2018 BMW 330E CHECK DRIVETRAIN FIX/RESET

This is my experience with my 2018 BMW 330E.
The first symptoms of my car was a message to check drive train soon. I checked the diagnostic trouble codes and it had two codes for starter pinion timeouts. Then after a couple of days driving it the check engine light came on and it had some diagnostic trouble codes for the auxiliary battery.

Dave - Thank you so much for posting this procedure. I have a 2017 330e with the exact same issues (check engine light and check drivetrain notification) that all of a sudden came up. Being a hybrid I took it into the dealer and the quote for repair that came back was astonishing ($3300 !!!). They of course got a bunch of OBD2 error codes (same ones you got) that pointing to charging issues, except for that starter pinion stuff. They "recommended" changing the aged battery, but also the charging controller, and the IBS cable that reports the state of the aux battery to the controller, and then see what happens. A lot of overkill! to resolve an aged battery issue. They claimed that once the battery goes bad it could affect the other connected systems. I could not get over the fact that batteries wear out normally over time and stop taking the charge. This kind of stuff happens all the time in all cars. ---- The result .. I refused the work and followed your step by step process and it worked just as it did for you! Thank you for the battery link. I was able to find the OEM battery easy enough, but was impossible to get batteries shipped to me. Advanced auto parts saved the day. The dealer wanted $550 for the battery almost double what I paid at AAP. So THANK YOU again! Have driven the car about 60miles since the change and all systems are OK.

Is your car under warranty? The battery should be covered. Did the drivetrain error or start stop error go away?

There were two options in your battery maintenance menu on the scan tool, looks like you registered the first battery which is the one in the trunk. Not the additional battery, which is the one in the front.

You didn’t need to register the battery. You just re registered your trunk battery

Just replaced the aux battery on my F30 330e thanks to this video. Battery was £78 from BMW dealer. The error disappeared as soon as I drove the car and it started the engine 😀 Just need to get the battery registered as BimmerLink will only register the main battery and not the aux one - confirmed by BimmerLink support 😟

Actually you can register the front battery as well. Once you swap it with new battery, use ISTA+ and go to Battery > Voltage > Starter > Register Aux Battery option. If unsure use Foxwell NT710 Scanner to register Aux battery. Start stop function is only related to the battery in the trunk/boot which is an AGM battery. You don't necessarily need a AGM battery for the battery under the bonnet at front you can use a standard battery and majority of the EU/UK customrr swap that with Vatra B36 V12 44 aH or Bosch S4000 Battery.

I have the same message and engine light on. With my OBD scanner, which is a regular one, it's giving me the code for the vacuum pump control circuit open. The voltage on both batteries is over 12.8v but my car won't run on electric only gas

@@marianvladutionita9015 glad to seen it's working for you a customer supplied his own battery for me to fit and it was the one above. BMW did a recall for the starter and told him he had a battery code etc.

I got the message when I unplugged too quickly at a public charger. I'm not sure if it's cos there's still charge flowing in the cables but as soon as I started the car it was under the impression battery no longer charges. After 3 restarts I got no message & was able to drive in full electric no issues. No warning message again although not had chance to connect an obd.

Hi Dave - many thanks for this , very helpful and easy to follow- quick question , once you have replaced the aux battery , and you go to register the new aux battery using the 7910, how does one know its the aux battery that is being reset and not the main 12V battery in the trunk ? There is no option on the 7910 for main battery or aux battery. - many thanks

I believe only the aux battery can be reset.

@@sohailsiddiqi5905 Actually, the opposite is true. The main battery (in the trunk which is AGM) needs to be registered when changed. The aux battery, which isn’t an AGM battery, doesn’t need to be reset. The hybrid high voltage battery, is an entirely different battery that this video did not address.

This was awesome. Last year I paid BMW $3000 because they said the battery is hard to get to and I had to ch as mid my other battery too. I hope I can get my battery for free since it is less than a year old. Thank you.

Did you upgrade the display? I have a 2016, 330 E. An early build it has id4evo :( Even though it has almost every option top /side view cameras Heads up display stop and go cruise control. It would be nice if I could upgrade to id5 I was just not sure because there are different menus with the Edrive

Hi Dave, I have the same car as yours. 2018 BMW 330e US model. And I have the same message since three days - "Drivetrain: Check Soon" message. I do not have engine lights on or any other message. I ordered the OBD scanner that you linked here to scan if I am getting same error codes as yours. I have a question though, after changing the battery did you face any issues again till date, has it been working fine? Secondly, I'm having a hard time finding a H3 battery and for some reason AAP guys are telling me that my car should have H6/H7/h8 batteries(which I think are too big and not the correct fit). Also, how long do you think is it ok to drive this car as is if it is okay to drive with that message on (I need the car for the next two days after that I am fine and I can find the battery and change it).

I have not had any problems since I replaced the auxiliary battery. The only place you are going to find that battery besides, the dealer is at advance auto parts look in the description it is not call an H3, but this battery will work the cold cranking amps are Just slightly lower.

@@Itssuperdave So I ran the diagnostic test using the Autophix scanner tool and I only got two error codes - 21A511 and 21A50A: Starter system, pinion starter : Time out successively occurred multiple times. I tried clearing them but 21A50A doesn't go away. Also, I ran a full system scan, and it gave me a 2228C8 - Starter unit, auxiliary battery: Aged auxiliary battery. Now I am confused whether to change the battery or to got the a dealership. I am out of warranty period as of now.

I have the exact same error messages coming up on our 2017 330e. Took it to BMW and they charged me $200 to run the diagnostic. Told me the aux battery is bad but they also told me I need replace the IBS Cable at the same time....$1600 fix. Do you think replacing the IBS cable is excessive?

@@Itssuperdave it’s the Intelligent Battery Sensor cable, that informs the battery management computer module on the state of charge and age of the battery.
