For those curious; I own a 2020 Ram Ecodiesel Longhorn. Has the max trailer package w/ 3.55 axle ratio, 4x4 3.0L Turbo diesel. It feels torquey. Those wondering about the fuel mileage, I pull a 5,800 pound camper with this truck (which has 21k miles and is bone stock). Typically I’m able to maintain around 12-13 mpg @ 65mph. Without a trailer, max mpg I’ve seen (driving from Texas to Illinois) was 32 mpg. Of course, going up steep grades and being at altitude will cause more strain and bring down the mpg significantly. I can’t speak for large grades and altitude however, I haven’t traveled any farther west than New Mexico in this truck yet.

So the only real problem in this video I noticed was the towing time which in turn would be the pickup speed. The squat can be fix very easy if your going to be pulling that kind of weight. The 1/2 mpg shouldn't be such a big deal. What should be in the factor is 0-45 mph for pickup speed and 45-0 mph stopping power. On a incline, decline and level ground because everyone wants to know the safety of the towing capabilities. I think the sound test is pretty cool. I also think if it has 4x4 it should have a roll in there somewhere and not for playing in the mud or off roads.

I towed around 7000lbs across the same section of road last year with my 2015 Ecodiesel Ram and let me tell you, towing that heavy with a 1/2 ton is stressful. I had a few time where I was pedal to the floor and barely keeping 35mph on some grades going from grand junction to Denver. With my “setup” it sure was blowing some smoke due to lack of o2. And I did much better fuel economy that than they show here. It’s not a race when you tow heavy.
@kcbyrd_37
@kcbyrd_37 3 жыл бұрын
thats good to know fuel economy can be better. My 09 silverado 2500 with the 6.0 and 6 speed trans stays between 7-8 mpg towing. there are times where i have to tow and it wont go past 4th gear. I keep going back and forth between wanting an EcoDiesel vs a Cummins just cause of the fuel economy. i have a car hauler when loaded weighs around 8000 lbs. Dont want to spend the extra money on a bigger truck when im not constantly towing with it if i dont have to.
@vannfe11
@vannfe11 2 жыл бұрын
@@kcbyrd_37 I have a friend with a '21 2500 Cummins and she she gets 19 mpg. If you tow heavy up grades, ecodiesel is not the way to go. If I had a Cummins, I would never trade it for this. I'm in the market for a new truck now and due to the lack of deals on the 2500's I'm going to have to get a 1500 but it'll be a Hemi. I've been using a 2004 F150 5.4 gas and it's rated for 9000 and has towed my horses across the country just fine several times. So a Hemi will work. I'd like to have the extra cushion of the Cummins, but that's just not in the budget right now since there aren't any financing deals and haven't been since March '21. I only wish the Hemi came in a 3.73 axle instead of 3.92. I think it would be a better happy medium between the 3.21 and 3.92 balancing towing and economy.
@vannfe11
@vannfe11 2 жыл бұрын
What's your axle ratio on your ecodiesel? I've been towing a bp horse trailer with a 5.4 v8 2wd and a 3.73 axle and it handles grades just fine loaded. I'm fixing to get the Hemi 3.92 but I had originally wanted the ecodiesel...until I spoke with diesel mechanics and folks that have towed horses with it and said no.

@@Big.Ron1 I went with the 2500 cummins tradesman about a year ago, it has plenty of amenities for me with it being plain Jane right out of the box. I tow 7-8k with plenty of power to spare on many steep grades. it averages 19 when unhooked, when Im towing its at 14 mpg. Ive done the gasser towing thing, it will get the job done, its great if you have to pee every hour...pee& fill up...rinse and repeat....around 6-7 mpg with the same load ( 2500 GMC 6.0) Gas eventually ate a deeper hole in my wallet than diesel did over mixed highway driving. However, Im not sure I would use the cummins as a daily driver, however a lot of people do....your mileage may drop if it has to go through more regens and the EGR may eventually act up forcing you to consider " How in the world did those parts fall off ?". I can honestly say I have never noticed my truck going through a regen, but I do tow at least 50% of the time...probably keeps the soot burned off. Diesel only works for me because I use a beater of a 2002 corolla for daily driving. Def Fluid is a minimal expense, I use about 5 gallons every 10K. If I could find myself a Gasser that gave me 14 mpg at towing 7-8k and 500-600 Ftlbs of torque I would not have bothered with a diesel, but those numbers in a gasser are as elusive as big foot riding a unicorn.

