The way to avoid oil hitting your hand is to spin the bolt very quickly with your index finger. It will shoot into the oil pan and spin to the edge as the oil streams out missing the bolt that is spun out of the way. No oil hits your hands.

Just changed the oil on my 2016 Pilot. I put a 1 quart ziplock bag over the old oil filter before I unscrewed it - zero oil spilled! I will do this with each future oil change! I reset the B1 maintenance using the “Reset” button on the steering wheel - had to hold it for a while - guessing at least 15 seconds - did not have to go into the infotainment center. Great video - thank you!

Ted Baxter I’ll have to try that steering wheel button reset next time, thanks. The ziplock bag tip has been working out great

Some tips to be less messy, use aluminum foil to wrap it around the frame/cross member. Use a quart size zip lock bag and cover the old oil filter as you unscrew it, all the old oils will go into the ziplock bag.

thanks. i've done a couple more oil changes since this video, and kind of figure new ways along the way and wrapping the oil filter with a plastic bag helps.

If you do an oil change with the engine warm or hot the oil will release in that speed, but if you do an oil change with the engine cold it would solve your problem.

Advice from someone with a '17 Ridgeline...Once you start to loosen up the oil filter a bit, put a gallon ziplock around it and take it off. Put a rag or make an aluminum foil chute to the pan underneath to catch any residual. I do the turn the tire to the right and access the filter through the wheel well method to change the filter.

Great video! Any issues with VCM and oil consumption? Thanks!
@ReneLopez-qc2vx2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Im currently 140k miles in, and haven't seen issues with VCM or oil consumption. HOWEVER, i've had annoying issues with the computer. At around 100k, the Emissions light comes on intermittently. No solution to fix it from dealer. This past year, every possible warning light has come on. Doesnt affect driving or anything...just really annoying. No solution from dealership. Took it to a local shop, and they diagnosed the issue was an outdated software. I had two choices, replace the computer for $8k or reflash it for less than $300. Had it reflashed, warning went away. That last only about 10 miles. Warning light are back on, and then disappeared 2 days ago. I miss the days cars didnt have all these computer management systems.

@@ReneLopez-qc2vx My wife had problems with her 2016 Pilot. It was flashing several error messages (Stability Assist, Hill Start Problem,VSA problem,EPS) It was diagnosed as a cylinder 4 misfire at the stealership. The dealer said that it needed spark plugs for this issue. I told them to go ahead, the vehicle was serviced, and then picked it up. The next day the alarms came back up. I called and explained that we still had this problem. I checked the car with my scanner and found that the same error code that the dealer told me about was back on again (P0304 for cylinder 4 misfire detected. I did some research and found that there is a TSB 20-100 that references this issue along with a 10 year, 150K mile extended warranty. Warranty Extension: MIL Comes On with DTC P0420/P0430, P030x, and/or P219A/B (With Software Update) with the "P030x" referring to the cylinder 4 misfire that I had been having. After they performed procedure "B" (replacement of the fuel injectors) and giving me a refund for the spark plug replacement that didn't fix the problem, it's been 8 months now with no issues. They didn't seem aware that there was a TSB bulletin for this issue, so it paid this time to do a little research to find it myself.

I believe you need to put 5.7 quarts of oil unless I'm missing something 🤔?

Great video. You do make it look easy. I would like to add one tip. I save a section of cardboard "larger the better" to place under the work area. If I spill any oil it lands on the cardboard. It makes clean up so much easier and I can reuse it about 6 times before I need a new one. Again thanks for the video.

Hi Rene I accessed my oil filter by pulling out some push rivets and peeling back the thin plastic engine cover under the wheel arch. I was looking for a way to stop the oil from the filter from dripping all over the frame. Really messy. Next time I may make a cardboard chute for the oil to direct it to the collector.
@ReneLopez-qc2vx7 жыл бұрын
sounds like a great idea. let me know how that works out for you.

I remove the Right-Hand wheel to get access to the oil filter. Yeah, one more step to jack the car, but worth it. I started doing that on our 2003 Honda Odyssey years ago. Like Martin when he mentioned the chute, I cut the bottom off a milk jug, then cut a wide U-shape (when viewed with the jug upside down) out of one side (or across two sides) for access to loosen the filter with a filter wrench. With the milk jug cap on, the oil falls into the milk jug and doesn't spill all over the place.

Rene, thanks for the video, but it's entertaining how you change oil on the Honda Pilot. 1. You do not need a jack or lift, just slide under the car. 2. Turn the wheel all the way to the right, you will see the oil filter, which can be easier remove from the outside. 3. The amount of oil used is incorrect. 5.0 qt is too little. You will need up to 5.7 qt. preferrably 5.4 Love the mess you made with the filter.

Ron tan thanks! Ya, my first attempt at an oil change I didn’t use ramps or a jack, but they do give me a little breathing room. And yes, I did discover after making the video that it needed an extra half quart to get the oil level right on the dip stick.

hi Rene, thanks for the video how frequent do i have to change the pilot engine oil? manual is not really straight forward regarding this, it says every 5 K kilom under difficult driving conditions & every 10 under normal ones i was changing every 5 but then recently i made a long road trip under high temperatures & difficult conditions, when i took it to a proffisional 3rd party workshop after using oil for 7500 km they told me oil is still good & i could use it up to 10 K
@ReneLopez-qc2vx7 жыл бұрын
Hey Basil...Im on the side of the world that uses mile conversion, so based on your km conversion i would play it safe and change the oil after that long road trip. I alway err the side of caution if you are ever unsure. Motor oil technology has come a long way over the years, but going over 10,000 km between changes gets me nervous under normal driving conditions. In my opinion, i think motor oils that say good for 10k miles (in the US) / 16k km, is a gimmick...but again, that's just my opinion. Give yourself some piece of mind and change it. Cheers!!

Thanks for the video. Is it gonna be any damage to the oil filter if I didn't preload them with some oil before screwing then on? Thanks again.
@ReneLopez-qc2vx7 жыл бұрын
it's not crucial to preload, but it's better to start the engine with some oil in the filter versus empty. If the filter wasn't preload, the oil pump will have nothing in the filter to circulate the oil at first start up.
