We personally have not seen much of this issue but as you stated it can and does happen, not specifically with this generation but overall there are some engines that aren't quite perfect. Ram 150? that's Ford speak. Only thing manufactures care about is if it lasts up to their warranty, after that they don't care. Guess you can go with a V8 next time, instead of a V6. As for the ZF8HP transmission.... they are on a lot of different makes. BMW pretty much sells the model to everyone. And they weren't used in Ram until 2013? maybe?. (...not the same trans as a 2011 v8, regardless) Though...I guess the straight 6 twin turbo, Hurricanes will be using the trans, when the V8 goes bye, bye. idk.

Back in the day (30 years ago or so) I rebuilt 2 engines for my 77 Ford 1/2 Ton. But things have changed so much since then. Thank you for making these videos to help those of us trying to save a few bucks (sometimes more than a few) by doing the work ourselves. :) I usually buy my parts from the dealer (OEM), but next time I will order from 1A. On a side note, I changed my water pump yesterday and I was shocked by how small the radiator is. I mean ... it's really thin. On my old Ford the radiator was massive. Huge. Guess technology has advanced enough to make everything smaller.

Informative video, but here is what I’ve experienced with my 2014 1500 Ram. I had the tailgate issue first off, luckily it was covered because of a recall issue. The second common thing on these Rams is the hemi tick, which stems from broken manifold bolts. That happened to my truck at 110k miles. And the most common issue, which happened to my truck at 38k (just out of warranty) was the fuel level sensor went bad. To repair that issue, the dealer wanted $900.00. Most of the cost is labor because you need to drop the gas tank. My car wouldn’t pass smog because of this issue so I had to get it fixed.

I just got a 2012 ram 1500 sport 5.7L Hemi with 96k miles on it. Within a couple weeks I started noticing the tick down low on passenger side that goes away when the engine warms up signaling it is probably time for exhaust manifold bolts to be replaced. Luckily this doesn't need done immediately so I can save up to replace the exhaust manifold with some headers. I've also replace my entire fuse box (or as I've now learned it to be called the TIPM) Because my shut down relay was not being held in tight enough and any little bump caused my truck to shut down. Could put something under the lid to keep it pinned down but wanted a more permanent fix. A used Grade A box was $350. Brand new is around $800+ I think. And it took my shop literally 20 minutes to fix so if you have this problem just do it yourself. My radiator is also slightly noisy so if I ever have some extra money to blow I'll get some new fans or do whatever necessary to quiet it down. But that's all. Otherwise it runs beautifully and I love my truck.

I noticed you did not mention the "Hemi tick". This has been acknowledged by even FCA engineers. The thing is, this occurs without any mechanical issues. I should mention that this causes no type of misfire and does not show a check engine light.

@meadmaker4525 Жыл бұрын
Surprised you didn't mention the cab water leaks that plague these trucks (I own a 2015 1500, so I know). Either the high-mounted 3rd brake light seal fails and floods the headliner, or the sliding rear window drains get clogged and leak water behind the rear seat, or the air vents behind the rear seat disintegrate allowing massive amounts of water to enter the cab under the rear seat and travel forward. This has happened on so many Gen-4 Rams there should be a general recall, but they haven't done it. I've re-sealed my brake light, so that's one down. I can't get to the sliding window drain holes without removing the sliding mechanism, which tends to break when you remove it, so I'm screwed there. And I have to remove the entire rear seat to access and replace the cab vents. This is my 3rd Dodge Ram (they'll always be a Dodge truck, don't care what FCA/Stellantis says) and it's been pretty good, but 3 massive water intrusion points into the cab is just beyond the scope of reason for this truck, especially at the price point they sell for. I've talked to my dealer about it multiple times and they just don't want to hear about it. Which means owners are left to try to figure it out on their own. Every truck has its own quirks and problems that happen throughout its life, but I'm starting to see people on the forums complaining about the same water leaks on the Gen-5 Rams now. So, even though FCA/Stellantis has known about these water leak problems for years, they've failed to design a better product and now the new trucks have inherited the same problems. It's insane.

#3 hit me on my 2014 RAM 1500 @ 115,000 miles! Stuck lifter had been chewing on the cam and gave me no indication until it was too far gone. Now I have a new engine to the tune of $13,000! I'm no longer a real fan of the HEMI. But I put the money into and will have to hang onto it for a while. It did come with a 3 year, 100,000 mile transferrable warranty.

I've got the old issue of the exhaust manifold bolts breaking on my 09 ram that I bought new. It came with a lifetime drivetrain warranty that took care of the problem the first time it happened. I went back to the dealership to have it done again and was told that since I didn't come in for the free inspections my Warranty is no longer in effect. I was never told about needing to have the inspection done. It might be somewhere in the fine print on the warranty. I found a set of Dorman stainless steel manifold bolts that are supposed to be an upgrade so that's a job for me to install in the near future.

I have a 2013 Ram 5.7 with the 6 speed transmission. Has around 90k miles and I had it since 25k miles. Only issues I ever had are, Exhaust manifold bolts broke under warranty at 34k miles and a shift solonoid in the transmission, both were fixed by dealer at 34k miles, since then Zero issues, been super reliable. My truck has really high oil pressure, more than most I seen from friends etc, zero tick. I drove friends Ram with same setup and did not feel as powerful and ticked, but oil pressure was 1/2 of mine. At start my trucks oil pressure is high 60s, at fully warm parked idle sits at 43, seems like hemi tick may have something to do with oil pressure.

