You’re 💯 correct Matthew. On 20 January 2023 I changed Ignition Coil and spark plugs on my BMW 116i F20, the Drivetrain disappeared and the car is no longer having a rough idling nor loosing power.

I've had my 2014 550i to the BMW dealer 3 times now. Nothing shows up. Drives fine after a bit of resting of the car. It's very inconvenient. I've had 2 fuel pumps replaced. I watched another video and it said anything from chargers for phones in a car can lower battery power and cause a power loss. Can be anything. My car has been scanned 3 times. The BMW dealer mechanic hit a pothole while testing the car and blew a tire. So now I get a new tire and alignment. Strut is fine. These are very delicate cars. Also letting it sit to long can cause the drivetrain malfunction. I've had smoke white smoke come out and nothing shows up. It's been at the BMW dealer for a week now. Pick it up on Friday so tomorrow. I'm having my guy bring the loaner back cause I do not wanna drive it home. Lol. We live in the River Valley with steep hills. But a person should be able to live anywhere and have this car and not have issues. Such a frustrating situation.

@@mattsbeamer need some advice, got drivetrain malfunction msg, it’s come on a few times in the last week, I have a 66 plate bmw 330e, light goes off after cooling car down, I noticed the temperature gauge is temperamental, doesn’t always warm up, car doesn’t go in to limp mode, I do feel a tug and a bit lumpy performance, used a recommended tool reader came up with pinion starter timeout several times. I’ve been told it’s the timing belt, not sure myself any advice would be amazing car currently on 89k and hybrid battery charges normally too

Have had this error thrown twice now on my 330e. On both occasions it was while on the motorway at about 65 and using cruise control and then had to touch the brakes. As you would expect, this should simply disengage the cruise control, but on these occasions it seems there's problem causing the drivetrain or gearbox to decide there is some kind of problem, probably regarding torque delivery before the cruise control disengages. The engine wasn't heavily loaded or had been previously, just a gentle journey, so no high temperatures or engine stress involved. Limped home without switching off the engine (luckily, the stop/start didn't kick in when I had to stop). Will get it booked in to read the codes (my code reader won't read this car). Just been serviced. Latest software installed. Seems like a glitch somewhere between ECU and gearbox controllers.

@@JackRobinson63 It was a faulty HV battery control unit and two failed battery units. I had been complaining that there was a battery fault for over twelve months. The dealers first fix attempt was the usual firmware update, which, not surprisingly, had no effect whatsoever. I believe that the engine ECU and battery system were not working together correctly when you touched the brakes and the engine ECU decided to disable the HV powertrain. It is now fixed and the HV battery is supplying 18 miles coverage. It took 5 days to find, get warranty approval, get parts and do the fix though.

Good Video. I have a F20. The IAT sensor become dodgy and popped the drivetrain error every 20ish miles. Another was overtaking at 60mph, popped a coil pack during overtake, felt like the rear axle fell off when dropping into limp mode. Simple errors, but the BMW ding is very frightening. Even just telling the low outside temperatures.

Also, an auxiliary turbo water pump become blocked, this can light up the drivetrain error with no limp mode. Common fault, plastic pump/blades that continues to carry hot fluids away from the turbo after the car is turned off. It is not a required part for the running of the engine. it will run absolutely fine without it. it'll just reduce the lifespan of the turbo very slightly.

I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday, as soon as the turbo wants to come in the car goes into limp mode and the drivetrain warning comes up. I then checked the vacuum line that attaches to the engine cover and discovered that the hose had a small hole the in the size of a toothpick, right after where it attaches to to the engine cover. After cutting the damaged part of the hose off, and reattaching it, the car was fine and the issue resolved. That something so small can affect the car like that.😀

My car got this Malfunction code for the Drivetrain ...2013 535xi ..Turned out to be the cartridge inside the oil filter was not replaced when they changed my oil..Got a new cap and cartridge for the filter..and that fixed the problem.

