My biggest mistake was listening to KZbinrs stating opinions as facts....that happens a lot these days. You are right about dealers putting in 8 qts instead of 10. The tick is oil pressure related, regardless of viscosity used. The best answer we have come up with after trying to diagnose everything from big end bearings bumping side to side, to DI noise, is that the tick is most likely from the "Hydraulic Lash Adjuster" on Piston #3. This particular spot is the most arduous path of oil flow to all the HLA's. The problem is, when the oil is cold on startup, there isn't any noise, because cold oil pressure is close to 40psi. As the oil warms up, the hot idle oil pressure drops. As it goes below 30psi, you may start slowly hearing the ticking sound get louder and louder as it continues to drop to 12-15psi at idle while the oil bypass is open. This low pressure drops even further as it has to reach the HLA's. By the time it reaches #3 piston HLA, the pressure is just low enough to cause the Adjuster not to fully inflate, and become lazy. This causes it to have a tiny gap between it and the lifter. So, in a rather non-synchronous way, it will tick as that tiny gap opens just slightly with each cycle of the lifter. As you increase engine RPM, the tick may become slightly more synchronous and noticeable until the engine RPM is high enough to make the oil pressure go above 30psi. Once RPM reaches close to 3,000RPM and the oil bypass then closes, this high pressure also fully inflates the HLA, and no more noise. To stop the noise, I use Ceratec. Ceratec increases the lubricity of the oil to a point where tight fitting HLA's will inflate easier, and make the ticking go away. The amount of Ceratec needed to stop the ticking varies with each car, as those tiny gaps slightly differ from car to car. My car only requires about 100ml (1/3 bottle) to make the noise go away. When I give it a fresh oil change, I start the car and let it warm up to hot idle. I then slowly pour in Ceratec while at hot idle until the ticking stops (~100ml). That way I can use one bottle for 3 oil changes. I use Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w-30, with only 1/3 bottle Ceratec (~$50 per oil change). The cost for oil is much less than trying to use boutique oil, which is not really necessary, unless the engine is for heavy duty use or frequent racing.
@Condor19703 жыл бұрын
@@BeardedFordTech I know the recommended weight is 5w-20. However, in 2018+, the manual does say for track use, they say to use 5w-30, as the higher viscosity provides better protection. Main reason they went to 5w-20 is to increase fleet wide GPM for gov't CAFE standards. I discussed this with Ford, and they do allow full time use of 5w-30 oil without affecting the warranty for normal use. In fact, some dealers and Roush warranteed dealers will recommend 5w-50 Motor Craft Full Synthetic for people who have superchargers installed and drag racing.

Nothing is going to get rid of the "spark knock". Just run a higher octane gas and every now and then a octane booster. It will quiet down. With Amsoil it may do the tick on startup after an oil change but will go away or quiet down a lot. You can also run 5w30 instead of the 5w20 that's helps a little too.

