Another superb review Mr. MF. Also nice to recognise some familiar roads that I rode when I wore a younger mans boots! I bought myself an MT-09 Tracer last year and it's becoming one of my favourite bikes across over a half century of riding. I thought you review was excellent. Based almost wholly on the riding experience and feel of the bike. Not bogged down by technical jargon and nit-picking. One or two comparisons from your own experience of other marques was helpful as well. All in all, a 'proper' riders review as opposed to some self indulgent 'expert' spouting trail, rake, power-to-weight and compression ratio's. Good man!

Well done ... another good wrap as always. I have been looking to downgrade from my Vulcan classic cruiser 1600cc (63 yrs young and wanting a lighter ride) and with your help, I think I have just found her. Vrrrooommm. I was thinking V-Strom 1050 XT, Versys 1000, MT10. But now with this 18 ltr fuel tank on the Tracer for touring the long distances around Australia, sports-like attributes, power, and with a good pillion seat for the boss :) It has sold me. Not too many fuel stops and more riding. Now for a test ride. Thanks mate you have been very helpful. Keep those reviews coming...Cheers from down under :) and keep well...

@@socialising6037 I don’t see why not, you’ve had plenty of experience on the KTM I take it? It’s all down to your right hand at the end of the day, it’s a pretty fast bike, it’s not too heavy and it handles reasonably well.

Great review, a bit of a 'dream' bike for me. I can't wait until we have some nice, gently used FJ-09's on the market in the U.S. for around $5K. One of the best features in terms of maintenance and reliability is the 28,000 mile intervals for valve clearance inspections and/or adjustments.

Great review! I traded my 2013 FJR1300 for a 2017 Tracer 900 (FJ-09 in the US) in June and you can imagine how nimble it seemed to me coming from the FJR. I did a video myself about the switch and also described the Tracer as a hoot. I love it! I thought I would agree with you about the headlights when I first got the Tracer but now I like them. The left is the low beam and the right is the high beam. When the bright switch is on, both are illuminated and you can ride like this in the daytime if you like. At night, having both on really illuminates the road very well from close up to a long way off. With the brights off and only the left light illuminated, you still have great visibility at night. In every way, the night time visibility is better than the 2013 FJR. I suspect that having the low and high beams in two different headlights simplifies designing the reflectors for the LEDs and makes them more efficient. By the way, in addition to the slipper/assist clutch, the 2017 Tracer has an improved ECU with much better fueling and an improved suspension relative to the 2014-2016 models.

Your right about the weight, it feels very nimble and rides like a supermoto. The engine is definitely the star of the show. I felt a little sore after a few hours in the saddle on my trip back to Calais but I toured 2 up with no issues. Had the Vstrom 650 and this think felt ballistic when I moved to the Tracer. It gets a bit flirty when you push on and the screen is poor but I'm 6'3 so I guess I'll always struggle. I'd love to hear the differences between my 2015 and the new model. Fueling isn't great on mine but I heard they improved it on the new model.

The two vs one headlights thing I've heard is basically what you said but the safety reason has to do with perceived distance. Because a bike's dual headlights would be somewhat close together a car motorist could think its another car a fair distance away and in reality its a bike that is almost ready to pass by in the other lane. I agree with you though...does look bizarre...kind of like when LED daytime running lights shut off while the indicator is flashing.

I've had an '02 TDM 900 since new and it still meets my needs after 135,000km but the Tracer would be absolutely perfect if it just looked 'nice' not bitsy with things stuck everywhere... oh well, I have a '96 T'Bird cafe to get my triple thrills on and the TDM for touring. My wife’s cousin and her husband ride with us on long all day trips, the bags will make a nice addition in that case. They have a big ultra classic Harley that’s fully dressed. Ha! I thought you'd like it. I'm loving mine. Just done a 2300 mile tour of Scotland no problem. An easy bike to live with. I particularly value your opinion as you have experience of so many machines and give unbiased and honest comparisons. I have a couple of gripes. The first bar of the fuel gauge is longer than all the rest and does nothing for 60 miles then disappears. Not very helpful. At least it has two trip recorders so you can reset one when you fill and monitor fuel range that way. My other gripe is the hardness of the seat. I speced the optional "comfort" seat but still found that too hard. I had it modified with a memory foam pad insert, which makes all the difference for long days in the saddle. When we took the cover off there was only about 5mm of soft foam over the hard foam base!

