I became a DJ fan - oddly - during and after his personal, potential substance abuse issues, and self-imposed hiatus. I had JUST read an article by a British writer who, basically, asked "what is wrong with Dustin Johnson?" I read the entire article, which pointed out his many accomplishments, including having won at least one tournament in every season of his professional career. I hadn't really paid much attention to him before that, but it made me start to watch him, because the writer outlined what a superior physical athlete he was, and even went so far as to ask "Is being 30 and a millionaire his only goal? Is that why he hasn't become one of the greats? (paraphrasing)". It was only a few weeks later that DJ took his hiatus, and I know there are critics who will say mean and terrible things - I don't care. The measure of a man isn't his faults, but how he overcomes them. When I read later on that Wayne Gretzky basically showed up at DJ's house and challenged him "do you want to be good, or do you want to be great?", and then became his personal trainer right up until his return, I knew this was a special moment for a special athlete, being coached by the GREATEST hockey player of all time (props to Gordie). Until then, I feel that DJ was just another gifted athlete who only wanted to work hard enough to afford his lifestyle. Since then, he has been one of the most consistent athletes on the planet! What a difference focus can make in an athlete's life. He isn't going to set any records for Majors won, or overall wins, but - at 20 PGA wins, and 1 Major - he is pretty much a lock for HOF, and he is going to win many more tournaments to come.

If I was in Dustin's position and lost the tournament because of a false penalty, I would be suing the USGA for money lost, the vistory, anf to protect the proper use of the rules of the game. Dustin's redemption, no thanks to the USGA. You guys completely ruined the moment with your inability to interpret your own convoluted rule book. You called Johnson and Westwood liars and overruled your own officials to make a wrong ruling. The best players in the world are terrorized by the rule book. They can't even make a simple drop without calling in an official. How do you expect an average golfer to follow the rules. Nobody really understands them, not even you guys. How about this rule? If the player doesn't actually cause the ball to move, he isn't penalized.

Blake Murray Before the address position he grounded his putter during the practice strokes session. That counts because he was near the ball, and the question is whether or not his actions caused the ball to move. I still think USGA were wrong in their decision though.

Okay, so I'm no expert in golf rules, so I want to clarify that whole penalty thing. As I interpret it, the officials seem to be saying that when Dustin grounded his club, prior to actually addressing the ball, the force of the putter on the green surface close to the ball was sufficient to deform the surface just enough to cause the ball to move slightly once he'd moved his putter and the surface resettled a tiny bit. Given that there was not sufficient wind or any other factor that could cause the ball to move, they had to penalise him. Am I wrong? Everyone is pointing out that he didn't ground the club when he came to actually address the ball, but he definitely did ground the ball prior to that. Does that not count as grounding the ball? Genuine question, I don't know. But you're not allowed to ground your club in a hazard, right? And that doesn't just mean when you're actually addressing the ball, it means when you're taking practice swings etc, right? Here's a quote I found: "Decision 18-2a/30 Question: A player took several practice swings about one foot from his ball which was lying in light rough, and his club came in contact with the ground. He then took his stance, touched grass behind the ball with the clubhead but did not ground the club. At that point the ball moved. The player claimed that no penalty was incurred because he had not addressed the ball. However, the Committee judged that the practice swings and the touching of the grass behind the ball caused the ball to move, and therefore the player incurred a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2a. Was the Committee correct? Answer: It is a question of fact whether the player caused his ball to move and thus incurred a penalty under Rule 18-2a. Because of the practice swings and touching of the grass, the weight of evidence is against the player and therefore the Committee's decision was correct. (Revised)" Obviously this is quite a different circumstance, but it does seem to lend weight to the notion that a player can be penalised for causing a ball to move without ground his club behind the ball. Anyway, like I say, I'm no expert, but I would say that everyone who is so sure they're right that it wasn't a penalty should be a bit more circumspect. I saw some comments arguing that while Dustin hadn't grounded his club (putter) he had addressed the ball. I disagree. He was in the process of moving his putter behind the ball when you could tell he noticed the ball was starting to move and quickly moved his putter out of the way. Addressing the ball is when when the club is is a customary position when ready to make a stroke (rule that was updated in 2012 and supposedly used in determining if Dustin broke the rule below). "If the golf club is grounded “closely” behind the ball in a position where it would be customary for a player to ground the club prior to making a particular stroke, then the club is considered to have been grounded immediately behind the ball". Dustin's club was not in a position where it would be customary for a player to ground the club prior to making a particular stroke. I think the USGA took the coward's way out and gave him the penalty stroke because they knew it wouldn't affect the outcome of the tournament.

Watching these guys on tv doesn’t do the bunkers justice, played there a couple times, if you hit in a fairway bunkers it’s an automatic 1 shot penalty unless you get super lucky and are in the very back of the bunker, absolute war zone playing there

Whether or not the penalty was justified (and I don't think it was) you can't have that hanging over a player's head for the remainder of the round, that would be inexcusable at any tournament let alone the US Open. If someone had ended up making a playoff (or worse, winning by a shot) because a penalty was called after the round, can you imagine the outcry? People would revolt against the USGA is mass and they'd be 100% entitled to. But in the end the right man won, after the losses he's had in the past he deserves a couple more as well.

I don't think the us Open is the hardest to win because it often favours the long hitters. The True test ist THE OPEN on a Links course. You have to have full control over your irons, putter and maybe your woods. Us Open is more like driver and a 8 Iron or wedge, that is scummy in my opinion

Like at Shinnecock Hills? The Open Championship and the US Open are the best majors, different in their own way but the best. Carnoustie played easier this year as we've had the hottest,driest summer since 1976 in the UK. The wind only got up to around 22mph for a few hours on Sunday.