Valve slapping? You mean piston slapping? There are cases where cylinder one was scoring due to the plasma liners. Those the noise does get louder with rpm. The BBQ tick doesn't. F150 does it too and the diesel type knock noise mostly heard on the passenger side which can be quieter with higher octane fuel. Explorers f150s(with the v6) expeditions get cam phaser rattle on startup. That is fixed first with a pcm reprogram then if it still does it new cam phasers. We have to go through the process first. Engines do make a lot of noise. The 4 cylinders mainly just high pressure fuel pump and injectors. Yeah timing chains is just like the phaser noise. Great! explanation . I have a 2019 Bullitt, with the tick you talk about once in a while. To me an old timer it sounds like a lifter, however i'm sure it's what you're saying. One question I have is break-in oil? I was at my local Ford dealer today, wanted them to check my oil. Yes! sounds stupid that I guy who's rebuilt countless 289's and chevy 327's would ask how to check the oil. Book says check the oil with a fully warmed up engine, just allow the car to sit for 20min or so in order to let the oil drain back into the sump. When I went to the dealer today, they said "only check the oil when the engine is cold and has been sitting over night". Well whether checkin cold or hot the level still sits at the "ADD" reference on the stick. They then asked if I've had the oil changed since new? I told them that the car has only 7,300 miles now, and it's on it's third oil change. Their comment was "oh that engine has break-in oil from the factory and is supposed to stay in the engine for 3000-5000 miles. Changing the oil before that can compromise the engine. I reviewed the folder on my car, and saw that the Ford dealer that sold me the car new, scheduled the first checkup and oil service @ 500 miles. And that is when it was done. Sorry for this long story. In a nutshell: 1: Does Ford put special break-in oil in 2019 5.0 engines? 2: Any harm in the dealership changing the oil after the 1st. 500 miles? 3: Check oil hot or cold? Thanks
@BeardedFordTech2 жыл бұрын
Not a long story lol. Your car comes factory filled with 5w20 synthetic blend motorcraft oil. There is no break in oil. I don't know why they said 500 miles. Maybe missed a 0? Never go over 5,000 miles on an oil change unless you are using a superior oil. Like amsoil. It's what I use in all my stuff. The XL boosted good for 12,000 miles (just in case I miss my 5,000). You can check the oil before you start it. Pull the dipstick wipe clean reinsert then check to make sure you have oil. Then let it run to get to operating temp. Let it sit 5 min not 20. Then check. Those cars take 10 quarts of oil. I've come across issues where techs were only putting in 8-8.5. Motorcraft synthetic is a great oil too if you know your going to be changing it every 5,000 miles. So to answer your questions. 1. They do not use break in oil 2. Won't hurt it to change it at 500. But it was pointless cause there is no break in oil. 3. Best reading is hot. Let it sit 5 min after running to operating temp. Any other questions. Just ask!
@johnc14862 жыл бұрын
Wow! thanks for the quick response. As you confirmed, oil change at the first 500 miles did no harm to the engine, just possible overkill and a waste of oil. As well Ford does not fill the crankcase with special break in oil from the factory. I will check the oil in the AM cold and again after warming up the engine and allowing it to sit for 5 min per your recommendation. And you are correct! the techs under filled the engine on the last oil change. I noticed the low oil reading right away. The same service advisor that told me about the break in oil, also said that the coyote engines use a lot of oil by design . Not burns but uses. I know the Voodoo? I bought mine new , 2019 pp1 , change the oil at 1052 . I noticed a noise coming from the top of the engine and I can actually feel it by touching the fuel lines and the intake runners . It's intermittent and random . It's sounds like tapping on the composite intake with a small hammer or screw driver . I do not hear this when it's cold and I can hear it only at idle . Today it was doing it on the drive around town . After returning home I had the wife work the throttle and 1500 and hold and again at 3k and hold . It disappears with increase engine speeds . Turn it off for and few minutes , fired it up and it was gone again like it always is . Again random , broken and worn out parts don't heal them selves . My question is relief valve for the fuel pump ? You mentioned a valve in the intake ? Cam phasers doing their thing ? These engines are noisey compared to the engines of the early days with no FI and having four cams and 32 valves , there's a lot going on . My Vette has a 383 , solid lift flat tappet and it sounds like singer sewing machine . Again bad bearings and worn cylinders don't heal them selves . Got to be something simple or it would have blown up by now .
@BeardedFordTech3 жыл бұрын
Ye the fuel pump is located on the right hand side next to coil number 3. It takes fuel pressure from 65psi to 2600psi. To keep the fuel rails full. This happens at different RPMS and engine load. And is commanded by the PCM. There is a valve yes. It also takes into consideration the advancement or retard of timing due to phasers. As far as intake runners. Look on the back of the intake. See that valve. Some people have unplugged it and the noise you described went away. Plug it back in and it's random. Like you said broken parts don't fix themselves

