It's really good that Mazda is not going the CVT transmission Route CVT's suck

I own this car and love it. I comparison shopped it against most of the competitors in the segment. The CR-V, with more cargo space, might be a better choice for a family. I chose the Mazda because I liked the luxury-like interior and the handling. The interior is now significantly quieter than past models. In addition, I found the Bose sound system in the GT trim is far superior to the sound system in the CR-V. I admired the ingenious configurable rear cargo space of the Nissan Rogue, as well as its incredibly comfortable seats, but the acceleration was a deal breaker -- it's totally inadequate. The Mazda is better, but its relatively pokey acceleration (much better than the Rogue, to be sure) is the one aspect of the car that I most wish were improved. Finally, I like the heads-up display in the Premium option package. I think it's an invaluable safety enhancement.

Great review. I had rented a diesel CX-5 in Japan 2 months ago and was absolutely shocked to see how refined and quiet it was. It is by far the quietest and most hushed unit both inside and outside the cabin among all brands (Germans included). Volkswagen may have tainted the image of diesel cars with the diesel gate, however, as shown by Mazda, the fuel is not to blame for but the lousy, sneaky corporatism. Another engineering milestone and winner from Mazda.

Actually, Mazda's new SkyactivX engine will use spark plug AND compression ignition, depending on engine load. This is what makes it unique from other HCCI attempts in the past. They just recently had a journalist testing event for that engine in Germany and all were impressed. It produces slightly more power than the 2.5 SkyactivG and improves fuel economy by a whopping 30 percent! Car and Driver noted some knocking in certain low RPM situations, but I suspect that will get worked out before production, which is slated to begin in 2019.

Just got ours 2 days ago. Frickin love it! We fell in love with the interior and softer ride. Test drove Rav-4 and CR-V and never gave Mazda a thought until, on accident, we saw a side by side video comparing the CR-V vs. CX-5. First thing we noticed was the aggressive front end. It looks bad ass! We then had to go to the dealership and check it out for ourselves. The reviews on this site is pretty much spot on. We chose the CX-5 mainly because of the interior and softer and quieter ride than the others in its class. Of course the CR-V has more oomph, but the CX-5 power is good enough for us. It's not like we are planning on breaking any land speed records any time soon. As for as using the same engine. No problem. At least when I need to find parts, they'll be readily available because they have been using the same engine in a lot of their vehicles for a while now.

Everyone is ripping on the engine, but I think the engine is on par with competitors' numbers on comparable engines. Ford's 2.5L puts out the same numbers, as does Jeep's 2.4L, although everyone wants to compare this to a turbo i4 or v6 option. Honestly, it's a fair assessment considering Mazda only has one engine option, but that is why they put all the energy into the transmission tuning. Could it use a turbo, sure! Mazda even admits that any engine will fit in any engine bay, so you could always drop a 2.5T in there and get almost double the power if you really wanted to. Good luck getting your hands on one, tho. While it's not gonna beat anyone in a drag race, I have zero complaints about acceleration because it FEELS like it's moving quicker than it really is, since the trans is so responsive. As a city driver, I think it's great. It's able to get out of its own way, can weave in and out of traffic, and provides a little bit of fun in a stop-n-go commute. On the weekends, I can take it out and play on the highway and still be able to open it up and enjoy it.
@TheAccordingtoyou7 жыл бұрын
It's not the engine that is the issue it's the lack of an upgrade engine. While the 2.5 is sufficient for most consumers and on par with the competition, there will always be a fraction of buyers that want more power. So, it's kind of a missed opportunity for Mazda because some competitors offering an upgrade engine.

Also an "article" from a biased and second party "reviewer" are about as reliable as their insight in this industry

Automakers are going to electric route anyway to get replace combustion engines. Hybrids and electric are the way to go sadly. With naturally aspirated engines reaching its limits, electric motors will be more common. Boosting more power and efficiency. More supercars are going to electric motors to gain more power. Also this article is from Engineering Explained. Unlike you with no knowledge he pointed out the pros and cons of turbos. Turbos have their problems and they aren't reliable like naturally aspirated engines and the maintenance cost will be expensive. Jason knows what he talking about.

