IMPORTANT: At 22:40 & 23:08 I mention Kevyn Aucoin products, in one I have listed Cruelty Free, I didn’t add the bullet point yet because I found conflicting information online, so I emailed the brand to ask them directly. I completely forgot, I should have erased it until I was sure. I will let you know as soon as I hear back. I am not 100% on that one. Sorry about the sound in the second half of the video. I know its annoying. As you can tell from the first part, I now have my microphone back. Back to normal after this video. Thanks for your patience. And again, I just want to reiterate, I am NOT making excuses for brands. The only reason I am explaining is because I have received a lot of messages, Tweets etc. Some people saying they feel like they don’t count, or matter etc. I completely understand. I just wanted to explain the thought process so some people don’t feel bad. I understand it will still happen, you are free to feel however you do. I do think things are changing though. Tarte, although not alone in this, has been made an example of. Change is in the air.

I can't stop looking at your hair ..it looks so healthy and smooth and golden. I'm obsessed. Also I very highly respect you and your work.. I'm allergic to citrus contained products ( not citric acid but things like citronella, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol) you're the only person who goes into detail about how certain products contain irritating things in it or things that make it non vegan ( a full breakdown ..thank you for that by the way )..do you think when you break down products you could mention if they have citrus in it too ? It's hard to mainly find setting spray, hair products, and facial care products that don't contain any ...I'm willing to trust you and spend the money on higher end things if you think they will be good ..I just really can't find any that are highly rated that also leave of citrus. Please help. If not I 100 percent understand. Love ya girl !

As a poc I really appreciate your comments about the tarte outrage. While it's definitely a problem, a lot of the bashing from white influencers feels very performative and like they're jumping on the bandwagon because everyone is talking about it and so it's easy for them to do so and get brownie points for it. It's a problem across the industry and doesn't start or end with one brand. And honestly, the extent of calling out racism in the industry (or in general) shouldn't be simply addressing bad shade ranges. For example, people who supported or were mute about J* and yet are acting outraged about one foundation's shade range? Seems like bullshit to me. I always appreciate your authenticity and genuine support of people of color and willingness to learn and speak out. Love you!

XshamosasX I honestly felt the same way. I wanna hope that some of those people are being advocates and want to be supportive of more inclusiveness and that it's not just mentioning it and filming an outrage video for the views and because everybody else is doing it because that's just shameful.

I have never said this before to a KZbinr, considering the fact that I don’t know you personally, but I LOVE YOU. I’ve been subscribed to you for about a year (maybe more) and I’ve always lived for your in-depth, unbiased and research based reviews. THIS video though!! Honey!! You literally spoke all of my thoughts. I spend so much time researching the ins and out of how makeup companies work and how they come up with shade ranges. You did amazing by looking at it from all spectrums of the debate (business, consumer, POC, nonPOC, influencer, and even retailers) thank you for not just going on about the crappiness of the shade range just for views, knowing that in 2 weeks you won’t care since it doesn’t directly affect you. I appreciate everything you do and I respect how bold you are!

I do love that you use facts. You take the time to do research and educate yourself then pass that along to others. It does stink that many brands don’t include very fair and very deep shades. We as consumers need to support the brands that have a better variety.

I don’t like that you feel as though you are being selfish or apart of the problem for recommending products that work for you. You can’t help that these companies don’t offer more shades and include more people but that doesn’t mean you can’t review, suggest or recommend the product for those who do look like you. Those people still deserve to get your advice and find products they want. I appreciate that you do your best to find and review as many products as you can that are inclusive, that’s what we need. You use your platform to make people aware of what’s going wrong around us and your intentions are good from what I can see and that’s what matters.

Steph you are fantastic! As a black woman I'm obviously pleased as far as makeup goes, but in a greater context I think it's so so important that intelligent people like you just admit to their mistakes; it doesn't even have to be an apology in the end, for me hearing the person articulate what THEY think was wrong about what they did has much more value! Apologies can be so empty. In the entire racism clusterf* I deal with daily I desperately need these little glimpses of light; seeing that there are white people who can put down their ego and realize life is always about making mistakes and processing them- it's called learning stuff and growing up. People need to stop wallowing in shame and self pity instead of admitting how they've been complicit in the oppression of people of color. It's not about YOU just because you feel unsettled by your reality being challenged. It's about racism, the entire system of it, and it's gonna require a lot more people to lay down their entitled, spoiled egos (yeah, I'm not that optimistic recently...) But to you specifically Steph- please don't ever stop doing what you're doing. It can mean so much to just see one voice advocating for my equality.

