@@Mooney327 they didn't mess the listing. The SLT became fleet spec only from 2016 onwards, therefore the trim was no longer to be found on Ram's retail consumer website. I have a 2014 Tradesman and I can recall watching the SLT still available for retail back then on the product brochures. The SLT is basically a mid spec between the base Tradesman/Express and the Big Horn trims.

It's a 3.6 v6 Pentastar. You also have a QuadCab (I can tell by the looks). There is no SLT option on the website because form 2017 onwards, the SLT trim level on the Ram 1500 is only a Fleet sales option (rental car company sales are considered Fleet.) The SLT trim level is (very) roughly between the tRadesman and the BigHorn. I own one (a 2017 QuadCab SLT w/ 3.6) - the previous owner was Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and I had to look all of this up myself. PS: Top towing is 4400 lbs with the 3.21 gearing (which is what the SLT Rental Rams had).

My guess is this is a Canadian truck that was imported to USA and had the speedo and cluster changed over. SLT is a trim we have in Canada. Equipped this way I've seen these trucks listed in the low 30k CAD range new which is mid 20k USD. There are tons of slightly used trucks going from Canada to USA these days due to favourable exchange rates.
@tommiller58536 жыл бұрын
SLT is the same trim level they use for fleet trucks, and since he rented the truck, it's considered a fleet truck. (You can also buy them used as well - most rental companies sell the trucks when they get 2 years or close to 20k miles old.)

If you have the 3:55 rear end your towing goes up to 7600lbs. I threw in some air bags that add 1k lbs to the capacity. I get about 12 mpg towing a 4600 lb trailer at 60mph. Now if you don’t put in ethanol fuel your mpg go way up. On ethanol I would get 356 miles to a tank not towing anything at 70 mph. Non ethanol I was able to get 522 miles to a tank at 70 mph and the computer said I still had 60 miles left. I don’t drive like a teenager so that helps also. Totally happy with mine.
@cliffordlebel29776 жыл бұрын
once up to speed does the transmission hunt for gears while towing or does hit seem to handle it well?
@theoriginal11charlie6 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind its a V6. The revs can jump up high on steep inclines. We have a hill here that is 7% grade that we travel with the trailer a lot. I can not get above 45 mph and engine is steady revving at about 3500 rpms to keep that speed. But it does hold steady. It doesn't hunt for gears. I don't leave the cruise on going up hill because now I know what it is capable of so I know what speed it can do depending on the hill. Another nice feature of the transmission and engine combo is the engine braking. Pulling a trailer down around Arizona we were coming down a long hill with the trailer at about a 6% grade. I freaked out at first when the engine RPMs jumped up to 4500 to 5k until I figured out what it was doing. It actually slowed us down with out having to hit the brakes. To me this engine and tranny combo does some pretty neat stuff. Would the extra torque and HP be nice in a semi or diesel? Yes but when your on a budget and can't afford the price of the heavier duty trucks this thing does just fine. Hope that helps.

I've driven an identical truck, but it had the HEMI in it (which I know you've driven before, since you posted the review of the blue one). This IS a 3.6 V6 because it has the 'FlexFuel' badge on the back tailgate (will have 'HEMI 5.7L' on the front fenders if you have the 5.7L HEMI or 'EcoDiesel' if it has the 3.0L EcoDiesel, but they don't rent the Diesel, at least I don't think). Regarding the SLT, it's only available to fleet and rental customers, unfortunately, and offers few additional options. It is a Quad Cab with a 6'4 bed. Hope this helps. I definitely want to drive one of these and see how it is compared to the HEMI truck I drove. Awesome, awesome review!!! :)

