Now that we’ve driven 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S - the 982 - with 350 HP, MotoMan tries the more pedestrian version - the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster - with a measly 300 HP from it’s turbo flat four. Along the way, MotoMan demonstrates more power does not always equal better driving dynamics . . .

Very entertaining and informative video. I now drive a Challenger SRT with 485 hp. I test drove both the 718 S and non S. The S was just incredible and really if you will not track the car, is just too much power for the street. Equivalent to the Challenger. As a 66 yr of age guy, my hp needs are declining and thus find the non S will do just fine.

Purchased a Boxster S after owning a string of Boxsters including manual, tiptronic and PDK. I do not race the car, but live in Florida where top down driving is essential. The decision to go to the S was based on how well the normal mode matched with the PDK for ordinary driving. This is mostly when each of us do, especially with wives that don't appreciate being thrown into every corner. However, the car becomes a beast driving in sports mode and using the paddle shifters to determine the gear. The flat torque urge makes it feel somewhat like my Tesla since they are both great off the line. Rule one with either car is to position the car as first in line at any red light as in a blink of an eye you are about a block ahead of everything by the time you arrive up to cruising speed. I think that too much exhaust noise ruins ones enjoyment of the sound system, but is enjoyable when in beast mode.

I can't tell you what I "would buy" but I can tell you what I DID buy! After waiting over 3 months, I took delivery on my base model boxter about a month ago. The guards red color you drove seemed a little too "orangie" to me so I shelled out another $2,500 to get the deeper looking "Carmine Red". The interior is Agate grey. A nice combination of grey and brown. Really unique. I hemmed and hawed about springing for full leather ($2,500 upgrade). Finally came to the realization that a car like this MUST have leather interior. Sweeeet. I'm 6-1 and the cockpit fits like a glove. Got an easy 2 or 3" clearance above my head and the car is surprisingly comfortable when at cruising speed. OK so how does it drive? O. M. G. Not meaning to imply I have any trouble in this area, but if anyone reading this has issues with E.D., this is the cure. Totally got the 6 speed manual. I wanted to DRIVE the car, not merely "steer" it. Upgrading to the "S" would have set me back another 12K. Would I have welcomed the extra power? Sure, but I don't think it would have been justified. To me, it's not about screaming down the highway doing 140 MPH. The thing I love is taking turns waaaaaaay faster than I ever could have with another car. The thing drives like it's on rails. When I feel my body pressing into the door panel while making a really tight right, the adrelalin rush is pure nirvana. For the sheer "fun to drive" aspect (and isn't that why we're all here?), this car has it in spades.

It’s worthwhile getting the S: suspension is firmer for less body roll, bigger brakes and tires, it’s not just the power increase.

Glad I bought my 981 Boxster GTS after watching that review when you did it...that exhaust note blew my mind. I also drove the new 718 S with sport exhaust but when I put my foot into that flat 6 and heard that exhaust note it was all over. I snapped up one of the last loaded 2016 Boxster GTS's I could find in dealer inventory as it is destined to be a classic. Thank you Moto-MAN!!!

