Why don't you use the same trailers for all of your tests? You let some trucks tow closed, rectangular trailers with water reservoirs inside while others tow open trailers with a car or ATVS on it. Design of the trailer affects the drag coefficient a lot and on a 10 minute uphill run at 60MP/h it will have a significant effect on the final results
@AdamSandLTD9 жыл бұрын
+Demetre Gvaramia I actually agree on this one. Standard closed trailers would make a little more sense, while this is more real world, its not consistent. As a Nissan Dealer I am excited for this truck to show up. I really feel like Nissan isnt playing all their cards on their first hand. It seems as though they have used components that are more than capable of providing higher payload and towing numbers, and have under-rated the truck for the first year. Kind of like how Ram has a 3500 w/ Aisin that tows 30,000 lbs with 850 lb ft of torque. They change NOTHING but some engine tuning when ford goes up a notch, and boom, now it tows 31,500 with 900 lb ft of torque. @Bradamsmx54 жыл бұрын
I love the idea of adjustable headlights on trucks. They should all come with this feature as standard. European cars had this as a feature in the late 80's and early 90's with projector beam headlights. No idea why American manufacturers haven't adopted this yet. Even today, brand new Chevy, Ford, Ram, and Toyota trucks will blind you with their low beams when they are towing even a moderate load or have just a couple hundred pounds in the bed. It is insane that the manufacturers don't put more effort into this safety aspect of their trucks.

Finally were able to test this XD on the Ike Gauntlet as many truck guys were waiting for. Great Job again to all you guys. The payload is much less than the F150. For a 5/8's ton truck you would think that the payload and towing capacity would be a little higher. I think the only benefit of this truck would be maybe, having a stable platform while towing 11,500 lbs and maybe having the longevity of a diesel. But given its a diesel, maintenance, repair, and upkeep costs will be more than the average 1/2 ton gas truck. For $60,000, many diesel owners may opt to invest in a 3/4 ton with much more capability.

Decibel meter is an arguable test, because you need different types, for different environments. For example, using a standard ambient noise meter, will be a totally different measurement, for the same sound, going outdoor to indoor. When you measure inside of a vehicle, you want to measure the changes in atmospheric pressure and not the ambient noise itself, for an accurate reading, which is why dbdra doesn't use ambient noise meters and uses sound pressure level meters.

Considering the fact that "good" or "bad", suitable or not depend to a very big extend on the NEEDS of the user, this "one number" doesn't make sense at all. Especially not, since we are talking about very (!) expensive gear. Don't try to make something complex easy, if it simply is NOT. You will fail. If it would be that easy, there would be only be one truck for sale right now. Break it down into sections, show what the strong and weak points of the vehicles are, that way, you give the users some orientation what trucks COULD be suitable for their specific needs. If you can make that happen, this would be a great contribution indeed! Thanks! :)

I will say this. For all the people saying you can get a 2500 (or 250) U.S. version for less money that pulls more, that truck will be a mildly equipped 4X2 version & probably a previous model year if it is a diesel. A well equipped 1500 Chevy Silverado 4X4 with a gas V8 is in the $50k-$60k range. This is a well equipped 1/2 ton HD with a diesel for the same price. So many people say this truck should be in the mid $30k range. Mid $30k is what you will pay for a well equipped Honda Accord with a 4cyl in 2016. I'm assuming none of you have bought a truck since 2005 when my dad paid $40k for his 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 CUMMINS dually at dealer cost. & his truck is mildly equipped & was one of the last 2005's left late in 2006. I urge you all to go look at new trucks & see what works for you. Most of you will be disappointed at what you find. Also, most U.S. based manufactures build their trucks in Mexico or overseas these days. This truck was built in the U.S.