Steph, no. You're not wrong. It's not selfish to use a color that suits you. Ripley says she has one color that's a perfect match. I get the frustration of not finding 12 that match perfectly, but she wouldn't stop using it if it didn't carry a million other colors or under tones. I thought the hate you got was so stupid, you try hard. You said it on Instagram. You can't do it all. Don't let hate and criticism get you down. You do a great job looking for inclusive products. People like to complain. They're just trying to look good by being jerks. Thank you for this, and for standing up for yourself. I completely agree.

RavenC1357 You didn't miss the point, and I completely agree. Brands cater to those that are their largest consumers. Good, or bad, those are the facts. I'm in my forties, and in the last year I finally found my perfect foundation match, in shade and undertone. People forget that it's not just deep skintones that aren't always catered to. Very fair skin tones, and those with less common undertones, struggle to find matches as well. It's not the responsibility of KZbinr's to only recommend products SJW'S find inclusive to all. Would that be nice? Of couse, but in business it isn't feasible, or realistic. I watch Stephanie because of her honesty, and we are similar skintones. I trust, and appreciate her recommendations. She shouldn't apologize for doing her job, and doing it well.

Thank you so much for your honest opinion on the situation. I completely understand the “business logic” behind the tarte shade range, but a huge problem that I have was the comment they gave popsugar. They said that “people are lighter in winter and darker in summer.” That’s acting like brown people don’t exist. As if the only reason they are extending their shade range is because white people get a tan, instead of to cater to everyone. That was the nail in the coffin for me.

Im fair! They didnt have a shade for me! In the summer, i burn, peel and turn into a pale skinned person again. Unfortunately, they werent thinking of the pale people who dont tan AT ALL! Its unfortunate and its definitely something that they should fix, but being the pale girl i am, i feel like we were just left out completely. Stef was the first one to actually have a voice for us pale skin girls as well! Theres alot of people suffering from this and i know it sucks, but hopefully at the end of the day, someone understands and starts thinking of us pale women, as well as the darker women. We got a raw deal:(

While I understand what you are saying about shade range being a financial decision.....the biggest mistakes Tarte made came AFTER the launch. Remarks about how people are more pale in the winter so that is why they came out with the pale shades now and will have darker shades in summer are fucking ridiculous. Black people are still black in winter. Turning off comments on Instagram and their response to the entire thing is the problem. Their response is what told everyone that they don't care about people of color.

Hey Steph! So in response to the Tarte ordeal, so what really sealed the deal for me about this issue was when they were deleting comments from consumers, then they disabled their comments altogether and finally, the attempt to insult our intelligence by saying “that our shade lightens in the winter and darkens in the summer”. I’m the same skintone all year round. It took an abundance of backlash before they offered a sincere statement. The series of events from Tarte to address this situation was shady and its indicative to how they view people of color. Nonetheless the theory of them being ignorant went out the window for me. YSL and Guerlain might be ignorant but Tarte is racist.

Brittany de Brentani Same! i'm pretty fair but I have an olive/slightly yellow undertone and those foundations basically don't exist. Every time I go to get shade matched anywhere they're always pushing a pink foundation on me. Companies really need to work on shade range expansion AND undertone expansion. Like Stephanie said, if you're pushing out a huge range of foundations but the undertones are wrong, what's the point?

I also feel like an important part of having the shade range is to also include those ranges in ad campaigns, which is why I feel like Fenty did so well with that. Cause like I know MUFE also has a comparable shade range but I've never really felt like they've tried to appeal to deeper skin tones if that makes sense? Like I feel like there's quite a difference in just making the shades to make them because it's the trend and actually including people of those shades in the campaign and appealing to them, which I feel like Tarte has never done. I think that's why subconsciously I never really bought that much from Tarte in the first place lol

I think Tartes biggest mistake was not in the lack of initial shades, but in their ignorant and telling, "darker in the summer lighter in the winter," response. That response was not a mistake or poor decision making that was from a childs mouth unfilered truth. If they had just said, "POC shades dont sell as well so we we're testing the financial waters before a full launch," ppl would've been mad, but most would've understood or at least supported them when the full launch happened. Now as it stands they showed their asses.....and somethings you can't unsee.

I absolutely love how you always bring logic and facts into these discussions, and can so easily see things from several sides to come up with the best explanation for the way some things go down. So many people jump to a negative opinion because they don't have the ability to see another side, or don't have the facts needed to truly keep it real and have a rational discussion. Business is so rarely about personal issues, it's a numbers game, so taking things personally just doesn't make sense. Thank you for everything you do.

