2017 Triumph Street Triple 660 Review - The Best Learner Bike On The Market?

I take Triumph's LAMS-approved Street Triple 660 for a blast along Auckland's backroads. I had more to say but my GoPro died (evidently 65% battery isn't enough for a 40 minute ride) and 14 minutes is already plenty.

im intrigued with this bike, i rode a 300 ninja for the first time 4 days ago, it was my first time on a bike in 8 years the last one being a 125 thumpster and it ignited this passion inside me for bikes. my grandfather rides trumpys hes owned the likes of the thunderbird, bonneville and super sport. this bike has caught me in its web from the iconic triumph sound it produces to the shape of the bike its torqueyness and power. myself im a huge rotory head but honestly bikes are where its at .

I'll do my best but this one was loaned to me by Triumph so it won't be on this model unfortunately... But I have seen a few on the street with aftermarket pipes on and hoo boy they make a good noise!

Is it just the same engine as the old 660? I know what that sounds like and it does sound amazing, but i don't know if it will sounds the same...

More or less, yeah. Just the standard year-on-year tweaks to make it more efficient, smoother etc. But from what I can tell it's the same overall unit, so it should sound the same - especially with a proper exhaust on it!

Also does this bike retain it's value more because of it's specialised engine? I heard it does.

I would imagine so, they're also still quite new so the price is sitting at around 11k for a second hand one (2014).

That's very weird in England I have a Honda cbr 650 for the A2 licence but it's restricted from 90hp to 47 hp it's just a stopper on the throttle what can be easily removed. In England they have announced a triumph 660 like this and that has 94 hp so it can be restricted to 47 like my cbr.

Drew Taylor huh, must be the different systems at play. The Lams system here means learner and restricted license holders (not sure what that translates to for you) can only ride bikes up to 660cc and with a 150kW per tonne power to weight ratio. I haven't heard about a street 660 you can derestrict here but if it's coming I'm all for it!

Just seems strange that you can't get the full power as a 660 engine should produce at least 90 hp

Yeah it's limited to 55hp (40kW) to keep it under that 150kW per tonne ratio. I guess it can't be derestricted to encourage buying the 675 after getting the full licence