I own a f20 116i from 2013. It started having the drivetrain warnings. Since 2022 it's come up 6 or 8 times. I have a basic DTC and when scanned shows no fault codes. Its clears & shows (so far) none of signs mentioned. We do run petrol low often. I'll take to garage for more pro DTC read & see soon & let you know. I'm hoping it won't damage engine waiting, there's oil & coolant so fingers crossed.

My issues so far on my x4 bmw cutt off on me when I use my ac I was stuck in the middle of the street it was off for 16 mins then it started back up ...this was the second time my car has done this smhhh in the first time it said something differently like the fuel system.. but when I took it to the mechanic nothing came up on the diagnostic maybe thiers a particular scan will be needed because in georgia it's hard to get your vehicle serviced at the actual bmw dealership tho it takes months to get scheduled in ...but thanks for this video it gives me some hope ...I want ever purchase another bmw ever again 😫

I have an F150 that uses low octane gas, and a 750. I’ve had the 750 for 3 years and for the first time I pumped low octane into the BMW. Within an hour I got the drive train alarm and the engine vibrates while idling, poor acceleration. I suspected it was the fuel, so I drove it at low speeds to empty the tank. Filled with high octane, car runs fine, but the alarm won’t clear.

Hey, I’d love a 750i, wonderful cars. When my F20 got to low on fuel (so dirty), the error kept popping up after a few tanks then it disappeared. Hopefully it will be the same for you. Good luck.

I had the same problem on my BMW X5 2008 model, just couldn’t work out why the DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION comes up on dashboard and car goes into limp mode, after managing to get my mate to inspect it thoroughly and connect diagnostic machine, found out today that the E CLUTCH is gone, which basically means I need to get new gearbox or recondition the old one, still drives perfect so going to make the most of it before it really breaks down lol 😂😎🦋🐝🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

@@chewaynemcfarlane6409 sadly this did not fix it, I added some gwynnes fuel dry to a full tank of gas as i noticed the car was dropping revs in gear change (3rd), the car drove like a dog until i used up all that fuel,, when I refilled the car it drove great, i still get drivetrain warnings now and then but the car carries on driving great and the warning just goes away.. vehicle status shows no faults, I am thinking is this just a computer fault ??

I really like your presenting, and explanation but mostly I like how u r reassuring me cuz I thought I had a totally destroyed gearbox, I have a 640i gran coupe and I accelerator roughly to merge on highway and I got that warning plus "full performance not available". The symptoms I had were similar to rough changing of gears even when I put it on cruise control, it kept on changing gears (or at least felt like manual rough changing of gears). I'll get it checked over the weekend but I really hope it is not the gearbox

@@mattsbeamer I couldn't wait till weekend so... It turns out that the engine air intake pipe had a crack somehow and when I accelerated the pressure broke a hole in the pipe. Naturally there wasn't enough air going into the engine so it had to shut off the full performance. The part will take 3 weeks to arrive from Germany but I'm overjoyed that it has nothing to do with the gearbox or the engine itself For those interested in how the crack started in the first place, a friend of mine told me he had a similar issue twice in the past 3 years so I guess it isn't that uncommon

Driving a 2011 F09, GT 535i. This alarm persists occasionally, but leaves no fault code for diagnosis. Seems only when under load, accelerating. Turn car off, no code when turning back on. Has 86,000 km only despite 13 years old. Great car despite the issue.

“Ultimate driving machines” should drive the way you want it to drive. Slow fast whatever… Same issue on my 2017 650i xdrive. Has only 40k miles. Took it into BMW, they replaced all the coolant lines. Error occurred again less then one week after having my car back. a $110,000 car should not have major mechanical issues with so little miles.

I know on most bmw you can get the code and unlock the system by adding up the last 5 digits on VIN however when I unlock mine Error codes not in the list. I had a drive train mode on my bmw116i . My mechanic fixed the leakage on a turbo and water level. But they reckon i need to change my timing belt as the engine light turns up as well. My mechanic reckons it is a big job to change the timing belt.

@@mattsbeamer Just a quick update . I changed the engine for $6k. Went to other mechanic and he said too complicated to change the timing chain. But before that symptoms were just a crackling noise on the dashboard when the engine heated. There was no symptoms except the drivetrain error. But now the car drives like i have just purchased. The engine I purchased had already done 85k from wreckers. Hopefully it will last me .

