Mazda's second generation CX-5 has launched with great success here in Canada, but how does it stack up to the luxury competition? We compare it with BMW's X3 since everyone is worried about Honda and Toyota.
We like to be different here at TestDrive, so we watched some other reviews of Mazda's new 2017 CX-5 and saw what most other automotive journalists have been comparing this car with. Sure the Toyota RAV-4 and Honda CR-V are direct competitors, but we like to think outside the box.
That's why we've taken the 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT with Technology Package and compared it with the 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d to see what's different about these Compact SUVs, and what makes them similar. We understand that the X3 is a diesel, so we won't be talking about the engines during this Showdown.
This episode of TestDrive Showdown will cover the main differences between these two crossover SUVs. While the X3 is a couple years older, you could theoretically pick it up for about the same price as the newer Mazda CX-5, but do you get as much with the BMW or is it just for the badge and privilege of driving a luxury SUV?

We continue to get comments about the CX-5 in the European market having parking sensors. Please note both vehicles in this review are Canadian cars, and we are a Canadian show. We do not cover vehicles outside of Canada, and since the sensors are not available here we cannot talk about features we don't get.

If you're considering a 17/18 CX5...just DO it. It'll be some of the best money you'll ever spend. It's a lot more upscale than the price would suggest, fun to drive, decent on gas, the new G-vectoring is very cool, it's a great road trip vehicle...and you won't have to live with the whole 'BMW - The Official National Vehicle Of Douchebag Drivers' stigma. lol

I had a 2014 CX5 GT W/Tech package and just bought a 2017 CX9 GT w/Tech. My CX5 was amazing but the newer interiors on the CX5/CX9 is a step above. It truly feels like a car that should be double the price. Mazda really has put themselves a step above their true competition (Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc) The new CX5 and CX9 are truly amazing vehicles for the price you pay for them.

Just FYI comparing audio systems is one place that would favor the older car. Speakers generally sound much better after they've been thoroughly broken in. My 2017 CX-5 Bose speakers were harsh and didn't pick up the full spectrum of sound when I first got the car home. Now a few months later they sound much better.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting, good to know! We'll see how the sound progresses over the next few months to see how it changes, we'll have the opportunity to see the X3 again in a little while. I believe the X3's harmon/kardon audio setup is a 12-speaker versus the 10 in the CX-5, but that shouldn't make a huge difference.

I found this comparison very intriguing. We needed a new car, went to the local Mazda dealer. With our budget, rather than buying a base model new, we decided to buy an optioned up used vehicle. Our choice came down to a 2014 cx-5 gt, or a 2013 bmw i28xdrive. Same price, roughly. The interior of the bmw, although beautiful, felt austere, clinical. Like sitting in a doctor's office. Once I sat in, and drove the cx-5, I didn't even want to test drive the x3. We love our cx-5. As much as I would love to own a bmw, it would look kind of goofy sitting in the driveway of our modest middleclass home. The cx-5, though, looks very classy there.

We commented to someone else on here about that. The X1 is about 5 inches shorter than the CX-5, and the X3 is 4 inches longer. A 2017 X1 xDrive28i with the same features as the CX-5 has an MSRP of $54,447.00 but includes a couple extras like parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, and park assist, but doesn't appear to include rear heated seats or rear USB charging. The X1 is certainly in the same compact SUV market, it's smaller than the CX-5 but would be equally as comparable, however the vehicle we had to compare with was this one.

The Mazda does come with an optional diesel in late 2019. And the Signature package offers a 360 camera, wood interior trim and a similar tan leather upholstery to the X-3. I’ve been researching for the best value. And the 2.5 liter turbo with wider aftermarket tires pretty much fills the deal at nearly half the price.

Very good review, thanks for posting it. I'm a longtime BMW owner and I love the brand. 7 Bavarian cars and 3 bikes. That said I'm thinking of the CX 5 for my next daily driver IF they bring the 2.2 liter diesel to the US. I tend to keep vehicles for @ 8 years and the thought of owning a current model BMW after the warranty expires gives me the night sweats! @terrychau2006 6 жыл бұрын
Jill Thompson Oh really, I agree 4 months that is too frequent... Here in Hong Kong the service centre told me 6 months is the standard period but they suggested me to have an inspection every 8 to 9 months if I am driving less than 20,000km per year. Therefore, in real case that may not be so frequent as they stated on the catalog. Also, don't forget the BMW is like 50% more expensive than the Mazda, which perhaps be much more than sufficient to cover the maintenance costs until your next car.

