2016 Reno Air Races Unlimiteds [HD]

[EXPAND ME] Congrats to Steven Hinton, Jr. and the rest of Team Voodoo on their third Unlimited Gold victory!
Highlights from the pits, ramp, and, for the first time, pylons during the 2016 Reno National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada. This video is meant to be more of a "raw" and uncut style of coverage, and as such, there is not much done in the way of editing. Expect a more "cinematic" style of video (featuring all classes of aircraft) to come out later this year!
As this was my first trip out to the pylons, shooting with new equipment, there are obviously some things I can do better. To start, I will have much better sound equipment by next year's races. However, if there is anything else I can improve on, please let me know! Feedback is always important to keep growing and getting better.

Congratulations to Steven Hinton, Jr., Bob Button, and the rest of Team Voodoo on setting an amazing milestone in the world of aviation last week at a remote location in Idaho. The current 3km World Speed Record, previously held by Will Whiteside, was set in dramatic fashion as Voodoo surpassed 531 MPH over 4 high speed passes, the 1st of which was clocked at over 554 MPH! Team Voodoo also surpassed the "retired" 3km record held by Lyle Shelton in the F8F-2 Bearcat "Rare Bear" (528 MPH average speed). Although the team needed to exceed Rare Bear's speed by 1% (533 MPH), Shelton's record was set under different regulations and thus can never truly be beaten. Hinton, Jr. and Voodoo are officially in the record books as the fastest single-engine, propeller-driven aircraft in history. *CONGRATULATIONS!*

Really nice footage, but sounds like your micophone couldn't handel the sound. Or was it just a wrong setting in the editing process ?

Thanks for the compliment on the footage. Yeah, unfortunately I could not get a hold of a better microphone for the races this year...I instead chose to invest in some new camera equipment. However, I will have much better sound equipment for next year's Races!

Thanks for the kind words! I'll aim to have much better sound equipment at this year's race, last year I chose to invest in better camera equipment rather than sound (being on a college budget I was kind of limited to one-or-the-other last year) so hopefully it'll all come together this year!

Rare Bear was on static display in the pits this year, and didn't race due to the owner having personal life issues he needed to attend to. He has said that the Bear will return to the race course in 2017! Strega did not participate due to the lack of a sponsor. However, I've seen a post from a trusted team member who says they've already secured a sponsor for 2017, so Strega should be back as well.

Fred Taylor So much hazards are involved in this. Back in 2013 there was a Mustang that nose dived into the crowd. Another moment was where a plane ended up stalling and crashing, but not in the crowd. I go every year and I recognize it's a risk just being there, but it's the sound and the sights that always draws me back.

I saw Bob Hoover doing stunts there, he went in a gully, saw a big dust puff, thought he ate it, he came back and landed, took a foot off the wing of his P-51@ 300MPH.....what a great pilot!

Voodoo has a highly modified, race-prepped Rolls-Royce Merlin engine under the cowl, and has several airframe modifications that are considered a radical departure from the original P-51D airframe. Shortened wings, a shortened propeller, a smaller radiator scoop, and a sleeker cockpit/canopy are just a few of the modifications that have been installed on Voodoo over the years. Last week, Voodoo (which looks very different now, they removed the heavy purple paint job and went with a lightweight white paint) set the 3km World Speed Record for piston powered aircraft in a remote location in Idaho. The 4-pass average speed was 531 MPH, and their first pass was clocked at 554 MPH!

I understand why some people don't like highly modified racers, but I think "castrated" is not the right word to describe it. However, some of these airplanes would be destroyed if not for race owners/pilots, and I would much rather have them flying as racers than rotting as derelicts.
