I think Mr. Regular needs some context here. In 2014 when Mazda was selling this, the Toyota Corolla was still rocking a 4 SPEED AUTO and the Civic of the time had panel gaps so wide it sparked a national outcry when a young boy died after falling in to one and being stuck for 8 days while rescuers attempted and ultimately failed to save him. Meanwhile, Ford was in the middle of laying the groundwork for their power shift lawsuit and VW was busy lying to federal regulators. Chevy? Who gives a fuck what Chevy was doing. Yep, In 2014 this was objectively the best commuter on sale.
@halloweengrl4205 жыл бұрын
In 2014 chevy was making cruzes that came with faulty turbos that would crack right around 80-100 thousand km. After mine cracked on the 400 driving home from toronto and the transmission stopped switching gears I bought a 6 speed mazda 3. So chevy was just making cars deigned to break once the warranty was almost up

@avinmaharaj8483 Жыл бұрын
The incredible thing with this era of the Mazda 3 is while the manual had its flaws as shown here, the 6 speed automatic is literally one of the best transmissions ever put in a commuter car which made it a joy to drive. Shockingly if I had to review how good this car is I might’ve actually got the automatic one because it’s gearing makes it much more fun to drive.
@vadim638511 ай бұрын
Shhh, don't tell it to the mAnUaL fanboys. Seriously, it's like VW, where the manual transmission doesn't do the car any favors. But unlike VW with the DSG, the Mazda transmissions are actually reliable. So there's even no reliability advantage for the manual transmission. And actually, I heard that in some Japanese cars, the manual is actually LESS reliable than the automatic. Maybe it's due to the fact that in their home market, automatic is king, and manual is an afterthought for many cars.
@kloroformd5 жыл бұрын
I like my auto 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2L. Especially after finding the switch that clicks when you have the accelerator down what feels like all the way, then you push harder until it clicks. It's the "screw economy it's 2nd gear time" button.
@rccsrgaming69875 жыл бұрын
kloroformd the manual 2015 doesn’t come with a switch. If you’re in 6th going 40mph. You can bounce on the throttle just like the video
@mrb52175 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: that switch is nothing more than a dummy tactile switch for you to feel with your foot and act as a "soft stop" until you mash it. When you push the switch down, it kicks down the transmission based on accelerator position, not the actual clicking switch. There are no wires attached to it.
@BeesonsCars5 жыл бұрын
mrb5217 are you sure? Because on my car (albeit a Mercedes) the kickdown switch does have a sensor and shows up on my scanner. When you floor it to the button it tells the car to downshift to the lowest gear. But 100% throttle is still accessible without the kickdown switch.
@mrb52175 жыл бұрын
@@BeesonsCars I had to look hard to remember where I read this, but from the service manual mazda states: The kickdown switch is only a measure of the kickdown. An electrical signal is not transmitted by the kickdown switch turning on/off, and vehicle control is not affected. Additionally they reference several times that the kickdown range is sensed by the accelerator pedal position sensor.

I just got a 2013 Mazda CX-5. Imagine the same engine hauling around an extra 500lbs. It's an automatic, but it's not a CVT. Mazda uses a 6 speed automatic with fake manual shifting so you can access the torque that only exists in the first few gears without the computer fighting you for better gas mileage. I think the only reason it has that torque at all is because of the high compression ratio (which is what Skyactiv is all about). The good thing about the CX-5 is that it's probably the only SUV I've ever encountered that drives like a car. Mazda decided to forego all of the soft suspension and mushy steering responsiveness of a typical SUV so you can take a turn at more than ten miles per hour without feeling like you're going to roll over and die. It's basically a thicc hatchback that got a lift kit but didn't get the engine to compensate for its extra girth.
@MJorgy52 жыл бұрын
Skyactive is also about a seriously refined valve train that allows the engine to switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles to varying degrees. Otto cycle for acceleration and Atkinson cycle for excellent efficiency and engine longevity.

I had a '12 Mazda 3. Drove it 80k before selling it for a larger family car. It taught me three things: 1. A slow commuter could be genuinely fun to drive, 2. An automatic transmission with manual shift could genuinely fun to operate, and 3. A Mazda could be more reliable and get better gas mileage than a Honda Accord. Should have gotten a 6.

