During my time (98-99) as a drafty in the french air force i had twice the opportunity to eat one of those RCIR. Prior to that i was always on the impression that military rations were all made of corned beef in a tin because of all the movies i saw as a kid. So 1st time during boot camp, we got one RCIP for two at lunch. For me what a surprise upon openning it to find off the shelves items, more so that the one shown here. All items were branded just like they are even today in a super market : For tissue paper a pack of lotus that looks like it was taken off the 10 pack bundle my mother kept in the bathroom. Chocolate bar was the same "Poulain" bar you'd find in a bakery or candy store. The two main course we had to heat outside on the tablet stove had the brand name, "Fleury Michon", written on the top and were just the same menu and packaging ( the same one you see on the video) minus the pictured cardboard that surround the tin i used to eat as a student just the month prior. The best was the "mont blanc" vanilla or chocolate cream. Miam! What we did not use for lunch we divided and kept as snacks. It is true even the army in france take the food seriously. I was fortunate enough to be posted at what is now named the "hexagon", back then base number 117. We would sart every week with a number of points on a magnetic card with which we pay for our meal at the mess. There was enough points added each day that we always had some spare at the end of the week that if not used would be forfeit upon reset the next monday. We enlisted could choose beetween 4 mess, each with its own speciality. One had a selection of pizza and pasta, the other one was more french cuisine and i don't remember what the other offered, just that on friday one had lobster on the menu! (you still had to reserved it in advance). We could only use our spare points to buy a nice bottle of wine under the supervision of an NCO, and ours (MSGT Garcia - with his latin southwest accent - i kidd you not) was nice enough to indulge us after a hard week of work or a job well done. And that does not take into account the unit pantry and liquor cabinet that we maintained thanks to the mess crew and the base "grey market" ;). My last day was one of those occasion when we openned it and had some champagne from the 4* general cellar (contribution after an unordinary job he asked us to perform )! Suffise to say that upon the end of my time i had taken a little bit of weight (5kgs/10-11 pounds!) So yeah, french soldiers are well fed with the most gourmet (almost 3* Michelin) food our taxes can buy!

I listened to a Lot of retired Vets from WWII when I was a Teen ( worked weekends at a retirement home)one guy used to love telling me stories . here's what I can remember of the top of my head. We were standing in the chow line they set up on the side of the road .it was late Summer early fall and Poring rain, I could tell that there was going to be a push in the morning , they always hand out hot chow then, the Cooks had set up some garbage cans with boiling water and had just put the cans of meat and other things in them . as we passed on line they would fish out a can and give you some bread or crackers and Coffee so strong it could be used as battery acid. at least it was Hot food.

Tip for the Cheese fondue (love the show): Dude, you're supposed to melt the cheese using the stove. You also have to use the salty crackers and dip them into the melting cheese! Trust me, it'll make the cheese come alive. I strongly suggest you try again and melt the cheese first, until it becomes a little bit liquid but not too much. Then stick the salty crackers and ...Voilà! Not melting the cheese is to a French person, as is putting yorkshire puddings for dessert to an English person.

You know this reminds me of a story a buddy of mine once told me. He was in the US Army's Berlin Brigade, back when there still was a Berlin Brigade, you know, before the wall came down. Anyway, he got a chance to do some training maneuvers with the French Foreign Legion, as the Americans are tucking into their MREs, these Legioneirs got waiters setting up tables out there with like white table cloths, and china, wine, like all that shit. Needless to say the Americans were dumbfounded. My buddy asked the obvious, "WTF?" And the Legioneir told him, "We can eat that shit (pointing at his MRE) when we have to, like in the field for real, on deployment, but why eat like that when you can have better." Now think about that for a second. That, possibly the best MRE you've ever had, to them that's the shit food that you have to eat in the field. Now imagine what they eat every day.

Ordered my first French RCIR and tried it out this week, not the same menu as Steve has here, mine was Menu 13. Overall for a military ration it was very impressive. The main dishes heat up very nicely & were delicious especially the Pasta a la Cabonara, the coffee if you mix both packets with the sugar is really good, especially for instant. The rice pudding desert was delightful and I whole heartily agree that the "Fruit Jelly bar" might be one of the highlights of these rations, seriously they are Top notch! The only down side were the biscuits, some were slightly stale while some were still fresh. At the end of the day if you're intrigued by rations and can find one of these, give it a try!

Not really surprising as Napoleon pioneered tinned food. An army marches on its stomach. You would be surprised how many calories a soldier can burn through in a day. Also don't forget this might be the only good thing that happens to you all day. These are the best rations I have seen so far. U.K. Ones were always good. They are mostly in cans and can be eaten cold. While many countries have almost all of it freeze dried or dehydrated.

My father was a French para that served in Algeria, so we are talking 1958. Breakfast was a bowl of coffee with bread. Rations consisted of bully beef and sardines with cigarettes. Didn't have much to say about the quality of the food in the field. When there was leave and the soldiers could go to Algiers, the first stop was the restaurants (he loved couscous dishes) and then the brothels.