Even though tarte is getting all the heat right now, but I always felt left out with shade ranges with a lot of brands, I remember going to a Chanel counter wanting to try a foundation which I heard so many people talking about years ago & the shade range wz ridiculous & wz just told they going to “relaunch” more shades!🤔🤷🏾‍♀️ everybody need to hold all brands accountable, but some brands get a pass like Charlotte Tilbury, I don’t think her brand is inculsive & many more like her, I’m only using brands that are inclusive

I do agree with most of what you said, Stef. I do think its hypocritical to bash tarte for there limited shade range but will recommend a product or praise a brand that also has limited shades/range as well. My issue with Tarte wasn't so much the initial launch and lack of shades, although of course I didn't think it was okay. But I did take issue with the way they handled the situation. Had they just admitted the lack of darker shades, said they were going to suspend the launch while in the meantime work on the additional 10 shades, and then re-release it, i think everyone would have respected them more. However, they disabled there comments, never issued a real apology (issued a lame apology on there insta stories) and issued some really ignorant statements (saying that the lighter range was because people are lighter in the winter vs. the summer). It was just all across bad.

When I enter my color IQ on the Sephora site, there a only 4 actually foundation results. Here are a few recommendations of brands /colors worth considering. 😀 Clinique (cream chamois), MUFE stick (soft sand or sand), Hourglass foundation stick (warm ivory, golden natural, sand), Revlon Color Stay (can’t find mine for the shade), L’Oreal True Match (natural beige). Good luck!

I completely understand companies producing products for the middle majority financially but why not formulate the products for the ends of the spectrum but produce less stock? Also tarte can afford to produce shades for the ends of the spectrum. They’re not an indie brand they can afford trips for influencers. I just can’t support them they don’t even try with any of their foundations.

I support every person is allowed to his or her own values and beliefs and you always seem to say your point while trying not to be biased or ridicule others views. I so love your channel and your straight up honesty as you seem to be one of a very few, and I mean very few, woman who stand by what they say and the equality of should be in place for all people of any color. The fact the you placed yourself in saying that being the beauty field community of the importance of addressing all people of color from the extremist of the lightest skin color to the darkest of skin colors and all other color in-between reflects on your wonderful heart...thank you. I’m a woman who is just now beginning to dabble in makeup as I’m recently divorced and beginning a new chapter in my life I so enjoyed watching you, Wayne Goss, and some others as you educate and explain products and so thank you for for doing that. What was saddening and straight up B.S. from Tarte was that it’s a company knew better as the company who created their concealer, ShapeTape, in an array of several/multiple of different colors/shades knew what to do from the onset. In fact creating the ShapeTape foundation should have been very easy, easier than it was for Fenty Beauty as I stated before. Tarte already had a template of all the shades due to their color shades that Tarte created for their ShapeTape. It’s really very difficult for me, a woman who is now learning about makeup, and I am My Own Color (caucasian) 1st generation Hungarian/Austrian/German to understand Tarte’s ridiculousness of being outright stupid about their ShapeTape foundation, as I stated before, the foundation color shades would have been so damn easy as Tarte already had a fantastic template to work from to create they ShapeTape foundation. It really saddens me and my daughter that Tarte did a major fail. I would’ve possibly given Tarte an forgiving thought for their sad action, was after their poor release to pull off the foundation and re-release the ShapeTape foundation once they created a more complete line of color shades.

My opinion on Tarte, is that your "economics lesson" makes sense. But Tarte is lacking neither money nor demographic. They are based in a country with a diverse range of skin tones, and they are a huge brand. They are not some kitchen-made indie brand. They can afford it. Can you imagine how much hype the Shape Tape foundation would have brought if it had had 30 shades in both formulas? Everyone would have been all over that shit.

I think however you also need to consider big brands and companies like this are always looking to turn a larger profit, flat sales aren't good sales. How do you do this? You discontinue products and shades that don't sell as well to make room for products and shades that will do better. And like Steph said unfortunately in America and countries where Tarte is sold, while yes there are a lot of people of colour they still are not the majority compared to fairer skin tones so financially it may not make sense to even originally launch these shades. Not saying it's right but it all feeds into a larger discussion of why and how do we change this.
@RardTangler
@RardTangler 6 жыл бұрын
My opinion on the shape tape is this. They had 15 shades with the launch. 12 of those shades catered a lighter skin tone. People of darker skin tones had /three/ shades to choose from. Women of color make up almost half of the American women demographic, yet only 20% of Tartes launch were for them. I think that it should've been 3 shades for light, 3 for medium/dark and 3 for deep/dark. Then, when they announced the 10 extra shades, they could've dispersed those 10 shades throughout the range instead of having it marketed towards women of deeper skin tones making them feel like an afterthought.

The funny thing with IT cosmetics is watching the sale on QVC, the medium tones are the ones that sell out first, then tan and rich. You would think that would encourage them to be more diverse in their offerings. I'll say though, even being fair, their shades don't work for my skin, either too light or too dark, and have oxidized.
