In Florida especially when I go to the keys the ports are wonderful because of all the sea grass and yes you can get a rope out of the ports. It was hard but I forgot my knife in the truck, but was able to untangle the rope in about 30 minutes and didn't have to get in the water. But I do agree scarab boats do look absolutely amazing. I got my Yamaha almost 5 years ago and the only thing I had to do is standard maintenance.

Yamaha makes great boat for sure! my friend has a Yamaha yxz utv he races pro. He's broken every piece of suspension on the car, but is still running the original engine and trans. That's a testament to their reliability. but I love my Can-Am x3 with Rotax turbo power. I don't think the engines will be a week point for scarabs.

I would agree that the impeller sleeve isn't going to keep weeds out of your intake. definitely depends where you are going to do most of your boating. I run mostly rocky bottoms in clear water. I've only had to pull a few small sticks out so far. But if you're in more natural lakes and rivers you might have more weeds. So for me I like having the bigger storage on the swim step and not having another kill switch to worry about. plus it's hot where I'm at so I'm usually in the water anyway! Lol! Thanks for watching and commenting on the video!

I looked hard at that scarab before purchasing my AR240. Scarab is of course an awesome company and I love CAN AM/BRP.. but I just couldn't do it without having those clean outs.. I've owned my AR240 for 2 years now and we have sucked up two ropes so far.. one time it got sucked into both engines while tubing (blaming the wife 100% for this one lol).. But man, without those ports we would have been stranded out on the lake. Both times we were able to work at them enough to get them out and we even saved the rope.. You think you can just pull the rope out of there from the back? haha.. Better bring your scuba gear and hope your hand fits through the intake grates... happy boating

I won't buy a Yamaha boat because of their lack of engine options. The only engine in their twin-engine boats is a NA powerplant until you spend over $150k. Outside of the 27 footer, the only Yamaha twin-engine boat that has a supercharger is the 252XD, their most expensive boat. As of right now, my next boat will be a Scarab 215 with twin 300s. I was unsure about the color but was leaning towards the blue interior and gelcoat, and seeing it in this video just confirmed it is the right color.

I think I'll stop at this point but if you need more help just go look at some of the KZbin reviews of this boat to the Yamaha 242. billbo baggins funny thing about opinions. Everyone’s got one. One of the main reasons I bought a Scarab is because I thought Yamaha’s seats were cheap and uncomfortable. Scarab’s have more power. But Yamaha ‘s are arguably more reliable. I definitely think Scarab’s look better. Nothing uglier that a tan Yamaha on a single axel bare aluminum trailer! And you are right! I did pay way less! Oh did I mention Yamaha’s slow speed handling isn’t even close to being as good as a Scarab’s? Like I said many times I do like Yamahas. Just wasn’t the boat I wanted.

Great video & great boat! I really thought I wanted a Yamaha jet boat until talking with my cousin (he sells boats at a Skipper Bud's dealership here in Wisconsin.) My cousin introduced me to the Scarab & my wife and I fell in love with the brand instantly. Unfortunately we are not able to purchase one at this time, but when we are ready for a different boat I want a Scarab 215 or possibly a 255. I'm amazed at the features the Scarab has & the fully liquid cooled engines with actual antifreeze is awesome. From what I have heard these Scarab jet boats are a dream to drive & drive like no other! I really like the Yamaha boats & Yamaha in general as I have 2 of their snowmobiles, but it will be a Scarab when the time comes!

