I had one as a loaner when my Bagger packed up and i loved it. Really fast bike with superb handling and the Boxer engine made it awesome coming out of the slower corners. Being naked keeps the top speeds down, wizz it up through the gears but soon have to slow it down to more normal speeds due to the wind pressure.I loved it. As a 2nd bike it would be excellent.

Great detailed review, no stupid music, no robotic voice, own a 2016 r1200r, great all around bike, took off the flyscreen for nice clean air, screen causes reflection and noise, hepco Becker c bow luggage, heated grips, cruise control, water and air cooled ,shaft drive ,shift assist, abs, esa, keyless ignition, traction control, rider modes, info modes, GPS prep, over 200 miles per tank, great handling, flickable, comfortable, its not a gold wing, its not a Harley, and its not a Ducati or Padilla, its a boxer motor than can do basically everything well!

I've got the 2016 model , they are a great all round bike , I thought after a few months that I wasent over excited by it but the more I think on it - it's just that it does everything at its ease , shaft drive is great too for lack of maintenance & keeping the rear very clean compared to chain & sprockets , gear shift assist eats up the rear tyre a bit quick due to faster acceleration , comfort is a big plus compared to any other bike in its class I think

Yeah I think we tend to forget that these BMWs just do the job well and we mistake that for being boring - in fact they are very good at the job for which they are intended. Thanks for watching - TMF

Another fine review Mr TMF. I own one of these and I've put 18,000 miles on it in less than a year! in general riding I get over 50mpg on a more sedate touring ride 56-60 mpg is easily attainable which is mighty impressive in my opinion. I've sent you a personal message! cheers tony

Hi I've just bought one of these, upgraded my F700GS! You ask why would so one buy one of these instead of other bikes in the range, for me one of the most important factors was the riding position, I have carpal tunnel, and the position of the bars is great. Then you add in cruise control, lovely engine etc.... 😀Great videos keep them coming!

That's a Sport specced up to Exclusive. And here is a nice thing. The frame and handle bars and paralever are all the same as the GS so the stuff fits. Mine has GS bark busters to keep the hands out of the breeze and aux lights which really light up the road. Motorways are fine as get to speed, switch on cruise control and off you go, zero stress. Can't wait to try the new Dynamic Pro suspension settings on a 2017 version. The S1000R doesn't have hard luggage and needs Super Unleaded to run according to the handbook. Think lighter faster and little GS and it's about right for this bike. Nice review as always.

I've just bought the same bike but without ESA, this is my second bike, after doing direct access last year and buying a Crossrunner 800. A quick visit to my local Motorrad dealer and they had a pre reg bike in the showroom fitted with the comfort pack, which I traded up to immediately. Can't believe how easy the bike is to ride, it feels so light and manouverable, much more so than the Honda and really inspires confidence. The engine is peachy smooth and makes it easy to make relaxed progress just using the torque of the engine leaving you free to concentrate on the road and traffic.

citizenpmd56 I currently have a Crossrunner and have a test ride at the end of the month on the R1200R. Paid £10400 for my crossrunner and BMW are offering £6500 for it as trade in 😱
@citizenpmd565

Go for it if the figures work for you. I have no regrets, I loved the Honda but this trumps it easily with monster torque and importantly the suspension, brakes and tyres are way better and make riding a doddle.
@HJM1974

citizenpmd56 I did enjoy the test ride. Found it to be punchy in 2nd and 3rd. I loved the low down weight. The cross runner feels heavy fuelled up and the R1200r didn't. It's in for its service this Friday and I am having the Africa Twin DCT for the day. I really like the DCT and this could also be my next bike. I didn't really notice the electronic suspension when I rode the exclusive 1200?

The overtaking poke is immense on the BM , any gear will do !. I never tried the ESA model, I know people who have ridden both and say there's not much of a difference to notice especially for everyday riding. I'm not going back to chain drive any time soon, love the easy to clean shaft drive bike, no more dirty horrible oily chain to clean and lube. Plus, I reckon the BM looks fantastic !

Hi mate, great review. I owned the R 1200 R for 8 months and put 10,000 miles on it during that time. I added an SC Project slip exhaust and it sounded amazing I have to say. Great all around bike but wasn't all that exciting to ride and when the Tuono Factory went on sale at my local Aprilia dealer I couldn't resist making the change. If I could have afforded to own both I would have kept the R 1200 R for sure. I averaged 52-55 mpg and about 225 miles/tank but that was mostly non city riding.

It's a lovely looking bike. Add a V4 and you've got my attention. The bikes a proper weapon, it ticks alot of boxes for me. It's capable of so much from a Sunday blast to a European tour or even a commute or a trip out to get some milk. The only thing that worries me and I maybe wide of the mark is tank range and high fuel consumption. Apart from those two negatives I'm sold.

