I don’t know what it is, but for some reason after a repair, we can test drive and idle a truck for days and everything seems perfect. But as SOON as the customer turns on the damn thing…BOOM.. check engine light. Never. Fails.

I'm willing to bet you're not putting a load on it like the customer is. Our 15 Freightliners will do fine bobtail after emissions repairs and throw codes as soon as I hookup to a trailer.

@@Terror1Void yeah I never get the chance to hook a trailer on. And all box trucks, flatbeds, and garbage trucks come to us unloaded.
@crewdawg20083 жыл бұрын
@@Terror1Void Ya know, there's something to that. My wife wanted a Tahoe, we went to test drive one at a dealership, she really liked it, I rode along as she test drove it, all was fine, then I drove it myself, and I stood on the gas to really put it to work. Wouldn't you know it? Check engine light pops. It was an O2 sensor, dealership made the repair, then drove it again, and all was fine. Whether it matters or not, it's a used vehicle, but we went ahead and bought it and haven't had an issue since. It's just always important, in my mind, to put a vehicle through the paces and make sure it's all solid.

This video is for all my brothers out there in trades where troubleshooting nightmares have had us questioning our own, very existence in the universe😄. How much better would the world be if repair technicians where as transparent as you. You sir are a true class act. Wish you were near my area in So Cal. Your work ethic will shine out to the rest of the department which in turn will mold more great technicians. God Bless you sir! After my cold pipe blew, on replacement, I noticed a lot of soot build up in that area of the manifold which I tried cleaning as much as I could without letting too much fall in. I did not realize those were ports behind that round thing. I'll have to go back and check if they need cleaning. My truck was still idling a little rough and not much power after the pipe change out but the MIL reset. I found the MAP sensor to be clogged of soot as well and after cleaning it, the truck was running perfect again. Which leads me to my question: What causes the carbon to build up quicker in that area?

There is a great carbon/oil cleaning solvent that most Ram dealers have on the shelf because of the EGR cleaning requirements for them. Block off all holes and pour in the quart of the stuff and you will be rather surprised at how easy the carbon comes out. I wish I knew who actually made that product because it works so well and I hate giving a Ram dealership any of my money. I’m approaching 100K miles and removing the upper and lower intakes for cleaning is on my list of things to do. Also, the fact you’re sharing your own missed diagnosis and the pain you’ve gone through just proves how good you are as a tech. You were diligent and eventually found the culprit. Great job finding it and fixing it.

Great job diagnosing a hidden problem. As my shop teacher always used to say, "We learn by doing" and that's the best you can do when the problem isn't obvious and the diagnostic instructions are generalized. That's why I take my trucks to the Ford store, their mechanics see and fix problems unique to the specific vehicle design.

Yes I have in a 2015 f250 but never set a code for it. Was in for a drivability concern due to a bad torque converter but took the intake off to check for contamination of the fuel system and bam the intake was nearly plugged solid at 90k. Stick with your guns and don't read past the original code p0401 egr insufficient flow. Congrats on sticking with it and finding the solution.

Around here with all the high idle time the farmers and utility companies do we recommend cleaning upper and lower intakes and map sensor as preventative maintenance every 50k or if it’s in for 401/207f repairs. It’s like the 6.0 all over again, some people don’t agree but after you fight several different codes caused by carbon, fleet customers understand and pay to not have anymore down time

I have a 2014 right now, with 401,207f, and that scr dtc too. What i did so far is, Cleaned both intakes, replaced egr valve and cooler, had to replace the exhaust manifold because the inlet pipe bolt broke, (i don't own that kit to remove the broken bolt) replaced all one time used parts on that, cleared codes, drove it and right around the 25th mile truck goes on derate, and the only code that shows is p207f. Checked reductant quality following ppt rd. Right now i recommended the NOX sensors. Both are reading the same. ...is crazy how this video showed on my feed like it is literally what im dealing with right now. 😅

Hi ARod, I appreciate your work. I have a '16 F250 Platinum with the 6.7 in it. Have seen P207F quite a bit. Every time I take it in, the shop says the DPF was clogged, they say they do a region and charge 375 for labor and give it back. They replaced the DEF tank and pump assembly when I had a P207A at 65795 miles. I understand why the filter clogs frequently, I don't drive it long enough or far enough to get it to clean on its own. I got a copy of FORScan and learned to do my own regens. My problem today is I got into the 50 miles before 50MPH warning. I got it home and put it on FORScan and as expected I got P207F. I did a regen and cleared the P207F but the 50 miles to 50mph didn't clear. Truck has just over 85K on the odometer. I'm looking for 2 things e. 1) Where do I go to find the driving procedures to reset these warnings, I'm mechanically inclined but not a mechanic (used to work on my own stuff back in the 80s & 90s), and 2) is there a comprehensive pdf out there that I and an owner can use to troubleshoot? Is it possible that I have the issue in this video if the only code Ive gotten in the last three trips to the shop are P207F? Again, Thanks for all you do.

