I think Mr. Regular needs some context here. In 2014 when Mazda was selling this, the Toyota Corolla was still rocking a 4 SPEED AUTO and the Civic of the time had panel gaps so wide it sparked a national outcry when a young boy died after falling in to one and being stuck for 8 days while rescuers attempted and ultimately failed to save him. Meanwhile, Ford was in the middle of laying the groundwork for their power shift lawsuit and VW was busy lying to federal regulators. Chevy? Who gives a fuck what Chevy was doing. Yep, In 2014 this was objectively the best commuter on sale.

In 2014 chevy was making cruzes that came with faulty turbos that would crack right around 80-100 thousand km. After mine cracked on the 400 driving home from toronto and the transmission stopped switching gears I bought a 6 speed mazda 3. So chevy was just making cars deigned to break once the warranty was almost up

Freaking love this car. Fun little commuter than makes you *feel* fast even when you're not, fun to toss around corners, feels super luxurious for the price point, and still comfortably gets 40+mpg on road trips. Not to mention I'm hitting 170k on my 2014 without a single hiccup. Headlights/Brakes/Oil+Filters/Air Filters. That's. It. 170k miles and not a single check engine light yet.

@@jacobrzeszewski6527 if you’re considering the 2014-20whatever generation, just don’t. Please don’t. It doesn’t matter how you drive it, it’s not a “fun little commuter”, it’s just a piece of shit. Dead steering, gutless, geared horribly, clutch feels terrible, shifting feels uncharacteristic. Just stop listening to the circle jerkers talking about “fun to drive”. I daily one of these turds and can tell you… but bear in mind I drive the poverty spec. Still the same car though. Now, reliability… flawless. Literally flawless. 100k miles. Now the new generation I can’t speak on in terms of driving feeling. But based on interior looks and driving position/melding of interior design, I’d consider it.

@@jonathanseibert761 I just want a reliable and predictable car that gets good fuel economy and isn’t stupidly complicated, and is capable of being reifed on every once in a while on a country road. Also, I’m a die on the hill of stick shifts man. I don’t want to deal with the increased complexity of a turbo or automatic. I wanted an Impreza Sport but my order got delayed dangerously close to the end of production for the manual. So the Mazda 3 Hatch is just a fallback option.

I like my auto 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2L. Especially after finding the switch that clicks when you have the accelerator down what feels like all the way, then you push harder until it clicks. It's the "screw economy it's 2nd gear time" button.
@rccsrgaming6987
@rccsrgaming6987 5 жыл бұрын
kloroformd the manual 2015 doesn’t come with a switch. If you’re in 6th going 40mph. You can bounce on the throttle just like the video
@mrb5217
@mrb5217 5 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: that switch is nothing more than a dummy tactile switch for you to feel with your foot and act as a "soft stop" until you mash it. When you push the switch down, it kicks down the transmission based on accelerator position, not the actual clicking switch. There are no wires attached to it.
@BeesonsCars
@BeesonsCars 5 жыл бұрын
mrb5217 are you sure? Because on my car (albeit a Mercedes) the kickdown switch does have a sensor and shows up on my scanner. When you floor it to the button it tells the car to downshift to the lowest gear. But 100% throttle is still accessible without the kickdown switch.
@mrb5217
@mrb5217 5 жыл бұрын
@@BeesonsCars I had to look hard to remember where I read this, but from the service manual mazda states: The kickdown switch is only a measure of the kickdown. An electrical signal is not transmitted by the kickdown switch turning on/off, and vehicle control is not affected. Additionally they reference several times that the kickdown range is sensed by the accelerator pedal position sensor.

The incredible thing with this era of the Mazda 3 is while the manual had its flaws as shown here, the 6 speed automatic is literally one of the best transmissions ever put in a commuter car which made it a joy to drive. Shockingly if I had to review how good this car is I might’ve actually got the automatic one because it’s gearing makes it much more fun to drive.
@vadim6385
@vadim6385 6 ай бұрын
Shhh, don't tell it to the mAnUaL fanboys. Seriously, it's like VW, where the manual transmission doesn't do the car any favors. But unlike VW with the DSG, the Mazda transmissions are actually reliable. So there's even no reliability advantage for the manual transmission. And actually, I heard that in some Japanese cars, the manual is actually LESS reliable than the automatic. Maybe it's due to the fact that in their home market, automatic is king, and manual is an afterthought for many cars.

I just got a 2013 Mazda CX-5. Imagine the same engine hauling around an extra 500lbs. It's an automatic, but it's not a CVT. Mazda uses a 6 speed automatic with fake manual shifting so you can access the torque that only exists in the first few gears without the computer fighting you for better gas mileage. I think the only reason it has that torque at all is because of the high compression ratio (which is what Skyactiv is all about). The good thing about the CX-5 is that it's probably the only SUV I've ever encountered that drives like a car. Mazda decided to forego all of the soft suspension and mushy steering responsiveness of a typical SUV so you can take a turn at more than ten miles per hour without feeling like you're going to roll over and die. It's basically a thicc hatchback that got a lift kit but didn't get the engine to compensate for its extra girth.