Another great review, not sure I'd swap for my Speed Triple though. As you hinted the ST probably has more get up and go. One question, where was the tacho? I'm assuming the dial was speedo but could be wrong (failing eyesight probably!).

Although the R1200RS is better protected by the fairing and windscreen, I prefer the handling of the R1200R and for protection and highway riding I installed a ZTechnik Z2355 VStream windscreen which is superb. Now I have a bike less tiring than the RS on long distance travel at highway speeds with a more up-right posture and lighter and better handling...
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 8 жыл бұрын
Agreed Rui - the R1200R handles in a much more sprightly manner than the RS - I guess it depends what you're after. I for one would have the R for Sunday blasts and the RS for cross-continental touring....Thanks for watching - TMF

It is weird, although I often think I'm a little bit weirder in that respect than most. I don't like many fully faired bikes for some or other reason, and I really don't like riding bikes with clip-ons and the attendant kilometer wide steering circle. I think the combination of cramped, uncomfortable seating position, the poor low speed handling and the suicidal need for speed on sport bikes makes them a bit useless for me.

I brought this bike - great engine with Akra and sports seat - so lovely - for my 32.5 inseam - so practical and 0-100 and 1/4 mile times competes with all bikes including speed triple! - so it’s amazing - but it’s speciality is that it can cruise alone - or push it around in the bends quick - a good rider will keep up with the best on team streets . I love 3rd gear.....do it all!

Just completed a 60 mile ride on the r12r, having it for a week as a loan bike whilst the GS is in for a service and having some other stuff done. Have to say, very surprised and very impressed. The motor seems smother than the GS, pulls quite strongly, (impressively so from mid range), handles nicely and is really good fun. The surprising aspect is that, once it picked up from 4K or so, it seemed to pull as quickly as the r1r, but had none of the downsides - manic motor, harsh vibes, aching wrists, aching bum. After the r1r it was great to be on this boxer. If I could justify having a second bike just now, this could be it. Much overlooked bike it seems.

I owned the olded aircooled version, the best boxer to put on a trailer behind a car, drive to the Alps or Pyrenees. Unfortunately, no mountains in Amsterdam, for long distance travelling and then going for mountain riding, nothing beats the trusted GS (although I did 1200km a day easily). Tip: The higher seat makes it less up-right and a bit more sporty ride.

Yep, like the nineT (Roadster, not the Scrambler), beautiful bike. The arguably most beautiful aircooled would be the HP2 Sport. But after owning a Lc GS and the GsA, the LC engine is definitely a smoother engine, with (only) 15 ponies more. Wish they could make one with 150+ hp, because the KTM's and Ducs are more exciting to ride. When is the review of these bikes coming TMF?

Great review. I've owned the 2016 R1200R Exclusive for 6 months and put on 11000 Kms and love it. Great for the daily commute, weekends away or even cross country. I test road the 2017 GS last week and have ordered one for my 3 month South Africa tour next year. The GS will handle the rough road conditions with the extra suspension travel and has a little more room for my luggage. I'll be keeping the R for the shorter trips, just love the boxer. Keep up the great reviews, cheers.

Thanks very much. Good review. I own a GS like yours, an RT and a XR. Used to own an S1000R and I have ridden a RS quite a bit. I have never ridden the R, and have really wanted to, hence my interest in the review. A lighter and lower version of the GS, with narrower bars would make a fantastic all rounder/commuter. The Akro sounds good as well. The only downside it the ugly front. Thanks again. Rgds Glenn PS - I have lots of time in Trinidads and Tobagoes as well.

the r1200r is a really fun and not fully appreciated bike! it is pricey relative to its competition though such as the speed or street triple which also are fun roadsters. the rs has a longer wheelbase and different rake and trail i believe which is why it felt much more reluctant to change direction in my experience test riding these two bikes. i do prefer the look and fairing protection of the rs i only wish it had the chassis? of the r1200r and then maybe the rs would be perfect :)

I've done 16,000 miles on my 2015 1200R, including tours around Germany, down to Austria and Italy as well as Spain and Portugal. I think it's a great bike (previously did 18k on a K1600GT and still have an old R1100RT so my first naked since 1977!) and I much prefer it to any of the BMW fours. I've had both an S1000R and an XR loan bike whilst mine's been in for service and they are very buzzy and although great for a Sunday blast I find them very "busy" and quite annoying on longer runs. The R is a very easy bike to live with and I think the most fun of the boxer range.

As you know this is my bike! (Red and white sport.) I agree, a good all-rounder. My GS was a better tourer, but I always found the better protection meant I went (too) fast. I have the same bike\year fully loaded and it puts my other 18 GSXS to shame in all aspects of riding. The GSXs is faster WOT and that's about it. I've see no reason to trade up to the 1250 either. The bike is so confidence inspiring until the electronics are turned off that is. It then slips and slides with frequent front wheel action and one needs to be focused. After 45k it remains my favourite ride.

