I was truck shopping, pretty much every brand minus Nissan. Ford 150 FX4, GMC 1500 SLE, Ram 1500 Sport and Toyotas. Don't like the Tundra much but I can respect it, it has its place. I settled on the Tacoma TRD Off Road DC manual. Decent cab for the two kids and will tow the 3500lb bunk house single axle off road trailer I plan to get soon. Simple truck, legendary reliability and good enough off road and on road. YES half tons I looked at were better in some regards, but they were also around 6-10k more with similar options with questionable domestic reliability. Couldn't be happier

In my 2016 TRD 4x4 off road edition pulling over a 4,000lb 21ft CC, I managed 14mpgs driving 60-65mph. I've also noticed the more I've broken my truck in, the better fuel economy I'm getting. I average around 20-21 around town, and up to almost 24 on the highway.

I was thinking about getting one myself, my trailer is only 2000 lbs, Nissan Titan only gets about 10-12 pulling it. You are getting 17mpg pulling a 4000lb trailer and 24 when not pulling?

Wouldn't change much. At highway speed, RPM's would be exactly the same. ECT mode just increases pedal sensitivity and revs higher before shifting. Other than that, once you're at a steady speed, nothing is different.

Let's remember that Tacoma is usually for towing small trailers, or not towing at all. The figures are great in my view. This is a go ahead for me to get a new 2016 Tacoma next week.

Love these real world tests! In the past on these tests, you have compared the calculated MPGs to the MPG shown on the truck computer but I don't see that you did that this time. I like being able to see how accurate the computer number is to actual so would recommend including that when you can.

I've hauled plenty big loads with my 2002 Tacoma V6 but never at 4600rpm. that's just dumb. 3000rpm max. for me. I like my truck it's been good to me. keep it 55mph and get about 17mpg with a 4000lb load.

Wow that’s not bad. My dad use to tow a 25ft camper or maybe slightly bigger with a 78 cutlass with a 260v8. He just took it easy and never had any problems.

The mile high could also be affecting the mileage. I've had a difference 350 lbs or higher in my half ton and it offset the mpg's. They didn't mention wind conditions and avg speed. When towing I'm a 63-67 mph on avg.
@whatfreedom7

I bought a 21ft about 3400lbs and my 06 Tacoma rarely gets over 2500 it does go a little higher pulling steep hills. I don’t let it get over 3,000 max probably myself I just take it easy and try to keep the RPMs down. The first trip I used 5/8 a tank one way about 1 :45 min trip and I realized I pushed it too hard. The same trip no load was only 1/4 tank. So the next trip I drove it easy with slow pull offs kept the rpm low as I could within reason and just took my time then when I climbed a steep mountain to the campsite I just babied it and I got way better gas mileage even pulling a much bigger climb. It made a huge difference.

Not bad for a small truck that seems to have been designed more for off road fun. People that will be towing close to that weight more often will probably buy a full size truck anyway.

I'm totally interested as I tow similar weight with my 13 Tacoma & thinking on a '16. They do mention in the video, many Taco owner's would tow something a little smaller. I agree, that a 1/2 T may be a bit more capable, but I like the size, and off road capability of a mid size, especially the Tacoma.

As owning a 16 Tacoma I wouldn't have believed this without seeing it but when driving from Minnesota across the plains with a steady headwind, a 1200 pound trailer at around 1500 feet elevation I averaged 14 miles per gallon at 74 mph. Between 8,000 and 10,000 feet in Colorado under the same weight and speed I was averaging 18 to 21 miles per gallon. Air density made a huge difference for aerodynamics. Even though there was a 25 to 30 horse power loss the fuel consumption reflected that.

Not sure if the TRD has tow haul mode but if it doesn’t the truck should’ve been in ECT power mode and using the quick shift (basically manual transmission) should’ve been kept in 4th gear. I do that when I tow and keep it at about 55-60. Holds steady at about 2500-3000 rpms and whenever I come up to a hill, since it’s in 4th, it can hit the higher rpm to maintain power. That being said, that is an insanely heavy trailer even though the taco is rated at 6800 lbs.

