Almost 10000 kms and time for me to complete my first oil change on the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring Edition with a manual transmission.
Pretty easy, and I walk you through accessing the drain plug, draining the engine oil, removing the filter, replacing the oil, replacing the filter, and other things you need to know to get the job done.

While most of the comments are busy being critical about petty stuff (if you guys don't like his brand choice, use a different brand, duh), I found this video to be pretty useful information. Looking forward to changing my own oil on my Civic Hatch now. Thanks and keep up the good work/editing.

Been a mechanic for 40 plus years, on a turbo motor you should always fill the filter with oil. the bushings that the turbo spins on don't like to be dry even for a nano sec. Buick Grand nationals came in with blown torbos all the time. Better to be safe than broke down.

don't forget to pop the hood. open the oil filler cap and pull the dip stick to help the old oil flow out better. OEM oil filter preferred. new crush washer. start civic and let run for 1 or 2 minutes to fill oil filter. Turn off and let sit for 5 minutes before checking level. Closing the hood by allowing it to drop at about 4 to 6 inches. NOT by pushing down on it. YIKES!!

You missed a drip of oil on the front edge of the bumper black! Man, those skid coverings are extensive! I have not been under my EX sedan yet but assume it is the same/similar. There are actually a few spots in the city I live where I bottom out :( But I still love my new Civic! Oh and one question for you. Was the cost of the oil and filter from Canadian Tire less than the dealership A1 service? I still have about 8500 KM to my first but just wondering if the fiddling actually still saves enough money (I did the changes on my old Civic and the charge for my 2010 CRV is close enough that I don't mind, especially where the dealer is across from my office)

Yep. Canadian Tire puts synthetic on sale all the time. I think I paid about $40 for the jug. Plus, I don't trust dealers. They always lose the screws for the skid plates or overtighten the bolt or cross thread the filter or something.

@wb2194
@wb2194 6 жыл бұрын
I would NEVER use that brand of filter. Worst on the market. The bypass spring is so weak some of them go right into bypass and your oil is not filtered. Stick with OEM or something like Wix, K&N, AC, Motorcraft, Mobile 1, or an old sock. Anything but that brand. Also the engine should be started before checking the oil since the filter can hold close to 0.5 liters.

@@starcraftgod1212123 No question about it no car oil plug is without it. a lot of cars have a crush washer some are folded copper or aluminum and some are solid aluminum but nevertheless it is still a crush washer, when taking off the oil plug look at the washer and you will notice it has been compressed because this aluminum is made extra soft to be able to crush to conform to the plug and to the oil pan, it is highly recommended to replace each time, this washer can only crush so much before it will start to have a slow leak and then it can no longer be crushed with the amount of torque that can be safely used without stripping the bolt.

Oil will drain completely with the car level, not on two ramps. Take the oil cap off before you pull the drain plug, it helps the oil to flow out better, no gurgling or spitting oil. Fram used to be good but, they are crap now, NEVER USE A FRAM FILTER! I use a Mobil 1 filter, worth the money for the life of your engine. Oil plug only needs to be bumped tight, the jackoff at an oil swap out place will strip your threads over tightening. Same with your oil filter, only hand tight works fine..... Check your motor out for leaks before you put the pan back on, could save you a costly repair in the long run.

i posted this on another oil change video - if you go to Amazon and invest in a 1/2 case of Honda oil filters (5-6 filters) it works out to $5 a filter. At that price there's no justification to go with FRAM orange filters - these are pure garbage - they are know to have pre-existing rust particles that will get circulated in your engine along with inferior filter media. He most likely found it on the bottom of the drain when getting the used oil into the canister. That happened to me. The shape of the oil plug in Honda Civic 2017 is deciving. My previous Honda Accord 2000 had different shape of the oil plug. In his and mine case it looks like the washer is stuck on the engine. Then it falls into the oil drain. So, have to drain the oil again and filter it when filling the car. Likely I am leasing a car. So, not going to keep it after 36 months.

Um maybe it depends. I got mine at a Toyota dealership. And it does not void the warranty so I'm good.

Hello, What's so wrong with Fram oil filters? Had my Honda Accord 2000 running on these for 16 years before I sold it. Engine never had any problems. These are the most available in auto stores. Please educate me. Thanks

In 2011 fram sold the company and they have been trash since. Look at any video comparing filters with their insides, Wix and K&N are the best 2 and basically any other filter is better than fram. My dirty sock could filter more than the stupid cardboard in these fram filters.

@@euggapushkinv2311 I agree, Fram oil filters do fine. They do not have metal end caps but what's wrong about that. They have never failed for me or for anyone I know.

@@euggapushkinv2311 - they are know to have pre-existing rust particles that will get circulated in your engine along with inferior filter media. Check KZbin. Fram man really just spend the 3 bucks more and get one from the dealer. If something were to fail on your engine they can say it was the filter and not warrenty the engine.

When the metal tray fell off the bottom of my civic after paying $100 for an oil change, I decided to my own from now on. At least if I damage my car, it is my not some 18 year old.

Gopro didn't do you much good. Still didn't get on the ramps all the way. No mention of the washer that should be replaced with the drain plug. Why was the little plastic container used to "hand off" the oil from the large container. Just pour it straight in and look at the ruler built in the oil container to see how much you've poured in. I also like the way the creeper puts you right next to the underside. Don't think you need a creeper to change the oil. Feedback.

Why in the world would anyone who knows anything about engines use that orange oil filter. You may as well not change the filter. Do some research and you will find that is a poor choice.