Just my 2 cents, but I don't understand why reviewers continue to compare the CX-5 with CRV, Hyundai and RAV4. The CX5 is great looking SUV with a luxury/refined interior, while the other SUVs are UGLY and have plastic interiors. I keep hearing no power, limited off the line acceleration and no passing power, what? This is not a sports car, it's a comfortable, easy to drive, get around town SUV. Sometimes, I think reviewers watch other reviewers videos first and just regurgitate the same points. Take the Mazda badge off the CX5 and compare features, fit, finish and pricing to BMW X1/X3 and Audi A3 and I think you have a more reasonable comparison. I usually like Redline reviews, but this one is a miss! Btw, don't you have a Miata? I don't hear you talking about getting blown away off the line in your "sports car" , I'm just saying.
@caseyfryback82716 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Usually Sofyan provides balanced and insightful commentary but him saying this needs more power and in the same breath touts the CR-V (with its CVT) as a comparable and possibly better option for enthusiasts is confusing. Like you said, these are not sports cars - this is for carrying your family and sh*t around town but still having an enjoyable drive. How's that CVT drone in the CR-V?

@captainjack68906 жыл бұрын
As much as it annoys CX5 owners/lovers it is a generic compact SUV. Just like a RAV4, CR-V, Tuscon etc. Its not an Audi or Lexus competitor. Since we got that out the way I will admit the CX5 and the new CRV are the standouts in this class. And since people buy these not for their sporting pretension but for their practicality, the CRV wins. The marginally better driving dynamics cant out punch the CRV which is faster and more efficient and far more practical. Dont start on looks either, I think they both look dandy in their own way
@blahhblah66356 жыл бұрын
It's in the same exact class as the CR-V, Hyundai, and RAV 4. Keep in mind you literally just talked about "looks" more than anything and you can't make fair points based on opinions instead of facts. Looks are subjective. Also, Mazda purposely advertises itself as a sportier model. It's not a sports car, because it's an SUV, but it's aiming to be a sportier SUV while still maintaining many of the practical functions you get out of a "SPORTS" utility vehicle (aka SUV). That first letter in "SUV" stands for sport and they are just leaning more towards the sports side of it. In fact, the 2019 model actually improved the engine so now you do get that punch and shows you exactly what they are aiming to do. The reason to get this car over the Honda CR-V, Toyota, Hyundai, etc is this is for the more sportier feel. From a ln actual objective standpoint (not subjective like looks) the Honda CR-V out performs this vehicle hands down in most categories. It even has faster acceleration with a CR-V transmission and more towing/torque. It also has more space which are key components of wanting a SUV to begin with. It has better MPG. Your only qualm is you think it looks worse which is debatable depending on whom you ask. Besides, looks alone aren't good enough when we're getting down to the nitty gritty. I disagree with your assertion. This is not a luxury vehicle. It is still in direct competition with those in its actual class. It may have a luxury feel, but that doesn't equate to being in the same class as a Alfa Romeo, Lexus, Porsche, etc. which would likely all have more than just the looks anyhow and stout better performance overall in many models. It's a step in a direction towards a more luxurious cabin, but you're overstepping boundaries to call it a full on luxury vehicle simply because you like the looks. It's a fine review and redline understands the audience and actual class this car is in direct competition with here. Can't wait for the 2019 model, because it literally does exactly what this review is harping on and shows how off you actually are here if you don't think Mazda is going for a sportier vehicle.
@blahhblah66356 жыл бұрын
@@caseyfryback8271 Say what you want, but Mazda is going in the direction of making its models more sportier and packing a bigger punch overall. They are evolving into a more sportier model SUV and are marketing towards those types of people who may want a bit more of a sportier feel in their SPORTS utility vehicle. Doesn't have to be a full on sports car to have more of a sports feel similar dynamics. Don't believe me, go look at the new 2019 model of this car they just packed on a much more powerful turbo engine and upped the horsepower for a reason. If they truly didn't care about making the car a sportier model or letting you have more power there would be no reason to make it so. So I must say, you are off if you think requesting an upgrade that this Mazda has actually been moving towards and is now releasing was off. The upgrades starts to put it in range with the Forrester XT that is mentioned in this very video. Gotta pay attention to industry before commenting. Mazda has always been the type to lean towards sportier cars. There SUV's are no exception and thus it is perfectly in line to have requested and be in expectance of many of the things he mentioned. Especially since the newest model actually follows just that.

