I actually love that it has an analog tach. Too many newer bikes are going all digital.

Nice review. :-) I have done 16.000 km on my 2015 R3 so far. Amazing and comfortable bike. About the sound I hurried to buy a akroprovic slip-on and it sounds so much better now. Topspeed is 185 km/h (GPS) on the highway. The bike is great for touring, I have been on several trips with over 1.000 km in a day, and I am still not sore in the butt from sitting on it. I would more call it a sporttouring than a sportsbike. :-) It's a fast and also very forgiving bike, perfect for starters but also perfect for experienced people. But now I am saving up for a more adventure bike now to switch it with in a years time now, maybe. :-) Amazing bike tho. Oh and it is not EURO4, which is why is has been discontinued for 2017, and the next 'new' R3's will first be ready for 2018 (so the dealer told me). So they are selling all the 2015 and 2016's models this year - and from what I have been told then they have a lot of them. :P

Hey MissendenFlyer, Not sure if you still read these old comments, just commenting to say - small world! This was my Yamaha R3 I picked up in 2018, was a lovely bike to ride, did plenty of journeys and snapped some fantastic pictures with it! I bought one of these as my first bike about 9 months ago and I'm loving it. I paid $6000 here in Australia which I though was an an absolute steal for a brand new bike. Just put on a tail tidy and an Akrapovic slip on to make it look and sound better. Great little bike for someone getting into motorcycling.

I've had my 2016 Matte Gray R3 about a year now and I agree, it's great for what it is. I took about 20 years off from riding and wanted something fun and forgiving when I got back into it again. The R3 fit the bill nicely for me. Great for my 100 mile round trip commutes and so much fun on curvy back country roads. I wish the brakes and tires were a little better but they're nothing that can't be upgraded and understood based on the price of the bike. The bike has been a lot of fun to mod as well. So many little things to make it unique and your own. I'll probably ride it for one more year before selling her off to the next guy who has similar needs to mine when I bought it and trading up to something a little different.

A lot to be said for having a bike like this for the everyday commute - enough power, nimble and light for filtering in heavy traffic, and not a gas guzzler. I have a cbr300f for precisely these reasons (live in Bangkok and, well, you've probably heard about the traffic woes here). I just find it a bit like hard work on the longer trips, especially seat comfort, so I guess that's where a bigger, touring focused bike comes into the reckoning. Anyways, thanks for the upload. Ever thought of doing a Thailand tour? It's an amazing country and the bird-watching is awesome!

I think this is one of the best bikes on sale today, just such a lovely little all-rounder and fantastic for b-roads trashing. Also comfy enough for touring and great for a commute. People in general just buy way too big bikes, maybe it's some kind of macho insecurity thing. Sure, a 300-400cc bike is not going to give you much in the way of pub bragging rights but if you're into motorcycling to actually ride the things you don't need much more that this.

Nice review as always TMF. I'm thinking about one of these as a little play thing. Just sold my Street Triple R 2012 for a 17 plate CB500X for the everyday commute and light touring. The CRF250L seems a bit redundant now as my CB500X does most of what I bought the CRF250L for (I was never going to use it off-road). So the Yam fits nicely for something nippy and revvy to give a nice blend of everyday riding fun while ticking 90% of the biking I'd do.

I’m looking to get back into riding after not owning a bike for about ten years. There is so many great choices nowadays that I’m finding it hard to choose between the low cc bikes that one can buy. R3 is great little super bike, ninja 400 great value, and 2017 ninja 300 with 0 miles on them are super cheap where I live. Ninja300 holds 17 litres and is 4000cdn $. The 400 is awesome but the 650 is bigger and more comfortable and I might go for that in the future after getting my full licence back. I’m looking for a bike for me at uni that’s cheap to buy, insure and run, but don’t want a 125 since I would need to get up to motorway speeds for a couple hours Is this much cheaper than other comparable 600cc bikes. Because I have found r6s second hand for 3.5. What gear and throttle range does the bike need to be at to go at motorway speeds? My only problems with this bike is that I don’t like the front from the side, not a massive dislike but I prefer a 2006 r6 front, and I’m not a fan of those skinny wheels
@rich4896
@rich4896 6 жыл бұрын
Ryan M. Get a more comfortable bike with a bigger engine. Upright riding position for town and motorway riding and the bigger engine will be fine with motorway speeds. With an R3, you’ll be in 6th gear at high revs. You don’t want that for a long time

The CBR500R would be a decent first bike, and comes out ahead of the R3 if you take into account highway riding; it would be less stressful with the bigger engine, though you're also adding about 50lbs of weight. I don't know about Texas. but here in KY you can fine the Honda for under $4k pretty easily (there are 5 on Craigslist as I write this), which is about the same as a used R3.

MF well done for adding another "real bike' to your reviews. I love your reviews of the 100hp+ plus monsters, but plenty of people just ride something like this, or slightly bigger because they are cheap and practical for commuting. You seem to have a good relationship with your KTM dealer in Hemel, any chance you could test the 2017 Duke 390? This would give you a good comparison against the R3 or MT03. I confess I have a vested interest since these are both on my list for my next bike (restricted as I am by Singaporean law to a whopping 400cc for at least another year). The 400cc class is super popular in Asia, the roads are just too busy and in some cases undeveloped, to bother with a bigger capacity bike. Your point about having enough torque for the "real world" is a good one. Up to about 50kmph, even a 200 cc bike out drags most cars. Quickly runs out of puff after that but its enough to get you away at the lights and into clear road, which is all you need.

the r3 is nice bike well constructed with a good dash, for a sports bike it is great. but i chose the CBR 500r having test rode both there is less of a sports bike feet position on the honda but those couple of extra horse power and i think better range between fill ups makes it the better sports bike in the A2 range. the lightness of the r3 is awesome and in the new street triple league. another great video and thanks for trying out these other bikes.

I love your reviews, you're my go to place for motorcycle info. But please, please stop speeding in 30s...It's one of the places where limits make a massive difference and save lives due to the number of people around. If you want to speed on the open road you're mostly risking your own backside... But in a 30 it's much higher risk to those that live there and not fair at all.
