Two years ago (2018) I was in the market for a real performance car built in the USA. I'd been driving another brand since 2013 which had turned out to be a car worthy of many upgrades to get it right. In fact, that make and model alone supports many busy aftermarket parts suppliers who have gotten rich because owners like me want the handling and performance we thought we'd brought home from the dealer. Now, at that moment I had never considered the Charger, not once, until my wife and I inadvertently rented a 5.7L R/T at the airport during a trip to visit family. What a surprise. After about ten miles my wife looks over and says, "you ought'a get one of these." We had that car for ten days, put a bunch of back road and highway miles on it and loved every minute. Thus began my search. This road test above was one of the better tests that, in part, confirmed my decision to buy. I got an IndiGo Blue 2018 R/T Scat Pack with the 6.4L 485 bhp Hemi, plus the Dynamics Package that includes 20" x 9.5" forged aluminum wheels and the six piston Brembo front brakes with lovely two-piece front rotors (4 piston Brembos were standard in the rear). So, this Charger is simply an unbelievable car. Coming on now to two years the car has been flawless. Not one warranty trip to the dealer. My prior vehicle knew that route by heart. We've taken some long road trips and it is sooo quiet and comfortable for those plus it offers great highway mileage via the seamless drop-into-4-cyl-mode when cruising. On the highway, the exhaust note is in stealth mode and you zip along in amazing quiet inside the cabin. Zero window and door wind noise as well. Zero. In the mountains with that power, one never struggles on the up hills and the cornering is quick and rock solid with amazing turn in response in spite of the weight. This car in hand feels like a sportscar weighing 1000 lbs. less. Minimal body roll in corners and very little nose dive under hard braking. Suspension is well-damped (Dodge was brilliant in fitting Bilsteins on this rig), flawless regardless of road surface and totally silent doing its work. And the aluminum hood up front and battery in back both help weight distribution toward the rear. Brakes: the Brembo setup pulls this rig to zero from freeway speeds with no muss or fuss, extremely confidence inspiring, brakes like these. All the controls are perfectly placed for me, a six footer. But the seats slide back far enough to enable an NBA All Star to fit in comfortably. Driver and copilot seats are both power-operated, and each has a power and position adjustable lumbar support. The cloth is high grade and, as the tester tells us above, these seats hold you in place while giving away nothing in the comfort department. My wife loves to drive it, in part, because with a gentle right foot it is like a large pussycat, but the lion lurks there and will slam you into the seat with just a bit more aggressive pedal press. The trunk is huge for all your travel luggage, and the rear seat allows double dating, not possible in my last car. The rears also fold down to expand luggage capacity if needed. This feature is not available in Brand X. Plus I got the moonroof, which I love; this not available in Brand Y. Last, I have not had to go to a single one of those aftermarket guys for suspension and shifter parts to fix what the engineers should have fixed in my last car. This is a great choice if you have a family but still want a well-handling high-powered sports car to enjoy every morning on the way to work. Find a good dealer and check it out. You will not be disappointed.

I just got a 2017 white scatpack with 19,000 miles. Incredible car. the acceleration is violent was not expecting the power to hit so hard. yet just like you said it's fairly tame in default with under quarter throttle. My wife ok'd the purchase because i had a fiesta st and car seats and space was starting to be an issue. shes only freaking out about winter. up here in CT it gets pretty bad and i fell in love already and dont want this beast to see the chemicals on the winter roads. So shes not very thrilled we got a 40k dollar seasonal car

There is a downside though. The tires that come on them are not so great.. Theyre not wide enough or sticky enough for a car with this much power, and you'll find yourself spinning the tires quite often. That is really my only problem.

@TestDrivenTV
@TestDrivenTV 8 жыл бұрын
+xTouragx Thank you. The SS, we have not tested. It is a much smaller car, not really a full-size such as the Charger. It may well be good in a comparison, but not really apples to apples.
@cdkx655
@cdkx655 8 жыл бұрын
+TestDrivenTV The SS starts heavier, has more passenger volume, more front headroom/legroom/hiproom, more back headroom/shoulder-room/hip room, and a bigger trunk. Charger's wheelbase is definitely longer, but total length is pretty close. Overall, I think the sizes might be more comparable than you're thinking. Worth a review... if you can find one.

8 speed doesn't get it that high. I have a V6 that I drive civilly and it gets that combined in a week... 21-23 mpg. Every other review I've seen has it at 15 mpg combined mainly because of when street mpg is combined. The car eats gas when idle and when street driving. So how did he manage to get v6 MPG out of this. I don't think its combined driving.
@daison96
@daison96 8 жыл бұрын
+Ibn Mamoo I have the SRT model and it averages about 20 mpg easily. On the freeway, once a consistent speed is established, it turns off four cylinders, and has an eco mode. The car gets good mpg for a V8.... If you're really having fun in it though, not so much.

Ok great attractive car and packages, but what about reliability, dodge engineering is not the greatest in the long run. Will have electronic issues after 5 years. Will the engine needs lot of work after 120k miles will the paint look like crap after 5 years. Will it be good car after owning it 10 years? I really want one, but I think about long run!
@Bizzair1990
@Bizzair1990 7 жыл бұрын
Dont even know what youre talking about. Dodge engineering is probably the best in the world. The 392 power curve to the 8 speed is some of the best engineering. The issue with dodge has always been dealer and quality control. There paint booth is out dated, and it doesnt effect the quality of the paint, actually the paint is very good quality - its the application and quality. I have a few flecks and dimples on my car. Thats the only thing Dodge needs to improve upon is there assurance of quality upon purchase.

+407ForRent Depends man. I am a camaro guy and was at the dealership ready to fulfill my dreams of buying a brand new camaro, but once I hopped on a test drive I was immediately disappointed. The new Camaro has fantastic power, but as an every day driver (as painful as it is to admit) it is impractical. The visibility issues, the trunk, the back seats and you cant take passengers, it's a nice car to have in the garage to take out on a nice after noon or when you need to get your mind off things, but when you're leaving at 5am and can't fit your tool bag in the trunk, and you can't see SHIT from your blind spots trust me it will make you look at Mopar real quick lol. Again, I will always love Camaro, but as an every day driver, it's just not realistic man.
@canto_v12
@canto_v12 8 жыл бұрын
To be honest, the new muscle cars all have bad visibility. The Camaro takes the cake, but the Challenger is not far behind and the Mustang not far behind that. A mid-engine Ferrari has better visibility than these things. It's unfortunate, but if you're willing to put up with it, they are a fantastic performance value.

How so? The Charger gets more horsepower and torque, bigger brakes, and better mpg. The SS handles better with its magnetic suspension, but honestly who is going to take either to the track? Looks is purely subjective. The Charger offers more towards the muscle car consumer.