Mr Regular: drives a 2L economy car with an extremely tall 6th gear for gas mileage and an electronic throttle that, like most do, ignore inputs that would lug the engine as an engine protection measure. Gets on the freeway. Goes the speed limit. Revs at or below 2000. Floors it. "huh! It doesn't do anything!"... Dude. It'll move. It's a manual Mazda. Kick it down a few gears. Of course it won't knock your socks off but flooring it will actually work then.

If he had tested a 2.5 it would have been a much different review. Some people say the difference between the 2.0 and 2.5 is "subtle." Those people are idiots. The 2.5 pulls. Car gets up to 45-50 shockingly fast. Past that it lacks a little, but I'd race just about anything to 45, it's got more low end torque than anything in the segment. Still.

@ChefBoyarDEEZАй бұрын
There's no need to go full throttle in these cars. The fly by wire pedal is set up that half throttle is full throttle. Also, the skyactiv 2.0l does not like low RPm. It likes to live above 3k, and it keeps the carbon build up on the valves down. Plus add an intake and an exhaust on these 2.0L and drivability is way better. Not much faster but it let's the engine breathe just enough to give her a lot of zip, highway passing and going up hills is much easier, alot less shifting, and even getting into it you'll get better gas mileage. Never forget Mazda is a sports car company and likes to make everything sporty. And the skyactiv line is Mazda trying to save the combustion engine. I would love to have the new 2.5T engine, that would be fun and still awesome gas mileage.

Brings back memories... I had a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan automatic. A practical car with no torque is \the best description for it. Great commuter car with a little more edge in the aesthetic department than your typical Corolla or Civic. The automatic came with a "manual" mode in the +/- configuration via shift lever. It had no tachometer. That's one thing that really annoyed me. It reminds me of a simpler time... driving my girlfriend at the time around, blissfully young, pre-twenties. I wish I was nicer to the car. I was sharing it with my sister at the time and didn't realize some of my most memorable moments would happen with that very car.

About a year ago I shopped the Mazda 3 and 6, thinking I was going to get a "regular" car, wanted one with a manual(ended up in a 7 year old pickup that cost as much as a brand new 3 lol). IMO the 6 is the Mazda to get, drives EXACTLY like a 3, for better or worse. IE tossable chassis/good handling, kind of noisy, slick shifter, meh power, but you get a much bigger back seat, bigger trunk, a better looking dash/gauge package, and IMO its a better looking car. So if you're looking at a 3, go buy a 6, its basically a bigger, better version of the 3 for not much more $$$$
@97I30T5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. The 6 is a much nicer car than the 3, at least the 2014-2018 3s, not sure about the all new body style, and in many cases the 6 only costs $1-2 grand more than a comparably equipped 3 and there's only a marginal penalty in fuel efficiency. Unless you just have to have a hatchback the 6 is a way nicer car than the 3.

This channel is amazing! So on the Mazda 3, I have a tHeOrY: I think they overengineered the engines a bit, with their dual overhead cams and direct injection, expecting the JDM crowd to pour aftermarket upgrades into the platform. But they DID NOT, because of course not. They were never going to have the huge market saturation of Toyotas and Hondas, which is what allows such communities. BUT they have recently finally found a bit of an aftermarket niche... way too late of course, but it's there. People found out you CAN turbo and supercharge the Skyactiv engines, and discovered that the car is so overengineered that 50% increases in power makes the engine and drivetrain yawn and shrug their shoulders, like "whatever dude." These tiny communities are like those guys who tell you about some esoteric anime which is actually SO GOOD YOU NEED TO WATCH IT, and like maybe? but is it really worth the extra effort? (but i own one and love it and im one of those guys but at least i have self-recognition alright)

Those are the same exact technologies I had in my 2016 Ford Focus. I replaced it with a 2014 Mazda 3. Both had very reliable engines. Only I mistaked myself into the DCT with the Focus. But I made it work until the day I tragically totaled it. And Mazda's handling is superb.

@@97I30T While this is all exactly correct, that doesn't mean it's good, which is what Regular was getting at. This is a guy who loves strictly analog, all metal cars.
