2015 Silverado with headers hard take off muffler comparison

This is a compilation of all the hard take off videos that I have recorded of the various different mufflers I have tested on my 2015 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3L Ecotec3 engine.
The truck is equipped with Kooks 1-3/4" long tube headers with catted "Green cats" y-pipe into a single 3" pipe out the stock location with a 3.5" slant cut tip. Each muffler was simply clamped in place, run for a week or so then switched out after the videos were shot. No other modifications to the exhaust were done in order to keep consistency in highlighting the sound differences between just the mufflers themselves.

They all sound awesome , but the ATAK and Black Window are unreal - wish we had a chance to hear before headers. Any thoughts on new 2019’s. for a set up - or muffler swap ?

They both do sound great. I haven't looked at the 2019 trucks at all but I can't see them being much different than the previous models in terms of sound or even exhaust routing besides the dual rear exit.

GM locked the PCM's and they cant be tuned. EFI Live and HP tuners confirmed. HP Tuners doesn't know if they will be able to crack this generation or not.

I realize this is a year ago, but hoping you still check your comments now and then. I'm somewhat stuck between the Borla 40085 or 40943, and the Magnaflow 14419. Looking for minimal drone, but like the loudness. I have a 2004 Denali 6.0L, planning on long tube headers, true dual exhaust. Recommendations?

ATAK for all around mean and aggressive. Corsa for mean when you want it to be.

My 6.2 has longtube headers, catless y pipe and a single carven r series muffler. I love the sound at idle but I'm OVER the drone at highway speeds. Can I add a resonator after muffler to kill the drone?

Yes. A resonator will help reduce drone but will make it quieter overall. Corsa or adding a J-pipe/ helmholtz resonator will be your best bet but Corsa is a new cat- back unless you find someone selling a used muffler and the J-pipe/helmholtz resonator is usually custom built per application.

Did any of them give you noticeably more power I noticed some of them you spun the tires and others you didn't

Troy Bice I don't feel any single muffler gave me more power. The headers and tune definitely did. The tires wore quickly so less tread the further along these videos went plus some were fall and cold while others were in summer heat. The Borla ATAK had new aggressive tread in that video and they aren't the greatest dry pavement traction tire.

Used the ATAK and BBE the longest then sold the truck and all the mufflers. I think I still have the Super 10 and Solo left only.

Hard to tell from videos.. how’d you like the venom 250 in comparison to the rest? I’m on the fence about doing the race venom or venom 250!

Venom 250 was my least favorite of them all. Didn't like the sound of tone. Really airy flutter with drone/ resonance I didn't like.

Between the widowmaker, race venom and borla atak crate mufflers what would you recommend for cat back duals (stock manfolds, all 3 cats) I want it loud but with the least amount of drone between the three.

Probably the Widowmaker. I would seriously try just removing the flapper, muffler and resonator and see how you like a straight pipe and add a muffler after if you don't like it.

@@mattofearle my sierra is a 2011 so no flapper. You think the widow maker will drone less then the race venom?

@@codyodanski3854 it may or may not with stock manifolds I doubt you will hear much drone with either. I had more drone with the pro venom than the Widowmaker with headers. It all depends on your definition of drone. Drone to me is that constant odd frequency that pulsates in the cab at certain RPMs. I like to hear the exhaust in the cab but that is just volume or good resonance to me.

Curious if you still check comments here.. how did you like the widow maker in comparison to the rest? I saw your review of the venom 250 and decided to return it and buy the race venom (in between the venom 250 and widowmaker). I think I’m going to go with the same header set up as you have here so really looking forward to your review of the widowmaker !

Widowmaker is deep and loud. Much better than the venom 250 if you're looking for loud. The venom was just too "airy" / hollow sounding for me and disliked the interior resonance in the highway.

The Borla 40085 was one of the deeper mufflers at idle in my opinion.

Black widow is deep and has no drone best I used so far and wont get another muffler only black widow

I have a corsa touring with the dual single side exit on my 18 denali 5.3. I have been thinking about going with a set of catless long tubes. I going to assume that the corsa db is similar (in not as loud as the sport). What is your opinion on that setup? Being that this is my daily, I don't want it to be crazy loud. I love the corsa touring stock but wouldn't mind if the truck was a little louder with the headers. I just wanna keep it family approved. lol

I have personally seen both the dB and Sport and even opened them up. They are identical in every way. The touring should be more tame or quieter than both of those.

Same pipe each time. Just clamped a different muffler in. Sometimes I had to change the pipe between the muffler and tailpipe for shorter mufflers but overall the same.

Can you give me some more details on the Carven tr, Borla xr1 round and the Billy Boat? Loudness drone etc.

Grant Berman Carven TR has good tone, decently loud and aggressive WOT. Borla XR1 good sound with moderate aggressive mid to decent aggressive WOT. Both drone slightly with Carven the less of the two. BBE has aggressive and crisp sound with least amount of drone. Probably loudest of the three with a lot less drone.

I'm going headers catless true dual x pipe but I feel like I'm gonna need a muffler but want just one dual in dual out. Should I do race venom or what would you get

I'm not a fan of the venom series but the round ones sound mean. It all depends on what sound you are looking for and how loud.

@@mattofearle yeah I have x pipe true duals rn but I'm saying I'm putting headers on and going catless and might need a muffler. And I only wanna run one muffler that's dual in and out. And that's why I said race venom because I don't want a junk muffler and the best mufflers usually don't come in dual in/out Magnaflow makes one but idk if I wanna run that. That's why I'm asking what kind is good

@Hunter Kembel I misread your first sentence and edited my response. Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Thrush, Jegs Gibson MWA and Dynomax all have dual iin and out with Dynomax having a built in x-pipe inside the muffler. I don't like the airy, fluttery sound of the larger chambered black widows personally but many love them and they have their place on certain vehicles. They arent junk but a little pricey for what you get compared to others. I like them on older cammed muscle cars specifically. I didn't like the resonance inside the cab either. What type of sound are you looking for? Loud and crisp, deep and forceful or mellow and stock like at idle?

I have some videos on my page of what it sounds like idle startup and wide open throttle I just want it to have that real loud sound but don't want it to clap or sound like a glass pack if you get my drift. I know going catless will Definitely contribute to changing the sound but I feel like the headers will clean that up. I'm keeping my exhaust setup just might need to add a muffler if it sounds too much like a straight pipe with headers. I have the x pipe but don't know if it will be enough once headers go on.

@@mattofearle would you rather go with the magnaflow 2.5 dual in dual out straight through muffler. Or the dynomax. Something that's not very big but dosent drone as much as a super 10. I've had that muffler before single in dual out
