Probably the unboxing of the MREs, the preparation of said MREs and the way Steve lays them out nicely on the tray, his voice and the way he says "Nice!", and maybe the satisfaction of him consuming the food may be the reasons why we love these videos.

This is my favorite channel. I discovered it 5 years ago and sometimes we drift apart, but like a good friend, we could stay up until 4am catching up. I don’t even want to buy an MRE because I feel like I’ve had them all. This guy needs to be on food network for like a camping food show. I bought one of these for a 7 days hiking/camping trip. Was eating 2 packages a day plus a freeze dried meal aiming for about 3000 cals a day. Each day included a minimum of 5 hours of hiking (2 days were 10 hours). I chose this for its convenience and good reviews. The coffee was really bland and would require the coco powder to get mixed in it to be enjoyable. By the end of the week the meals got really old and repetitive with is bland meats and beans everywhere but overall it was worth it. I would snack on the breads and desert during the hike and eat the main entrees once I would get to the camp site. A very easy and convenient way of getting those calories in. The self heating packets really came in handy since there was a fire ban and boiling the packets in water would take away time/energy from other activities. No constipation what so ever. Would consider purchasing again.

I remember volunteering at the NRG center in Houston during Hurricane Harvey; that’s where I learned about MREs. Even though they served chicken sandwiches from Chick-Fil-a and Raising Caines and the MREs were absolutely flavorless, I always ate the MREs since they were fun to make using the flame less ration heater. Edit: also brown sugar pop tarts

I remember trying my first MREs with my dad. He was a Korean war vet and always had some "just in case". Excellent job as always.

My uncle is in the reserves and he used to bring home surplus. I don't know what they were before the MRE's we know today, but he used to bring home these items that were not packaged together. I had the spaghetti and meatballs, chili, and I loved the chocolate wafers. Funny, my favorite of them all was the fruit cake. Years later, he brought back the MRE's. They only had a few weeks left before they met their recommended shelf life. I wanted to keep them as emergency food, but ended up just eating them. They were great! My favorite were the cocoa powder. My uncle distributed them to my cousins and I went after every pouch of cocoa powder. The cocoa powder smelled and tastes better than what you can buy at the store. For years I was looking for their equivalent in the supermarket and I found them at Trader Joe's one time, but they stopped selling them. The closest I get are from Ghirardelli. Didn't realize that the MRE had some really high quality cocoa. I wish I still had them. I was watching some documentary and saw these guys put the cocoa powder in the crackers, add hot water, cream, and coffee. They made chocolate bread pudding. DAMN... I wish I had some. Then I realized the military version were very very high in calories and I remember opening one for every meal.

@Dylan Wormuth, When I was active we used to mix some of the Cocoa Beverage Powder, Coffee Powder, Sugar, & Creamer, then add just enough water to make a paste and spread it on a piece of the inside of the mre bag. It would dry out and make what we used to call MRE Fudge.

They call it a "Cadillac" in jail/prison... Of course, you can just mix some instant coffee and hot chocolate mix at home and get the same thing... I would reccomend adding a bit of creamer (or milk) and a single packet of sugar.
@tennesseewaterfowler56136 жыл бұрын
If you mix two creamer packs, hot cocoa pack, and two packages of sugar, put it in your canteen cup, put it on the side of a fire and in like 15-20 minutes you have a brownie

I've watched a few of these in a row now. Started with some 70+ year old biscuits, a couple hard candies, one of which was liquified...into a Vietnam set you couldn't really mess with as the cheese was rancid and the pecan cake was no good either, straight into the newer plastic contained MRE's as we see here in this 3 pack. I've already subscribed, and now I'm on Amazon browsing MRE's...I'm hungry :D Interesting to see all these. I'm wondering if someone will be doing the same thing to these new MRE's in 2085 and beyond like you've done with some of the older rations. I can already imagine them crinkling the plastic wrappings and finding joy in the old-school, low tech heating elements. Very cool videos, thanks!