I have been fortunate enough to recently go through the process of choosing a third car to the stable. We currently have an Audi S6 (wife's) and a Toyota 4Runner (SUV used for dogs, bikes, kayaks, etc...). A few years back I acquired a JCW Mini to have as a third car and daily driver for me. It was giggle fun but lacked when it came to providing adequate satisfaction on weekend jaunts and canyon carving. Also, the suspension was too harsh and it wasn't the easiest to get around slower cars in the mountains. My goal was to find something that I could drive daily to work, take weekend trips in the mountains with my wife , and do an occasional track day. Because most of the car’s time would be driving on public roads, I really wanted to avoid a motor which you need to have on boil to enjoy. Low end torque is a plus. With a budget of just over $80k, I highly considered the following: Merc C63 AMG Coupe, BMW M4 Comp Pack, Corvette Grand Sport, Jag F-Type, BMW M2, and 718 Cayman S. Never. I repeat, never did I expect to be able to shop for such a vechile. The two months searching, testing, and reviewing reviews (thank you MotoMan TV for your informative reviews!) have been a blast! Spoiler, the end choice was a 718 Cayman S which I placed a deposit on the first week of March of 2017. As of now, the car is being loaded on the boat in Emden and should be here and ready to pick up by the end of June. I can’t wait! My take? The Merc was gorgeous and sounded great. But, it’s too porky and not as nimble as I’d like. But, oh that sound! The Bimmer nearly won me over as I’m a long-time M fan and thought I’d always have one. But, compared to the Cayman, the M4 felt too big. I didn’t feel as one with it as I did the Cayman. I’m sure the Grand Sport is a wonderful car. But, despite visiting four different dealers, I couldn’t PAY to get a test drive in one. This is not because they were selling them like hot cakes and didn’t have any in stock. One dealer had 12… that’s 12 Grand Sports in stock and still said, “nope” to a test drive request. While each dealer had its own version of why test drive were not provided (not even as a passenger), the common theme is they can sell the things w/o providing test drives. Good for them. And, besides, the Vette’s looks are a bit too ostentatious for me and it felt like an off-the-rack suit compared to the Cayman’s custom suit feel when seated inside the showroom. The F Type is fantastic. But, it’s starting to get a little long in the tooth, didn’t feel as well as the Cayman in terms of driving dynamics and fit/finish. And, the big one, there is zero room to transport luggage for long weekend trips. The M2 seems fun and a bargain. But, they are all pre-sold at MSRP (or higher) and there are none around me to test drive. That left me with the Cayman S. Does the sound suck? No. Is it a great sound? No. Is it a good sound? Yes. Does the car’s other attributes make it for me given all of my choices? Heck yes! In case you're thinking, "why didn't he consider a well sorted used previous gen Cayman S?" I did. But, that motor needs to be at 5K plus to get the most out of it (which, coincidentally, is when the car starts to make it's glorious sounds). At the end of the day, driving dynamics and torque won over sound.

I bought the lava orange basic with 300Hp . My first Porsche i am old school 6 speed manual type. I love this machine. When the road is damp and that rear moves out sooo nice it puts a smile on my face. The Mrs doesn't even flinch in a tight turn "no too roll fell" I have had a few special machines in my day but this gets a thumbs up almost every day I take it out.

In the months August to September I decided between a Cayman GTS with 1 previous owner with few miles on it and a new 718 Cayman S. I started out testing the the 718 Boxster S and it felt very fast but I did not like the sound of the engine and the exhaust. The Cayman GTS engine and exhaust sound was everything it were built up in my head to be, even with the flaps closed it were spine tingling. But it felt plenty slower. I can see how the difference would probably be smaller on a track where you can push close to redline all the time. Late September the local dealer finally got a tester 718 Cayman S with sports exhaust and after a 2 hour test drive I were sold. The sounds in the naturally aspirated flat 6 GTS is of course still a lot better, a new exhaust will not change the sound of the engine. But the difference from the sports exhaust in the 718 Cayman S is a lot bigger than in the GTS. It gets a lot louder and pops very nicely when the throttle is closed, even on lower speeds. Placed the order Tuesday after the Saturday test-drive and I am now waiting for what feels like an eternity until week 2 when delivery is planed. Since I am new to Porsche and I do not have the same affinity to the flat 6s beautiful sound. But I absolutely understand why fans of the flat 6 sees the change as a deal-breaker, that sound is pitch perfect. Since even for me as a first time Porsche (future, still only down-payment) it added close to a month of extra time before I placed my order. I feel very good about the order but when you mention the 718 GTS here it makes me a bit concerned that in 1 years time Porsche will do something drastic with it.

