What's new? Toyota swapped in a set of tried-and-true transmissions, fitted a Lexus V6 under the hood, tweaked the frame and formed it out of stronger steel and covered it in new sheetmetal. On the inside we get a new dashboard, infotainment systems from the Highlander and a steering wheel from the larger Tundra. If you're a Taco man, that's all you need to know before you run out and buy one. For the rest of us, join me as we dive deep into the latest "Taco."

First thing I noticed when I opened the 3rd gen Tacoma's hood was there is a lot of room in the engine bay. Everything looks easily accessible and should be very easy to work on. Most modern engine bays aren't so friendly.

I really like this review for the new Tacoma much better than other reviews because you actually talk about what packages you can get and what accessories are available as well as a comparison to previous Tacomas. A lot of reviews out there only talk about the trim they got their hands on and criticize what they don't have which you could get in other trim levels. You seem to educate yourself on the what is available. Good job!

Alex, I enjoy your reviews. You bring a pretty level attitude and opinions to them, which I appreciate. Could you show and comment on ingress/egress issues front and back on all reviews? I have 2016, Tacoma, 3.5 V6, auto,access cab, 4 wd, the best fuel.... 26 mpg, my average is 23.7 mpg... Highway and county is 70% of my travel, with 30% city travel... not bad. I like this truck. Thanks for your great reviews Alex excellent delivery and very informative.

Had a 2013 Ram 1500 with the V6 and 8 speed, great gas mileage 22-25 city highway, towed a 24' 5th wheel from Tucson to Mohave Valley and averaged 14.5mpg at 60mph. Mine was a double cab and paid 23.3k plus fees, but now that the truck is popular you'd be lucky to get it for under 29k.

Thanks, Alex. How did the gator skin seats feel while driving? Reminds me of carpet runners my parents had on their gold shag carpets in the 1970s 😝 Man, that stuff was rough and indestructible. Centre console in the Tacoma?? Looks very utilitarian. I do like the exterior styling.

+Vashek Usov Get a used one: I think the wife will like it. My dad has 2005 Tacoma Double Cab and my mom has a 2010 Venza. Both are excellent vehicles that have treated the 'rents well and have sold me on the idea of getting a Toyota myself. Like Alex said, Toyota is discontinuing the Venza. I think 'Yota had enough options in the CUV/SUV levels and the Venza didn't really stand out. I think it's still an excellent vehicle that your wife will enjoy.

Hyundai is missing a great opportunity to enter the US truck market. They could build a truck like the Ford Ranger that rode a bit softer, like the Chevy S-10. ..and they would sell huge numbers. Lots of people out there just need a cheap truck. Ford and GM have no interest in that low profit end of the market.

I recently took out a TRD Sport double cab long box and was surprised with the fuel economy. I drove my local roads with many hills, turns and very rough surfaces for about an hour and 15 minutes. I didn't baby it, I pretty much drove it like I drive my current truck so I had some idea of what I would attain in real life. The truck's on board computer stated 10.3L/100KM (22.8 mpg). I can't get any better than 16L/100 km (14.7 mpg) from my current truck and that's just one reason why I'm downsizing.

Once again Alex NAILS it!!! Seriously Alex you catch everything (even the vibration comment on the old Tacoma's)...just LOVE your reviews! I've personally owned a 2000 Tundra Access Cab; 2005 Tundra Double Cab; 2011 5.7L Tundra Crew Max, and currently we have (my wife's) 2013 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport 4x4 V6 w/TRD CatBack Exhaust... I have enjoyed our 2013 for the most part...the smaller Tacoma handles better...feels more like my 2008 Toyota Highlander did (which I really liked). On our 2013 Tacoma we have also experienced that driveline vibration. I've honestly been very frustrated with Toyota between our 2013 Avalon Hybrid Limited w/Tech (horrid cheap squeaking and rattly interior w/headliner falling down VERY un-Toyota like). Then Toyota's MAJOR problems with their 2.4L Engines Burning Oil issues (so I just auctioned off our "kid use car" 2007 Camry Hybrid and bought a used 2015 Civic EX-L)...and now our 2013 Tacoma Driveline issues...I can hardly wait until Honda comes out with the all new Ridgeline. Unless Honda really screws up the all new Ridgeline...there will be a 2013 Tacoma up For Sale and an ALL Honda lineup will be in our garage after owning 31 cars in my young 47 years. ;-)