Great channel with great videos, I am having some issues you may help on based on your experience with this engine, I have the message of drivetrain malfunction, one coil pack was failing I got it replaced along with spark plugs, now same coil (new) failed again, replaced with a new one and also spark plug, but now cylinder is not working, I swap coils and failure still in the same cylinder, so all coils and spark plugs are working but no spark in that cylinder, do you think there is a DME issue or something else comes to mind?

I have bought the exact same car as you, great car but now I have DMU /ECU issues, had to pull it out and have it shipped to England for repair (i'm in Sydney). BMW quoted me AUD 5000.00 to replace vs self repair of AUD 1200.00. Yes I also had LIMP mode as a result of ECU crashing out.

Hey, what is the error code you are getting. It may be worth checking the fuses, under the bonnet. Try fuses 24, 32, 54 and 63

Hi All, I’ve got this error on my dash by just heading to the shops. I was in sport mode but was not thrashing it. I took it to the mechanics and he scanned with the OBD and nothing came up. No errors. The car drives fine, no shaking or start up issues. Not sure what it could be. I bought new spark plugs and coils and will probs replaced them anyways. Then take it to another garage to get them to scan it as well. Mechanics test drove the car and said the clutch, engine everything seems fine

Driving car into town today and went to overtake and the car started vibrating really hard. Thought i’d somehow lost traction and went for it again and same result except the code appeared. From then on the drive back home the car had a light shake and when at stop lights the car idled higher than usual and shook pretty bad. I had a similar situation with my e36 years ago. Did you get a fault code? It’s worth changing the cool packs around (after disconnecting the coil plug) to see if the fault code changes. A misfire code would be P0300. (The last two digits will tell you which cylinder has the misfire. P0301 would be cylinder 1 while P0312 would by cylinder 12 on a v12 car.

Hi Matt. Thank you for all you do! SO helpful to all of us. My 2011 535i gave a drivetrain warning but no performance issues. Took it to the dealer after about 6 months of on and off warning messages. They replaced EPDW pressure converter/charging pressure actuator. At the same time found oil pan leak, rear differential bushing cracked so had all that done. Less than 3 months later the warning light appears again. Any ideas? THANK YOU!

You are in the same situation as me I have the same vehicle!! I had that pull up I figured the spark plugs needed to be replaced bc that’s one of issues that can arise they had never been changed the shop I took it too stripped 2 cyclinder heads brought it to another they were able to put helicoils in they said it was misfiring bc I needed a whole valve cover and I needed a ignition coil. They replaced two. Now I can’t even take the turn pike without it pulling up. I went to pass this person drunker than cooter brown going 35 in a 55 last night drive train pulled when I went to go the speed limit the whole car shook last night the whole way home.

Got the error due to worn out clutch. Sports mode and launch control triggered the error. Driving in comfort and eco-pro are okay and no problem. Will be sorting out my clutch soon by bmw specialise garage.

Hi, I have this issue on my 2017 4 series gran coupe, the drivechain issue pops up intermittently when I am driving or driving off, I took it back to my car dealer as I have guarantee, they replaced the inlet manifold (they said it was clogged), however today I still have the same issue. Scanning the BMW reveals no related error codes at all. Can someone please advise? This car has been very problematic for me since buying it, the dealers have so far had to change the AMP, SOS battery and inlet manifold! its a 67 plate with 26k mileage.

It happened to me the first time with my 520dw. BMW diagnosed it as low fuel pump breakdown and it was replaced at the cost of 1650 Aus $. I was driving it home from the BMW and the car stopped before I reached home k kms away from the BMW. second diagnosis was one of the fuel tank sensors gone off. Solution suggested was fuel tank replacement. Fuel tank came but without the sensor. i’m still waiting after one month. Rent a car costs so far $ 3000 plus. And the new tank replacement cost 3450.000. Quoted. This is a real let down.