As a previous Porsche Boxster owner (2009), my Porsche was incredibly engaging to drive and top down, it was magical. The Sapphire Blue Metallic with beige leather interior was a great combo. The flat-6 was the cherry on the top at higher RPM. I'll buy another Boxster, but it will have to be the 6, just for the sound. For new, the Alfa Romeo 4C or Lotus is calling my name; unless at 6'4" tall I can't fit.

Hi. I owned a 2005 Boxster base for 10 years. Just bought a 2017 Base Boxster 718. No comparison to quickness and torque. These new 4 cylinder turbos are beautiful. Every comment about not as good as old 6 is probably written by someone with limited time behind the wheel of both. The new seven 18 is a winner, especially with exhaust package in sport mode.

The wife and I recently drove into a Porsche dealership in S CA and took a test drive in a 2017 Boxster and loved it but felt it was lacking power. The 2.0 engine just is too easy to over rev and it was also a manual transmission. The dealership had a Red Boxster S with PDK in back that wasn't quite ready for public viewing but we fell in love and bought it without even a test drive. We love it and had no idea how lucky we were buy this car with absolutely no research. Never thought of myself as Porsche owner but I love everything about the car. Yes, it might be nice to hear a little more growl from the pipes but this car is fast, tons of fun to drive and easy to handle. I want to go out and but another one because this is now the wife's daily driver so I only get to drive it on weekends.

Chose and drive the Boxster in Guards red with black and tan interior. Also, despite the fact that I have always had manual sports cars I chose the PDK on this one and I am very pleased with it- it doesn’t take anything away from the driving experience. Agreed, it doesn’t sound like a flat six but I don’t care.

Great review and very entertaining video, thank you !!. I will have real soon 718 S Boxster and I have chosen the S version over the non S because more power of course and that the the turbo has the same variable geometry technology than the new 911, Non S version lacks of it. I am new to the brand and new to the old 6 cylinder aspirated higher pitched sound engine as well. Can say that it is great, but I have also say that 718 sounds good to me, no complain at all. I drive a BMW 535Xi Xdrive. To the question, how could a 2.5 litter displacement engine has more power?..... well, two turbos like the 911 and more pressure, the current turbo works at very low one and there is plenty of space even for aftermarket improvements on that front. I guess that Porsche engineer will say something similar to that. On a last note, a four cylinder will never have the six cylinder sound, so better get used to it. Cheers !

I drive a Lotus Elise. If I were to buy one of these 718's it would be the Cayman S manual. I would however not balk at the standard Cayman. Base Cayman in Graphite Blue metallic and 20" Boxster wheels, manual transmission of course. I would add power sports seats with memory, premium package, sport tail pipes, extended range tank, Bose system and Porsche Connect for a total of $63k. I would likely have the most basic 718 on the road but would get the essence of the driving experience and the creature comforts that would make a long trip enjoyable and have a car that I could own for the next 10 years. I currently drive a 2014 BMW 328xi and was considering an M2, but realized I could push my budget up about $10k and get a 718. Therefore, I place my deposit down to reserve the next build slot at my local Porsche dealership for a base Cayman. I test drove an S model with chrono package and really like the extra power; however, with the exception of some very rare occasions I would never be able to fully tap into all those horses behind my seat. (plus I would like to keep my drivers license) Therefore the extra power, although nice, did not seem practical for my situation so I opted for the base model. Ultimately it was my limited budget that forced my decision for the base model as I wanted to keep the cost below $70k. I have read and watched several reviews of the 718 and every review makes a big deal bout the change in exhaust sound. I did not find the sound to be that big of a deal, but since this will be my first Porsche I guess I don't miss what I never had. The Porsche does sounds better than my BMW, but that did not factor into my decision to buy one. I went with the Cayman over the Boxster because I liked the lines on the Cayman better plus my wife's car is a convertible and I did not want 2 convertibles. The color I chose will be guards red with black interior. I agreed with your observation that the seams on the black leather interior seemed muted so I opted for the leather with sport-tex since that option included silver accent stitching. I also went with the red seat belts and painted interior trim to match the exterior color. Additionally, I opted for the Cayman S 19 inch rims over the standard 18 inch rims.

