 11 f150 ecoboost, and a 13 raptor. Raptor was lowest cost of ownership over 50k miles. Ecodiesel so far will be right behind it. You need to look at cost per mile and resale value. My ecodiesel is running a cost per mile of .13. A 2.7 eco is running .13 / mile. Check out fuelly to see.

No drama, that's what makes it a nice diesel. I used to own a 1982 VW Jetta diesel with a *52* *horsepower* engine. There would have been a whole lot of drama taking that pass with that car. It's better for so many to have a Ram 1500 rather than a larger, more expensive 2500 with a Cummins.

I would trade 2 mpg for a truck that is much quicker, way better at towing, and lighter weight (meaning less wear on the truck and better handling) any day of the week. People are going to say diesel engines will last longer. That's no issue anymore. If you take care of your motor it will last 300k miles plus. Also, Considering there is only a 1-2 mpg difference between Ford and Ram, it is cheaper to drive the Ford because gas is cheaper than diesel.

resale. we all know f150's are worthless after only a few years. just look at good quality diesels in the market right now. Grand Cherokee's with the 3.0L Benz, 5.9/6.7L Cummins, even those ugly Jeep Liberty diesels sell nicely if you can find one. Same will go for this truck, used market will be all over these trucks in a few years

I don't know where your facts are coming from. I also don't know why you are comparing a half ton truck to suvs, a german car and a heavy duty 3/4 ton truck. But I would be ignorant to say I don't see the point you are trying to make. Resale is one of the least desired traits when buying a new vehicle. If you were worried about how much a vehicle depreciates you would not buy a new vehicle, considering EVERY brand new vehicle depreciates a considerable amount as soon as it is purchased. In summary if you want to save money one don't buy a new vehicle and two don't buy a used diesel because apparently they are overpriced.

Read a lot of these comments. Here's my take for what it's worth. I was a 5.9 Cummins guy for 1.6 mm miles over 4 trucks, in 2001 and newer 2500's all 4x4. Sold my last almost 2 years ago and got a 2014 1500 Eco. 2whl dr. Had read about the longevity of the 3.0 ltr's use in Europe (or a derivative of) and actually, my only concern was using the the damn knob. I have gotten over the knob. On trips from north San Antonio to south Miami, and another to the Chicago area we average 30.8-31.9 mpg at 75mph. On cruise. Towing a tandem axel 14 ft Vnose with 7 ft. sides inside up and back loaded, (approx. 5200lbs up, and 6500 lbs back) we averaged 13.8 at 65mph. I experience no wind noise, very quiet and smooth ride, enough acceleration to squeal my tires any time at the stop sign, and the milage with 37,000 miles on it now, is amazing. My wife pulls a 7600lb 24 travel trailer for our grandkids and has gotten anywhere from 13.9 to 18.6 on a trip. I also use it to pull a 16 ft flat bed trailer and 7800b Bobcat. It has zero problems pulling in the big hills here in central Texas. If you want the RAM to stay level in the back, invest in a $100 dollar pair of air bags for the coil springs My air refilled is to the right of my license in the back bumper. Keep the air down to about 5lbs and your ride remains superior, slip 25-28lbs in and you have a great firm ride that's level. My friend Larry with the F150 Platinum, loves my truck. He LOVES it. Compliment ? I love it. Has the same amount torque and 5 more hp than my 5.9 Cummins had in 2001 !!! I feel the weight of my '01 Ram 4x4 and 5.9 would do better, but maybe my memories deceive me. Great product !

The eco diesel is a wonderful motor but they need to fix a major issue with these engines where the motor comes out of timing. One of the main cam gears will come loose on the camshaft with too much abuse. With that fixed the motors are super reliable

There's a reason why Ford had to make their trucks out of aluminum. it's because they are using a small displacement 6 cylinder gas engine and they know for longevity purposes they have to sacrifice somewhere and that is in the alloy of the truck. These small Gass engines don't have a robust bottom end like diesels do. They require top end power to make up the difference. And that will take its toll on the life of the engine. I don't believe in 15 years you will dare buy a nice used ford ecoboost with 150k on it. But the Diesel will be very desirable still. JMO.