Man you’re not going to mention the biggest issue with this truck? Most common cause of a tickling noise is the fact that the exhaust manifold bolts break every 30k miles

2014 RAM 1500 Longhorn 396,000 km, replaced water pump at 150,000 km, and one front wheel bearing at around 300,000 km. Just started getting lifter noise and tranny shifts getting jerky so I decided to do it right and put new reman engine and tranny in. Should be good for another 400k now. $13,500 installed for both, beats $70,000 for a new one and the rest of the truck was still nice.

Replace your MDS system and delete it. It will need a non MDS lifters and new head gasket, also remove the MDS 4 solenoids on top and plug them correctly with the wires disconnected. Then get a tuner to reprogram the MDS system and have it shut off. It will remove any engine lights from appearing. That's the headache if you hear a slight ticking. Hope that your cam didn't get chewed up and have miss fires if you wait too long for replacement.

The only problems I've had with my 2014 ram is exhaust manifold bolts and a water pump. Water pumps don't last forever. Always used synthetic oil and changed it regularly. At 160k miles now. I had one window regulator go bad at 25k miles replaced for free then batteries and belts over the years. It's been very good to me. Still gets up to 28 mpg at times and I average over 20 with my mostly highway commutes. I did the spark plugs once at 100k miles. Can't complain.... yet.

Love the 1A Auto videos. They've helped me do some basic maintenance on my vehicles (brake, strut and wheel bearing replacements). But, I have to question this one. I own a 2009 1500 Big Horn which I bought new in July, '09. 12 years and a 126k miles later and the only problem I encountered with mine, that he mentions, was the tailgate issue. It only occurred twice and both time the air temp was below 15 degrees F. A little spray lube fixed that issue both times. I've never even heard of the other 4 issues he mentions. I was waiting for him to mention more common/known problems like 1. Exhaust manifold bolts breaking; or 2. Roof pan leaking around 3rd brake light and satellite radio antenna. But, I guess 1A Auto doesn't sell parts for that:) Only other issues I've experienced for anyone wanting to compare notes are: 1. Rear sliding window motor failure (thanks to my daughter playing with the open/close switches); 2. Side view mirror, turn signal/puddle light lens cover falling off the mirror while driving ( either due to weak adhesive, too many trips and too much beating thru the automatic car wash...or both); 3. Severe fading of the black fiberglass covering on the Ramboxes.

I have a 2016 ram 1500 express and only issues I’ve had after 5 years and driving 140,000 miles is Water pump, radiator, two batteries, exhaust bolts came loose on passenger side, and tailgate not closing because the inside latches were gunked up so they wouldn’t lock when I would close it. I only use amsoil, or mobile one for 10,000 mile oil changes. Also start it and let the rpms get below 1000 before I start driving. I always take the eco off so I’m not ever running on 4 cylinders with the MDS too. Also installed an oil catch. I drive hard consistently going over 100 mph and push it hard just getting up to speed. Truck has been awesome not one complaint.

I had a used 2015 RAM. I got no help with annoying issues. Traded it back after nine months. It had the electrical issues so the TIPM was possibly the issue. The main issue was water and humidity inside the cab. During rain storms water leaked in from front grab handles and windshield. Every afternoon the inside windows were covered in condensation. Then every morning during the winter I had to scrape ice from outside and inside windows. That's when I traded back in because the dealership couldn't figure out why. Very disappointed.

I've had a '17 (written off) and now a '19 Classic. Neither have gotten to high mileage yet but so far the only real issue I've had is with water leaks around the third brake light. The cam and lifter issue I believe is mostly early fourth gen trucks ('09-'13) and has apparently been fixed on newer ones. I'll wait and see on that one but I'd recommend one over the Ford and GM offerings.

When you do research you will find problems with any vehicle. My friend had a new chevy, 5.3 engine go out under 50k miles- that same friend has replaced turbos on his companys ford diesels. The critical question is do the engines and transmissions and body hold up on the 4th gen rams and so far I am very happy! with my 2014 ram big horn I bought new and now have 120k miles. I need to replace manifold bolts but lots of great videos on you tube for that. I only run Mobile 1 extended. Ive had almost no electrical issues and the seats and interior and ride are still extremely comfortable and quiet. 6 years later not much rust underneath either. If you tow stuff on and off I love the easy power of the hemi. 8 speed transmission not one problem ever. The fords newer aluminum body when towing kinda jumps around in the wind too much. For ANY truck...you can not get away with not maintaining it and really REALLY not get away after 100k miles. If you don't have $2500 to spend in meantime dont buy a truck. 1a auto videos are great and have really helped me on a number of cars.

There are 3 5.7 Hemi Rams in our family. ALL 1500 trucks. Many years, zero issues. Big word of advice though, change the oil more often, use the expensive brand with zddp additive, because this zinc additive was taken out of many oils. These hemis like to have good oil and the zddp is a good protection for the valve train. I read about this in the early ownership of these vehicles and converted them all to this in our family. No issues.

My truck started the lifter tapping about a year & a half ago. I thought that it was something that I had done wrong or forgot to do. Then there is the AC system that stops working when it's hot outside. Work fine otherwise. I had to replace the blower, and the relay for the AC. The trailer circuit is registering a trailer when their isn't one. The park sense circuit on the front of the truck for no discernible reason. The ABS system has started malfunctioning. The code says that it's the front right sensor. So I've order some replacement parts to see if I can remedy some of these issues. I'm happy that I stumbled onto your website and others, because the things that are happening should be happening I've just now after 10 years of driving gone over 161K miles.