I just bought a Titan XD diesel after watching your reviews. Sure the payload and towing capacity is similar to most modern half tons but it is a MUCH MUCH more stable towing platform than a 1/2 ton. Pulling my camper with an F150 in any sort of a cross wind was a little nerve racking resulting in some sway. Went to an F250, much better (obviously) but for a daily driver it was way to thirsty and rough riding. The Titan XD that I have now seems to be the sweet spot. Rides really nice (better than my wife's Rogue in some ways), gets "quasi" reasonable fuel economy empty (I've seen 22 mpg), and is very stable pulling.

I test drove the new Titan XD and it was a pretty great experience. I never had to use the service brakes - just manually downshifted to come to a stop. Its a heavy truck - around 7,000 LBS and that really helps in Alaska for winter traction and when strong crosswinds try to throw you into the other lane. I would like to see Consumer Reports do a long term test. Maybe in 3 years we will know what the reliability is like. The engine and transmission are solid...but will the electronics and all the components prove reliable(?)... as reliable as a Toyota Tundra with a perfect CR reliability history? Gotta wait and see. I used to have a 2002 F-250 4x4 with 7.3 diesel. 260 hp and 525 torque. The new titan, 310 hp and 555 torque. My truck weighed 7000 lbs, this truck weighs over 7000 lbs. I had a programmer that added 50-100 hp (depending on settings) and it was rated to tow 12,500 lbs. The new titan is rated at 12,000 lbs. My truck was a 4 door crew cab, so is this truck. The way I see it, this is just a slightly more efficient, more technologically advanced version of that truck. Seems like they didn't shoot for the stars yet barely got off the ground. Nissan does such a good job with their Infiniti line of SUV's (my wife loves her JX35) yet the trucks are underwhelming.
@davereeder6106 жыл бұрын
Don Olypopper I am comparing a new truck to a truck that is 16 years old. This isn't the first Titan though either. I don't know what Toyota has to do with it either, I didn't mention Toyota. I have seen a few long term reviews and they were less than favorable. Poor fuel mileage (14 mpg combined +/-) and reliability problems (multiple trips to dealer under warranty during 1 year review). My point is this, its a 7,000 pound "heavy duty half-ton" truck with only 310 hp and 555 torque. That is almost identical power output and weight to the old truck I had. For the technology modern car companies have today it should be a stronger performing truck. I was thinking about trading in my '14 Tundra but that isn't going to happen now. It is slower than other half tons, doesn't pull that much, and has lower fuel mileage than gas trucks.

I agree. I went from an 03 2500 5.9 Cummins with a tuner on it to a 17 XD 5.0 Cummins. They squatted the same amount. The 5.9 had better fuel economy, but the 5.0 rides nicer, pulls better, and stops better.

Could you guys take a half ton Silverado 6.2L or Ford EcoBoost 3.5L and do another tow test with 10,000lb? So the Titan XD is designed to be in-between a 3/4 ton and a 1/2 ton right? But it only has the capability of a 1/2 while getting the Fuel Economy of a 3/4 Ton. The only way I can see people buying this truck over a 1/2 ton is if it absolutely destroys them by a wide margin on your tow test. like how the Cummins 6.7L Ram 2500 took 7 minutes on your Ike Gauntlet but the 6.4L Ram 2500 took 10 minutes towing the same weight but really struggled going up hill (I remember you guys could only hit 35mph going uphill in the gas truck).
@TFLtruck9 жыл бұрын
We will be doing more half-ton truck testing. The Titan XD is also about comfort, longevity, and durability. The heavy frame and other components should improve longevity when doing work. We know it is comfortable. However, we cannot test for longevity and durability during our short time with the truck.
@wildbill23c9 жыл бұрын
+xXBurntBaconXx The reason people will buy it is because they want to show off, it really isn't any better than running a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck down the road as far as economy. The price of the Titan XD is completely ridiculous and you could jump into a 3/4 ton pickup for less.

