BMW’s new X2 compact crossover packs loads of style, combining historical design touches with some new twists. The round logos on each C-pillar recall BMW’s sporty coupes of the 1960s and ‘70s, while the X2’s trapezoidal twin-kidney grille with slats bending inward is a first for the brand. The new car costs more and fits a little less than the X1 but looks and drives better and offers version 6.0 of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. Support for Apple CarPlay is available, but costs $300.
All X2s get the same engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder also used in the X1, and pair it with an 8-speed automatic to deliver 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Power will get delivered to all four wheels in xDrive versions or only the front wheels in sDrives. Our reviewer wished the transmission didn’t hesitate to upshift under full throttle but had lots of fun driving the X2 and appreciated the head-up display’s use of accurate intersection graphics instead of generic ones.
