I traded in my Buick Verano for the TRD Sport last year and it's been a fantastic truck. Amazing cargo management (I improved it further with a header bar in the box, though I do question why it isn't stock on the truck when it's a Toyota part). It's much faster than I expected (all the videos show it being the slowest mid-sized, but it really doesn't feel like it to me). Easily the best looking mid-sized on the inside & out for me. For the oddball tasks where I need a truck, this is the perfect truck for me. Plus, since mine has the tech package, the wireless charging station has been amazing. Only issues I have are honestly minor things. No power seats are a bummer. The volume/track button on the steering wheel comes off as being backwards to me (why is the volume adjustments left & right? I've had the thing for almost a year and it still feels like the wrong layout to me). The speakers are shite. The lack of an remote start feels so wrong, especially when Toyota has one with a good range, but limited to I think half their vehicles (I hated going out in -40°C, especially at work. Finally got a 3rd party remote start installed though).

I really wish Toyota would improve the seat height in the Tacoma. When I drive a truck I like to sit up high, not flat on the floor like a car or some SUVs. The seats are really the one major problem I have with the Tacoma, otherwise I think its a great mid size truck.

You should compare this to your 2004 Tacoma! I can't find any reviews for the old first gens anywhere online. I myself have a 2004 double cab 4x4 and love it to death! I like these new ones too, but could never trade my trusty old 04 in on one no matter how bad I want to.

I noticed comments about the seating/room the front. Are the seats close to "the floor" and you feel like it sits low? I feel the GMC Canyon has more interior volume and sits higher.

I love this truck I've been waiting for a review from you guys. I don't think Toyota innovated with this truck but they got everything just right in my taste. I was hoping for more hp and torque but I still think the trd off road Tacoma will still perform better than the All terrain canyon or colorado. With Toyota you know your getting a good truck when you walk out of the dealer with one.

it's not the same engine although it has the same number. Toyota has redesigned their 3.5 liter engine just like what Honda and Nissan did.

Geo Von Lengerke well that might be true. Because they probably change all the models that had thr original 3.5 with 268hp. I read some wear they were going up the 3.5 v6 to 288 hp.

Promising upgrades, but one question. I owned a 2009 Tacoma TRD Sport V6, which was supercharged. Awesome truck, with more power, and was definitely fun. The only issue I had was the "open differential" where the back passenger wheel was spinning. For an off-road truck, a limited slip differential should be standard. Same with the 2013 Tundra I traded the tacoma in for.

Just test-drove a 2016 extra-cab TRD Off Road. I own a 2012 DBL cab TRD Sport. 2016 VERY MUCH quieter inside cabin. Seat position a little higher not the same as reviewer says. Transmission shifting very nice. Head room (I'm 6'1")same as 2012. Bought the LTD! Ha! Gonna be digging the moon-roof.

where are you at GM?! this is how you build a truck. not a fluff box like the Colorado! the trd off road spanks that z71 all over the place.. those approach angles on the tacoma are impressive in comparison. honestly, toyota knows how to build a proper truck. what a grand successor to the 2nd gen. although, not sols on that massive grille yet lol

I already got a Colorado, very happy with it. It drives so much better and has much more leg and head space (im 6'6") than the tacoma.

+Rod Adelantar There is a very low likelihood of this Tacoma being as reliable as the old ones. As for resale value and reliability, the old Colorado has a very high resale value and it is just as hard to find one with low miles as a used Tacoma. The mid sized American trucks are pretty common to see still driving on the road.

If you need the diesel torque to tow adequately you'd probably do better with a full size that costs less than a midsize diesel if you catch it on sale. It's not just pulling power, , it's stopping and controlling lateral motion that matters.

I am seriously considering a 2016 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road Package; as this will be my first non-full size truck, I am conflicted about whether to get the long or short box. I like the increased break over angle, decreased turning radius, and off-roadablilty of the short box, but I could use and like the (approximately) 12" bigger box and looks of the long box. I realize there is no correct answer and everything is a compromise. I will mainly use the truck for hunting, canoe/kayak trips as well as pulling a utility trailer and 16' boat. I spend a lot of time pounding around on gravel forest roads and dirt two tracks, but no hardcore rock stuff or technical off roading as in these Toyota demo videos. HELP!

I sincerely hope they put stiffer leaf springs in the back. My Tacoma would squat real bad even under light loads. Heck I used to have a single axle trailer and although it towed flawlessly it hit the bum stop constantly. Wouldn't own a mid sized truck anymore because they feel weird when towing my 18 foot trailer.

I recently bought a tacoma limited edition 4x4 short bed and haven't seen any reviews of the limited capabilities on and off road..I mean, the limited cost more then the TRD so it should be more truck then the TRD?? I mean it also doesn't have crawl control so why are they more expensive disregard of the leather non electric seats?? Does the limited perform well ?? Is it a tough off road truck?? The payload capacity is wrong, that's for the 2WD base. The loaded down TRD/Double cab versions have a max payload of around 1100.

Great looking truck. I am still surprised that fuel economy number did not increase significantly. Tacoma is only 21-24 mpg and its a compact truck. Ford F150 19 city 26 hwy. Dodge Ram 21 city 29 hwy. I like that its more nimble than a full size truck, but it still missed the mark. The fact that full size trucks are still getting better gas mileage is pathetic. I hope Honda new Ridgeline will make a good pickup with great gas mileage compliments of a hybrid engine (30 city 35-40 highway).

I went to a local dealer and drove one. I currently own a 2006 Tacoma that I have driven over 100,000 miles. I've loaded it, and towed a car trailer with some heavy cars on it from Southern California to Florida and back. I took the 2016 about 3 blocks and turned around and went back to the dealer. I found it to have less power, mainly on the bottom end. The big reason I turned around were the brakes. They SUCK... they Still SUCK. I've changed my 2006 some time ago to aftermarket brakes with Power Stop on the front, and disk brakes on the rear. Why with all of the great improvements Toyota still provides drums on the rear and marginal calipers on the front is beyond me. So for me, I'll take safety and keep my 2006 Tacoma. You had the chance Toyota... you blew it!

Actually glad they took a modest approach to hp/tq, and focused more on refinement because that's really what the 2nd Gen lacked. Why did they put drum brakes on the rear, they are not as heat efficient or as effective in water conditions. Plus more of a pain to replace and adjust along with not as astesticlly pleasing. I get that they only account for like 30% braking power and they are cheaper to replace but this is the 3rd Generation. The excuse of we did it because it blocks debris. Anyone who has had this issue and I know some who have just needed a slight lift.