Nigel, thank you for this interesting comparison. Now that luxury car brands seem to be as popular as ever and non-luxury car brands become more upscale, comparing non luxury cars to luxury cars is something that many buyers probably do now (should I splurge on the BMW, or save the $15k for my RRSP?) Features and value proposition aside, I think that one thing that still distinguishes German vehicles from others is driving feel at high speed. Cars from BMW, MB, VW, Audi feel very stable, and solid at speed; these cars were designed for Autobahn speeds. The difference compared to other brands is not as great as it used to be, but it continues to persist. On the downside, maintenance costs still tend to be higher, although this might now be alleviated in initial years by "complementary" service plans.
@NileLivesey
@NileLivesey 6 жыл бұрын
That's certainly a good point, and I think the Germans have a better method for higher speed stability since they have higher speed limites over there. In Québec most of the regional roads are 90kph whereas in Ontario they've dropped them to 70kph. The CX-5 seems to be pretty solid around 125kph on the highways here, but we don't have much need to go faster. I know with BMW in Canada and the US they're cutting back on the service by a year, so you get about 25% less value from the included maintenace. With the specific Mazda dealership we bought our car from we recevied a VIP card which gives us 3 free oil changes, car detailing, and we paid an extra $100 for windshield glass replacement. Add that to Mazda's unlimited 5 year warranty and we think it's a pretty good value when compared with the competition.

The Mazda comes a lot closer in price to the BMW with the diesel engine offered for the 2019 model year. We just featured it a few weeks back, price was about $7,000 more than this GT, but with the price of diesel versus gas the Mazda doesn't make sense. Better off sticking with the CX-5 gas.

I initially looked at the CX-5 and was underwhelmed. I really wanted to like it but really did not care for the drivetrain or the way it handled. I was hesitant to test the X3 but did anyway. Even though I ended up w a 35i I tested the 28i as well. The engine and transmission on the BMW is light years ahead of the Mazda in terms of response and power. If the Mazda had more torque down low and a quick transmission I would consider it. I know you purposely didn't compare engines but for me that was a massive difference between the two.
@PRNTestDrive

If we had the xDrive28i we featured back in the winter we'd definitely have, but the amount of hate comments we'd get comparing a gas to a diesel would have been insane. We felt with the smaller BMW engine the car felt underpowered, but going for the large 35i engine is definitely the way to go with the X3.

The 2019 CX-5 Signature definitely has a lot going for it! We just put out an episode on it last week: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqXEhJqkl5edgKM I'd easily take it over the BMW X3, so far we haven't had any problems with our 2017 and we don't hear from owners with the CX-9 about the turbo 2.5L engine either. As long as you can live without a decent infotainment system and poor quality backup camera (360 cam in the US) then the CX-5 is a serious competitor in the upper segments now.

Last CX-5 model had parking sensors. I don't see why you need parking sensors when you already have a rear backup camera. I can clearly see where my bumper is and how close its going to touch the object including the corners. A backup camera is all you need. I wonder how cars parked back then before backup cameras existed. You mind as well get a car that can autonomously park itself if that is such a big deal for you. I'll have a backup camera over sensors that make annoying beeping noises whenever I'm 3 feet away from an object.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 жыл бұрын
That's great that you don't need them, everyone is different. I'm used to parking sensors only because it's what I've been driving for 2 years prior to this. The backup camera specifically on the CX-5, but on other cars also, has a wide fisheye which makes the corners impossible to accurately align in a garage. Often I'll back cars up with a camera and feel I'm going to hit the corner on the angled wall in our Studio A, yet jump out to see I have 2 feet of clearance. Parking sensors when equipped with a visible guide on-screen is ideal, like BMW has been doing for nearly a decade. The 7 Series BMW I drive has never had a problem backing into a spot sans-camera. Parking Sensors get me into tight spaces easily, cameras do not. Your mileage may vary.

Very interesting! I'm surprised it doesn't do that for us, what type of media are you listening to (USB, Bluetooth) and if it's through a phone, what kind?

