Now that is some serious, "goodwill." And, losing 5 hours paid with short block, file under, no good deed goes unpunished. To what do you attribute the worn bearings and crusty stuck rings? Oil change intervals too long? Cheap oil? I have the same engine on my 15 Accord, ~43k miles. Only seen M1 0w20 synthetic, currently EP version with yearly oil changes. I think 40% on OLM as low as it's gotten. As it's a DI engine, would have been curious to see the intake valve heads/tops. Nice work and explanation. Thanks. 👍

It came in with only a quart of oil basically when it was making noise. Around 8-10k kms intervals but it had pretty low kms. Our 17 accord gets a drain and fill when the oil life reaches 60% and an oil and filter change when it gets to 15%

@@theoffroadingmechanic Interesting that you basically follow Honda's recommendation for filter change every other oci. I don't think many owners are even aware of it, even though it's what A,B represents on MM. Since I'm under the car anyway, I change the filter too. CRV coming in with only qt of oil would explain a lot. Curios, ever had or seen any issues with gunked up valves because of DI?

Teach the customer to ignore the oil change percent indicator probably why they needed new parts and engine because they take it to 15%
@theoffroadingmechanic
@theoffroadingmechanic 10 ай бұрын
The oil life percent changes depending on how you drive. Had a customer that drives all highway and comes in for his oil change when it reached 5% and that is when he would change his oil on history that is about almost 14k kms between oil changes. Recently the past year and a half on his oil changes was noted that a quart of oil low then 2 quarts and then customer came in with a noise. And we told him your doing 14k km between oil changes and he says that he just changes it when his car tells him to. We put oil change sticker for 8k kms everytime he came in for an oil change.

I had 2013 accord with the Earth dreams engine. I changed my oil at the 15% mark and I drove that car 213 thousand miles. Other than routine maintenance I changed the starter. The CVT even held up fine. It was a solid car. I only traded it in because I was ready for something different.

My Hondas go 8k to 10k km based on the maintenance minder. Shorter in winter, and shorter for city driving. Honda consider 1 liter of oil consumption per 1500 km to be acceptable, so it has to be checked and topped up regardless of the maintenance minder. I check and top up every 20% ish on the oil life indicator. One of my cars is an old high mileage Civic. It will consume about 2 liters of oil between oil changes. That would drop well below the dip stick if it wasn't topped up, yet is well within Honda's 1 liter per 1500 km oil consumption limit.

@@theoffroadingmechanic Thanks. I'm always curious about when professionals replace bolts (and nuts) because the Honda service manuals specify replacing fasteners all over the place, but when I watch videos I find it hit and miss whether people follow those recommendation. Head bolts being a special case where the manual specifies a criteria for replacement.

Basically just do OIC regularly or earlier around 5k kms or equivalent miles and do the regular maintenance required ex. Change pump, belt, fluids, plugs, etc. at certain kms/miles?
@theoffroadingmechanic
@theoffroadingmechanic 10 ай бұрын
I do mine every 5k kms but that is just me on my own vehicles. Other things I do is inspection to know how everything is wearing or if there is something that needs attention or it can wait. In the manual there will be intervals for certain things.

Not 💯 sure but just seeing the common occurrences oil control rings are stuck and all carboned up. The 15-17 accords do the same thing. My dad has a 17 accord and he's been changing the oil every 5k kms and has more kms than this CRV and doesn't burn any oil. But has the typical VTC rattle on start up. So I think it's just the longer oil change intervals and the design of the piston with the oil control ring and drain holes.
@McDzy
@McDzy 10 ай бұрын
@@theoffroadingmechanic just fixed the rattle on my 15 crv, its actually not the vtc actuator, but the timing chain tensioner.. cheap easy fix.. if you can do all of this, i bet the timing chain tensioner one is a breeze for you lol... i only asked because my crv is getting up there in miles and plan on keeping it as long as i can haha
@theoffroadingmechanic

Yea it's pretty easy to pop the timing cover off on that year CRV has more space. Ill probably at one point when it gets worse replace the actuators and timing components.

I nervously watch as a 2016 CR-V owner (168,000 km). How bad was the oil consumption for the car to be brought in? I read in the comments below that 1 liter per 1500 km is the norm. I am noticing the dipstick around a quarter down the top mark of the dip stick which people have told me is about a quarter quart. This being around 3000 km. (I check the oil level every fill up). I did notice some residue on the dipstick which I also had when I went over an OCI long ago. Lastly are you in Canada btw?
@jrichardson-m9m
@jrichardson-m9m 10 ай бұрын
They are usually brought in for rattles from the timing set on the 4cyl engines and they are found to be very low on oil. Then more digging is done and oil burning is found. They can also misfire from spark plug fouling. That's fine. 1qt per 1000 miles is the spec(so 1L per 1500km). All engines burn oil and these newer Hondas burn a bit more than they used to due to thin oil(0w-20) and low tension piston rings. Especially at 104k miles(168k km). As for residue on the dipsticks. I have noticed these earthdreams engines do like to leave residue on the dipsticks, not sure why but I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Overall as long as you are doing your oil changes every 5k miles(8k km) or sooner if you do a lot of short drives or stop and go then you should be good. People just really like to stretch their oil changes despite our begging to get them done sooner. I am a 10yr Honda master tech down in the states btw.

I really appreciate the time in your response. It’s a gem of an engine all considered and ever since I had to address the cold start rattle, I have taken a huge interest in prolonging the life of the car (Cold start rattle and timing chain components replaced at 140,000 kms). This year I started to do fluid changes myself to good effect. I’m about to do one a bit early at 5,000 km to cover it during the cold Canadian winter. 😬
@jrichardson-m9m
@jrichardson-m9m 10 ай бұрын
@k24wkevin that mileage is very consistent of when we see timing component failure for the rattle. Honestly doing oil changes a little early can't hurt but we really don't usually see any issues beyond timing set typically. I suspect the engine he is working on was heavily abused and ran very low on oil often.

@@jrichardson-m9mGood to know. It does take a lot of neglect to really doom one of these engines. As for mine, I am thinking of bringing it in for a valve adjustment in the new year, otherwise it’s smooth sailing hopefully. A friend of mine has a 2015 at 380,000 kms (223,000 miles)!

I don't have a definite answer for you. But I see it on the early earth dream k motors and the previous k motor somewhere around 2011 maybe it's the thinner oil and longer oil change intervals.

I have seen pictures of various engines being torn down. It seems the 2mm oil ring and the oil return holes are absolutely unforgiving. It takes very little sludge to make them useless. In addition, many manufacturers overestimated how far a car can go between oil changes.