I have a question sir. I had the xsr900 until a car cut me off and i felt what its like to fly. I love the looksvof this bike and wish id gotten it , but ! my xsr was one of my whorst bike purchases it had a buzz in the handlebars i could barely ride it 10 miles. How does this bike feel between 3k and 6k rpm.

I'm thinking of getting one as well in the hopefully not so far future. Can you please let me know how do you think the windshield fares? I've been riding on my 2003 F650GS and I can tell you that at over 100km/h the wind is really noisy and begins to be bothering after some time riding with it, besides not being able to hear the intercom while riding, I always have to stand up on the pegs so I can hear better. Edit : I will be opting for the tall windshield just in case

Great review as always. Glad you enjoyed the bike. I love mine. Feel the same about the headlights. However whilst you rode in the day you perhaps didn't experience just how good that single light i, it's the best I have ever encountered on a Motorcycle so far. When filtering I tend to put on high beam during the day and have had car drivers fold their mirrors in as the light is so bright, but at least I know they know I'm coming. Addicted to the triple engine. Only downside I can find for the Tracer is what out there is better, what do I go for to replace her with so far nothing has ticked as many boxes as she does.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Nice one Charlie - out of interest have you ridden the XSR900?

Good review. I have 2017 Tracer 900. The seat isn't a little bit hard, but it's hard like wooden plank and really exhausting to ride :/

Late commenter! But I should say that I've just bought one of these and your review was bar far the most informative. I had an Mt07 here in Aus that I wrote off recently (that was a fun surgery to rebuild my finger) and I'm so excited to have a bike that's more "serious" haha! I did Sydney to Melbourne (2000km round trip) on an R3 and my God it will be much more comfortable on a tracer! Keep up the great work!

Congrats Joe and hope the finger is fully fixed! All the best - TMF

Yes Yamaha were very clever to change direction with there bike range, I think it is in direct competition with Triumphs Tiger 800 right down to the triple engine !! Its a great bike at a real world price with out a doubt!

+Neil Cole Agreed....and good to hear from you as ever - TMF
@tedwitus7 жыл бұрын
oh TMF you make shopping for a motorcycle so FUN! ~ except i can only get ONE bike and that still a year or so away.. so, i'll have to listen and watch (and eagerly await) more of your video reviews! (many for second or third time) ~ meantime, this bike is #1 contender (with a bullet ! )
@Farwalker2u7 жыл бұрын
You usually mention your impression of "flickbility" of the bike that your are reviewing in your videos, as you have here. I have no recent personal experience on motorcycles other than my Bonneville T-120 and a Honda CBR500. May I assume that "flickability" while subjective is some combination of weight, center of gravity, rake, trail, suspension and perhaps tires? How would this Tracer 900 compare to the new Triumph Street Triple RS (765cc)? I think this Yamaha at 210 kilograms or 462 pounds wet weights about 50 - 60 pounds more than the Street Triple RS . Thanks for producing and posting another great video.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Yep your assumption on "flickability" is correct - and this one scores very highly, much lighter than it looks and rides lovely....
@hudsonrilke7 жыл бұрын
Very nearly bought one of these but went for the boring option versys. Agree with you about one light on, seems odd
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say the Versys is boring - certainly feels more substantial than the Tracer....
@hudsonrilke7 жыл бұрын
TheMissendenFlyer no so hooligan like. Yeah i wanted something heavier for the windy conditions here. Still get blown around. Shudda got a Harley which is not something id never of thought id say. Heading to montana end of next week for a short tour. Just back from Yellowstone in a 36 year old motorhome.

me again, I own fz-09, 650 v-strom, yamaha raider, 2016 road-glide ultra, and one thing the harley shop said was to alway's turn off bike with kill switch, so now I do it on all my bikes, what have you heard?

