Two things I did to my 2022 T9GT is a Vcyclenut ECM flash and changing the front sprocket from the stock 16 T to a 15 T sprocket. This 6% change in final ratio made it a whole different bike in terms of sprightliness and rpms are only raised by 350 rpm from this change. No difference in mpg is noticeable and the bike tops out in 6th gear now instead of 5th. Also starting fully loaded in 1st is much better with this change. The windshield is crap. But MRA's vario touring screen completely transforms the bike and eliminates that issue.

Good honest review, thanks. I'm not into adventure style bikes...had a couple of Multistradas and tried them with a range of screens, and found the Pikes Peak screen to be the best (more wind, but cleaner air). Here is something I wonder about. IF all that noise is the result of a nearly verticle screen? Then why oh why would manufacturers not simply move the base of screen far forward allowing room to angle the top of the screen at a far mor sloped angle? I realize this would dramatically change the entire appearance making a bike look radically different than anything else on the market but hey what works IS what is beautiful to many of us

Couple things seemed a bit off in this review. Screens can be replaced, and I have a feeling this one will have a lot of options. I went through three on my VStrom 1K and found a SHORTER screen with a different profile and smaller mirrors did the trick; and that was a legendary, brain-melting problem. But, not a deal killer. Just finished a 1400 mile, 3-day trip with it and I can hear just fine :). And considering the more cramped leg position on the 1000SX, probably the most direct competitor, I'm surprised with Neevesy's comments. That IS a deal killer, specially since the GT's bars, pegs, and seat adjust. It's super easy to get negative because of an effed-up screen (No excuse, Yamaha, FIX THAT!), but maybe he should've waited another few days for what seems could've been a more objective review. For its intended purpose, it seems to have hit the middle of the target. BTW, the GT $2K price delta is EASILY reconciled: heated grips, fitted luggage, U/D quick shifter, semi-active suspension, cornering lights.

@@hhyling8483 and rightfully so! Nothing more annoying than having wind blasting your face. I do wear ear plugs all the time so I am wondering if this is a problem
@exothermal.sprocket3 жыл бұрын
Even with ear plugs, you get your eardrums hammered for a few hours with low frequency pounding and it sure jacks up your fatigue level. I'd much rather listen to a good exhaust note than the million little hammers whacking my helmet. I've tried various screens on certain bikes (I am 6-2" but average torso length) and the only real solution is getting the shortest thing you can find, or take it off. But then some of the reason for an ADV is better wind protection than some UJM naked, or sports naked. One thing I have noticed on sportsbikes with fairings, the windscreens are curved from the mount to the top, both laterally and linearly. To just stick a straight piece of polycarbonate at 75° from vertical introduces massive pressure variance at the top edge of the screen, causing high speed air to dump and spin as it spills over the edge into a low pressure pocket behind the screen. All that swirling and dancing air slams into your helmet chin or face usually and that's the "million little hammers" sound. Seems if they curved the screen to dump the air into the rider at the kind of angle the air is already flowing, it wouldn't be so dirty and rough and loud. The automotive manufacturers know a thing or two about releasing air off the back of a vehicle with minimal drag and buffeting. Seems the motorcycle manufacturers could learn some from them. But then I prefer to put my head and shoulder tops into clean air, letting the full face helmet do the work of wind control. I sweat too much with no air flow around my helmet.