Good review, as you asked, I will order a BOXSTER, guards red but crayon/black interior, same 19" wheels, PASM, heated seats and a few driving aids such as speed limit display, lane change assist, white dials and red belts, basic seats, no chrono or pdls lights. In UK, only PDK, manual option only on the S, final cost £53,500. S would be nice but a base BOXSTER will have enough to cater for my 'hooligan' mode. Currently drive a Panamera e-Hybrid, so I'll notice a change in driving dynamics! Am now 74, perhaps my last car, time will tell.

Great review. I've had a Boxter 987 S which I loved. Best car ever. Then got the 981 Boxter S - even better - love it to bits. Tried a 718 Boxter S and just could not get the same tingling feeling on the back of the neck as I rode the corners with a sound like my wife's VW. Sorry but to me 50% of the fun of driving a Boxter S with the roof down on a sunny day is that glorious noise as you push the revs - it makes your spine tingle. Its whats makes a Boxter S. The 718 - what can I say - I wont be buying one - Audi TTRS hello :(

Guys get over the crap of supposedly missing 2 Cylinders. This car was designed based on the idea of improving an already very successful design that used a 4 cylinder engine, that's it, nothing else!!! Porsche German Engineering takes into consideration improvement based not only on technology but also on heritage, tradition and self-satisfaction for what they think needs to be built, they have around six decades demonstrating that!!! I assure you they can care less what a few youtubers have to say about an engine missing 2 cylinders, supposedly!!

I would choose the standard 718 Boxter and save $14K. It seems to have all the power/torque it needs and that I, likely, would want. Currently I drive a 2015 Mercedes SL 550 but it's leased and when 2018 rolls around, I fully intend to test drive the Porsche. I figure I could save about $30K vs. the SL AND I believe I'd be completely satisfied. After the test drive . . . we'll see!

Well, I have driven manual versions of both the current base 718 Boxster and the base 981 Boxster, and though they were both test drives and not nearly as in depth as this video, I do have one observation that I have not seen or heard elsewhere. The 981 manual is easier to drive. I drive a GTI, and the clutch is softer and more forgiving on that car, and I know each manual is different - which is part of the fun. But I stalled the 718 twice and never totally felt comfortable with it, and had no such problem with the 981. Stalling is far better than smoking a clutch, and the Porsche starts right up after a stall, but still. Instead of the driver, I choose to blame the turbo and added torque. The 981 feels a little dated inside - already - while the 718 is tweaked in ways difficult to easily identify, where the interior feels more comfortable and modern. In my opinion, the 718 exterior is superior. I am not "anti-turbo," far from it, but I think that Porsche will be compelled tune the engine, exhaust, and transmission next year based on customer feedback. I think the issues are more noticeable at low speeds. I wouldn't give up on the 4 cylinder at all, but it probably could be refined some.

sorry, I come late to the show.. but I have just recently started looking at reviews of the 718 Boxster models.. now that I have spent some time doing so.. I can with certainty answer your question.. I would (and will) opt for the Boxster S- plain and simple. I have test driven both base and S versions now, and I really feel the difference in brakes, steering set-up and suspension. Also the torque feels smoother in delivery all the way upwards- although, I would be happy with just the 18" wheels and tires from the base model- I want a convertible and I want the mid-engine handling. You also ask what I drive... currently the 911 Targa 4 GTS (MY2015MY)- i.e. last natural aspirated flat 6. So why do I want to change..? I had the 981 Boxster S MY2011 (actually one of the last produced in August 2011- before the big design make-over)- and I absolutely loved it. The mid-engine set up is (in my humble opinion) just better and more fun to drive than the rear engined 911- even if the 911 these days are fully controlled and awesomely both quick and fast. I absolute love the Targa design, but I just feel that I was just as happy with the roof down and the driving in the Boxster, so when my three year lease period is up next March.. I will go back to the Boxster S. At the same time, I actually think, it is the most well designed car of any maker- sleek, almost symmetrical front and rear- and a pure roadster. (also the width of the 4 wheel drive 911- does at times make you feel you don't know where your rear tires are- around kerbs and tight bends- which was never an issue in the Boxster..)