It's not a matter of thinking you're too cool for a Corolla. It's the fact the Corolla isn't great and you can get other reliable cars that are better to drive, more efficient, or bigger. So why go with the Corolla other than being a Toyota fanboy?

What is also important - Toyota would have high resale value if you want to buy used due to their reputation. While reliable cars that don't have that sort of reputation will cost a lot cheaper on the used market.

Well either vast majority of reviewers world wide ( even German) are wrong or RCR team generally does not like Mazda brand, i suspect dislike based on a guilt by associaton, because both 3 and 2 are considered second to none in respectibe classes when it comes to handling and manuals. @@noredcr I've driven quite a few cars of different types and I've always found mine to be very peppy and fast in comparison. It's a 2.5L with 6 speed manual transmission. At 167 HP and 167 lbs/ft of torque it can pull it's weight around very quickly for its kind. Compared to other similar cars I drove like the civic and Lancer or Impreza, the 3 stands way out. It's so much more fun to drive.

@ I have the 2.0 and the 6 speed and I do think there is a lot more difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 in performance than just the few extra hp. The 2.0 is like he said, very tame and well, commuter car like. I love the car and definitely recommend it but it really doesn't deserve the super sporty idea people seem to associate with it. It drives about the same as my old Jetta and my 190, handles good but just very mild and tame. The 2.5 though in some ways feels completely different imo

I have this exact trim (2.0L i-touring) and it gets out of its way fine. Of course you aren’t going to accelerate quickly in 6th, but if you need power on the highway downshift to 3rd and it’ll pass with no issues.

You absolutely nailed the throttle response. You really have to work with and anticipate what it wants to do. The confuser what being a box of 1's and 0's doesn't know if that stab on the gas is a drag race or trying to make an unprotected left. The 6 spd auto certainly is thrifty but 6th is definitely for cruising at 80 all day.

About a year ago I shopped the Mazda 3 and 6, thinking I was going to get a "regular" car, wanted one with a manual(ended up in a 7 year old pickup that cost as much as a brand new 3 lol). IMO the 6 is the Mazda to get, drives EXACTLY like a 3, for better or worse. IE tossable chassis/good handling, kind of noisy, slick shifter, meh power, but you get a much bigger back seat, bigger trunk, a better looking dash/gauge package, and IMO its a better looking car. So if you're looking at a 3, go buy a 6, its basically a bigger, better version of the 3 for not much more $$$$
@97I30T
@97I30T 5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. The 6 is a much nicer car than the 3, at least the 2014-2018 3s, not sure about the all new body style, and in many cases the 6 only costs $1-2 grand more than a comparably equipped 3 and there's only a marginal penalty in fuel efficiency. Unless you just have to have a hatchback the 6 is a way nicer car than the 3.

Brings back memories... I had a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan automatic. A practical car with no torque is \the best description for it. Great commuter car with a little more edge in the aesthetic department than your typical Corolla or Civic. The automatic came with a "manual" mode in the +/- configuration via shift lever. It had no tachometer. That's one thing that really annoyed me. It reminds me of a simpler time... driving my girlfriend at the time around, blissfully young, pre-twenties. I wish I was nicer to the car. I was sharing it with my sister at the time and didn't realize some of my most memorable moments would happen with that very car.

I had a '12 Mazda 3. Drove it 80k before selling it for a larger family car. It taught me three things: 1. A slow commuter could be genuinely fun to drive, 2. An automatic transmission with manual shift could genuinely fun to operate, and 3. A Mazda could be more reliable and get better gas mileage than a Honda Accord. Should have gotten a 6.

I've had my 2008 Mazda 3 i touring, 4 speed auto for almost 12 years now. I bought it when I wasn't a car enthusiast, and it has been a great reliable car. A few years ago, after getting into cars I started using the pull-to-upshift manual mode, and later became an enthusiast. I later learned to drive stick, and now have a miata. But I have to say, the Mazda 3 was my gateway car into spirited driving. I rev it up to 6k rpm daily, and if I want it to pick up any kind of speed, I it's in 2nd gear. If I'm on the highway and I want to pick up speed it's in 3rd. There is no pull in 4th. 1st can take you from 0-45 mph in about 5 seconds. It never pulls hard but it can go fast and keep pulling if you want it to. 2nd gear is a pretty awesome experience on back roads, and 3rd gear on the highway can take you as fast as you'll ever need to go. If I'm really in a hurry, I'll only shift up to 3rd gear. Full throttle actually does something only when the revs are above 4.5k. The car responds well to being driven hard. For that, it's pretty special.
