I'm on my third Ram with the 3.6L engine and loved them all! 250,000 km when I sold the last one which was still running beautifully. I felt like a traitor when it went out the driveway for the last time..

I have owned 3 vehicles with the 5.7 and 3 with the 3.6. I'm just going to start by saying that I've never gotten good gas mileage on a hemi engine, partly because it's inefficient and partly because smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy. I grenaded one 5.7 and had problems with the other 2 with the cylinder deactivation. I own a 2022 ram 1500 with the 3.6 etorque and besides a problem with the battery having "physical damage" when I first got the truck it has been great. I drive it slow, get good gas mileage, tows my 7x12 trailer perfectly and it is a great work truck. I plan to own the truck for at least 6 years so I mainly bought the v6 for reliability.

Note difference of "smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy" then the "drive it slow, get good gas mileage" which shows everyone that it's not the engine in this case, but the driver.

I own a 2019 ram with the v6 and so far so good. I use it hauling kids and occasionally getting groceries, mulch and odd furniture. I drive 10 miles to town and in the city driving. Plenty of power for my needs and has been dependable. I don't haul heavy loads or drive long distances. I also change the oil at 4000 miles

Good video. Had/have 2 pentastar engines (13-van and 19-1500) I bought for intended use. Mostly city, weekend cottage runs and some trailer work (pulling motorbikes). Both engines were solid and I didn’t really notice any lack of power for what I was doing with them. Tried my friends Hemi, was a gas to step on the pedal and have her snap too but I don’t normally do that with my Ram. All I want was the engine to be reliable, put the key in and go and do what I need it to do (haul kids and kit) safe and sound. Now the bikes on the other hand.. that’s for the fun factor!

Best I ever got on the highway was almost 20mpg from Tampa to Atlanta. Very flat..no wind. 70-75mph. Best I've ever gotten in town is 16. I dont beat it. I have a 3.6 Pentastar in my 2016 Chrysler 200. Had it since new. Not a lick of trouble. It is a good strong and reliable engine. As far as a full sized pick-up is concerned, I think for people who mostly use a pick-up truck like a station wagon, such as homeowners hauling something occasionally, it would be fine. If you need a truck to haul heavy loads a lot, it isn't the best choice.

Exactly, truck duty is defined by it's case use. i.e. 1500/2500/3500 Which is why many cases the heavier duty trucks overall tend to be resold overall, which proof can be seen on the market.

A 3.6L dual overhead cam motor----with all the slick electronics that our engines have today---can create more than 1.3 horsepower per cubic inch without resorting to a turbo. And last a long time. Wife had a GMC Acadia that weighed almost as much as these 1500 Rams and that GMC never felt sluggish. The 3.6 RAM should feel even better with the hybrid system.

My mother-in-law has a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee limited with the 3.6 L Pentastar V6. She’s currently at 147,000 miles and so far no issues from the engine. She’s a very gentle driver and just drives it around and to work. She has had one trouble code for an EVAP purge valve. But the area in which we live does not do emissions testing, so it doesn’t matter anyways to her. She loves her jeep. She’s always bought jeeps and I doubt she’ll buy anything else!

I would definitely rate the 3.6 a 4.5/5 stars. I bought mine brand new a year ago and have currently put 132k on it. Only thing I've had to replace is the 48V battery pack($3500), Fuel pump (1800) and we changed the spark plugs a few weeks ago. Only thing I hated most was. It took almost 6 hours to pull apart the manifold and accessories to change just 3 spark plugs on the driver side. However, I do Long hauls with it across country. I have pulled 9600 through Arizona and CA mountains with no problem. The engine is actually made to hold a redline up hill and will hold 6k RPM and not blow up. I have been generally satisfied.

I used to have a Pentastar in my old '16 Wrangler JKU, with 3.21 rear axle and a manual, and it was absolutely anemic - you really had to rev it out to get any kind of useful torque out of it. HEMI trucks (even a Power Wagon which I briefly drove) feel like muscle cars by comparison. I am sure it would've been a lot better coupled to an 8-speed ZF and lower rear-axle gears, but can't imagine having a 3.6L in a full-sized truck.

