I love the fact that you can get a manual transmission on the fully loaded model. I don't think you give up any options by going manual unlike almost every other manufacturer. I don't know of any other make that gives you all these features in a manual unless you pay double or more. Kudos to mazda for that.

Taylor Montgomery - I chose a 2016 Toyota Corolla over the Mazda 3 and very glad I did. The Corolla is a hell of a lot quieter, soaks up road bumps and imperfections very nicely. Gets better gas mileage, has higher resale value and lower cost of ownership than Mazda’s and the exterior styling ages a lot better than Mazda’s do.

Oh and the GT model has real leather, and a heated steering wheel. That's literally about it. 3-4 years and it's about exactly the same. Now when this new HCCI system comes out is when Mazda should be making the big bucks.

I have a 2015 Mazda 6 Sport 6MT. The 6-speed is a really nice transmission. It has the same engine and transmission as this Mazda 3. The clutch is really light, the shifter feels amazing going through the gears, and it's pretty easy to use. But, this engine/transmission combo has a massive dual mass flywheel so it hangs onto revs for a long time and it does not like to be rushed through the gears.

I don’t like the floor mounted electronic gas peddle, it’s a weird feel and you get very little feedback on how high you’re revving, which is made even worse because the tachometer is a little digital display so hard to tell what rev range you’re in. Also the torque just falls off too quick. I also don’t like the electronic e-brake. Comparing it to a Ford Focus ST manual transmission, I get much more feel in the gas peddle and clutch peddle in that car.

I just test drove a 2016 Mazda3 s-GT 6-speed and a 2016 Mazda6 i-GT auto this week. The Mazda6 was definitely nicer inside (has the parchment white leather), so it's good to see they carried that car's updates to the Mazda3 for 2017. That said, the Mazda3 I tested was perfectly fine as well and had 95% of what's on this car, with the added bonus of being a couple hundred pounds lighter while having the same power rating as the Mazda6. Frankly, if it's my money in this segment, it's likely to be a Mazda because they are nice cars that drive well. VWs are too pricey, and Nissans and Toyotas are so milquetoast. The only other Japanese car I'd consider is the Civic. Otherwise, I'd look at the new Cruze hatch and Focus, though I don't think their interiors really match this.

I traded out of a VW GTI into a Mazda 3 GT last year (2016) because of ongoing mechanical and electrical issues. Whilst I loved the GTI it just - continually - let me down. The prime reason then for me was something more reliable and with a premium 'feel' but without the hassles. After 2 years or so I simply cannot fault the little 3. It's not as punchy or as sporty as the GTI so it's not really a fair comparison in that sense - but it's really impressed me with it's no-fuss manner and easily hits every mark in its design brief. Only gripe is I wish they'd do an MPS version. I do miss the GTI whoosh. Not the bills though. I give it an easy 9/10.

Nice review on this one. I love the 6-speed but it sounds like you completely fall out of the power band going into 2nd gear.
@97I30T8 жыл бұрын
+DCookStaVideo You would be right about that. I have a 2015 Mazda 6 with the 6MT which has the same engine and transmission as this car. 1st gear on this transmission is incredibly short. I think they made it that way for better off the line performance. The gap between 1st and 2nd is huge. It kind of falls on its face when you shift into 2nd at WOT. The 2.5 SkyActiv engine has very little power at the top of the rev-range. Most of the power is down on the low-end which is actually really nice for driving around town. This engine and transmission weren't really engineered for spirited driving.
@DCookStaVideo8 жыл бұрын
That's what I suspected. I remember the very short gearing on my '01 Protege 5 speed. I did appreciate having good torque in pretty much every gear. My '12 Mazda3 2.0 AT has good spacing on the gears and the auto shifts quickly. I'd love a go-fast version of something soon though.

Yup, the Civic will not age well. Its trying to be too trendy and will look dated in the future. Even the 1st gen Mazda 3s are still pretty good looking and their styling cues are still somewhat relevant. The 3 is a car that's easy to live with and won't look dreadful in 10 years.

I feel like I am one of the only people left who doesn't feel the need for a shit ton of additional gadgets in my car. An Aux cord, a CD player, heating and air conditioning and airbags are all I need. I will be focused on DRIVING, not editing my Spotify playlist. You think this is a deal breaker? look at the base model Toyota 86. The interior resembles that of a 2008 Jeep, and not so much as a single disc CD player...and it is still a JOY to drive on a winding back road.

@ hockeyrocker117 a USB slot for the Flash stick is really all you need. Just transfer all your music to it. But i still agree with everyone tho that for this time period there is no excuse for them not to have some of the most common stuff like Apple Carplay and Bigger screen. Soft touch crap is useless to me. I don't see why that has become such a big deal for people these days.
@bvedant6 жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly Carplay is nothing great. My parents' new CR-V has it and I probably used it for a couple days max and then just reverted back to BT because it was way less of a hassle. Also I'm on iOS beta so a lot of the bugs / glitches from the OS are carried over to the infotainment

Hi Sofyan, congrasts for the review !!!! I've always had a doubt ... Do you think that this car can compete with a BMW 1 series/Audi A3 or MB A Class? .... I think that it could ... regards from Chile.-

Francisco Javier Gamio Opazo Hi Francisco, I just traded a BMW 125i Coupe for a Mazda3 SP25GT Hatch here in Australia, so I'm in a good position to answer your question. In short, I have no regrets changing to the Mazda. The Mazda is just as well made and is every bit as enjoyable to drive. In fact, it's more comfortable as a daily driver. Don't buy an Audi, you'll regret it. Nice cars to drive but with terrible reliability. I posted an earlier comment here about my next door neighbour's Audi A3 1.8T. Btw, I love Chile. I have two nieces who live in Rangue, just south of Santiago.

Crosshead1 thanks for your reply!!! I have right now a 2015 Mazda6 2.5 GT that I love but I want a car a little more small and my first option is clearly a Mazda3 like yours... And I would never spend a dollar on a car from VW Group.... Once again thanks for your reply and your relatives lives near to me since Im in Santiago (Providencia). Regards my friend.

No it looks like a Mazda. look at the previous generation Mazdas, you can see the similarities
@jasonharris9967 жыл бұрын
This generation of the 3 is entirely different looking than past generations, especially the 2nd gen with its smiley face and cheap interior. This 3 reminds me of when the 3 was first introduced in 2004, with looks and driving dynamics far ahead of its competitors. The competition is catching up, but I credit Mazda for shaking up the economy car segment and still beating out most cars in its class.

Hi man, Im a big fan of ur reviews, please help me with this: which has the better handling, Mazda 3 or Focus ST? I dnt care much about the motor differences cuz it would be my daily commuter in town with a lot of traffic. And over all which one would u recommend me? Thanks a lot

Is it also good for occasional long distance driving?
@dodg16777 жыл бұрын
You always seem to review the manual transmission if available. Most of us are going to go for an automatic. Maybe it's more "fun" but not in city traffic or perhaps anywhere except winding country roads and the interstate system.
@TLJournal6 жыл бұрын
Ken Dodge Very few if any other reviwers show the manual versions. For us manual drivers, it's a blessing that Sofyan doesn't forget we exist.