I have heard that before but never yet heard a good reason why, have you? I tend to use the key....
@robertrobhog7 жыл бұрын
great video, you keep saying your only 5'8 and fit on the bike ok . its only your inside leg that makes the difference you must have a long inside leg measurement. I'm only 5'7 with 31" inside leg but I sat on a tracer 900 with the low seat and bareley tip toed ,so could not have one because I do a lot of heavy camping touring.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Fair enough - I think I have a 32" inside leg....an inch apparently makes all the difference!

As a VERY experienced rider in my mid-fifties, I’ve been looking at the XSR900, but keep hearing the adjective “INSANE”. I wonder if this FJ09 might be a better buy. Looks like the bikes are near identical, mechanically. I’ve watched your excellent videos of the other CP3s. How do they compare for comfort, performance, and value? I’m mostly a weekend rider and want to do a few over night trips. I’m really interested in your opinion. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Both great bikes - go with the one you like the look of most (I’d have the xsr myself)....

@PATRYK-R17 жыл бұрын
absolutely YES, I agree. I have done just over 2000miles on it and I have same things to say... i have owned few bikes before including sport tourers, and i think in my opinion Yamaha Tracer 900 is very first bike i really like so much and by the way, you can get the bike for affordable money.
@robertbates10797 жыл бұрын
Great review... I was waiting for you to shift to 'A' mode or animal mode, when I rode one in 2014 found the engine seemed too powerful for the back end and weedy chain, just as well it has traction control! Hooligan bike oh yes!.

Robert Bates oh Yeah. traction control OFF and mode A... you will be surprised how fast front wheel comes up :-)

Love your reviews. Am wondering how you think this stacks up against the Triumph Sport 1050? The Tracer just seems like such a good value package. Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
The Tiger Sport feels much more substantial, the Tracer 900 is much more agile and probably quicker. Personally I prefer the Triumph but I know I’m in a minority on that!

So MF, how does it compare to the GS? Are the differences huge given the big price difference Mine's coming up to 2 years old now and I'm starting to think about what to get next. I'd like another TE GS but they are now over 15k which is a lot of money so I'm looking at other options to consider including the Tracer. Also. .. have you ridden the Kawasaki Z1000SX as at around 10k that's another possibility. I don't want anything heavier or taller than the GS nor do I want to sacrifice performance so would like to know how it compares. Cheers Ade.
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
+adrianbarrie13 Yes the differences are huge - The Tracer feels much lighter and more nimble, might suit you if that’s what you’re after? ...not ridden the Z1000SX yet so can’t comment (but stay tuned!)....
@Bazza477 жыл бұрын
I'm not looking specifically at the Tracer, nor do I necessarily want something lighter/more nimble mate, just don't want anything slower or heavier so I'm exploring the options trying to get a feel for what's out there that doesn't have licence shredding potential every time you ride it before I consider test riding any. I've never had a Yamaha or Kawasaki either so don't know what the build quality is like compared to BMW or what the general riding/owning experience is like.

Great review. Is the tracer actually bigger than the mt09 or does it just appear bigger due to the larger fuel tank and wide bars ?
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
I think it just appears bigger for that very reason....
@triv72527 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty much the perfect bike except the engine vibration in the mid-range - maybe that smooths out with mileage?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice any vibes, perhaps they fixed it for the 2017 model????
@triv72527 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's me being picky, coming from a Triumph Explorer which was smooth to the point of boring! I test rode a 2017 model and found it 'gruff' on acceleration - maybe it's a characteristic of the bike.
@auscurrymaster7 жыл бұрын
Great review as always, TMF. Could you pitch this bike as a realistic alternative to bikes such as the BMW GS (albeit the Yamaha having far fewer bells and whistles), including in relation to pillion comfort and load carrying?
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Yes sure it could be, it delivers 90% of something like a GS but at probably half the cost (once you've specc'd up a GS - nobody buys the base model)
@Ben10twentytwo7 жыл бұрын