As always, stellar review! The updated CX-5 should lead to even more consumers flocking into Mazda dealers. I was shocked when I heard the MPG ratings, though. The previous MX-5 offered pretty great fuel economy out of its SkyActiv Technology engine, but this updated one seems to leave a bit more desired in that area (maybe the increased weight, different tire choice, updated EPA rating scale, and the slightly updated engine tuning caused a slight drop)... 🤔 The exterior of this vehicle most definitely boasts a more poised and athletic stance over the taller previous model, though. Also, the interior is leagues ahead of many of its older competitors, as well. It just needs minor technological updates and it will be golden! 🌟🌟🌟 Overall, I feel like this update was a pleasent one for Mazda to conduct. Once Mazda offers that Diesel option, I feel like the CX-5 will be the 'complete' package for people looking for the best of both worlds in their Compact Utility Vehicle. From one car enthusiast to another, keep up the great work, Sofyan! 👍🏽

DraveAndBeDriven don't listen to these two gutter level degenerates. Your reviews are great and morons like this will never produce anything of value.

Bruce Solomon, Thank you so much for your comment, but as you know everyone has their own opinion. Honestly, I truly enjoy being as through as possible with my reviews, and likewise, in my comments.

I personally prefer the previous design, the refresh does look sleeker with cleaner lines, but it lacks character that previous one has. When I bought my first Mazda which was 3 sedan, I became a big fan of their cars, I used to be a Honda fanboy, but not anymore, Mazda interior is simply the best, the ergonomics are really well laid out and designed with the driver in mind, it's so comfortable that I would not mind living inside the car if I had to. Mazda does lack the latest tech features, but if you need all that tech stuff to drive, you are not a good driver to begin with. While inline-4 engine from Mazda is adequate I do sometimes wish it had more high-end power when on the highway, I've floored the gas pedal on CX-5 once and I don't think it can go faster than 85 mph to be honest. If they put anything close to Honda's delicious V6 engine in there, it would be golden. I think the Mazda car that I own now will be my last gasoline powered car, I will be driving it for 3 to 4 more years, by that time, EV models will be widely offered by many car companies and I will probably get one of those and say good bye to gasoline car forever.

When buying a few years ago, I test drove about everything in this class, the CR-V, The Rav4, CX5, etc. I ended up wanted a little more size and power, so went with the Acura RDX, but I will say that the Mazda was easily my top choice amongst the rest, and I was surprised by that. Since, I've recommended it to several and all have been pleased with their purchase! The intangible is this... By far the most fun to drive!

C. Michael Rush i may just wait til 2019 for the next RDX, because all these SUVs leave me unsatisfied, and I dont wanna choose only between the Murano and Ford Edge.

It is good as it is no need for fancy useless updates that make it expensive and adds no really value. Keep it like that just perfect 👌

I don't think you mentioned that the CX-5 's new motor will be a diesel . That should give very good fuel economy . Hopefully it also gives a bit more power. And also yes , very good review. Redline is the one I prefer.

Would be interesting to hear some opinions on this versus the new 2018 mazda 6 since both are in the same price range. Great detailed video btw!

i think the new styling is gorgeous. I keep seeing them and thinking they are cx-9. I think its a little off to say its hard to tell the difference between last look and this look.

2016 gt exterior looked much more exciting. Glad it's less noisy inside, although bummed they softened it up.

My 2015 mpg is horrible on the highway. The most I have ever achieved was 28mpg. Because it is heavy and has no turbo, it takes a lot more throttle to keep up with every day traffic, which kills the mileage. City mileage hasnt been bad.

Mazda is asking a lot from their Skyactive 2.5L engine. It's in the Mazda3s, the Mazda6i, the CX-5. Depending on the weight of the vehicle. I will be either spot on (Mazda3s or feel a little under powered). The handling and overall fit and finish more than make up for the lack of acceleration.

Excellent Review Sofyan! I'm impressed with how Mazda continues to deliver fantastic results with their vehicles on an overall scale, with the 2nd Gen CX-5 being no exception! Aside from the forth coming diesel engine offering, I do wish that the company would look into developing SkyActiv V6 Engines for at least one of their vehicles to be more competitive with the other automakers, while at the same time giving consumers more options to look at if they choose to buy a Mazda in a configuration like that. In addition, after testing both the redesigned Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5, which one do you like the best? - Michael

Between the CR-V and CX-5, we actually find the CR-V to be more appealing. We like its turbo engine and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Once Mazda updates that though, the needle will swing in the Mazda's favor.

One big thing missing is the the Android Auto/Apple Car play.

Sofyan if you were looking to drop your cash on a used SUV which one of these would you get Mazda CX-5, Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4? Could you list them in order and why. Thanks so much man good videos. Also I did have a chance to look at this CX5 and noticed the rubber around the door frame was the most loose I've seen in awhile
