For those wondering the "civilian" look of the rations: Every single piece of these rations can be picked up from a well supplied Finnish supermarket. There is no separate military MREs, as demands of non-deployed force of around 30,000 are rather low. So instead civilian suppliers are used. Makes it also easy for reservists to get "war-time" supplies for their hobbies. This also has a massive national security bonus: 99% of wartime forces are made up of reservists (Finland has universal male conscription). In times of crisis, the FDF would balloon up to atleast 280,000 strong field army, largest in the EU. By using civilian products, the society can divert these products exclusively to the FDF. This means no need to boost MRE production by factor of 10, but using existing production lines and maybe boosting those slightly. Civilians will get the "wet" food and those that can't stand field conditions. (This is speculation and one of "could-be-done" situations, haven't seen official info on this!) Also, regarding usage of MREs in the field: -Not sure how this is in the instructions, but mixing the porridge is a must. Even once during the heating, after the initial stir. Not doing this seems to be a common mistake. -Energy drinks are meant to be mixed in 1L canteens. The drink is to be consumed over longer period of time. Though naturally one would drink more during dinner, but not a liter at a time. -The contents change every 5 or so years. My rations had same pate, bread and hand sanitizers. Everything else is different.

As a conscript currently serving in the Finnish army I can say these rations are horrible. We never have enough time to heat up water for the main courses nor wait for them to be fully rehydrated. Most of us just eat the crispbreads, pate and nuts and resort to bringing our own food with us, mostly tuna. A can of tuna can be eaten in a minute while fully preparing a pouch meal takes like half an hour. Previously the rations consisted of canned food and weighed more but what good does the reduced weight do if you don't have time to boil water for the freeze-dried meals?
@okyourerightbut58936 жыл бұрын

I'd say that's just simply a fail on the part of your Platoon leaders and instructors. Our platoon had plenty of time to eat, and some instructors actually emphasized the importance of being well-fed. If the rest of the platoon is busy doing their chores, a couple/few men should be assigned to prepare meals for the rest of the unit.

Some ration packs come with shredded tuna, I think it replaces the protein bars if I remember correctly. Mexican cassarole and pasta carbonara are also possibilities within these rations, and of course, soy-based. Sometimes the crisp bread is replaced with weird french flour-free crisp bread that is pretty tasteless but comes in a cardboard box, so it's not all smashed up at least.

They are not using Blå Band meals anymore? When I did military service in 2015 they were still in use and they were really good. But nice to see that they have developed their own freeze dried meals, which apparently are heavily inspired by the Blå Band meals. I can also add that the freeze dried meals need to be stirred after you pour the water, otherwise they turn out lumpy like they did in the video.

Leader needs to get some non Finnish people to try their stuff after they try to fix the flavourings, probably UK folkes since they are more critical, all Finns will just say, "yeah it's OK or yeah pretty good" (often they say pretty good and I taste it and it's garbage) literally that's about as detailed as their opinion goes and it has to be very bad before they say "yeah that's bad", also they don't complain much in Finland and it shows in some things.

You are a brave man to have taken this task upon yourself. For a long time i actually ate those freeze dried meals but towards the end of my service, my body just rejected them. All of them. Even the ones that were deemed "ok" like pasta carbonara or pasta bolognese (extremely rare, only a few nco's and officer trainees have even seen one). But those sport drinks are the real win in the ration. I would even call it a life saver, especially in winter when 1. Your water wouldnt freeze in your canteen, just turned into a slushy thanks to them (if you were too lazy to strap it around your neck and keep it under your jacket) and 2. When on a recon mission or trapped behind enemy lines, your main supply of water would be melted snow, but without the minerals and whatnot that snow lacks, you won't be able to operate for too long. And not only did it add minerals to the water, but also kinda, almost covered some of the smoke flavor from melting the snow. Honorable mentions are the crisp bread + patee, honey roasted nuts and the chocolate, quick easy carbs to get you through the next hour or two.

I did my service if the FDF in 2006, the MREs were very different back then. We didn't have any of those "just add water in the bag" foods. Instead we got some basic porridge flakes and noodles you had to cook in your mess tin. In the forest we never had time to cook anything so I was always hungry, those crispbreads and the paté (which came in a tin instead of a handy tube) and the chocolate were pretty much the only things I ate out of those MRE bags. Sometimes I ate the noodles dry without cooking them because I was so hungry. Those MREs sucked big time. These newer ones seem better, I guess you could hydrate them with cold water as well. There's a saying in the FDF, "in a hurry to wait". It was always the same when we were out in the woods. Someone came to wake you up and told you have 5 minutes to put on your gear and pack your stuff and to take a leak, and then we'd wait 30 minutes, not allowed to do anything because something was just about to happen or start. And when you did happen to have some time, you didn't have a portable cooker or other source of heat because those cookers weren't issued to everyone.

What is the rationale behind giving soldiers in the field an artificially-sweetened sports drink? I'd think you'd WANT the calories. Seriously, a sports drink is supposed to have sugar in it. Sucralose in a sports drink is silly. Same with the sucralose in the protein bar. I mean, WTF?

Great video, enjoyed it a lot! :) This pack has changed a bit since I was in the service (2nd group of 2001). As this is for one day only, we usually got bunch of these (5 or so) at once when training camp/exercise was starting and then more during it depending on the duration. We also had some small canned meat stuff on these packs. After using these packs few times I always took extra chocolate bars and more canned meat and fruit with me to the exercises. Usually we heated the ready meals with small camping stove (commonly called trangia - name of the manufacturer) and I always added canned stuff to them which made them a lot better. The hard rye bread (näkkileipä) is quite traditional thing in Finland. We also used it as kindling for the tent stove (kamiina): spread some sticky army shoe polish grease (kenkälankki) between two pieces, light the corner and throw it in after the wood. Lit it up nicely, especially when the wood was bit wet.
