It says a lot about Hondas Engineering. It's amazing that anything survived. People, oil can't go 100k. Respect to you, the dealer, and Honda for replacing the chain and the phasers. Yes, they were needed, but you could say they were serviceable. That poor car will die with the oil and filter you just put in it

Years ago I got a free "good will" transmission for a nine year old 2001 Odyssey with 130k km. I paid $1500 for the install, Honda corporate provided the transmission for no charge. Honda work to cultivate customer loyalty and protect their reputation. The van also had a perfect maintenance history, which helped.

remember, Honda wants no bad PR. seen goodwill on stuff just like you're doing , but the goodwill may have been down to 10% warranty, this is the upsetting part because you go from retail to warranty and the customer could have paid less at a good non dealer shop for same repairs.

I took care of mine and the head gasket failed at 137K. The first sign you have a problem your oil pressure sensor and actuator will fail and the vtc spool valve will get sludgy even with proper oil changes and I change mine at 30% or 3500 miles; the second issue will happen not so far long and that’s the cylinder misfire, luckily enough for mine I was losing coolant through the exhaust/combustion chamber. If you own a Honda accord 1.5 or 2.0 you need to use high octane fuel 93 due it being a turbo car. This person here should not own a car and they drove their right into the ground and I wouldn’t even touch it because clearly they don’t care.

How this is covered under warranty a real puzzler for me. Perhaps because owner paid for extended warranty. I own and have owned a fair number of Hondas, can't imagine any of them in this condition. Excellent tear down rebuild video, well worth the watch. 👍As regards maintenance going forward, I don't believe the owner will change a thing. SMH!

Great job! Nice video with clear video shots that get down to a real overhaul. I have two Hondas with those 1.5T engines and I never let the oil run more than 5k miles. Most of the time, I change the oil before 5k. One is a 62k and the other is at 38k. Both run great. I do notice that the oil gets dirty prematurely and that's why I keep on top of that.

Why are you worried about whether it’s covered or not? Just do your job and fix it. These head gaskets are a common issue on this engine, whether you change the oil or not. That’s like saying they didn’t change the oil so their wheel bearing won’t be covered. Unrelated. I’ve seen these head gaskets fail at 30k with regular oil changes. Makes no difference.

Honda and Acura have always been good to us for covering warranty work in warranty periods, but also for goodwill for known issues. For example, replacing the transmission on our 06 TL 100km after Acura Plus extended warranty expired (yes about 100 kilometers). We had it serviced regularly though at the dealer. Later we bought a new TLX As for the Accord owner, they need to be educated on maintenance. Otherwise they’ll find out the hard way

I got the same car, I’m extremely picky with my oil Changes, always on time, and when I opened the engine to replace the head gasket, the oil looks just like the video, It is the head gasket, not the oil changes. How to avoid this problem? Use 93 gas or buy a 2006 Camry. This Engine use a turbo and the turbo needs better quality gas, the presion in the engine is to much for the Crapy design on the head gasket and thats gas under pressure mix with oil and make the sludge, you can also use the sea foam engine treatment and run the car 200 miles and then oil changes at least twice a year

Awesome content! It’s sad to see cars neglected like this! I own a 2013 RDX almost 90K miles and getting ready for spark plugs soon. Question, do the new plugs require adding anti seize to the threads, also what is the proper gap setting ? Also what is the torque foot lbs torque spec for new spark plug install? I definitely plan on going OEM for the plugs. Thank you!
@theoffroadingmechanic
@theoffroadingmechanic 11 ай бұрын
No the spark plugs already come with a special coating and do not need anti seize. That was for back in the day when they made cylinder heads out of cast iron and would rust and cause those plugs to seize or snap when trying to remove them.if you get OEM Honda/Acura spark plugs they come pre gap they usually have something wrapped around the electrode to protect it from damaging the tip. Is your rdx a V6? You might want to check after 60k miles we do it at 80k kms usually they loosen up and blow spark plugs. Just recheck that they haven't backed off from vibrations. For some reason the V6 does that. And on the fits. If your changing them for the first time you might notice some are kinda loose.

My suggestion is keep an eye on your temperature and be pro active and not let it overheat or if you start noticing the temps start creeping up. Check the fluids when it's cold if you notice any drop in level. We get a lot of the older hondas where the radiator fan just stops working due to age. But in my opinion nothing will last forever and anything can be fixed so don't feel bad if it does happen. Those D series, B series motor are pretty easy to do the head gasket on.