+James Wisriko That might be true, James. :-) But I don't think I could ever go back to domestic...even though I realize everything is a mixed bad now days like back to an Isuzu Colorado (flashback Chevy Luv). Here is my domestic truck lineage...I'd owned a (new at the time) '94 Suburban 3/4 Ton w/454 & 4.10 rear end...then when Chevy bought that back after being in the shop 6 months out of the year we had it (and knowing 4 others in town who'd had theirs bought back the same year)...we decided to not get another Burb...and instead bought a Used '92 F-150 w/96K miles and the ole straight Six & 5-Speed Manual (transmission made by Mazda)...that was a contrast..and did OK until TONS of electrical problems at 108K miles...then I bought our new '97 Cummins Dodge (which was awesome). It got 22 MPG unless pulling our boat (where it would get 16 MPG). It did great until the transmission started to go at 33K miles...they fixed it but by then I'd had enough domestics and the 2000 Tundra was out...so probably no Buick's for me. ;-) But a new Honda Ridgeline...that would tempt me...at least for my wide butt. ;-)

+TEKnight Rider I bought into that Isuzu Colorado and I gotta say it was the single worst decision in my car purchasing history. I spent more time underneath it in the driveway than in the driver's seat. I'd like to think Chevy did better with the new Colorado, though. I've always liked the Tacoma (and own the new one) but I wanted to add that the Ridgeline DEFINITELY tempted me. I had a friend whose driveway was through a river **no bridge** and during rainy seasons when his chevy 1500 would bog down on the way to the mailbox, his Ridgeline got him across the riverbed no problem. Friends parked their Rams and Silverados at his gate and he'd come out and pick him up in his Honda. That was shocking for me.

Just to be clear, are you saying you CAN NOT downshift into a lower gear?
@megapixel2004
@megapixel2004 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Esposito I can answer this. You can absolutely downshift. I bought a 2016 Tacoma about 250 miles ago. the 3.5L does deliver some impressive performance above 3k rpm, but coming from an older Tacoma with a 4.0 and a 5 speed, I'm left hurting for the torque. I miss being able to break loose those back tires and hate that I lost that with 3rd gen Tacoma. Without the ability to downshift with the S-mode transmission feature, I'd probably never have even considered the purchase. Let's face it, I hate working a clutch in stop and go. Anyway, it's nice to pop it over into S and downshift when I want to pass or get to the powerband.

Nice truck although the mpg is dissapointing to say the least only 20 combined I like that this is more offroad capable, 9.5'' ground clearence, electronic locking diff, and hill descent mode with the trd package. The only way I would get the GM small truck is if they bring back the ZR2 off road version. They teased us with that back in 2014 with a concept and I wish it would be made.

Good review Alex. However I still went out and purchased the 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4X. It was just more comfortable, has more "Daily Driver" comforts to me and after taking it 4X4ing its an absolute mountain goat. Maybe in the 3 years when I'm ready to try a different mid sized truck Toyota Tacoma will be a little more daily driver friendly. After all, I don't spend all my time off roading even though I wish I could! Keep up the good reviews Alex!

I'll wait until 2017 Tacoma to come out. I hear people complain It constantly up-shifts and then only to down-shift on the slightest incline or any slight acceleration. I can understand it's the 1st 6 speed auto for the Tacoma. I almost pulled the trigger to get this truck, but I'll wait until 2017 and see if the transmission bug has been fixed. I can live with my 2003 4runner for another year or two.

I've only had 2 vehicles with 4 wheel disk. 1 impresses, the other DIDN'T. I feel my Dodge nitro excells in braking particularly when towing. I had an older super duty who's 4 wheel disk felt far less robust then the disk/drum setup in every other truck I'd driven. The 4 wheel disk in an 03 f150 that I've worked on and driven was unremarkable, on par with older disk/drum designs.

@winomaster
@winomaster 8 жыл бұрын
+James Wisrik But don't they eliminate the possibility of anti-lock braking?
@joeracer302
@joeracer302 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert LeBlanc While I agree drum brakes suck to work, don't look cool, and offer less braking capability than some discs, there honestly isn't much need for rear discs on a truck if you aren't towing a lot. The majority of the weight is on the front wheels in a truck, and during braking this is only exasperated. This means there is little traction in the rear for brakes, so probably 70-80% of braking occurs from the front. If you're towing there is more weight on the rear, so the rear brakes can be more aggressive. Since the majority of Tacoma owners don't tow a lot Toyota thought it would be a good way to save $ and focus on improving other areas that matter more to owners. Another reason is drums deal better with being submerged in water, which is not an uncommon occurrence when offroading, and a lot of Tacoma owners love to offroad. I again love disc brakes, but from an engineering standpoint their decision makes sense. It's just a difficult idea to sell to the public.

