Funny how some are comparing the i8 to the Tesla Model S, because they don't even belong in the same class. The Model S couldn't even finish a lap in Laguna Seca (and another around Nurburgring) without going to Safe Mode. Don't get me wrong, the Model S is one awesome sporty every-day road going car and it's pretty much one of a kind. I'd love one myself having driven it twice. Now the i8 is an exercise bringing sport into the hybrid. Its performance is comparable to a 911, R8, etc., including the price. Did it surpass them? Some said not quite yet, but in some ways the i8 has opened new possibilities, ie. hybrid in a sportscar. Having always been about a sportscar that can be driven every day, this is a logical step for BMW. Also worth considering that behind the i8 (and the i3), BMW developed a new way to manufacture these cars, mainly mass-manufacturing the carbon-fiber components. Imagine if the starting point is this close, what would the 2nd gen be?

With a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, it may not be the fastest, but boy is it beautiful. It's not a GTR setting records, but a sign that efficient cars CAN be undeniably sporty.

I think the difference between this and a R8 for example is how people will see you. The R8 has been out for a while now and while it does look really cool and people do love them this looks like a whole new generation of car, and that because it is. These new hybrid/electric cars are the future its hard to say that this is only a fad. The i8 will get a ton more looks on the street because its a more fascinating car to look at. The R8 is faster, a better sports car and to some the better car, but you can't hate on the people that would pick the i8. I would take the i8 just because of how new/special it is.

When and if gas runs out ; you can still drive i8 on pure electric . They should make engine that runs on both gasolene and ethanol , like Koenigsegg did . Even so , factory LPG version would be great . The only problem i8 has is that it is BMW - because drivers like any other's BMW drivers would drive it like douchebags .

The idea behind the i8 is cool, but BMW is playing with fire with this car more than the i3. I see the strategy/objective of the i8, but unfortunately the market for a fuel efficient sports car in the ~$125,000 price range is...well, when was the last time you met a 911 or SL63 AMG owner who complained about fuel economy? At this price, saving fuel isn't a priority especially when driving a 2dr sports coupe. It would have been more beneficial to have made the i8 something like a Panamera hybrid or Tesla Model S competitor with 4doors. There's a reason why Porsche hasn't shoved a electric motor inside a 911 as of now; there is barely a market for this sort of thing, and even smaller when you're pricing is north of $100k.

People with money don't need a car like this to spend less on fuel but to make a statement about caring for the planet and being in tune with the tech and trends. I for one am sure many Porsche 911 prospecting buyers will consider i8 as a more interesting alternative. I would too if I'd be in a market for a 125k car.

udlock9 I disagree with that idea entirely; saving the environment should not just be a luxury, but something everyone should do. Now before you slam the idea in my face that I'm implying everyone to drive Priuses (I'd suicide first if that ever happened), I do admit the newest technologies are initially expensive, but hear my argument first. As a near $110k proposition, wouldn't a Tesla be a better answer if saving the world was your "garden of Eden"? If you want a 2dr sporty coupe in the ~$100k range, you'd have plenty of options, and last check a 911 Carrera can easily get within ~2mpg average of a V6 Camry.

As far as the steering, I'm sure it has more to do with the light weight of the car then the steer by wire set up. I won't believe that simulated road feed back is better than real feedback ie hydraulic. As much as I like the styling: design layering not unlike the mclaren P1. I don't think that this will sell well. I mean I would never buy this car. I don't have the means to anyway; they should have just gone all electric if the car that has no amenities no storage, can only sit two people realistically. Thus making long trips annoying if not them impossible altogether. Anyway it's a beautiful car but I just don't see the point beyond a technical exercise.

This "review" is terrible! The journalist couldn't be less enthusiastic or engaging, as usual for him. The correlation to Countach doors missed the mark (i8 are a-pillar gullwing, not scissor). Gave up at 2:44 since this lacked objectivity, information and a pulse.

Tesla is obviously a lot more practical vehicle in terms of space. However, in terms of range it isn't. Any long road trips where you have ancillaries (e.g. AC, charging the phone,...) running will cut into electric range and you may have charging and range issues in colder climates. Also once you run out of electricity you can't simply stop and fill up your tank; for example, it is understanding even the 'long range' top of the line P85 can take 1.5 nights of sleep to charge (or more depending on charging method). Hence, hybrids are a lot more practical to use as you can always fill up the petrol tank as back up. As the guy stated in this vid if you can afford a car like this you have more then 1 vehicle; you can have the i8 as your toy and a family vehicle. The Tesla wouldn't be the best choice for the later role if you do the occasional long family road trip.