If you want to really use a truck to tow move up to a 3/4 ton or higher. The 3.6 with the 8speed and 3.21 set is a much better combo for a daily commuter and tows anything you should be towing with a half ton . I think dodge did good with this combo for the majority of peoples needs. Have a blessed day.

Around town I usually get about 20-25mpg, not too bad for a 4k lb car. I saw someone was mentioning the ZF transmission. The ZF is used in many forms and I think it was 3 HP ratings. 8HP45=450 hp, 8HP650? =650 hp, and one higher hp was something like 850hp. My car has the 8 speed ZF. I agree with you. Pick up truck buyers have ability to select a truck based on intended use. If you live in a city and want a very versatile vehicle, this truck with the 6 cylinder is probably perfect. I drive 3/4 trucks because I operate a ranch, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the 1500 if I didn’t have that need for power. Modern pickup trucks drive almost like cars, so why buy a sedan or hatchback when can get the same amenities in a truck with much more versatility?

The only thing I can think of is that people overload their trucks beyond what's legal. So many people I talk to had no idea tongue weight drops payload. Most 1500 trucks won't be able to safely tow a 7500 lb trailer either because of the tow restrictions or payload once they load up the family of four and all conveniences inside, not to mention what they put in the bed of the truck.

this is honestly a great option. mild hybrid systems are far more preferable over just start stop as the hybrid part can get the vehicle moving while the engine is starting up. and using the 48v system to get it started saves the 12v crank battery from possibly going flat from usually not having enough charge time after starting the engine. great system to use on an existing platform and everyone i've talked to has enjoyed the systems.

Every time an engine is failing it seems like a ticking issue. I had a 2010 Hemi 1500. 164,000 miles started getting misfire errors. We fixed those. Wasn’t aware it was known the lifters go. They went, it what actually was the misfires. Lifters shaved metal into the engine. Chrysler wouldn’t touch it. So I traded it in on a 2020 Ram Big Horn with the V6. I have enjoyed it so far. 27,000 miles after 2 years. Feels as quick as my hemi. Yes the hemi had more horsepower and can hit another level. But the pennistar with the etourqe takes off and quick. Would have been 30-60 days for a new engine from Chrysler and the same to rebuild from a separate shop. I have a business and needed a truck. Hate GM, never liked Fords I’ve driven. Tundra was changing models and it wasn’t released yet. So I bought what I like Dodge/Ram! Was planning on getting 2 more years out of that 2010 and hit close to 200,000 miles. But it didn’t happen. Loved that truck. It never in 11+ years ever left me stranded on the side of the road and I drove many many late nights. Wish I didn’t have to trade it. I’d have had it fixed. But it was the pandemic

The 3.6 is an okay engine, but the 5.7 hemi is definitely a better engine for a full size 4x4 truck. If you watch Fastlane truck, Stubby, their brand new 3.6 Pentastar 4x4 Ram 1500, was struggling towing 5000lbs. Now that was at 7% grade doing the world's toughest towing test the Ike gauntlet but my point is still valid. I'd say if you plan to do any sort of towing or use it as a work truck make sure you get the 5.7 Hemi option.

I saw that video. The problem was the gear ratios. They were going too fast for second and too slow for third. They had 3.21 gears. It needed the 3.55 gears. It would have gone at least 10 mph faster since it could have pulled more rpm in third.

@@user-tb7rn1il3q you're right they were at the top of second and the bottom of third but in my humble opinion 3.55 gears wouldn't have helped much vs the 3.21s. That's not a huge difference in gearing maybe 300 RPM at the same speed which wouldn't have been enough for that little V6... now maybe if they had like 4.11 gears it would have definitely made all the difference but that would kill fuel economy when you're not towing so much you might as well have the hemi

I had a 2019 V-6 and the overall power was adequate at lower elevations, especially after I installed a pedal commander to get rid of the throttle lag (it had the 3.21 gears) during takeoff. In hilly or mountainous areas, it hunted the gears and regularly ran near 4k rpm's barely loaded to maintain interstate speeds. The truck itself was great, the 3.6 was merely okay. Also, my gas mileage was never close to the EPA ratings, whereas I regularly hit it with my 22' 2.7 F-150 and can still smoke a hemi. Two ticks, 1) the header bolts break and you get a leak that ticks. $800 per side at the dealer because of busted bolt recovery. 2) the hemi tick. I was googling it after seeing a few people screaming to avoid the etorque. Looks like some lemon law class actions already underway and major etorque failures including kicking in the emergency brake while driving at highway speeds? Leaking rear windows hitting the battery, pcm failures. Just seems like headache.