I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD 4x4 LEMON with 10,500 miles. Starting off on a grade it clicks like a spindle then goes bang bang bang steel crashing together sound. Horrible, whole truck shakes. Anyone out there experience this? Mechanic said its traction control. Now they say its hill assist. TOYOTA WILL NOT WARRANTY> They say its normal operation. Locked up trying to get onto a busy thoroughfare. Had to back into the parking lot I came out of. Scary Scary. I bought this last truck I am a senior. It is a big big mistake. Any advise ? Lemon Law Lawyer here in Oklahoma says I need to get it in 2 more times on the same issue but Since Toyota says its "normal operation" Dealerships wont service it. Big Scam. Now they say contact the attorney general. You want this headache? By the way the Tacoma's wont tow at all at all even at half it's tow rating. Constant struggling shifting out on highway to maintain speeds even when not towing. Just letting you know these Toyota Tacoma's aren't all they are cracked up to be. Also the customer service people are arrogant and rude. Had service lied to me about reproducing the issue no problems found. Service guy lied, Toyota Dealership , Ardmore Oklahome....Kicking myself for trading in my 2014 Chev 4x4...

Alex you covered a lot of bases, very good review but I think you are off on the 0-60 times. The old Tacoma was tied in the 1/4 mile with the GM last year. The GM is 1000-lbs heavier and PUTC did a dyno test on those massive midsizers which are really a full sized truck. The Canyon only gets 228hp to the ground and the 238 hp Tacoma got 197hp that's only 31 more hp out of the GM that makes it to the ground in a heavier vehicle with a flat throttle and poor transmission mapping. I bet this new Tacoma gets more hp to the ground than the GM does. This Tacoma already beats the 1/4 mile times that GM posted last year in another review. Also, that diesel at 4800 more also comes with very slow 1/4 mile times, poor acceleration, pollutes the air with Nox (soot) doesn't heat the cab up in cold climates, costs more to maintain, needs def fluid and stinks your clothes and hands up to high heaven every time you touch those greasy fuel pumps and many fuelling stations don't offer diesel. Just a pain in the ass to own a diesel, only good for commercial buyers and a few select idiots.

The GVWR isn't over 6000 pounds so this isn't considered a 'Commercial Vehicle' so you can't write off the payments for business use. You would be better off with the RAM 1500 Eco Diesel.
@joeracer302
@joeracer302 8 жыл бұрын
+Ivan Vojt Why do so many business use small pickups then? I see the Canyon and Tacoma used frequently in my area. They aren't towing with them, just using them as shop vehicles, but still a work vehicle so you can get a tax break right? I knew a guy who owned his own company and he put a sticker of his company's logo on his Corvette's door and called it his "work vehicle" for tax purposes. How would using a Tacoma be any different? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the tax laws, just looking for more info if you know, thanks :)

I fail to see the value proposition of the Tacoma vs. F-150 or Silverado, particularly considering smaller and less comfortable interior, a mediocre fuel economy, and a lofty price. The requirements for offroadability these days are also greatly exaggerated for 99.9% of the users. Both F-150 and Silverado in 4WD will go just about anywhere short of crazy trails, and have done so since inception.

+mountainhobo I think you'd have to be smoking banana peels to pick the Taco over any of the other trucks. The only thing it really has going for it is resale value, and if you are buying a car just so you can resell it, you are an idiot and you probably should just take public transportation.

+mountainhobo I just ordered a 2016 Tacoma Double Cab Short Box TRD Sport V6 4x4 6M with the upgrade package, MSRP with freight (not what I paid) is $39,825 CAD. A comparably equipped F-150 (crew cab, short box, 4x4, body colored trim, navigation, heated seats, dual climate control, sunroof, sliding rear window, heated mirrors, tow package, bed liner, blind spot monitoring) has an MSRP of $56,800 CAD plus I'm stuck with an automatic transmission - which I hate. Factoring in available discounts (say $2K on the Taco and $10K on the Ford), the delta is still $8975 plus tax (13% here) and interest. The value proposition is very clear to me.

+mountainhobo Comparably equipped full size costs ~$15k more, and some people like having something that is smaller and easier to maneuver around town. You already mentioned the resale (Tacoma highest of all vehicles) and off road capability. The resale value is because of the reliability and low maintenance costs. Some people are willing to take the hit on gas mileage for lower maintenance/repair costs.  Personally, an F150 won't fit in my garage, and I like having a truck that can fit in parking spots easily. I know there are other vehicles with AWD that are smaller, something like a Rav4 (my wife has one), but I like the pickup bed and off road capability of the Tacoma. For me the selling point was the reliability though. My wife has owned the Rav4 since new in 1998, and I've also owned a Camry since 2009. I've owned a lot of other "fun" cars, but for my daily driver I like to buy something and keep it for a long time that I don't have to fuck with and I know can go 200k+ miles no problem. I'll drive them till the wheels fall off, but turn wrenches on my project car during the weekend :) The Tacoma has juuuusst enough tow capability to tow my project car if needed, but I have always just paid $50 to have it towed vs. buying/renting a trailer, so I really don't worry about towing ... so yea, I hope this helps explains why someone would go in and order a Tacoma over a fullsize like I have :)

James Wisrik Ford trucks are assembled in the US, but most of the parts (drivetrain, etc.) are manufactured in Mexico. I guess Mexico is still part of America, just not the US :) This is true of most auto companies. Final assembly is done in the US to avoid import tariffs (although there are trade treaties that allow some concession when "importing" from Mexico or Canada), but the parts are manufactured somewhere else ... The design, development, testing, etc., is still done in the US, but the vehicles aren't as "American" as people want to think. A lot of $ is still going overseas to pay non-Americans to manufacture ... Toyota trucks are also assembled in the US, and they do development and testing here in the US also. By a lot of metrics this makes their trucks as American as US manufacturers ...