Nice review but the Yamaha is a better boat, you could cut ropes from the plug, the rear on the Yamaha is 2 tiered, the tower is way nicer and the Yamaha motors are bullet proof. Center storage on Yamaha is insane can fit fishing rods, has a front ladder etc having said all that it’s based on a 242 limited not a 210. And yeah you would not drive with people on the front unless it’s dead flat sea.
@jetboatjohn8171
@jetboatjohn8171 5 жыл бұрын
Those are just my opinions.. I didn't like the tower on the 2018 Yamaha the Scarab looks better to me. and is lighter to drop. but the 2019's are different than when I was looking. the Yamaha is 2 tiered but they are both hard surface no padding on the 210 and thin padding on the bigger boats, I have a front ladder, I don't have to worry about clearing ropes because they shouldn't get wrapped around my prop shaft in the first place and I don't have to worry about two more safety kill switches. Rotax engines are solid also. And something I forgot to mention in the video is Scarab's trailers are better than most custom trailers, I know because I had to get a new one after we got hit and our old one was totaled. there are some things I do like better on the Yamaha, like I think it has more storage, I like their seat hinges better too but they used to not have anything holding the seats on in the Yamaha. And the 255 uses the same type now. I plan on doing a video on what Yamaha did better. I looked at Yamaha a few times and almost bought one. but my wife and I just liked the Scarabs a little more. but I have to admit the 2019 AR240's are really nice. thank you for watching and commenting on the video!

You state that yamaha is better like its a fact. Warranty? Scarab wins, engine reliability? Yamaha jetski engines, the newer ones are out numbered almost 3 to 1 to Seadoo brp engines on the water in last 10 years, they are self cooled and don't have overheating problems from sediment, salt, sand, etc in the cooling passages that is very common in yami's. Power? Scarab wins. Speed? Scarab wins. Handling? Scarab wins. Styling? Scarab hands down other than the new 27 footer tamahas look very nice. Dockibg maueverabilty?? Not even close... Fuel efficiency? Scarab wins. Best dashboard? Toss up, scarab medallion very nice, but have to admit the top yamahas are looking very good. Comfort? Scarab better vinyl, thicker, softer, seats are more plush, . Rear platform? Not a contest, Scarab wins . People who buy jet boats want performance... scarab beats yamaha in literally every category of performance. Literally. Yamaha owners talking for last 3 years about how superchargers are terrible, they break, need maintenance, and look at those "other guys" needing to supercharge their engines making them less reliable than non s/c yamaha engines.. hmm, what's this? What is Yamaha doing now? Following? Now putting s/c's on thier engines to compete?? Hmm. ACE BRP 1600. 300 hp engine , ZERO maintenence supercharger..... Yamaha is still by far the largest jet boat manufacturer and therefore has the most service centers, which is a big deal. But rught now, today, compare the 21s and compare the 25s, top for top.. scarab is a better boat winning in basically every damn FACTUAL category. Yamaha ownerss will always talk about yamaha quality , even when they have friends with blown engines, stripped chargers, etc.. the amount of engine issues that yamahas have had in the last 6-8 years is surprising if you know the numbers. The 4tec brp engines, in stock form, AND when tastefully modified are damn near bulletproof. The new ACE 300 hp engine is phenominal. Steering while under way is far smoother and precise. The boats hull is more responsive and fun. Almost no one looks at the yamaha jets and says damn that thing looks awesome. Scarab? Every time out in the water.. it will take a while, but people who care about things like performance, warranty, looks, comfort, etc.. there will be more and more scarabs on the water. Competition is a beautiful thing :)

Thanks for the review. There are things that I definitely like that you point out on your boat. But not having the clean out ports for me are a deal breaker. I had a ar190 and on several occasions it saved my a$$. 2 times sucking up rop. I was able to get at the rope thru the clean out. Didn't ever have to get into the water. Dont get me wrong, it was a job, only because I wanted to save the rope and not cut it. Another time I was in the ocean off of Miami. For some reason there was a ton of seaweed floating around so much so that you couldn't avoid it. So, you guessed it the jet drive sucked it up. Again with the access port it was a breeze, never had to get under the boat like you would on a boat without them. Again IMO you just can't have a boat without them. If you do good luck in cleaning out the drive or drives. THIS IS A BIG DEAL....

We just bought a 2019 AR240. We like the hinged seats and definitely the cleanouts. The final out the door price at Leaders RPM was $58,298 tax included with 3yr warranty and a custom trailering cover. If I could have found a ridiculous deal on a 255 with the 400hp package and the tower we might have gone that way but we couldn't match that deal when we were looking at 400hp 215's with a tower. Our old boat was a 21ft Caravelle Interceptor with a 300hp 350 Mag MPI and a Bravo 1X oudrive. I though that boat ran pretty strong. I knew jet boats plain quicker than I/O boats, but wow even though it is a bigger boat our 240 is an absolute beast in comparison.