I bought a new F800gs last April. Have to say its a great fun bike, comfortable, superb on fuel and even the tiny screen is bearable. The big problem I have is under breaking. The noise takes a massive dive. Will probably lose a lot of money doing it, but I'm looking to change to one of these 1200r's, or the 1200gs. Don't really ride motorways, even if we go away on a trip. Gonna need to go try both I think. Thanks for the in depth review, appreciate it

You have neglected to mention why this bike is the sleeper int their model range. It takes the RT style hard bags, which converts this bike to a light weight tourer. My top case from my GS also fits easily. With the large screen it has replaced my GS for the hi way. Same electronics and convertebility makes it very much an all-rounder.

Hi TMF Thank you for your honest review. I'm pleased you tried this model because I own one and having tried all the other bikes in the BMW range found it to be one of the best real World bikes they offer. I believe the main reason why the bike seems bland is the standard exhaust. Fitting the Akrapovic, minus the baffle, combined with the Dynamic performance mode, cured that and never failed to put a smile on my face! This bike provides more than enough performance for safe quick overtakes and the semi-automatic suspension keeps the ride stable and comfortable. I have used it for Sunday morning blasts on A and B roads, 80 mile commuting and not once have I ever been bored with it. The running costs are reasonable with typically late 50mpg helping. Having previously owned a number of BMW GS Adventure bikes, mainly for their road presence, I decided to improve the road presence of the R1200R LC and fitted the BMW LEDs to Krauser engine protection bars. This made a big difference as I found cars waited for me at junctions and moved over on the motorway to let me through. In short, after nearly a year, it is a hard bike to replace!

It's my time to renew my bike, so the only models on the market today that I really like is the 2017 XJR1300 and the R1200R the only thing that stops me from the BMW is price and costs in maintenance, the reliability that everyone talks about the Bavarian electronic failures on its vehicles, and of course the options that you have to add to it which increase its price. But is a lovely bike, love the design and looks, the XJR is also another diamond roadster to be taken in consideration, any feedback you can share ??

Well I've not ridden the XJR so I can't really comment - if it were me chosing between the two I'd be very keen to ride both, on looks alone the XJR would win for me (both great bikes I'm sure though)....

I have the 2015 lc model and must say that the roadster is a great all-rounder. This may put some people off saying the bike is uninspiring ; it is not a beast and not meant to be, but it will certainly put a smile on your face when you turn the throttle up or ride the twisties. True, it is not a light-weight naked but a roadster. Despite the weight it handles remarkably well. I am 5ˋ8 and feel very comfortable,however, if you are tall , you may feel cramped. Wish the community well through this crisis and ,of course, thank you tony for your time and effort for another great video. Big fan .

I really dislike the look of that screen, as though it's just been taped on. I like the front end of the s1000rs, but I hate the split lights. I don't know why manufacturers keep splitting headlights, it just looks rubbish when only one of them is on. I'd love to see something between them, with a bit more fairing on the front than this, but with this one's light and the engine too - got to love the boxer. Lovely noise, particularly with the quickshifter when shifting up.
@TheMissendenFlyer

I'm completely with you on the split light thing Matt - if you must have two then go the Yamaha/Triumph route and at least make them symmetrical (and please make sure they both come on all the time rather than just one!)....

Again an excellent review tested one of these at the weekend and fell in love with it, which I didn't think I would, I had been looking at Tracer GT and the Tiger XRT (current have a tiger XRT the old one). @@TheMissendenFlyer 6 months on and this bike is fantastic, all the weight is at the bottom making it so easy to get through traffic, it comfortable quick enough for me and it handles like it's on rails. I can't believe I turned my nose up at the boxer engine for so long. I had up until the 1200r had been changing my bike about every two years or so I don't think I will be letting this one go anytime soon, it would have to be a bloody good bike to get me to swop

Yeah, I was pretty shocked (for embargo reasons) too - first time I can remember sitting on a bike that hasn't been officially launched / the journalist haven't even sat on yet! It was at The Great American Motorcycle Show, here in Atlanta, Georgia. They also unveiled the Bobber - official 'Brutal Beauty' launch evening for ATL is Tue evening - quite some time after the UK - which I'll be going to as well. I must say, I was pretty taken with the Bobber! Anyway the new Street Triple shown had already done a burn out and was nearly through the rear rubber! And the news is good IMHO. The matt silver of the RS looks good (lightly lacquered I’d say) in the flesh. There was really decent travel and damping in that rear shock and of course it felt v-twin thin and 650 cc light. In short, they’ve got it right. The clocks look nice, the seat is roomy and the bars fall easily to… well, you know. The seat height is very tall. Maybe as tall as my M1200R? Although the suspension sinks much more than my Ducati. The LRH kit might prove popular. I took some pics if you want to ping me a message. Anyway - s'gorgeous - you'll buy one! ;-D