I went to the specialist and it appeared that there was a problem of high oil pressure and a solenoid sensor..I took out the sensor and cleaned it and found it in new condition..However, the error appears along with the engine light..I am very angry..I hope someone solves my problem

Was a faulty fuel pump relay, the current one was corroded. Replaced it and the problem was gone for good. Relay sits behind the passenger wheel arch. This was a year ago.

Very good video, i also have this drivetrain error only when i start the car and immediatly drive, if i put the ignition on , disable start stop and after start the car and wait about 3-4-5 minute, then everything it’s ok, i’m doing this thing and for about 8-9 days the error don’t appear, beflre that i went to a garage they put the test and tell me to change the battery , and the fuel pump... changed and the error still appear, now i do this trick that i said earlier and god help me to not appear anymore, if error pop up again i will go to bmw to put their test on and check.

Hi matt. I have exactly the same car as you. I had my water pump changed on the turbo a year ago and about 3 months ago I have been getting low coolant messages. Had a pressure test done by garage and they said there was a little coolant loss but only to fill a void (not sure they knew the real reason). Since then I have had the dreaded drive train message saying "continue the journey at a moderate speed. full performance not available. Have the problem checked by service". Been monitoring coolant level and it keeps dropping very very slowly but no sign of any external leaks. Car seems to drive as normal.

Hey, Liam, sorry to see you have got a coolant issue. If they could tell there was a slight coolant loss, couldn't they tell where it was going? I am guessing you had this error in the past, when you had a faulty water pump on the turbo. Did it give the message saying that there was a blockage? Have any fault codes come up on their system? :)

I had a slightly different message with the water pump issue. i didn't have a message saying there was a blockage, just the standard drive train message. I am taking it back into the garage tomorrow to hopefully find some answers, just praying its not internal.

@@Liam-oh1jf Hi Liam I hope your car is well. I had (kind of) the same issue. For me it was the auxiliary (secondary) waterpump on the turbo was leaking. Which resulted in triggering a pressure sensor and cutting off the turbo due to low pressure. After replacing the waterpump (170 EUR) it is fixed. The error message only showed when > 3500RPM and more than half amount of throttle. Hope this helps.

@@roymeinders5877 @matts beamer Cheers Roy. Unfortunately it is bad news. Garage phoned me up and said they have found the possible culprit to the leak. It was coming from the back of the engine, so I thought ok, not too bad, possibly just the sensor that sits back there as this is a known part to leak from. But no, they ran a pressure test and found the leak was coming from the outlet system that sits at the back of the engine and that it is impossible to get to unless the gear box is removed. The part is only around £45 but the labour is probably going to cost an arm and a leg considering I am now out of warranty. I did notice a loss in coolant at the end of last year when I was still in warranty but the garage was unable to find any possible leaks and just put it down to 'a void that was filled within the system' after running the first pressure test. Now I have taken it back out of warranty as it was still losing coolant and suddenly they have found the leak so therefore all costs will not be under warranty. If they just checked a little further in the first place I wouldn't be having this problem and it would just be fixed under warranty. Not a happy bunny :(

@@roymeinders5877 Hi mate, I had the drive train issue but no power restriction or anything just a message and scanned it but no fault code came up. I looked online and said it was the auxiliary pump so I’ve ordered that. However, when I got the codes read I had nothing show up but cleared them anyway, the drivetrain issue isn’t showing up anymore. I’ve ordered the part from Bmw do you think it’s still worth changing? I'm having an issue where my 530i 2013 (N53 Engine) runs smoothly but won't engage in gears... to elaborate, when I try to shift to D or R or N it will go back to P instantly after releasing break, and after a few tries it will just stick to P. No error codes on my scanner, will try my friend's scanner tool and see if it shows something. Any ideas how to fix it?

Just had this in my Mini on startup. Its January and about -2. Very cold and frosty. Haven't driven my car for 5 days prior. Amber warning light comes up. I feared the worst. I sat in the car with the engine running allowing it the warm up. 5 mins later I turned the engine off and waited 2 minutes before restarting. No warning light this time. I drove around for a few miles before coming home. Car felt a bit sluggish but no cut outs and juddering. Hoping it's nothing serious.