I’ve always liked the Yamahas and jet boats in general. They are cool and different, but when we looked at boats two years ago, we discovered the Yamahas had rather thin hulls and not finished well inside of their storage compartments. They reminded me of the old Bayliners from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Just seem to be cheaply made except for the engines which are supposedly rock solid. Chaparral jets have way better fit and finish; however, they come with the Rotax. At the time and mentioned in other comments, I was a little leery of the Rotax reliability; although, proper maintenance is always key.

I have the 2020 Yamaha 242x. What I do like better about the scarab is the reverse buckets and the way you can spin the boat when in neutral. I know because I also have a seadoo RXTX that has the same reverse. Really nice feature. That said, I looked at both boats and overall I like the Yamaha better. The touch screen connext system, the motor access, the tower, the more reliable Yamaha motors, the head and those clean out ports are just pure genius, I’ve already had to use them and Yes, you can definitely cut a rope out from the that port. Without that I’m limping back one one motor or towing it back.
@Spirited_Driver
@Spirited_Driver Жыл бұрын
...Not to mention the Yamaha you CAN spin it 360 on the spot because it has independent levers for FWD and REV. This is ESPECIALLY handy when you need to back into a dockspace, or turn around in very tight areas where you need a bit of reverse thrust. Can't do that on a BRP in the same fashion. Also, the Yamahas reverse like a normal boat, but the Rotax steers backwards while in reverse which is very counter intuitive!

4:50... totally agree as a Yamaha 212x owner, the one thing that really bothers me is the reverse buckets. Yamaha claims that their design is superior, but I’ve now owned my Yamaha and I use to own a standard reverse bucket jet where the thrust is direct to the sides. Sides is way better than the downward Yamaha reverse thrust. There’s a longer delay on the Yamaha reverse and there is less control. Jet Boat Pilot came out with an additional lateral thruster attachment, different from the thrust vectors; it actually takes about 20% of the downward reverse thrust and throws it to the side. It looks legit, but who wants to spend 500+ on Reverse, I’ve chose to deal with a less superior reverse. I’m sure Yamaha doesn’t design something similar as a standard because they probably get a kick back from the JBP sales. A negative by product of capitalism- 500 bucks extra for decent reverse lol 😂 oh well 95% of the time the throttles are forward.

In my video 'we have a problem' there is a new 212x that had some thrust vectors built in. they aren't as big as scarab because of the articulating keel, but at least they have added more into their design so you don't have to buy more after market products. definitely something I want to do more videos on.

Jet boat John - love your videos, I've watched every single one multiple times (along with all the Jet Boat Pilot videos and any other video I can find on the Tube). We pick up our AR240 on the 17th out in Vegas. We were all about Scarab until we went to Gailey's in Bakersfield (where I believe you boat yours) and discovered they no longer are a dealer. No close Scarab dealer. Bert's Mega Mall in Covina didn't want to play ball with our Pontoon trade in so we wound up in Vegas. Can't wait. Just like you say over and over again, time will tell on Scarab vs Yamaha. I think they both have their Pros and Cons. Keep those videos coming!

Navigator8420 honestly the Brp engines are the least of my worries on this boat. They fixed the superchargers in 2017, but my boat is naturally aspirated. I’m much more worried the electronics and they fact that boat dealerships are discontinuing their Scarab sales. My nearest Scarab dealer is four hours away from me now. I do most of my own maintenance on my boat and my Can-Am X.3 so I can get by. I can order parts and get work done at the Can Am dealerships. But if someone wasn’t able to do any of their own work that should be something they think about. Still love our boat!

