2017 Mini Cooper Clubman Brake Sensor Replacement & Reset

When you change rear pads on these, is there a specific way to get the piston back in the caliper? A friend reckens you need to do it via the ECU and not the traditional push the piston back into the caliper

I remove brake fluid cap and manually push piston back in. Cheers