Hello! I did reply the other day, but youtube didn't post my replies for some reason. I hopefully will do the coolant in a few months when the weather picks up. Some places say the coolant needs to be done every 30K or 2-3 years. Some last a lot longer.

@@mattsbeamer hi, mine never changed in 8 years and also it is time to change transmission oil. my mechanic says transmission oil cooler leakage into transmission oil is a common issue so it is better to change cooler before it leaks. because of this he advise me to change coolant, radiator and transmission oil at the same time. what's your opinion?

@@neizliyim Hey, I did make a video on when it would be a good time to change the ZF8 gearbox oil, I haven't made a DIY video thou. Changing it at the same time will most likely save you money in the long run. The cooling system on BMW in general isn't their strong point.

I picked up a 2017 340i with under 25,000 km on the engine. I've received the error message twice now, but with a simple restart the message seems to go away. It was roughly a week before the message popped up a second time. I also live in pretty cold climates so I'm hoping that it's just the battery needing to warm up. Do you suggest I take the car in to get diagnosed?

Hey, sorry for the reply :) if you just bought the car, it maybe worth pulling over (in a safe place) and recording the evidence that you have this message, and showing that it disappears when you restart it. Hi, I done a diagnostic scan on my F30 couple of days ago and came up with code 20A703. It says last occurred at around 53000 miles and now im in around 56000 miles. I cleared the codes but when i do a re scan it still pops up. Any help? Thank you.

Hey, I was looking into it for you. It's not a code that I have had before. It seems to pop up, when the car detects that something in the cooling system is getting too hot, or something in the cooling system is failing, like a water pump, thermostat, etc. The codes show that the car went into limp mode. Maybe there are some other fault codes which can go hand in hand, with this code. Sorry, I am not much use. Good luck :)

Yes my car was on limp mode due to over heating with a failed thermostat, which has been replaced, unfortunately the code is still there and doesn’t seem to want to go away. I have e a f31 320i 2013 manuell gearbox. After driving on crusecontrol by low speed ( constand 60 miles / h) the Orange lights come on and message" reduced Engen power. Contact your dealer". After a couple days and several starts the problem dissapear for mabe a couple monts.. it happen onley on cruise , constand speed. So when the engine use low fuell and maybe pump fall asleep?

Regarding smoke I checked my pcv valve and f20 118i with the N13 engine tends to smoke a bit at times. I took it to my mechanic and he can't find the issue. Is it normal for it to smoke like this or what could be the problem

My dpf was broken so had a mew one fitted but still have a drivetrain error. Could it be because the fault wasn’t cleared or would my car clear it itself? If the latter does this mean my car still needs to be fixed?

Hey, if the repair has been made, you are best off resetting the error, to see if it comes back. But before you delete it, just make sure that no other errors have popped up. I hope that made sense :)

Brilliant thanks buddy. Mines been on for about two years. Fault code said dpf. Cleaned and made no difference. Now and then it judders a bit on acceleration but overall ot drives absolutely fine. Not had any chance to have it looked at again. I did change the egr valve which seemed to help but the light stayed on. Occasionally it will be rough on idle but only when its a very hot day and it is rare. It is a 116d MSport 2013 F21... Any extra tips guys? I'm thinking it could be in need of a dpf as like Matt, i drive really easy. Are there any connectors which may be worth checking? I do know it had a minor bump before i got it

Hey Tina. It won't always tell you what the exact problem is. It will give you clues. If the battery is low, it will display lots of false errors. :)

Hi I have had this now 3 times in 2 months, on my '18 X6 3.0 D. seems to happen more in comfort mode then in sport mode. also seems to happed when going up steep hills slowly transmission seems to get lost and try to downshift then upshift then I get the xdrive system error and it goes into limp mode which maxes our at like 12kph. if I shut off and restart in 5 min. its fine again. since its a diesel it can't be plugs or coil packs, fuel filter? I was thinking to upgrade the ECU software on the xdrive and transmission modules using eSys and see if there is any improvement. I will check the error codes next time as I just flashed the EVO head unit to add CarPlay and updated the maps also. any diesels with similar issues?