Good video but I have to give constructive criticism.1) Very few of us buying a truck in this category care about fuel economy. I have never in my life bought a truck based on fuel mileage, could care less. The difference is so insignificant compared to the price of the vehicle. Save those mpg videos for the base line trucks with manual windows and no air conditioning. Fuel mileage is like asking about the weather, its just a conversation to be social. Most of us purchasing a truck that's around 35k or more would buy a truck based on looks or paint color before we even consider fuel mileage. And it is really an oxymoron when there are so many other factors that save you money. Diesel will get better fuel mileage but in the end you lose money on all other factors and you don't save a dime.2) Most of us don't buy midsize to pull, we just benefit in having a box to load, have an easier time parking and can fit into more garages and parking spots which is a luxury you can't put a price on.

While flat towing on the highway, the weight is mostly irrelevant. At constant speed, drag is your enemy. The weight will effect acceleration/deceleration. Drag increases by the square of the speed, so if economy is what you are seeking, slow down. A couple quick and dirty examples 40 squared is 1600, 55^2 is 3025, 65^2 is 4225 and 70^2 is 4900, just to provide an idea how non linear drag is and why your mileage is so drastically affected by speed.
@krabkrabkrab
@krabkrabkrab 8 жыл бұрын
+Robb M Wow. Finally found someone who knows what he's talking about. Yes, at 70mph, almost all loss of fuel economy is due to wind resistance. The weight of the trailer is almost irrelevant as long as the speed is constant. And why are all these dingbats concerned about 4500rpm? Toyotas can do this all day no prob.

+Yogangster1995 I had heard that. Just seems more pronounced when towing. Normally I might save an mpg or so. But towing I might save 6-7 mpg. Doing 65 I'm always downshifting as well. Doing most of the trip in 3rd gear. Doing 55 I stay in 4th gear, maybe hit 5th a lil.

Your Tacoma had the Offroad package but did it also have the towing package which includes a second rad. for the transmission, better brakes and shocks? I have a 2014 Tacoma TRD Offroad with towing package. In the summer I tow a 20' travel trailer without any problem. I stay in 4th gear and drive at 55-60 MPH. My RPMs typically don't go over 3,000. I also use a tonneau cover to cut wind resistance in the bed. Have you done any tests with a cover on the bed? Wonder if it makes any real difference to MPG,

I kinda feel like this video is a set up to establish a bias control for a future review. Throw the Tacoma under the bus so to speak. Maybe to put the F150 tow test they plan to release in a more positive light. I still haven't seen an answer in the comments to the question whether or not the (Toyota recommended for towing) ECT Power button was used during the test. But after watching the video I will assume it was not. Also, by towing in D instead of the Toyota owners manual recommended S4 or S5 AND running cruise control (against Toyota towing recommendations) and holding 70mph (again against Toyota owners manual recommended maximum of 65mph), the truck was clearly stuck in 3rd gear the entire time revving the piss out of it. As a 16 Tacoma owner that tows a 5k lb, 17' travel trailer, I know there was better settings to be used to get more efficient use of the engines available torque while towing. (ie. S4 transmission setting, ECT Power mode selected, and 35psi in the rear tires) Then I would have expected 10-12 MPG and a max engine rpm while cruising level @ 65mph of 3200 rpm. However, even with these changes I would not expect to see MPG any higher than 12mpg. But the video MPG isn't what has me disappointed, it's the fact that you show the Tacoma only able to tow this load by revving 4700 rpm when this is just not true. If I was watching videos trying to decide if the Tacoma was up to the task of the occasional tow this would definitely sway me away. But it has been my experience that this just simply isn't the case with the 16 Tacoma. In my opinion it is completely capable of towing 5600 lb. without revving to the moon if towed as per the manuals recommendations. Sorry guys, but your test is invalid in my opinion due to these discrepancies.

I feel like that trailer is a bit much for your average user in that truck. I would expect something like a 10ft lawn trailer with an atv, or dirtbikes or something like that. 5,600 lbs 3 horse trailer is a bit over kill for that thing.

