OneNote is in non-linear format , unlike Word and the others. That instantly puts it in it's own little heaven. It does have various Word and Excel functions incorporated into it to some degree. It's an experience that is amazingly FUN or can be extremely useful for organizing virtually anything.

I use it as almost my main program (Office 365) on my pc. Just a great dumping ground for almost anything, plus all very sortable and organized if you want. OneNote Web Clipper is a must; sends anything off the net instantly to ON, including Outlook emails (articles etc.). OneNote is handy to have, extremely useful, and fun to play with as well.

I have the MS Surface Book. Two questions: 1. Can I have two OneNote notes open side by side on my screen? and 2. Not sure I understand your first question. Second question..... drag the note container from one page to the other, or do a standard copy/cut and paste.

You can't put sections inside sections, per se, but you can create a section group that contains sections. Right-click any section tab and select "New Section Group"

Hi Scott, thanks for the video and information. I would like to ask you about something. I used to produce videos using the Stylus pen and screen capturing software. Powerpoint is great as I can hide my points and show them one by one, but the pen tool and functionality is so weak and unfriendly. I switched to OneNote as they have nice pen toolbar and options. However, all the points will be on screen and no way to show them one by one as in PowerPoint. My question, how I can have nice pen toolbar and to show my points one at a time either in OneNote, PowerPoint, or any other software? thanks and regards

You can't delete a notebook from within OneNote. You have to go to the directory where you store your OneNote notebooks and delete the entire folder that has the same name as your notebook.

I am new to One Note, Office 365 Personal subscription, and cloud computing in general. I cut my teeth on DOS, so structure was paramount. I am confused because One Note on my android phone and tablet don't look or behave the same: on my tablet those gray 'containers' are evident - but not on my phone; on my phone there are sticky notes - but they aren't on my tablet. I am spending too much time copying from one place to another to get consistency. Is it me or are there differences across hardware types?

Im new to this application and am being "encouraged" to use this with our new math curriculum. I have a question. if I wanted to create a tab for quizzes/tests and have students do the test using this application, is there a way to place a time limit on the specific page so that students can only do the test during class time and not at home? Then, is there a way to then hide the test from them with a password so that I can always see their tests but they cant just pull them up to share their tests with students who maybe havent taken the test yet? I dont want the test to disappear because I want to be able to use it for data collection or to show growth, show to parents or revisit if students want to make corrections. I just want to limit their independent access time or ability to share with peers, change answers, and so forth.... Thoughts??

I was told by Microsoft that the Onenote version that comes with Windows 10 is different that Onenote 2016 that comes with Office 365 that you download from Microsoft. The 2016 version has a different logo. The 2016 version has a purple N in a white box. The Windows 10 version has a white N inside a purple box and they look different. Your video is showing the Windows 10 version. When I signed up for Office 365 the Onenote version for the PC has the purple N inside a white box and it looks different. Are the any differences between the 2 versions?

I started using the program and I love it, but I'm curious what will happen if I lose my internet connection. I want to use it on my classes, where I don't have the connection all the time. Will it save the data on my laptop and then syc with OneDrive when it'll reach the connection? Can I use it without internet at all?

Yes, if you lose your connection, OneNote will wait until the connection is restored to sync. This also means you can work offline and sync later.

I am using this from past 2 years and I wonder how no one in my organisation is not using it or talking about it. Pen, notepads and post it are still their best friends (I like post it though). Admittedly I'm only looking for a robust, but offline, journaling program...but it seems to me that OneNote is missing a calendar view that is a natural viewing mindset for working adults who do any work with a Windows operating system. All day long, I operate from Outlook and it's calendar for meetings, appointments, reminders, etc.My current journal, is an app on my phone. It simply takes me too long to type (or voice and then spend probably more time correcting Siri's mistakes). I don't really want a blog...or I should say that I'm not interested in having a blog that's online (viewable or not). OneNote seems so close, but I think, and many times search, in terms of dates. "What was I thinking about last month?" Granted, I can search for the idea, and see when it was I thought of that idea easily enough...I just like the option of having a calendar view. Even for Students or workers...wouldn't they want to be able to search through notes two weeks ago (or what the meeting was about two weeks ago) easily without having to know exactly what was written to be able to search for it.There's a program called The Journal...it seems to do exactly that, but at a proce of $80. It might just be worth that to me. Still...OneNote seems to easily handle anything else I wanted...so I may just have to retrain myself how to sift through things for old journal entries.But if anyone knows how to add a calendar view to OneNote, similar to the calendar on the right hand side of Outlook, please let me know!

Does anyone know how to tell which Onenote you might have on your computer/tablet? I seem to have 3; one has the darker purple cover, another a white cover, the third has a scissor showing. What are the differences between them? Also, the app version that downloads to a Kindle, what version is that & how compatible is it with the other 2. The icons you're describing are all the same OneNote. That's a "quick access" app that OneNote adds to Windows to get to different functionality quickly.

When I open them they have different appearances, one has the tabs on top, the other on the side. Additionally the desktop icons are different, one has the white N on a purple background & the other a purple N on a white background. The items on top are also different

The one in this video is the actual OneNote 2016 full desktop version. Personally, that's what I'm a fan of. For you, I would say go with whichever version you are more comfortable with.

Does One Note sync with GMAIL? I have used Outlook quite some time ago and unfortunately when I changed from one platform of Windows to another I lost all of my Contact Files and Outlook History and after many, many fruitless attempts to retrieve the material I went with Firefox and having no real luck with that I finally came across Gmail and have been using it for quite some time now. Again can I sync with Gmail.com?

Hi Udo, the Send to OneNote printer driver referred to by Stefan Wischner indeed creates image printouts. OneNote has no native PDF viewer. You can host a PDF on Docs.com and use Sway as a vehicle to display an embedded PDF. OneNote add-in Gem for OneNote also offers a PDF-viewing solution.