It seems odd that Nissan would build this truck to compete with all the other trucks in the 1/2 ton segment, but not be any more powerful or economical. My 2008 Titan pro 4x can carry 2000 pounds payload and pull 9400 lbs. this new one is a total disappointment. I regularly pull my 35 ft travel trailer and my pro4x does extremely well but my gas mileage isn't great. Well I thought it wasn't, I get 9.9 avg pulling the trailer. Every time we take it out. The only reason we are looking to get a new truck is to improve gas mileage while towing and not towing. This barely beats my current truck in both respects. The only benefit may be the heavier truck for more stability while towing heavy loads. I also like the 6.5 ft bed. Did everybody see the Ike run with the 2014 pro4x and 10000 pounds in tow. The Titan did it in 9.08. This new one did it 30 seconds faster and 1 mpg more. Come on. Seriously. This is not enough of an improvement Nissan in 11 years. Just my ten cents.
@AB-coyote9 жыл бұрын
+Dave West The 1st gen Titan is not in the same league as the XD when towing at the Max. remember that the XD weighs about a 1000 lbs more than that King Cab PRO4X they tested. The 1st Gen Titan Transmission, and especially the rear axle wont hold up like the Aisin trans in the XD if working like that daily. Nissan actually did a pretty good job with the 1st gen trans though. That axle leaves a bit to be desired. Don't get me wrong, the 1st gen Titan does a great job towing. I own a 2013 SV CC 4x2 with the standard 2.94 gears. The most I pulled was 6500+ lbs, but it did a much better job than I anticipated. Was very pleased. The Payload on your 08 PRO4X Is closer to 1700 lbs BTW. My 2wd CC is rated for 2015 lbs, but the Door jam list actual weight at 1653 lbs. Most likely because of my Value Truck Package, and step bars etc.
@davidbryanwoodworksandmore9 жыл бұрын
+Anthony But Well I'm sure your right about some of those items however I've owned my truck since new in 2007. I think I know Nissan Titan more than most. Your 2013 isn't the same tower as mine. Certainly with the gears and I wouldn't tow much with it either. My payload is 1960lbs not 1700. The payload amounts actually have changed frequently but my year and model is near 2000lbs. I have checked so many times through the years in comparison to other trucks. When we bought our 35 ft trailer, we needed that higher payload for tongue weight and cargo. Many trucks didn't have nearly 1000 lbs of tongue weight for 1/2 ton segment. This new xd couldn't even have the 3 people in it while they were testing the Ike run. The last model had more weight in it and did it in 30 seconds slower. Gas engine and all. I understand the weight of the xd is more, considerably, but if you can't have more than 2 people in the truck, how am I going to take my trailer and family of five camping?
@AB-coyote9 жыл бұрын
I KNOW mine doesn't have the same towing capacity. You have a MAX rating of 9300 lbs with your 3.36 rear end. I have a max rating on 7400lbs. This does NOT change the payload at all. What does your Door Jam say? It's funny because when they tested the Pro4x King Cab they exceeded the tow capacity by 600 lbs ,and still put 3 people in it. I can Tell you the 1st gen Titan is a towing Beast even with the 2.94 gears for the 1/2 ton class. I towed a 2015 Frontier Crew Cab on a uhaul trailer over 200 miles, and it just glided down the Hwy. Never needed to shift even on the hills. I have owned 7 Nissan trucks. I have followed the Titan since its introduction too closely to be honest.
@davidbryanwoodworksandmore9 жыл бұрын
+Anthony But 2008 had payload change from 1450 to 2000 or so. I'm talking about the stated max payload just like they state the xd has a max payload of around 2000 lbs also. Or less on the pro 4x crew cab. Anyways it sounds like you enjoy your truck as I do. It just reaffirms my keeping mine.