The thing that occurs to me about both the Toyota & Nissen pickups is that they do not appear to be making much of an effort to be competitive in the lucrative US truck market. They seem to be sending us just their product that they sell to third-world countries. These are by necessity very rugged to handle the rugged conditions in the third world. Lots of the areas over their are "off-road". As a result we are getting trucks that don't meet US standards of headroom and seats elevation. Nor do they style these trucks to appeal to the US buyers. The exteriors are not too bad, but the interior design is essentially cartoonish. You would never see such indifference to western design in a Honda, for instance. When you consider how profitable the US market can be, it seems absurd how little effort is going into designing for US buyers. Toyota, for one, is essentially just a niche play. They are investing nothing in providing specific product for the US. The content themselves with taking a slice of the US market solely of the basis of their extraordinary ruggedness. It makes me think they have made a political decision not to threaten the US automakers sole source of profits...feeling that the move would bring out protectionist sentiment. (In the US, GM, Ford $ Chrysler make most of their profits on trucks.

I'm not one of those people that hate on the Ridgeline for being a FWD based unibody pickup, I think it does what it was designed to do quite well, but it is certainly indifferent to Western design.

+ast5515 I gotta say when I saw those figures I was shocked. I didn't know there were still 4 cylinders turning out figures that low these days, much less in a nearly 4k lb truck. I guess if you look at the older vehicles it doesn't seem SO bad. Chevy's 4.3 V6 generated about 165 horsepower back in the 90s. But that was for a much lighter truck and it had a LOTTTT more torque.

Alex what speeds are these trucks limited to in 4x4. After a certain speed you cant do the switch from 2wd to 4x4 and my 2015 Tacoma is limited to how fast it can go in 4x4, what a piece of shit system. Is the Colorado built the same way. Also the Canyon has some type of awd system and what is its limitations if any. I would have bought the Canyon over my 2015 Tacoma but hated the throttle response and hated the low front bumper, and it is harder to park and the TRD suspension with the bilstein shocks in the Tacoma handles the shit roads I live on like its riding on cotton in comparison. The Canyon just bottomed out on a lot of the bigger woops and potholes.

I really don't like this interior. Toyota has so many resources at it's disposal with Lexus that this interior should be much, much better. That midsection on the dash is very busy but more so, it looks old. There are times when I feel like I'm looking at an eighties era Toyota.

+Scott F. Well one things for sure, it isn't for everybody. I'm 6' tall and I think if I were any taller (or even wider, and I'm pretty slim) would put me looking at a full size. I have the TRD Off Road and like the interior a lot better than the Limited that's in this vid. I definitely agree with you that Toyota could have done better. Unfortunately, I have to admit I'm a fan-boy because of the resale value and reliability. That bias has probably blinded me to the new generation's flaws. Being unbiased probably puts you in a better buying position!

+Scott F. As consumers, we all have different expectations, but I feel like the interior is just fine. It's modern enough so you can use your phone to play music, dual climate control, and a few other neat features for the modern era, but simple enough that it wont distract you from the road. After all, for me at least, i don't get a truck for the luxuries. I get it for the capabilities on the road. But that's just me.
@scottfurlong5475

+Yogangster1995 I hear ya loud and clear. It's a very capable and popular truck, the sales numbers tell that story. I guess I'm one of those guys who are on the other end of the spectrum. I need a truck to do the day to day family stuff with the kids when my wife has the van. I'd like to put gear, tools and lumber in the back without worrying about the interior or folding down seats. I'm so used to all the creature comforts of the mini van that I tend to look at what the interior has to offer me rather than how capable the truck is. I'm using the old van as a makeshift truck because I can't use my work truck for personal use. I remove the seats when I need to carry gear, I install the seats when I need to carry kids and I mix them up sometimes. I have gone to get kids with no seats in the van. My situation sucks and so I need a truck.

You really can't compare a canyon or colorado to the tacoma. Resale value alone blows the competition out of the water. The tacoma will depreciate much slower. And anything made by FCA (RAM) will drop like a rock. Unless the price is insanely cheaper you can't buy a Chevrolet or FCA product over a Tacoma or you will be flushing your money down the toilet over the next few years. I highly doubt the difference in performance or anything else between the trucks could be significant enough to buy the other garbage American brands.