To have a completely valid comparison, both truck should be exactly alike in models chosen right down to the differential gears! But I will watch the video anyway to see the outcome! I'm sure the diesel is going to get better mileage, but the Hemi a better time a dynamic performance. One more thing Andre’ that 52 p.s.i. is the OIL pressure! Not the fuel pressure!

Can not beat MPG and fuel cost of a diesel... On a 30 gallon tank a diesel getting 33 MPG will take you 990 miles @ $2.95 gal = $88.50 and to get the same distance on a gas engine getting 20 MPG and @ $2.55 gal = $126.22 with a refuel stop to get the same 990 miles... Oh you say but the DEF fluid... its a 10 gal tank filled about every 3000 miles at $2.55 gal at truck stops so you can add $25.50/3k miles ~ $8.50 to the diesel tank fuel cost so still $97.00 / $126.22 still great savings of $29.22 every tank fill based on these days fuel prices.

On a 1500 series, with a couple people in the truck and a tank of gas you will very likely exceed your payload before ever reaching the tow rating of the truck if you use a 10% to 15% tongue weight target. The $5,000 option is the cost over the base V6 Pentastar engine, the Hemi V8 non etorque is $1500 option or Hemi V8 with etorque is a $1700 option so the EcoDiesel is technically a $3500/$3300 option cost over the V8 Hemi. and .7mpg better efficiency is 275 gallons less fuel used per 10,000 miles driven so 275 gallons x $3 a gallon = $825, or at $4 a gallon = $1100 and again that's only per 10,000 miles driven.

It’s really hard to beat a HEMI they are great motors. And the 8 speed is matched perfectly to it. When you are bored some time look up the cost to repair a HEMI vs and eco boost or diesel and you’ll be even more happy. Head gasket for example is 2x more to repair on anything boosted because of all the extra labor. People don’t realize anything with a turbo is 2x more labor to work on and a simple V8 has a lot of great reasons to purchase.

Here we obviously have road testers who have no idea how a diesel engine works! A Diesel is designed to run at a constant low rpm, not have its neck rung like a nominally aspirated petrol engine. Why are large ships, trains and HGVs all diesel and sports vehicles all petrol engines?? To compare a diesel engine half the size of a petrol engine is just as pointless. I seriously think you guys should take lessons on efficient driving. Think about it . . .

Depends on thebsetup you get but the 5.7 can definitely out do the ecodiesel. I believe the highest tow rating with the 5.7 is about 11,000lbs when properly configured. I had a 14 regular cab shortbed 5.7 with the 6spd auto and pulled a 6000lb trailer from CO to PA with no issues. Was even going about 75-80 for most of it and still got 14mpgs. I leveled it, and put 35X12.50-18 Nitto tires and Method aluminum rims. Instantly dropped 2 MPG, and it feels like a little loss of acceleration and towing power. How about a test comparing stock truck to after lift/level and larger tires; no other modifications like a tuner, etc. Nice video. Love your work.

The results don't surprise me, I have a 6.4L 3500 dually Hemi hauling a truck camper. I bought the gas truck because I save on weight and cost. I would need to drive a lot to make the diesel worth it. Also, I am usually at low altitudes. I find the tow-haul mode to be almost useless on a gas engine. Also gas engines literally "suck" air that is at higher attitudes. Diesels rule at higher altitudes because of the turbo charger. I like the 8 speed ZF transmission.