I know there is no replacment for displacement. You can turbo the hell out of small engines to get the same numbers, but to make the same numbers you WILL produce more heat. And HEAT is the number 1 killer of any engine. Diesel engines run much cooler by nature of the fuel itself. I judge a powertrain over how it performs over 100k miles working everyday. Not holding your foot on the floor like A drag race for 5 miles. That's just idiotic. The proof is in the industry. You won't see small displacment turbo pickups in the oilfield or any heavy duty industry. Those trucks aren't biult to work everday. The only place you'll see them is at the Mall, or walmart parking lots.

kyle stewart but these aren't heavy duty work trucks, these are family trucks and light duty trucks. You don't buy these trucks for heavy towing, the engine will last just fine with regular maintenance. In the age of mechanized production, the powertrain is hardly ever a major issue, I'd me more concerned about the infotainment, connectivity, sensors, and interior/exterior finishing holding up.

@@vs-1993 Man I am so sorry for the late reply! I actually bought out a state in Nevada as I live in California a 2012 Ford F-250 gasser with 70,000 mi on it for $21,000. Here in California they were asking 8 to 10 grand more. I'm super impressed with the extra cab the towing ability and payload capacity. Having said that and coming from a Lexus RX 350 this ride is really harsh but it's a truck you should know that going into it. And I kind of did but I didn't expect it to be this harsh. Now I've taken this truck with 3,000 lb of gravel in the truck bed and it was a smooth ride. I took my 23FB Airstream camping in the truck pulled the camper very smoothly on our maiden voyage. Even the wife took a turn at the wheel and was pleasantly surprised. Why did I decide on the Ford? I've heard and read a lot of electrical problems about Ram and I'm not in a financial situation where I can fix all the Gremlins. That's also why I didn't get a diesel. Cheers!

Hey nathan, please stop sugar coating the deficiency on this truck. Now, you were amazed about mpg? The ecodiesel did 1.7 mpg better then ecoboost. Ok, but did you considered once it starts to regenerate? I have read, ( might be wrong) it burns between 1/1.5 gallon per regeneration. Plus the higher cost diesel. Plus the urea. Plus the premium of the diesel motor. At the end, im pretty sure the ecodiesel will be more expensive. No savings in fuel economy. Also lets be honest, with all new emisions crap, diesel trucks give bunch of problems. No matter what brand. I truly believe in a half ton truck is worthless a diesel. Diesel is for heavy duttyyl trucks. Ecoboost have prooven to have more than enough power to handle the job.

It did about 50% than the f150 which is significant. Also for everyday daily driving the ecodiesel would trump the f-150 in fuel economy. Note at the beginning of the video it was showing over 32mpg on the 43 mile loop they usually do.

Liometers are never that accurate. I agree, ecodiesel will give more milles per the gallon. Think!!!!! 1. How much is the premium to buy a diesel over a gas engine 2. The avg Half-Ton owner is going to drive 70% empty and the other 30% will be light towing and light hauling. Diesel engines are know for there low torque that makes for towing beast but a diesel are also known for there MPG's that is clearly what RAM is shooting for here. You read it wrong, instant consumption is 1-1,5 mpg worse during DPF regeneration but it lasts for a few miles. Overall comsumption is basically the same. Urea is cheap as dirt (because it's mostly water) and you rarely need to refill it. Truck itself is more expensive but first - they're selling it in higher trims only plus diesels have much better resale value. Fuel onsumption is much better, look at the 2:06 part: 32.2 average mpg. That's almost 10 mpg that F-150 2.7 Ecoboost. So unless you're towing 7000lbs regularily, Ecodiesel is quite sensible choice.

Max towing capacity for this truck is 8,840lbs (4:50). It's only pulling 7,200lbs. it could only average 50mph or less and when it went through the lights at the end (14:10) it was only going 45mph. Put another 1600lbs on it and I'm not sure it would make it to the top.