I figured that the assembly lube being cleaned out of everything from that first oil change is the reason behind the "tick" being audible after the first oil change. Thoughts? I just bought a 2019 GT a week ago, when I started it for the test drive no tick. Only had 3k miles, when I came to pick it up, the dealer serviced it, oil change, etc. When I started it up to drive home the tick was there. Not really assembly lube. Most manufacturers assemble dry. That is great logical thinking though and it does make sense. And you only hear it after the first oil change. It's not hurting anything and no engine damage is occuring because of it. It can be annoying. But if your like me a car that runs great like that with no mechanical failure and no harm being done I can live with it. It's my favorite car and being a ford tech I drive different ones. @@marqb9531 the tick is normal it's intermittent. The light diesel knock sound usually on passenger side is normal and intermittent. The damage your thinking of is cylinder number one (passenger side front of car) scoring can occur from piston slap. It will be a knocking noise that does not go away. I would do a Google search of some local mom n pop mechanic shops around your area. Go by and talk to them and get to know a few of the mechanics tell them you are getting one by summer and would like them to check it before purchase. Most will do it free of charge. And yes I was also talking about the dealer service center as well. Have them check it. Get a copy of their notes. Then go to those places you talked to have them check it and get a copy of their notes. Then compare. I would start now by finding a good shop with good reviews. As a master mechanic and machinist, I can tell you that all that cerma is, is a 5 weight thin oil and does nothing more than any other 5 weight syn oil. The solution as far as an additive is RISLONE engine treatment which comes in 16 oz bottles and the use of conventional oil.
@BeardedFordTech4 ай бұрын
@EarlGuyton425 oh I quit using cerma aong time ago. I found out they lied through testing. It's not even a 5 weight. And ad a senior master myself you shouldn't use oil additive. If you need an additive you need a better oil. Which is why I only use amsoil. No additives at all. I wouldn't use cerma again if they gave me a lifetime supply

You didn't answer the main question. What CAUSES the ticking noise?
@BeardedFordTech3 жыл бұрын
Nothing. Even after tearing them apart no wear on rear of engine or transmission bell housing. I have another video comming out of a teardown. And the reason I say nothing is cause every engine that has been torn down there are no signs of wear on any component. If it was cams the tick would be constant and get louder with rpms. This is intermittent. Comes and goes. And when I say bell housing I'm referring to inside mainly where the noise is heard at the back lower end of engine toward bell housing as in torque convert on automatic or clutch on manual. But those would whine if bad. There is literally nothing worn. It just ticks. Some call it annoying. Some don't care. They have actually been doing it since 2011. Just harder to hear cause of the different oil pan on 2011-2017. I had. 2011 f150 that you could hear slightly. I just ignore it. Nothing to be concerned of.
@Condor19703 жыл бұрын
@@BeardedFordTech Well SOMETHING is causing it to tick. It's not nothing. It may not be harmful, but SOMETHING causes the noise, or the noise would not exist. So, my question still stands. What is the CAUSE of the tick?

@BeardedFordTech Жыл бұрын
Nah. It always starts after the first oil changed. Even if they over revved it wouldn't cause that noise. The bbq/typewriter tick has been around since 2011. More noticable on 2018-present. And it's always always always after the first oil change. As the oil gets used it will be less noticable. But when you change it again it will do it again. It's a normal noise.

@@BeardedFordTech that’s the weirdest thing I ever herd, what’s in the oil from the factory that keeps it from happening until new oil hits it? I even put 5w50 full syn in mine still did it until I just put Ceratec liqui moly and it stopped it immediately almost, crazy! But over revving it can cause a noise like that from a broken spring or collapsed lifter or damaged cam etc, plus it creates a Rod like knock with both that went away with CERATEC, I’ve built bunches of engine including my 5.4 Iron block gt500 engine twice and can not figure out what’s doing this outside of cam phasers which 10gt500 don’t have