Yes 765. Everyone I spoke to on Saturday kept calling it the '800' ST-RS, so it kinda stuck in my head. But it's much closer to 750 of course. When I was a younger guy I always thought the ultimate road bike would be a 750, tuned for torque, that made about 125 hp and was 185 kg wet. It might have taken longer to develop bikes like that than I'd of thought, but at least they're here now! The Z900 announced on monkey spanker weekly today looks like it's closest competitor. But I'd take a Triumph triple all day long for my personal tastes. I may have got the cc wrong, but I'm 'not' wrong about you buying one matey! ;-D

Mine is now realizing a little over 3,100 perfect miles. It's ideal for my needs and marks the fifth-in-a-row open (non faired) bike I've owned. Highway - county road speeds are not a workout, just a normal experience as ever that I enjoy. I avoid rain. It's objectively the nicest overall - most well balanced - motorcycle I've ever owned or briefly been on and I fully understand where BMW are coming from as it were. All marque are great. That said, I am now more than hooked on BMW.

I think that is one extremely excellent motorcycle! I suspect I would prefer the RS version because I like fairings and a more forward riding position. I'm not going to test ride them because I can't afford it right now. I love boxer BMWs. Lovely low CoG with such user friendly power. They make such great all-round bikes as you say. Not as powerful as a good multi like the speed triple, but plenty enough power as far as I am concerned. Robert Pirsig rode a BMW in his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". That is recommendation enough for me :)

Thanks for the review TMF. Like the shaft drive, bullet proof engine, she's a bit bulky perhaps for a fun naked. Styling wise, as always with BMW is very Marmite they arent always the most attractive bikes, unlike Italian bikes for example. Not quite sure what that bike is best put to use at. The s1000r would get my money over that I think. Ive ridden the Speed and the s1000r has the Triumph licked. Having ridden it what application is it best suited to TMF? All rounder, tourer? Obviously anyone who buys one would be happy, after personal preference it's still a quality product. Ride safe must be a bit chilly.

Hi TMF, Great review as usual, I bought one of these on the back of this review and others, a Feb 2017 bike with all the packs but the previous red framed model with a very clunky gearbox (1400 miles on the clock). Is your GS clunky (sometimes a c,c,c,clunk) from neutral to first and still noisy up to 3rd? Mine sounds embarrassing. When it's cold, neutral to first is silent. Also on start up at any temperature, it rattles for a second or so. Sounds like hydraulic tappets filling, but not nice! Should I just ignore this stuff and put my faith in BMW, and accept it's normal?
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 жыл бұрын
Yes my GS is a bit clunky (as you'll hear in my videos) - I think it's all part of the "character"! Don't like the sound of the rattling.....maybe get that looked at?
@MarkStraker
@MarkStraker 7 жыл бұрын
Spoke to BMW today. The rattling is the cam chain tensioner pressuring up and is perfectly normal, apparently they all do it. They also said it's called a 'crash' gearbox for a reason and the 2017one is much improved. I'll stop worrying and just enjoy the bike. She went in to BMW for a RH front fork oil seal leak and they replaced the whole leg. He said if there were any noise or gearbox issues on the test ride they would have told me. I think they would have liked the warranty work. My first ride was from Bournemouth to Stamford in Lincolnshire (180 miles, unless you get lost like me, 200 miles) and I could have done it again without stopping. What a great bike! I love it! The wind takes all the weight off my wrists and shoulders which makes it really comfortable for me. Mine's doing 56mpg and I don't hang about. I'm looking at the Shad luggage. Any opinions on that? Apparently they make the OEM BMW luggage.

Yes I think it would make a great tourer - very comfortable machine on a long run I would think - luggage is the only question for me....

Hello ! First of all , nice review , really enjoyed the whole vid! The design on this bike is absolutely stunning! I'm up for a new bike in the next year and I'm thinking of bying a monster 821/ r1200r / street or speed triple . Do you have any suggestions ? Pros/cons between them? Mostly want the bike for work (in town riding) plus a few trips on the weekends! Thanks in advance!

When you (and maybe some YT commenters here) say the bike is not as hairy as the Triumph, or not too exciting, do you mean the top speed of the R 1200 R isn't as high as for those bikes? Or that the torque is less, and/or comes at much lower revs on the R 1200 R, so you get hit with that surge of power when you're going slower on the R 12000R than the competitors? Or some other thing? I'm not contesting your point, just not sure I follow.
