Great video! I love my 2016 2.7. I’ve put 50,000 miles on it and have pulled all kinds of trailers. That little motor is a powerhouse.

I drove truck all over the country for 10 years ('92 - '02) and again for short periods after that. This hill he's climbing is no joke. When I trained new drivers I would tell them to multiply the grade % by the number of miles to get a "danger factor." If memory serves, going down the eastern side into Imperial Valley, it's about 9 miles of marked 6%, but the whole eastern slope is about 20 (this video is of him climbing this eastern side, going up). There are very few hills (on the interstate system) that are as long and steep as this one. For 18-wheelers this one is just as dangerous as Cabbage in Oregon (I-84 entering from ID) - it just doesn't get the inclement weather (maybe at the top once in a blue moon, but not on the east side where the serious grade is). Anyway, this is a serious hill that I KNOW put that 2.7 eco to the test. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO. Only other thing we don't know is the outside temp - I almost cooked a 2000 Mack Vision w/ their E460 engine going up a smaller, shorter hill on 40 westbound from Needles in the middle of the summer. Water temp was managed ok, but the oil temp kept climbing to the point I felt I had to lift before the summit... probably because it was already 110 degrees outside. I was pulling a food grade tank grossing close to 80k. It's apple v oranges on vehicles, but I'm trying to illustrate how outside temp can make a difference.

I towed a 6x12 Uhaul packed full full, the back of the cab full of luggage. I have a rooftop tent on a low rise bed rack, with my bed drawers, 12v fridge on fridge slide, dual batteries, with my second battery being a 60lbs AGM deep cycle 100ah battery from Questa, NM to Las Vegas NV. I averaged 11.4mpg had no problem maintaining 75-80mph. The 2.7 is an amazing engine

I have a 2018 F-150 crew with the 2.7 EB, 3.55 rear end, 10 speed transmission and towing a Sunset Trail Grand Reserve, Dry weight is 7500, on the scales ready to camp, 8435. Around town and highway I get between 18-22 MPG, towing, drops the 14-16 MPG. I pull 6% grade of Cajalco Rd, which is 11 miles long, and the Cajon Pass at 60 MPH with no problems. Love my Ford and how well it handles.

Mike Jones how long is that RV? Those weight specs are almost the same at the travel trailer I want to buy. The length of the one I’m looking at is 37’7ft with 1000lbs tongue weight and I haven’t been sold on the idea it could pull it.

Mike, what is your axle ratio? I also have a 2018 with the 10 spd. The RV I'm buying has a dry weight of 6200 pounds. My ratio is the 3:15.

I have no doubt the 2.7 can handle your weight but look at the specs on your door to be sure you are legal.

Thats impressive for that weight. If you got the 36 gal tank option, means you can go nearly 500 miles with 10% reserve while towing.

I pull 6,500 lbs with my 2.7 through the Colorado mountains all the time with zero power issues. Not so sure about the reliability, one of my exhaust valves failed and ruined my engine at 25k. Ford replaced it under warranty with a new engine that now has 23k on it and it seems rock solid so far. Just pulled my 24' fully enclosed v-nose snowmobile trailer for 1200 miles. Weight was around 5k. At 66 mph i was getting 10 mpg. For those is the comments asking if the engine can pull 7k or 8k. The answer, is all day long.

Ocotillo CA. One of my favorite spots in the world. Spent the last 3 years there dirtbiking that area, up and down the mnt to desert floor thru the abandoned railroad and Native Tribal Caves. My little 2.7 Tacoma hauled my trailer thru there when i moved this year. Wish i had my 2.7 Ford pulling then!

Thanks for doing the video. Any chance you can update the text summary with the following: 1) truck specs, incl. gear ratio, and if you had any tow and payload packages; 2) trailer weight; 3) tongue weight; and 3) your payload. Cheers!

When I bought my '16 f150 2.7 i really didn't buy it to be towing anything but a year later we ended up buying a camper and I took my truck to glamis with a 6x12 enclosed trailer and the only complaints I have is the little 23 gallon gas tank and not getting a crew cab 6.5 ft bed. I felt like every 180 miles we needed to stop and get gas. Which if your not driving far it's not a big deal but we come from Wisconsin (2000 miles) so it kinda sucks.

time2travel that weight , I think you are better off with the 3.5 . 2.7 has amazing power for what it is , but the 3.5 will get better mileage towing heavier weight , less stress on the engine.

Haha, yeah it maybe looked worse than it was... I think going up hill like that actually made it show less gas than was in there so I knew we were good. gas was up the mountain about 20 miles... Needless to say, we made it!

Ecoboost’s will tow but the real question is how long will they last. A 2.7 with turbo will just make the small engine like all turbos do run harder and wear out faster. There’s a reason 99% Ford mechanics say buy the Coyote 5.0 V8. I would never buy a V6 no matter how many turbos they put on it.
@marcolas1982

I told over 7,000 lb the other day and I never even had to raise the engine up over two and a half thousand RPMs. Ford knows what they're doing. These engines were tested
@larrybe2900
@larrybe2900 5 жыл бұрын
This engine was designed from the ground up in relation to a diesel's needs. There is not any chronic problems with diesels that are made for the torque and all that goes with it. For tack on turbos I would tend to agree with you. If there will be "continuous" towing then get an engine better suited. The normal driving gas mileage more than makes up for an occasional tow.

By that logic the 6.7 Cummins is screwed compared to the 6.7 powerstroke! Just something to think about....

The v8 has oil consumption problems. Also for 2021, the 5.0 is now multi displacement and has an electric water pump and belt driven oil pump (as do all of the 2021 f150 gas engines) so, I’ll stick with my 2020 3.5 with its turbos.

Fords 2.7 is the most overbuilt engine in there line up, being its the highest HP per liter. Forged everything, water cooled manifold etc. The only people who push this opinion is guys butthurt that the boosted 6's make more torque and tow better than the v8's. The 5.0 burns oil and gaskets weep.