I own what you drove less the red seatbelts and plus a manual transmission. It works for me. The sound is fine and the driving superb. It feels quicker than the PDK probably because I am more engaged which I love. It is a drivers car.

There was definite lag even with PDK in the base model I drove, and just a 1/2-second smidge of lag off the mark with the S (somewhat akin to slipping the clutch into 1st on a stick), but after that it was like piloting a guided missile but with better grip.

Base Boxster because: 1) Found a 2017 GT metallic silver/black, one-owner, 640 miles, PDK, heated steering wheel/seats/ 20" Carrera S 5- spoke classic wheel, clear bra, tint, PPI by premier dealership (+ fresh oil & filter since car is >1 year old), Pirelli P-Zeros, everything as new for $54K OTD including free delivery to me 150 miles from dealer. Will buy some Michelin all-season tires to use from September until May for another $1K. 2) Tempting 2019 GTS with PASM+, PDL+, 18 -way seats, carbon fiber, same colors, etc. a screaming deal at $88.5 K + about $5K for clear bra, tint, delivery etc. My main goal is enjoyable mountain driving, mostly between 10-11,000' on mostly steep, very twisty, dry roads when the temperature is above °40 F. The car won't be tracked and I drive with spirit, but carefully enough to avoid tickets and accidents. When signs suggest that it would be prudent to reduce speed for a curve from the posted speed limit, if conditions warrant, I remain just slightly above the limit. Nothing crazy. Mostly, I am just looking for a vintage roadster open-air experience with modern reliability and power. I didn't think that I would like the PDK because all of my other vehicles, including a C 4S are manual. But I hated the mandatory rev-matching feature (sport & sport +) on the S & GTS; on the base Boxster I can drive much more quickly and safely with the PDK than with a manual. Additionally, the next time I have to have knee surgery, the PDK will be much easier for my recovering knee. If I want a bit more power, a stage I tune + improved exhaust will give 30-50 hp for about $3K. As you suggest, that additional power really isn't required if the primary goal is mountain driving where most of the driving will be done under 60 mph. In sum, the Boxster GTS is superb, but it isn't really worth another $40K or so to me for the kind of driving I like. Thanks very much for the good review!

I would say the Cayman S, because the driving experience is more dynamic and it looks great especialy in Karmine red with black accents. Like the black sports Exhaust. I drove it, it's ok for a sporty drive style but I feel it's sometimes very nervous. But for a daily drive I have a 991 S gen 1. That's my favo!

Looking at the base Boxster. Driving a 2009 BMW 335i convertible now (chipped to ~400HP), but want an actual sports cat rather than a GT. Figure the base is going to be just as fun to drive at anything like the speed limit and don't want to over buy like I did with my 2006 Corvette Z51 (chipped to ~450HP) - that car was just lifeless at less than 30 mph over the speed limit....

My friend, they have not gotten rid of the temperature with the 'bars". The car you drove has the basic climate system rather than the automatic climate system, so it does not show an actual temperature & it only allows for changes to the fan setting or heat/cold setting.

Would probably choose the Boxster S. I like the focus and looks of the Cayman better, but I'm currently dailying a (2.0l 2014 PRHT ~Club) Miata, and I wouldn't want to give up the open top again. It's just too much fun, even now, in winter, as long as it's dry. Why S? Because not going with the best model you can get will probably always be a thing you'll regret later. In any case, the point is moot, because I do love my Miata, and I don't have the dough for the Porsches anyways :P

Feel that is such a bargain and I'd order it in all black with gloss black stock 18" wheels. Currently drive 997 C2S and I'm dreaming of a new fresh car next. Feels this will hit the spot and since I will order it with few options it will not loose a lot of value once I sell it in a year ot two.