@@exothermal.sprocket just got my liscense, and did 3 test rides , and I noticed that the honda 1100 (cruiser) with no screen had NO NOISE but the others (ktm and yamaha) with small screens ,10-15 inch, made tremendous noise , really quit unbearable , maybe NO screen is best?
@allwheeldrive3 жыл бұрын
@@hhyling8483 I think it's really all about "clean" air. My Speed Triple naked was more comfortable than that crappy standard screen on the VStrom. The buffeting was killing my head. Just my 2 cents with regards to the points made: I think this is a dazzler for sure. Once you put an exhaust on it, and usually most tracer owners I met do, It's always one of the more head turners at meets and cafes (when moving, not sitting still) My problem is a used tracer GT in acceptable condition is 8k+ right now. Now the problem with that is there is another kid (two actually) on the block at a price range in the used market that really invade this bike's cozy little place. The S1000XR (Gen 1) and the Multistrada 1200/1260S. The 1260 multi costs almost the same as the Tracer used about 500-1000 more, the 1200 is much cheaper (6000-6500) and the S1000XR is right on the money (7500-8500) Now the XR is a superior machine to all of these ability wise, and fulfills and extremely similar role to the Tracer 900 GT (and i mention GT spec as it's the more high end/popular model and even that barely reaches base spec XR levels, which there are not many of). The tracer was really on my radar but the regular 900 is too barebones and old to be a meaningful upgrade from something like a Versys 650, and the GT would be meaningful but then you have the XR and the Multi which both knock the Tracer 900 out of the park. I realise it's not fully apples to apples, but realistically if you set yourself a budget of say 9k. You might be able to scoop a tracer with 5k miles on it. but for the same money you can scoop a fully specced, luggaged XR with like 10-15k miles on it. When I got out to buy a bike, the bang for the buck is fundamental, mileage is secondary, and realistically for 9k you can get an XR that'll last you a very long time. Service costs are quite bad on the Multi but the 1200 is also cheaper, and the XR is not that much more expensive than the Tracer 900. You're probably paying a 20-30% premium at most, and considering the bike is probably gonna be slightly cheaper you can make up the difference there. Obviously this is all for the USED market. Brand new is a different story, however if you're out there to get a touring bike once you start speccing the GT out with basics (boxes, QS, heated grips, little protection maybe) you're close at 14k. Now for 14k You can also get a barebones Gen 2 XR (which still has more goodies than the tracer) or spend a little more to spec it out, and at 16.5k you got the whole shebang. I feel like when you're ready to drop 14k on a brand new bike, not going the extra step to 16.5k to get the XR is like leading the race and then giving up on the last lap, settling for 2nd place. That's just my view of this bike. I think it is fantastic, but it's relatively advanced spec commands a price that takes it into the territory of the real big boys, and it's not quite up there.

Also swapped seat for a Bagster one, which sorted bum problems out; better firmer padding and better shape. May wait until both options avalable for Tracer 9 before pulling trigger.

This bike has had some great reviews, this is the first I’ve seen that’s slightly negative

I have a tracer 9 and are a little bit shorter 5”9. There is a little bit of buffeting but not much. All the other negatives I think is personal since I don’t experience them. An awesome bike in my opinion 😊

Great review. Am really waiting for you to review the new XSR900 - any clues on when you’ll get your mitts on one? Cheers

Great review Neevesy. I have a 900 and as a taller bloke have found a few flaws in it. The pillion peg position is atrocious (waaaay too close to the rider's pegs). The screen is noisy (I have put the smallest one I can find on it and just live with the wind). And the total weight capacity was bizarrely low. Seems like the new one adds some more fruit but hasn't really fixed the fundamentals.

Why only one of the lower LED lights stays on while riding? What about the other one?

Why is the cornering light at the front on the right always on and the left light is always off ? Never really seen one of these up close in person. Just wondering !

Perfect review! Though I am still lost whether I should by standard or GT version. What would be your advice if use bike for weekends short- mid tours and city commuting? Thanks in advance! Simas

Two bikes that need to exist, all considered: Kawasaki takes their beautiful Z900 engine and pops it into an MV Agusta Turismo Veloce sort of chassis, 5 gallon tank. Call it Versys 900 GT. Suzuki takes their excellent GSX-S1000 engine and pops it into a 10% scaled down S1000XR, 5.8 gallon tank. Call it GS1000GT or something along those lines.

I think Yamaha are not alone when it comes to noisy screen. However, I have had a Yamaha Super Tenere for 3 years and was on the point of selling it when I fitted a Givi Airflow screen. Now it will never win a beauty contest but now it is QUIET! Mine is for a Gen 1 but by removing the rubbish adjusters and accessory bar, the Gem 1 will fit the Gen 2 Super Tenere and it is a game changer.

Two big reasons I wouldn't buy, uncomfortable and the noise. Good honest review. And it needs shaft drive. Yamaha gave us this in the 70s with the XS 750/1100.

Very good review. How would you rate it with comparison to Africa twin? Looks like you were crouched on it and that it was a bit small on you....

Main reason i'll never buy another new Tracer,is after only 2.5yrs,i'm only getting offered 40 something % of the cost of the base model....huge depreciation,weird given how popular they are....rent one,hand it back!

Hi, thanks for review, you said that for tall persons is more apropriate a z1000sx. I am 1,87m and 82 kilos, do you think is better for me kawasaki ninja 1000sx? Best regards!

I have ridden 42,000 miles and visited 30 countries on my owned from new 2015 tracer. Screen is an easy fix, seat is not comfy despite mods.
@phillipbatho32133 жыл бұрын
What did you find worked for a screen? I have a 2015 also. No screen is much quieter and works great for dry summer days, but there's no protection. It seems any screen this size sends air to the helmet making lots of noise.

I have a tracer myself.. but have always hated the blue rims on the GT. It almost gives it a juvenile look to it.

Is the screen noise factor the only reason why you would take a Ninja 1000SX over the Tracer?

nah the Ninja 1000 is so much better value and better built than the Tracer