Yes, it's features are nicer, but the yamaha is way cheaper. So, it comes down to what you pay for. I mean, just searching up prices, for a baseline 215 Scarab as of right now, is over 60K. That doesn't include tower, floor features and creature comforts you have. The closest equivalent I found retails at 90K within a 500 mile radius of Bullhead city(Where I live). Now, compare that to an AR220 which is out the door at 56K. The price is night and day. So, I'm curious, did you buy through dealership or private sale? Is the boat used?

John, you have a VERY sharp looking boat! I certainly agree I like the looks much better than the later Yamahas. The cleanout ports on the Yamahas work pretty well. Many people don't maintain them properly and have trouble getting them out when the day comes that they need to remove them. Otherwise, it's a good feature. Yamaha has had trouble with the plugs blowing out and they've finally re-designed them to prevent this. If you have an older Yamaha, you really need to tie the plug together so you don't lose one if it blows out. As far as getting a rope out of the driveline, the best way to do it is to remove the spark plugs from the affected engine. This allows you to rotate the engine backwards and unwind the rope. You can grab the driveshaft coupling on the back of the engine, or reach into the jet pump and turn the impeller (watch for sharp edges). Many times the rope won't even be cut.

Kinda dont have much respect for Jet Boat owners out of the gate . All the negs just dont outweigh the have to have a prop thing. Given that if someone put a gun to my head and said " the only way your getting on the water is with a Jet Toy" I wouldn't consider anything but a Yamaha. If place s to lay is your criteria pull a raft or get a Pontoon.
@jetboatjohn8171
@jetboatjohn8171 5 жыл бұрын
What I mean by a place to lay is, You hang out at the back of your boat most of the time. The girls are laying on the boat and the guys are usually standing in the water at the back while your sitting at a beach or in a channel. that's how most boaters on the river use their boat. I don't know what you mean by you don't have respect for jet boats? I Don't think you have any knowledge of a modern jet boat! and I've had more than a few prop boats in my 30 years of owning a boat. having jet now has opened up huge parts of my rivers and lakes that I was unable to get to with my prop boats without the fear of damaging another prop or hitting my out drive on a sand bar!

I don't say this with a shitty undertone, but you may think differently if educated more on newer jet boats. I have had many boats, ski boats, fishing boats, bass type boats, bay boats, grew up in south fla been on boats a lot.. the are reasobns why the are tons of diff types of boats.. but id bet that many of the reasons why you may think all jet boats are toys, all have been put to rest in last 5 years. #1. Steering.. you may think that docking a jet boat is hard.. if so you are wrong. Scarab/BRP true nuetral system is phenominal and is easier to maneuver than ANY propeller set up, other than a quarter milliin dollar boat with side thrusters. #2. Jet drive boats today for the size they are compared to prop boats are just as expensive, more comfortable, more capable, more room, better handling, more maneuverable, etc. So, if they are "toys" in your mind, then I assume your boat is also a toy. My Scarab is $95k, is 25 ft, has 600hp, goes 64 mph, handles 3-4 ft WAVES while running through them at 40mph... it also cruises at 32 mph while achieving nearly 4 mpg with 8 people on board. It has a head, sink, seats 13, doesnt need engine maintenance for 100 hrs, can operate in 18 inches of water, no need for lower unit maintenance, no prop damage, etc... maybe you are a fisherman.. look at the Scarab 255 Open.. 600hp, 25 ft, open fisherman, center console, capable of shallow water AND open ocean fishing.. you may not be educated is all Im saying. If you are already educated in all this, then you may just be very biased. :)

There is no perfect boat, but there is a reason they sell a fraction of what prop boat do. . Some things you didn't mention. 1) Noise. Don't tell me they are not. @larrybelt. ..... yes you need an education on her boats. Yamaha is statistically a more reliable engine than mercruiser, Volvo pentas, and certainly rotax engines. Any unless you are talking about engines 2007 and older , noise deadening advances have made the boats emit less decibels than a 19-21 foot sea ray. The Yamaha buckets are detached so that they reverse like a normal boat, the Rotax buckets are attached which causes it to steer backwards/opposite direction while in reverse which is very counter intuitive!