I don't think I would buy either of these trucks if I was towing frequently. For me, the 2.7 EB and 3.0 ED are ideal for the family-type truck where I need a crew cab, 4x4, with good mileage for safety, adverse weather, and shoving stuff in the bed. For towing, I would prefer the 3.5 EB or the Hemi. Go ahead and throw the 5.0 in there too. With the amount of aftermarket parts being made for the 5.0 in the Mustang, I have a hunch that F-150 5.0 may be the cheapest to service long-term.

4 cams and a whole lot more parts invloved in the heads. The 5.0 is definitely not an engine you want to fix if something did go wrong. They also don't have a good powerband for a truck. You're better off getting the 3.5 ecoboost or the GM 6.2.

2.7 EB F-150 is a revelation even though some foolish magazines and brands told, its not such a big thing -Like it hit 0-60 under 7.0s which even a big v8 failed to do -It did 4.3 mpg(sure its bad) but was supremely fast and had just 6 gears to play with -and had loads more power under the drivers foot -what if the F-150 2.7 cruised at 50-55 mph like the RAM did with cruise, I suspect the F-150 too would have achieved around 5 mpg -Gas is cheaper still -Better configurations and axle ratios available -360 degree camera rocks -can b packed with technology 2 its gills -Real world mpg of 2.7 EB stays between 19 for people who tow and 22 for people who tow less, for RAM its 21 for people who tow and 25 for people who tow less, not much appreciable since its 80 HP less and 300 cc less and much more GREEN as well

holybuba A tiny twin turbo engine in a FULL SIZE pickup truck that can handle the stress of a heavy load for long period of time like a V8 while also being efficient is a revelation. Not some high strung turbo 4-cyl, 6-cyl or rotary engine in a 2500lb+ rice burner and that you have to rev the piss out of it to get power. The 2.7 is a working engine, not a race engine. It doesn't require rebuilding every 50000 miles. Also the 2.7 is the smallest engine that has ever been put into a full size pickup. You must be a fart-can rice fan boy with all the flashing lights and gizmos and you favorite movies are fast n furious 1-6 + 7!

In Arizona where summer temps hit 90 degrees and 6% mountain grades the temp gauge on my truck went almost in the red and max speed was 40 mph with a 5400 pound trailer. After owning my eco diesel 3 months I traded it in for a hemi. Wish I would have read more desert testing reviews first😟

Just had an idea... Figure out what average MPH is needed to cross the finish line at the time the EcoDiesel did. Now run the Gauntlet again with the 2.7 EcoBoost and set the cruise on that MPH... I'd love to know what MPG the Ford would get running the same speed as the Fiat. I'm willing to bet it would be nearly identical. Thing is the Ford can go much faster if needed, the Fiat just can't.

Don't these eco diesel have a common problem with the cam gear walking on the end of the camshaft? I remember reading this on forums. From what I remember is dodge press fitted the cam gear on the camshaft and didn't use a bolt or a keyway to keep it in place.

The thing people have to remember is 96% of the time driving to and from work (which most owners use it for) this truck wins in fuel efficiency and diesel resale value retained which helps negate the slightly more high costs of diesel plus the urea cost.

It wasn't running hot in anyway. That is where the gauge is at full therma open. Not struggling, the computer/vehicle is engineered perfectly for 3K rpm to be the Peak on a powerband. Which is great so its not revving its nuts off consuming fuel. A Vehicle/motor powerband is the Peak torque RPM, 2000 for this motor. And the peak HP RPM, 4000. Right in the middle the vehicle will have less then peak HP and less then peak Torque in most cases. This motor is freaking amazing and it actually pulls past 3100 RPM with over 90% of its torque. Nah that dam setup wasnt struggling at all, it was riding in perfection. You want more then that, you go buy a bigger motor/setup. I mean to say spend $15K+ more money and get 3MPG doing same shit.... Ram 1500 Eco diesel is right where it needs to be to dominate the shit!!!! Their 2019 Boost in power BETTTETERERE not come at ANY cost in MPG or Else we dont freaking want it RAM!