What I aspire to drive is a Cayman S (or GTS) with PASM, Chrono, Sports Exhaust aaaaaaand Torque Vectoring ie. limited slip differential (LSD). I can't understand why fewer than 2% of Caymans out there have it??? It is only a $1200 option and Porsche has interior trim options that coast 3 times that. Before you go into overstear dynamics blah, blah, blah... a LSD is very beneficial in low traction situations or any time you break the back end loose. Also, it can help bail your ass out if you over cook it into a tight corner. What I drive now is an Audi A6 1.8t. First German car I have ever owned and I am in awe of it. How can a front wheel drive 4 banger be so fun to drive? I don't know but it is:)

I was driving a 2007 Focus 2D 5spd hatchback. Because as Tolstoy might ask, "How Much [Horsepower] Does a Man Require?". Well I'll tell you: a man requires enough horsepower (in the U.S.) to cruise at 80-85 mph. When 'forced' to convince my darling that I am not a cheapskate I started looking for a pristine Elise or Exige and soon discovered that for not much more I could get a 6spd 982 Cayman, which I suppose is less of a sports car, but a better sedan for my light-traffic-23-mile-each-way commute. Did not get the S model since both the 2.0l and 2.5l models will cruise at 80-85 mph quite readily, and both handle nearly as well as my 84 GTI at those speeds.

I know I'm like 3.5 years late but I'd pick the Cayman S. The reason is the race chip. The top of the line chip would boost the HP to 417 and the torque to 390 while in the base model the numbers would be 347 HP and 332 lb/ft of torque. And I prefer the hard top over a convertible.

Agree, I've tested both the base 718 Cayman (PDK, no Sport Chrono) and the 718 Cayman S (which had both PDK and Sport Chrono). Both are incredible performers compared with the earlier flat 6 cars which are no slouches. The base sounded around town like a Subaru with a hole in its muffler, which took away from the rest of its brilliance. The engine just sounded unrefined at low RPM's and unhappy. On the other hand, the S was a blast, and didn't sound bad, in part because the dynamic tranny mounts that come with the Sport Chrono and the Variable Vane Turbo apparently gave it both a much more lively feel and better NVH characteristics - i.e., the engine sounds smoother and happier. You pay $12k extra to get an S model though.

I'd go with the 718 Cayman S, I've driven it a few times and loved every second of it. Not a huge fan of the convertible, especially living in Chicago. I would much rather have the Cayman S at this point. I'm already looking into spec'ing one out, too bad it's in 911 territory or pricing. I feel it would be smart to wait the 2-3 years to find a CPO 718 Cayman S to save a huge chunk of change. I have a feeling these are going to depreciate slightly more then they should. I currently drive a BMW f30 and am loving it. But I can't wait till I can upgrade to a 718 Cayman S!

If you have the option to realy use the power of the S on a appropriate remote road, the S would make sense. But if you use the car as daily driver you would benefit more from the basic version with other extras. In a traffic jam you can enjoy the max leather package were the S power has no effect. On a remote winding country road you will have more pleasure with the S engine. So i would say it depends on where you live and how you use the car mainly.

I would choose the 718 Cayman S. Why? Because with the new turbo 4 engine, having a 2.5L (bigger displacement) with variable turbine geometry turbos makes more sense. The sound? Not as good as the 3.4L naturally aspirated flat 6 from 981 generation. Hence, I choose the 718 Cayman S. Less important about the sound, but more finesse in terms of chassis rigidity. I currently own a 981 Boxster S. Driving with the top down and rev the 3.4L flat 6 engine to 7000 RPM, hear that naturally aspirated engine sound, that is quite a feeling. Would I trade my current 981 Boxster S with this new 982 generation? Not a chance. This car is not about going fast all the time, it's about driving emotion.