Who at Honda did the owner have to blow to get that repaired under warranty? I bought a used Cadillac years ago that was throwing cam codes and needed new chains. Initially the dealer said it was covered under warranty. The next day I get a call that they took a valve cover off and saw what you saw, and warranty is denied. Pay $2500 if you want it fixed or $500 for the tear down so far. After some back and forth with the service manager we agreed on one hour labor and I would tow it out of there the way it is. I took it home and fixed it myself.

First gen if you have a good one well maintained is the one to get. It’s disgusting. I am not just shocked but also surprised with the situation. I have personally had really bad experiences recently with a Honda dealer and I have decided to avoid them as the plague. Regarding the car blowing up head gasket it wasn’t not related with the oil condition but with poorly designed engine. The customer also was not really change the oil much but let’s not Forget that this oil condition is also triggered by constant fuel mixing with the oil and most likely some engine blow by due to the turbo running 20 psi boost . It is possible that the customer has done all the oil changes based on Honda smart schedule so I don’t know what it is the actual situation maybe he has extended warranty. When it comes to working for a dealer or not this is something that can be really tricky. Try running your own garage and then you will discover how hard or how Is it easy to survive and make Money. Most of the new engines are hard to service and this is not Customer fault but manufacturer try to make them so hard to repair so it pushes the customer to buy a new car . This destroys the relationship with the mechanic because he need to charge enormous amount of money for a relatively simple job because the engine is build in a way that is simply extremely hard to do anything. On the end the customer and the mechanic loose while the manufacturer ends up Selling a new car and win the most .

@@theoffroadingmechanic Yeah that I was thinking. check the oil color after 100-200-500km, check how the gunk looks on some parts (visible from outside) and see if that cleaning happens faster with clean oil or equally and if the gunk even goes away. That would be interesting video. Anyway, keep up the content. we all like it :)

There's no recall but we have done quite a few CRV, accords, even civic SI that have been out of warranty. Our warranty just have to submit for approval and we haven't had any declined. Geez my 260k jeep which is notorious for timing chain and lifter failure has only minor varnish and no problems compared to this engine, crazy how people will invest 20k+ in to a vehicle and not do the $70 oil changes every so often.

The problem with your shop taking a job like this is you're screwed no matter what. That engine is dying. It's never going to survive any reasonable service life. If it makes it to the end of the extended warranty, that's the best you can hope for. But when it implodes yet again, which it will for the same reason it came in first, the customer will be back at the shop claiming your repair was faulty. Your dealership will be taking this turd in on a trade for a newer Accord, then this will go off to be parted out at auction. The moral hazard of this boggles the mind. I'm all for manufacturers taking ownership when they make crap parts, but this was 100% customer fault and repairing this car under warranty rewards this awful behavior.

OMG I have been skipping through the video and watching parts. It must be a real kick in the pants when they warranty a ton of work that is all due to the customer’s negligence, and then you have to sit around unpaid. Independent shops with a good business model can’t afford to fix things for free and the good ones are busy as can be and keep their techs happy. Dump this place. The customer should have at least paid for the timing set, cam Phasors, machine shop work, time to do all that. The thing is the bottom end will be full of sludge too.

hi, just subscribed .. not sure how i missed your channel . does honda VVTI gear works like toyota meaning controlled by oil control solenoid that advance or retard .?. i assumee no because you have VTEC , so wondering what VVTI does in honda if we have VTEC. toyota also have lock and unlock on VVTI gear does honda have something similar.
@theoffroadingmechanic
@theoffroadingmechanic 5 ай бұрын
Yea vvti gears are just to advance or restart cam timing like any manufacturers some do it differently like Mazda skyactive engine actually is a high compression engine but overlaps the valves to allow the exhaust to allow literally fire into the cat to heat it up quicker which is what you hear on the Mazda when you first start them up is a loud idle. Or they use variable valve timing to lower compression ratio. Older Honda engine only had vvti gear on the intake but newer model Honda switch to dual vvti so both intake and exhaust. But not all 1.5T are the same. The accord has VTEC on the exhaust side to help spool up the turbo which uses oil pressure to engage a rocker arm for a higher and longer duration profile lobe on The cam shaft. But not all 1.5t are the same such as the CRV doesn't have VTEC at all. So there are variations of VTEC.

Start giving advise to your viewers common problems on those engines, frequent or repeted obd2 probelems, attarct more viewers by doing leve 1/2 hobs like brake, rotor, alternator, starter, etc. then control arm, axle, bearing, just my few thoughts.