I agree. I tow a 7500 lb. 5th wheel trailer. The water temp has gotten up to 244 degrees and the oil temp to 272 on some long steep hills at over 90 degrees outside temp. I told the service people about it, but they didn’t seem too concerned. That is the only concern I’ve had with the eco diesel. Works very well and I have towed my trailer over 20,000 miles.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but the rock guard added to this trailer for the Ecodiesel test was NOT present for the 2.7 Ecoboost test. That rock guard adds quite a bit of drag to the Ecodiesel combo.... Trust me...

No it doesn't. The rock guard actually reduces drag because of its shape compared to the trailer + vehicle. The smoother shape reduces turbulence. If you look at some truck air flow diagrams, you'll see that wind over the pickup would have slammed into the Bronco with incredible turbulence. With the rock guard, the wind is redirected.

I'm sure that the ecoboost 2.7 would have had better than 4.3 mpg if you drove it up at the same speed that the Ram averaged. It may not have achieved the 6.1 mpg but It would have been closer.

It will never come close to the mileage of a diesel simply because diesel fuel has 30% more energy per gallon than gasoline. But it cost so much more I question whether it makes economic sense anymore. Diesel used to cost less than gasoline.

The run up, i was worried this Ecodiesel was going to be like the 6.4 2500. But it stayed above 50 mph and got 6.1 mpg..Wow i like it.It makes me wonder how fast you could go up the IKE manual shifting the truck?

I don't know but I think u only got the mile or 2 better mpg is cause of that new rock guard u put on your trailer. Those this are supposed to be aerodynamic but that thing looks pretty flat to me and that would mean a lot of drag. Bet if you try it again u will see another 2ish mpg better.

Over all I think the diesel is the way to go. Torque and speed dont come in the same truck. No many of us need to go 0-60 in 5 seconds if you purpose of buying the truck was to pull. Who cares how fast it is on the track if you can't pull its own weight.

At the end, did I hear no integrated brake controller? Don't remember hearing about payload on this ecodiesel model as well. If it was an 4x4 model, how does that affect payload and mpg? 2WD is not an option in the North East US and in need of a PU that can tow a decent sized travel trailer and be able to handle the tough winters here in the off season.

Would like to have seen the oil temp readout numbers. Coolant gauge angle did look warm but hard to tell. My 2014 Jeep ecodiesel gets up to 252f oil Temps up hill and then some how cools. I assume a fan is helping. I'm pulling a boat which is about 5000 lbs. Love it and would like to pull a travel trailer close to max 7200lbs tow rating. 107k miles and still going strong.

I would call this truck the best ALL AROUNDER in the half ton serie...There was awarded cowboy for this type of performance and since the touck model is the long horn, it should inherit the title..

I am just now getting into all your truck reviews. Please keep up the good work. Can you please summarize your thoughts between the Ram EcoDiesel and the Nissan Titan XD ?? The Nissan is far more expensive. Our local Nissan dealer wants $ 64,185 for what they consider the fully-loaded package. I am biased towards the Nissan and the Cummins, but it only has a 6 speed transmission and no exhaust brake. It is not fair comparison as the Titan XD is in its own class rating. Right ??

+David Locklear I just picked up my 1500 EcoDiesel about 4 months ago. I cant comment too much on the Titan. But I can say that I have been very happy with the RAM. Good mileage and an amazing ride. Handles some pretty rough trails like a champ.

I wonder what the outcome would be if ran the ike gauntlet like normal, then ran it after resetting ecm. when it is reset the transmission "re-learns your driving style and adjusts accordingly. Would this make a difference on the feel of the drive and keeping speed. Thanks guys for the gauntlet videos, I look forward to them! Jed

Oh sure I love it when my truck has to downshift and turning 3500rpm! with my foot to the floor and wont go past 55 or shift into high gear. Sounds normal . LOL "Its just happy to do its thing"? ROFLMOA Who are these guys?

You didn't mention what size wheels/tires were on installed. A 3.55 Rear axle ratio would give you a higher speed and still have the capability of the weight you noted. The 3.92 axle has well over 9k lb capability, so you really weren't "maxed out" in towing capability. You were probably confused with the 3.55 limitation of 7400 lbs. Many owners are finding the top speed limited with the 3.92 axle, even on flat hwy's. You would have probably had a very different experience with the 3.55 axle.