Question, Toyota is telling me the towing capacity for my VIN# (2017 Tacoma TRD off road) is 3500 not the 5600 as advertised. Any Idea what is going on with that?
@rmanrique6
@rmanrique6 4 жыл бұрын
I thought all TRD models includes the towing package, so you must have the 5600... I have a 2012 TRD sport, I hope can pull 5600 cuz I'm buying travel trailer soon.

Tacos have always been notoriously bad on mpg while towing. Looking at the video, I get the conclusion that like all of us in the Taco community, this truck needs a diesel. For how it fits nearly anywhere, the resale value, solid build, and off road prowess.. It's a winner for me. That's why I bought one. It's not meant to be a towing truck day in day out.

Sadly, I don't think the Taco will get a Diesel engine until about 2020. Toyota is very hesitant to add a diesel engine.

I'd love to give Diesel Toys a lot of money and have one built. Would just be a fantastic truck. The Ranger is coming back and if it brings a diesel, I feel the name is still strong in the US to pull customers towards it.

5600lbs trailer weight. I had a 2006, with 5000lbs behind it, it struggled and the RPM was also up, like in your video. Driving a long ways like that made towing a long distance, not very enjoyable. When a trailer dealer says it can tow, you'd be stupid to tow that much. It can but not well. That's my personal experience. I think toyota should have put at least 300ponies and 20more lbs of Tq in this truck to make it a solid tower. Thanks for the video. Been waiting for one. Would like to see a Colorado/canyon - Tacoma comparison. Cheers

+C Steele, Toyota would probably tell anyone wanting a "solid tower" as you put it, that they would be better off buying the full-size Tundra.
@chadsteele1

LK Campbell I agree but my thought was, even at 5000lbs, it was not enjoyable over a long distance. Yes it can do it. No it does not do it well. Which to me makes it more of a tow nothing more than 4000lbs comfortably over long distances. That's from personal experience.

I think for comfort long distance towing, anything above 4000lbs. is not just stressful on the truck but the driver as well. I sold my Tacoma sadly and bought something that I felt could handle the job better. It did. Chip Kalvin

Not sure what's wrong with your all's camera, but in the past several vids, I've noticed some weird discolored bars running across the screen. It's most noticeable at 2:28 and on, you can see it discoloring the trailer and anything else with a lighter color. It's pretty distracting to me, as I thought something was wrong with my monitors at first, hah. Might want to check your camera out and see if it can be fixed in the settings.

Thus the reason to buy the appropriate truck for the job. Towing that trailer (especially the frontal area) is asking a lot of a mid-size truck. It should pull your average freshwater fishing boat just fine though.

Yikes! That's what I average with my 40' ISC powered RV at 33k pulling my over 5k lb Land Cruiser out here in the western states, Az in particular. Kinda surprised that it couldn't maintain 70 in a lower gear. Not sure what part of CO the test was done in though.

can you guys do the same loop without the trailer? Also its amazing at how low the mpg was I was guessing around 12 as well.. In all honestly if your gonna tow that much your better off with a full size and actually get a couple more mpg. the price is also way to much I priced a Tacoma 4 door with a 4 door f150 and after haggling the f150 was about the same price. for the about the same price its no sense to get a mid size truck when the full size is about the same price quicker and will get or beat the mpg of the Tacoma.. oh yea forget the chevy diesel that's a 4 thousand option I priced one and it was over 40k. If you want diesel get the ram 3.0 diesel for the same price

I understand the need to set your constants: Speed, trailer weight, cruise control (surprisingly), etc. Why not set your truck classes though; 'Mid-size', 'full size', etc. 5600lbs, while it is still within the mfg limits, is really way outside the reality of what you or I would pull with this class of truck to any extent. I've pulled a 2300lb Popup trailer all over the country with A 2002 Taco with a 2.7 4cyl, and it did it extremely well. On the hills, I jgear it with the rest of the trucks; slow down, and take a hit on the mileage. Flat country, 55-60mph, 4-5th gear, 18mpg all day. Id never strap 5600 lbs to its butt, unless it was just to bring a load from downtown home. 70mph, 5600lbs, cruise control, gimmee a break. Next you're going to do this test at your 'Gauntlet'? And you're going to push it with the same constants; 70mph, etc. Well, its pointless. Maybe your purpose is to make the manufacturer look bad?