I like this Titan XD, a mix of 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton thing. I would've bought it and put all my money on the truck BUT I personally think Nissan could've gone full blown Heavy Duty with this XD, I think it will look even better with 8-lug wheels and beefy highway/ all-terrain/ off-road tires. Why I didn't bought it? The 5.6 Endurance was way too late in the party, I always wanted an extended cab but again the model is delayed, it has just too much tech features I don't need for a daily driver (I don't like small vehicles). The Cummins V-8 is unique for this truck that thinks its a 3/4-ton but its a 1/2-ton, BUT not being a towing guy I couldn't justify owning a diesel truck. I don't really if its American built or Mexican built, it's still a truck, you take care of it it'll take care of you.

jose hernandez Why wouldnt it be able to use one? The fifth wheel trailer they own and are using is rated to tow like 30,000lbs so they can push a F-350 and Dodge 3500 to their respected max towing capabilities. That trailer in itself being built to handle that much is built incredibly heavy. There are many classes of fifth wheel trailers that are not rated so high and are far lighter. Same reason the new F-series Fords are being built with aluminum. Using lighter materials means the trucks payload and amount it can tow goes up. The weight it saves using aluminum gets translated to higher payload and weight it can tow. This video is simply showing how it preforms towing at its maxed capabilities. In the real world you would not be using this class of fifth wheel trailer behind a truck like this.

At least one of the Engine Brake aftermarket suppliers is pledging to have a product on the market by this summer for the 5.0L Cummins. That will be about $1,100 upgrade. One of the turbocharger repair shops claimed that they can upgrade the wheel on the compressor. And Banks Power has a video on KZbin of a prototype air-inlet they have installed on a pre-production model. There is a company that installs gooseneck products that can install an in-bed connection in the wall of the bed for $ 200. In my city, the Titan XD 4x4 Platinum Reserve has a sticker price of $ 64,150. So you are looking at $ 70,000 to get the truck up to par, here in south Texas. I would like to see a rugged locking fuel hatch on a $ 70,000 truck.

I am enjoying watching all the new Titan XD videos. I live along the Gulf Coast in a county with 5 million drivers. We need trucks here that use less fuel and are more comfortable to drive while sitting in horrendous traffic jams. Bio-diesel fuel is hard to find here, so that is not a real concern. Many people tow campers, horse-trailers, products for home construction. There is no snow, mountain slopes, or cold weather. Cold-starts is not an issue, but idling in 100 degree weather is an issue. Only reason most of the city folks here buy 4WD as just a status symbol. I am just saying that the Titan XD will sell here. There are lots of Nissan truck fans here and some can afford a new truck. I think this the Titan XD sounds better than the 2015 RAM EcoDiesel. I am curious how long the turbo seal will last before needing a new seal. How hard will it be to replace the drive chain ?? Is it possible to add an engine brake. It sounds like the Holset compressor wheel could be upgraded. I am guessing the tuner hackers will find a tweet to get a few more hp and ft-lbs. But that cost money. I bet the 2017 model advertises higher numbers. Will this transmission last 300,000 miles ?? I want this truck, and would put a slide-in camper in the bed.

I have to say that overall I think I'm disappointed. The uphill time was slower than I expected, but that issue pales in comparison to the surprisingly bad MPG for a diesel. By comparison, TFL Truck's 2015 Ram Cummins 2500 did a slightly heavier load (13k vs 11,7xx) in 1:11 less time and .5 MPG better. And what's worse, the Ram probably weighs about the same but has much higher payload and tow ratings. The only upside is the Ram might have cost more. The plot is definitely thinkening for Nissan.
@Ratkill90008 жыл бұрын
They need a larger DEF tank in it to make it worth while. They should have gone with a VGT/VNT turbo instead of a two stage turbo. It would have given a built in exhaust brake plus work the torque and horsepower a little bit better than doing essentially a fixed turbo. Considering how little weight this truck can tow, 5th wheel should not be an option in my opinion.

@MattCruz099 жыл бұрын
Love the videos, but this scoring system needs some fine tuning. You cant deduct a point every time you apply the brake to a truck going downhill, breaking is inevitable and this will basically deduct a letter grade ( based off 100 pts) to a truck, still its essential to every test, but it just needs to be reworked somehow. Btw, where was this system for the 2016 6.2 Silverado you tested prior?