I have had several super duties with the 401 code and that port plugged with soot. I remove the upper intake and clean all the soot from that as well. I am currently working on one with a 20EE and I did the pinpoint test which lead me to replacing the NOX sensors and modules. Went for a test drive and as soon as the PM sensor went through regen I saw the DTC count turn on. The same code of course, I checked mode 6 and the EGRT12 was showing 17 degrees when EGRT11 was 68 degrees. I am going to replace that EGR temp sensor and see what happens after I drive it again.

I believe I had that 401 code. It turned out to be the manifold pressure sensor. It was plugged up with carbon. I’m pretty sure you already know where the manifold pressure sensor is. It’s easy to check in his right on top of the engine.

I work at a ford dealership and I have a 2020 f250 customer complaint is check engine light p20ee nothing else. Nox11 efficiency. First thing I did was a regen regen saw soot loaded at 120% during regen I found an exhaust leak from rust hole in dpf system, after nox11 before scr. After regen I performed a def injection flow test. Clean spray pattern and perfect amount to specs. Sold a dpf and all 3 nox sensors and all 3 temp sensors. Installed road test 20 miles everything was good. Customer picked it up, brought it back next day for p20ee again. This time I cleared the codes and road tested while watching mode 6 and nox 11 would fail every 8 miles. I checked for failed ccv, none. Air filter? Dirty put a new one in. Boost leak? None. Egr valve operation? Perfect. Egr cooler is cooling. Map and maf I replaced just for the hell of it. I checked egr port behind throttle body clog free. I did everything the pinpoint test said and it passes everything but still get a p20ee every 8 miles. I don't remember what nox 11 reads while driving but at 80mph nox 12 is reading 0ppm sometimes will rise with heavy acceleration but never as high as nox11. This is a rental f250 from New York so I'm sure it a gets short drives all the time. Hints to why the intake manifold was full of carbon build up really bad for the low miles. 30k miles

Most def!!
@smtshrek36743 жыл бұрын
My diag for 207f/ee is drive it watching pids, def psi should be 72psi and under 15% duty cycle, when the injector first starts it should blip the psi indicating it’s spraying and pump duty cycle staying around 15% indicates it’s no plugged. Once system is up to temp and working steady 65mph cruise nox 11 should be 200ppm and nox 12 0-10ppm. If nox12 is higher than nox 11 then 12 is bad. If nox 12 is elevated 80-150ppm it most usually is a def quality/injection fault. If 12 is close or mirroring 11 the scr is not working or is overwhelmed. Now if both are elevated, 11 is 800-1000ppm and 12 is 400-600 maybe even matching 11 then there’s an upstream issue with egr not being able to lower nox and overwhelming the scr, anything from a bad valve, plugged cooler, and plugged intake.

Seeing this truck is a service truck and being a field tech myself I can imagine high idle time had a major effect on this issue. Okay so I’ve ran into a similar situation and the customer denied the intake cleaning services and just wanted to do the egr valve replacement. When they brought it back with the same 401 code they tried to back-flag me luckily in my notes I put lower intake manifold severely restricted recommend upper and lower intake services. Showed that to my manager he called the customer. Customer approved intake cleaning and never saw the truck again… Ever since then any time that I have similar codes I inspect that lower I take and if I see any gummed up gunk in there then I give the customer the option to clean both intakes that way it is on them whether or not they want their vehicle repaired properly. Very easy to over look things like this especially when you have two codes from separate systems. Very nice work getting down to the bottom of it! Also I was wondering if there was any way that I could get that cheat sheet pdf for the 207f and 20ee codes?

Do not feel embarrassed, as much as someone would ask why you couldn't find it the first time, it definitely was not a straight forward issue. I have dealt with various problem vehicles over my 7 years and the handful that really kicked me when I was down have made me into a better technician. It is all part of the game. I need to start a notebook of all the crazy finds I come across to reference back to. Currently dealing with an intermittent issue that has happened within a couple hundred miles or a couple thousand at times. I feel your pain brother.

I'm currently chasing idle surge on my truck now been dealing with it for over a week cleaning sensors and looking for leaks or trying to tighten bolts that aren't even loose since I had the upper and lower intakes off for disaster prevention kit. Somethings we miss and I'm sure when I find what's wrong it will be something I missed.... hopefully something cheap lol. Anyway great videos keep it up.