I couldn't do a truck with a v6. I'm too old school. I mean the sound of a v8 alone is enough for me. I also just like the power delivery from a v8 better. I'll take a hit on fuel consumption. Speaking of fuel consumption lol, when do we get another video on the powerwagon?

I'm exactly with you. a good old pick up truck should have that snarly v8 sound to it. but as simple as the v6 is, it would probably run and drive just fine for most people. as for the power wagon I was really hoping the snow would have fallen by now but we are still waiting. My 2019 ram 1500 with the 3.6 has had so many issues. Spent about 7 total months at the dealer getting work done. BCPM failure, had to have the e-torque batter replaced, coolant leak, transmission sensor replacement, oil leak, rear speed sensor failure. Would shut off at low speed, not to mention the A/C sucks from factory.

If you are buying a 1500 series truck to do "work", haul loads and tow occasionally, to me, a V-8 is a necessity. I can see V-6 truck being used for light delivery or a grocery getter and an occasional trip to a Home Depot. Just my personal opinion. Great video Alex!

I read the comments (some very informative) and listened to this video (very knowledgeable speaker) and here are my conclusions: for me, trailering a horse in the Sierra mountains is going to be a struggle at 7000 feet elevation even with my Brenderup trailer (1300 pounds empty, then add an 1100# Arabian) where I’ll be well within the GCWR for the Tradesman. I read one comment about the engine screaming at 4000 rpm in the mountains. That was a little scary. The speaker recommended using higher octane fuel which offsets the mpg advantage. It sounds like the V6 is for the flat lander hauling groceries. BTW, I test drove the V6 yesterday on the flat, not in the mountains, and not towing, and it was a nice truck so it is a good choice probably for the commuter. I also want 4x4 so I am not stuck on a dirt path in the mountains with my horse and trailer. I am keeping by 2005 Ram 3500 2WD (duh, why didn’t I have the sense to get 4x4 then-thought I was saving money then) for the big tows on pavement only (gooseneck horse trailer). The Ram 3500 has 95000 miles and is a beast and smooth as silk. With the 5.9L engine it pulls the 10,000#. Trailer in the mountains like a breeze running at 1,400 rpm about. Never a problem with that truck and its been to Montana and back to Cali.

I really wanted to give the ecodiesel a shot. But cam gear sprockets breaking free, bearing failure, and crankshafts splitting in half is just too much risk. Hemi is no better with the lack of oil to the cam which causes the cam/lifter failure. Pentastar is your best bet.

In my experience with 6 cylinder engines in full size trucks it’s not often worth it as the fuel economy difference is so minimal. All you’re giving up is the extra power for bigger hills. I had an F150 with the 3.7 V6 for a couple years and was really disappointed in the fuel efficiency of the truck. Around town I was getting low teens and around 20 on the highway. Those are V8 numbers. The 3.7 was a very good engine for Ford, just not a good choice for the F150

Took it back to dealer few days later when he told me was a good day to bring it and currently still awaiting the results of the issue. Can anyone shed some light on that?

I owned a 2015 Chrysler 200C with the same engine with no issues except for one: There is an oil cooler that is mounted on top of the intake manifold. There is nothing wrong with that location except the oil cooler is made of plastic. If you have one of these engines and find so much as a drop of oil underneath the vehicle, change the oil cooler and spend the extra bucks to get an ALL METAL oil cooler. The oil cooler on my car failed totally and I lost the contents of most of the crankcase. It was an unbelievable mess. Why in the name of God do they use a plastic oil cooler?

I honestly as a truck owner don’t buy a truck for fuel efficiency. I’d rather have the towing capacity and that famous V8 exhaust sound. More power to those that want a V6 however, if you want a V6 go to Jeep for. Grand Cherokee or Wrangler. Especially you heard him if you want the crew cab you get less towing. 6300 is almost useless imo. The cons make it not worth it either. It’s been said the new I6 Hurricane engines come with turbos. Picture this, turbos go out all the towing power goes out.