Just imagine sitting down in the evening after car shopping and purchasing the BMW and realizing that you just spent $20,000 MORE on it than you would have if you'd gotten the Mazda. Just think about that. Twenty. Thousand. Dollars. More.

All to join the prestigious club of owning a BMW. Sometimes it's worth it, but after we re-did this Showdown with the X1 it became even easier to see why some of these vehicles are purely about the badge alone.

We think so too, but Mazda is going to have to kick it into high gear if they want to stay competitive. Things are getting very fierce in the consumer market, the new RAV4 that was announced at the New York Auto Show looks pretty interesting.

While Im no fan of the X3 (new one coming soon) I looked at buying a new CX5 last year but was put off by the bad ergonomics. The A pillar is to close hampering vision. The central armrest is useless as it is set too far back and the central transmission tunnel robs space in the front. The navi screen is too small compared to what others are offering and looks like an after thought. The rear seating area is also a huge disappointment . Access is hindered by the rear wheel arches and the rear window (doesn't fully go down) is small making the back of the cabin claustrophobic ( My kids didn't like it). I think Mazda went with design over practical ably . One more annoying and cost saving area is only the drivers window has one touch up and down. For the rest you have to hold the switch all the way while closing. Also whats with the small sunroof ? I feel overall that Mazda has cut too many corners with quality and practicality. BTW Love Mazda one of the best car companies out there and one with a great future, Great drives great looks great cars. Just feel disappointed with the CX5.

Those are all certainly valid complaints. We’d like to see Mazda take a look at these things and improve them for future models. We’ve talked about some of them with the 2017 Mazda6 we just did and the CX-9 we filmed a little while ago. We’re publishing a few more videos on the 2018 CX-9 later this month, some of the issues you’ve mentioned with the smaller CX-5 are fixed, but still lack others like a pano sunroof.

I have the CX-5. I used to drive an X5. Parking sensors are for people who can't drive. The lines on the backup camera are all you need to gauge distance perfectly. 9 feet. 6 feet. 3 feet. It's that simple. When parallel parking you turn the wheel all the way and reverse until the first colored line just touches the curb on your screen. Stop. Straighten out the wheels. Reverse back until the second colored line touches the curb. Stop. Turn your wheel all the way in the other direction. Reverse back until you are parallel with the curb. Stop. Straighten out your wheels. You are done. The cameras with the fancy moving lines that move as you turn the wheel actually make parking harder. Not easier. The Mazda approach is the best way to do it. Toyotas have the same camera. You don't need any retarded beeping sensors. That said, the blindspots on the CX-5 are horrendous and are almost a deal breaker for me. The BSM system mitigates that somewhat but I drive in NYC traffic and you can't rely on the BSM seeing the bicyclists with a death wish who live here. I wish the CX-5 had BMW levels of visibility but that's the only complaint I have. I would not buy a BMW SUV again. These things just never handle like performance cars. Paying the BMW premium for a bus was a mistake of my youth....Won't repeat. The new CRV is probably a better buy than the CX5 now....

Everyone is going to have different experiences using technology like this. To say parking sensors are for people who can’t drive is a little ignorant, considering parking sensors are used when parking, not really driving. I found and still find the parking sensors on my 7 Series to be insanely helpful when parallel parking on a street, or just backing into a spot. With a long car I prefer to be as close to the back of my spot’s line as possible, and if there’s a car behind the sensors make it super easy to figure out where my car ends.

Good video some interesting comments below. Wow 20k difference in price. First of all I'm thinking to even be compared to a car costing 20k more. Mazda should be pretty proud. Of course BMW is a more prestige marque. But hard to pass up Mazda's great offering that in this comparison, seems to come with a free 20k gas card. That's like eight years of free gas.

We went ahead with this video for one main reason, one the public wouldn't know. Internally Mazda has set their sights on BMW, they have for the past 5 years. Mazda wants to take on BMW with their designs and offerings while staying true to their brand. We couldn't think of a better comparison to do knowing this, and we think Mazda has done a great job getting to where they are today. It's true, the 20k price difference is a lot of gas money, and even a resale 2015 X3 as-equipped is a good $8k more than the Mazda we tested.