Excellent. I have so many questions regarding this. Mainly, with only 30K miles why is it clogged? Is it due to driving habits, or preventive maintenance, or what is your opinion here?

Wow a lesson learned for sure. When I did my disaster kit. I noticed my lower intake was nasty. About 1/ 4 to 1/2 inch of crud. So too it to the solvent tank and tried to clean. It was bake in hard. So power purple and soke it in a bucket. Scrub like heck and it was spot less. But thinking about it when I changed out my egr cooler. I was thinking it really didn't look that bad. So maybe my 401 was the lower intake?. Good to know to check if it happens again Arod. Thanks for the info. And keep plugging away.

Wow, not to long ago I was changing the CAC tubes and removed the TB on my 14. Uggggllllyyy. I cleaned as much of the black gueies as I could. Then I looked in the black hole and cleaned as much as I could there also. Had no idea there are ports in there. How did you clean them? That would be, in my opinion, the next important question! How, how, how????? Great video!

I saw the mention of high idle time(=bad news for emissions equipped trucks), but find myself pondering if there might have been a small casting fault in that lower intake (a raised burr or slight restriction) that gave the carbon an initial place to start sticking to , creating the port blocking buildup.
@pepelepew41173 жыл бұрын
My thoughts as I watched were that it might be a good idea to do a little polishing around those ports to prevent the the problem returning.

Working on a local municipal fleet that have high idle, they constantly burn through EGR Valves, Turbos, CCV Filters, Reductant Units, clogging the upper intake, eating the Throttle body, blowing CAC hoses, so many issues

I thought i saw bout everything until then 😔😔😔

@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod I just wrapped up another truck today, I don't remember what the codes were but it was stuck in forced derate, wouldn't regen, and oil consumption. 10 hours of diag, found EGR valve actuator was stuck closed, CCV filter clogged, 9th injector was stuck, NOx Sensor was biased, CACT sensor went out, MAP sensor clogged to hell, throttle body was clogged, and Turbo seal leaking. This truck was one their fleets loaners that sits for ever until someone needs it and they never bring it in for maintenance.
@joshuadomingo98753 жыл бұрын
Total repair was new turbo seal, NOx Sensor, lower CAC hose, CCV filter, EGR Valve, throttle body service, new upper intake and MAP sensor, cleaned lower intake, new dosing injector, and an exhaust manifold because the bolt for the EGR inlet broke off in the manifold lol. And Monday I get to test drive and do a couple regens because DPF load was at 103%. But ong the engineers that designed the new 6.7 deserve a swift kick to the nuts. Trying to take those turbo inlets off were a royal pain
@garrettc973 жыл бұрын
I think if you would have had some car and windstar experience you would have caught this right away. The windstar 3.8 would plug the ports in the intake to each port and throw a 401 or misfire when egr opens. The early v8 with the egr on the back side of intake had those 3 ports in the intake that would plug up and throw a 401.

I’m not even beginning to understand all of this, but, my question is why all of the build up? Tons of idle time without running it down the highway? Blowing it out? Also watch Bill At Powerstrokehelp.com. He swares you MUST use a fuel additive with every fuel up and every six months, really do a deep clean via the fuel. I use Hot Shot Secret with every fuel up and Diesel Extreme every six months. This to my knowledge has kept me out of the garage! I pull a 16000 lbs 5th wheel and use my truck as a daily driver. If the fuel is not burning completely, you get build up! YOU HAVE TO ADD TO THE FUEL WHAT THE GOVERNMENT TOOK OUT! You have to do it also because of all the added restrictions in the engine in the way of hardware! Awesome video! YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! Oh, I forgot to add: I have a 2017 F350 Dully that just turned 30k. Love this truck!!!!

2017 truck leaks oil and has all these problems. This is why I started buying Toyota after 16 and half years owning ford and GM. My 2016 explorer ripped off my pockets and my 2015 new Chevy impala couldn't keep up after 75000 miles because of vibration, electric steering, brake system, vacuum pump, engine power reduce.

We don't work on many diesels in our shop. On a gas engine, you can tell if the EGR port or passages are restricted by opening the EGR valve and seeing if it stalls the engine or at least makes it run very poorly. Same on the diesels I'm assuming?

I don’t know we’re you got that pdf but upstream components can definitely cause 207f and 20ee. Scr lowers nox but what else does? EGR! If egr fails scr will get overwhelmed. I have definitely seen that plugged up intake cause all kinds of dtcs including 207f and 401 that other guys already threw egr valves and coolers at it.