@tommiller58536 жыл бұрын
Some of this I understand (because I came across it myself), but as an owner of a 2017 Ram 1500 SLT w/ a 3.6 Pentastar engine, I'll drop this off for anyone who looks... 1) The SLT *does* exist for Ram 1500s. However, from the 2017 model year onwards, the SLT configuration on the 1500 is only available for fleet vehicles (like, oh, rental trucks.) SLT v6 and v8 engine SLT models exist. Now if you buy an HD truck (2500/3500), you can buy those retail with the SLT package. The closest retail truck package is the BigHorn, just with the trailer brake and hitch removed (but the wiring intact, curiously), and no backup camera, etc. Also, the 2017 SLT 1500s come with uConnect 5.0 (which don't exist outside of fleet/rental trucks) - it's a uConnect 3 with a few extra goodies and features (but nowhere near as many as the uConnect 8.1). Note that I found out after asking the dealer. 2) For anyone who has a Ram and wants to know what's in it? Go to www.mopar.com, "Select a Vehicle" (upper RH menu item), make a free account, then type in the VIN. You can then get a complete loadout list of what the truck has in it. You can even do this before you buy the vehicle. If you bought it used, (which is the only way to get an SLT Ram 1500), you can contact them and send in proof of ownership to get all the benefits (and there are plenty.) 3) You were driving a QuadCab with a 6' 4" bed. I have the same. 4) Not a fan of the keyfob myself, but if you looked closer, you would have found the physical key stashed in the top. ;) That little key allows you to start and/or lock the truck w/o any electronics necessary. 5) Dude, put some air in that front driver-side tire! ;) PS: 25 mpg is awesome for a truck. Also note that the little v6 engine packs 305hp, without the need for turbos.

That's a quad cab and the bed looks like that because it has a bed liner in it. 4,600 pounds is terrible towing even for a V6. Don't know why they don't just offer a V8 standard. Good job with the review. I like how you went to such lengths to research it!
@100RentalCars7 жыл бұрын
+The Test Drive Thanks! So you don't get a liner on the crew cab? Strange. Any idea what SLT means?
@TheTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
You can get a liner as an option from the factory. I don't know if the Pendaliner in this truck is stock or aftermarket (maybe Enterprise wants to protect their trucks?). It looks aftermarket but I don't know; usually rental cars don't have aftermarket options. I've rented trucks without a liner and usually there are scratches, maybe even a few dents. You said you liked the material the bed was made out of so I just made the point that it's a liner and not the bed itself. No idea about SLT and strange that it's not on RAM's website. It's a very low end trim and probably replaced by the Express (RAM 1500 Express) I've seen in a lot of commercials when they advertise the low lease price. Also hate how many trims there are. So confusing. Three would be plenty.

Used to be the 4.7L V8 but the 3.6L V6 replaced it... has the same amount of power as the 4.7L but better MPG. Towing is 5k lbs I think for the 3.6, and 7k lbs for the HEMI or EcoDiesel. I LOVE the 3.6, and have owned BOTH a 3.6 and a 4.7 (both Grand Cherokees), and let me tell you, the V6 has WAY more power with better MPG. :)
@TheTestDrive7 жыл бұрын
Vincent D I like the 3.6L V6 a lot in the Grand Cherokee - I just drove one over 1,000 miles two weeks ago. Great engine for a mid size SUV! But in the RAM I don't think it's enough. The HEMI tows over 10,000 lbs in the RAM and the EcoDiesel is up there around 8k I think. They're all less in the Grand Cherokee of course since it's an SUV. Good to know about the 4.7L V8 - I did not know that. I just think in a pickup truck unless it's a turbo V6 like the Ford EcoBoosts it should be a V8. But I guess the entry V6 still has a place for those who want better MPG and don't need a lot of towing power / don't care as much about performance.

This is a lower end model but at least one level above the tradesman. Clues are: no sprayed in bedliner, sliding rear window, 2nd glove box, and basic touch screen, none of which are options on the Tradesman I just purchased. Higher end models have an AWD option in addition to the 2 -4WD options shown, as well as a variety of higher end interior finishes and details. Fuel economy is excellent partly due to a lower-geared rear differential which does reduce tow capacity. 4,600# towing is sufficient for the majority, who use these as cars anyway and are thusly better off with the improved fuel economy tradeoff. (Note: I've already gotten 27MPG on the highway and mine isn't even broken in yet!) V-8/diesel + higher geared rear ends are available for those who need to tow more. My biggest observations so far are the excellent fuel economy and the excellent ride quality.

Yep, I get caught a few times in most of my videos. The minivans are the worst, there's so many mirrors!

I will say this Ram has the worst automotive web site period. You can't find detail info, you can tell what rebate applies to what. Like you said it has so many trims your like what?

I agree. It's almost like the site was designed to intentionally make it difficult to learn about their trucks. And don't get me started on the trim levels. WHHHHHYYYY!!!?!?!!?

If you call 25 mpg on a 4X4 truck, or any truck, bad, find another career.

Alas, I only wish this was my career. I'm just doing this for fun. And you're right, 25 mpg is good when you compare it to other pickups, but I made the mistake of comparing it to all of the other vehicles I've been driving and reviewing lately. Sorry about that. But thanks for checking out my video/channel. Cheers! (Edit: typo)