Another great video
@jjjrickey8 жыл бұрын
Love your reviews, they're a very fair comparison. Youguys do a great job at leveling the playing field; at least to the best of your abilities... I'd like to see you only review the max-capability trims (ex. the longest wheelbase F150: extended cab 8ft box; has highest tow rating, yet you reviewed a quad cab) although I understand you're limited by whatever you can get your hands on. Why is using the brakes a negative? Their sole purpose is to slow and stop the vehicle. The engines main purpose is to accelerate the vehicle, so why ask it to do the brake's job? Unless, of course, it's absolutely necessary, for example: your trailer brakes have begun to overheat and are significantly loosing power, the truck is accelerating and you're on the edge of over heating the truck's brakes. At this moment, engine breaking is required. A good driver would have analyzed the road conditions and downshifted already. In this video you never mentioned brake fade or uncontrolled acceleration, so what's wrong with continuing to use that brake pedal? Moreover, brakes are much cheaper and easier to service than engine internals or exhaust brake components. So why put the wear on the engine if the brakes could safely take the wear? My $0.02
@jessaphillips28468 жыл бұрын
you have never towed in the mountains... if you ride your brakes going down a mountain like the Ike gauntlet you won't have any brakes left by the time you get about halfway down the hill, you will literally burn brand new brake pads off the truck. that's why semi trucks and more recently most diesel pickups come with an exhaust brake or "Jake brake".
@jjjrickey8 жыл бұрын
Well of course you can't ride the brakes, you need to pulse them so they get a chance to cool off. But the driver in this video never mentioned anything about his brakes getting hot, so why spin the engine if your brakes can take the load just fine. I'm basically questioning the grounds of his complaint about lack of engine braking. I think in this case the truck was right, the thing isn't supposed to do the brakes job, its only supposed to take part of the load off them. You're still required to use the brakes, the guy in this video thinks its a negative that he had to move his foot a few times to maintain speed. I'm not just a troll, I do know my way around a pickup truck. All I'm saying is use the brakes first, save the engine if you can. Obviously on a 7-10% grade you're probably going to want to use some engine braking. But a smart driver would be conservative and use the brakes before using the engine, unlike in this video where they'd rather ware the engine instead of using their right foot.

Why not use the same amount of trailer weight on all the 1/2 ton trucks? That'd make it a more consistent and fair test versus anything from 7k to 10k+ trailers.

I’d tow with the 2017 Nissan Titan XD 4x4 Single Cab SV because it’s a long bed instead of the Crew Cab Short Bed if I was doin the Extreme Ike Gauntlet I’d do it In 4WD not 2WD because it makes a lot more sense than towing in 2WD

I will never buy a domestic brand truck or car again. I had a dodge 4.7 l quad cab, had 45k miles and owned it 1 yr. My father in law owned a shop and paid the labor for me. I spent 2000 for parts in a year to keep it going. I bought a used tundra to replace it 10 years ago and still have that tundra and just now having to replace the water pump. Bought a chevy trailblazer for my wife, had lots of electrical issues, blew coil packs a lot. Radio would make a pop sound when opening the door and would lose its memory. Now I have owned a GMC Acadia for 2 years. Had to replace the throttle body, ac condenser had holes, tie rods, motor mounts, the rear ac damper motor is out and only blows cool air. I didn't know they were plagued with transmission issues until mine started to slip between 3-4 gears and reverse. New trans is 4k and I owe 13000 still and its worth 5000 as is. Thank you GM for a crap car. So yes I'm now a Japanese vehicle fan and Korean. American fans can talk, but I would put my 13 year old tundras longevity up against yours anytime. My best friend has had a tundra he bought brand new in 01 and with 401000 miles jets only had to change the radiator.

That Cummins engine is actually not very specific to the titan xd. It is an engine that has already existed and been tweaked for that truck. However Nissan has no rights to the engine so other companies could very well use same package unlike the 6.7L cummins in a Ram.

This is the only Nissan I would buy and they don't sell it in Australia.
