Any good suggestion about a portable laptop + AORUS gaming box 1070 setup (which means a portable laptop with relately powerful CPU and TB3 with 4 PCIe lines) Previously I thought xps 13 9370 is the most suitable laptop, but now Im a bit loss. BTW you are the first one who analyzed that xps 13 i7 version is useless, damn right!

Guys this is one of the things with Dell as you can’t really say which unit would click - I have been using the silver maxed up edition with 16 GB RAM and i7 for last 10 days and thermal has been spot on, my issue is with bloody Killer WiFi as it slows down for some strange reason and then picks up speed again. Screen is hands down the best, don’t expect amazing sound from a 1W speaker they are ok, well who’s this for then? Not for gaming but most definitely for medium productivity users. I run a win2012 R2 VM and I bought this mainly for the form factor and it hasn’t disappointed me. One could argue there are cheaper models on the market but this screen makes every other laptop look thing from the past. It’s a great review btw a lot of details 👍
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the screen is really nice. Shame I have that issue on the left hand side. Yes, my Killer 1435 has been poor on the 5Ghz band but I have had issues with my router so it could have been that. Never a fan of the 1435 really, I had it in an AW and it would drop signal when downloading large files like games. What CPU temps and average clock speed are you seeing on your i7 under sustained load? One other viewer on his I7 is getting 98 on Cinebench , averaging 3200 Mhz. I might try the HP Spectre 13t, have you tried that one?

Awesome job!! Thanks for testing egpu performance on this laptop. But it is so strange to see egpu performance on this one failed compared to yoga720. Since yoga has just 2 pcie lanes. Dose it really matter this little in egpu performance? Maybe you can test it out by comparing egpu performance on 9560 to it on 9370. Since i5-7300hq have similar performance with i5-8250u and 9560 has only 2 pcie lanes attached to its TB3 port.

@bradd59616 жыл бұрын
I take your point about the i5 to i7 performance increase vs value for money, but the main issue for some regions (eg Australia ) is that in order to get a decent SSD size (ie 512 and above) you need to go for the top of line i7 model.
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Brad D yes indeed, which again I don't like as they are forcing you based on storage. It is probably more prudent to put your own SSD in and save some money. Here in the USA it is $800 difference to get the i7 , an extra 256GB storage and an extra 8 GB ram. 8 GB RAM is probably ok for most people and you can buy a sata 512 GB SSD for $110. I know that's not for everyone as it is more work but I for one would rather save that $700 and have a spare SSD for a rainy day..

Hi steve, thanks for the great review! I watched numerous reviews of the xps 13 and can say that yours is the best i've seen. Question though, i plan to use the aorus 1080 egpu with it, will it still be worth it with the i5 cpu and 8gb? I will undervolt and limit the turboboost like you did. How much will the temps (~80 deg) affect longevity?
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Mark Ong thanks Mark! Yes, it does sound strange having to limit the turbo boost but unfortunately if you don't you won't get full speed anyway 😂 It's the nature of these 15w CPUs I'm afraid. I tested the same eGPU in this video and the XPS 13 performed on par with the yoga 720. It's definitely worth while as it allows you to play games at settings you otherwise couldn't but I would get the gtx 1070 one. The CPU limits performance and you also lose about 14% due to the connection. I did review that eGPU so you might want to check that out. I also showed the XPS 13 playing VR games attached to the same box. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml7SkIhtp7-nhqs
@mark-vh7ef6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I'll check that out too. I'm a bit on the fence on this or the previous xps 13 9360 version. I'm considering the better battery life of the previous version mostly though. If i use the 9360 version with the aorus 1070 box, will it perhaps perform on par with the 9370?
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
I would say so. I think the previous gen does make sense, save some money too !
@mark-vh7ef6 жыл бұрын
But since the 9360's thermal solution has only one fan, would it materially affect the throttling when used with the aorus 1070 box?
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Mark Ong The temperatures are lower when using the eGPU since the hd620 is doing nothing.

I just did a test on PUBG and I'm getting about 5fps more than you on the integrated graphics and for some reason my temps are lower on the i7 8550U. I played for about 30mins and the max temp was 87. That temp was on power in performance mode. I will do a video at some point once my egpu arrives. Could you link some of the software you use so I could use the same in my tests.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. What clock rate is your CPU averaging at ? I measured at max performance across the board, apart from battery test. I used HWinfo64 for measuring clock speeds and temps and Throttlestop to alter the multipliers and undervolt. Have you tried BF1 ? That typically gets things toasty..
@Fickle-Gamer7 жыл бұрын
Just tried BF1 at 720p on low and get about 35fps in single player and 22-32 on a 64 player server. Temps were fine with a max of 81 but when playing they stayed around 70. Multiplayer pushes they CPU to 100% but single player the CPU is only at 30% Average of 2100MHz. I'm running the monitoring software on a second screen (Type C) and the CPU does go up to 94 but only for about 2 seconds when the game loads. It must be something to do with the time it takes for the fans to kick in as the CPU throttles at that point.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Yes, 2100 Mhz is a serious throttle. So much for yours boosting to 4 Ghz... You can try and force it using Throttlestop and changing the Speed shift + EPP to the value of 1

@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
I've not used a Mac but they have a great reputation. I guess much would depend on what software you want to use and is any more tailored to the Mac versus Windows. Of course you can use Bootcamp on the mac and have the best of both worlds....The XPS 13 was certainly a nice machine though.

Hey I was considering getting the new xps i7 with 16 gigs of ram. I need it for video editing, some photoshop and adobe illustrator, do you think I should go for this or somethinh else?
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Harshal Desai it performs pretty fast, is it the weight or screen size that is your deciding factor ? I'm looking at the gram 15 and that weighs the same in a 15" screen. I haven't done tests yet but it could be another option. But the XPS 13 is very nice, shame it gets hot and throtttles, but if you lower the boost Multipliers like I did you get solid performance.
@harshaldesai11266 жыл бұрын
OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy screen size is the main factor, need something portavle cause i have to travel a lot. What are your thoughts on the 13 inch macbook pro? Thank you for your response and I love your reviews!
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Harshal Desai Apple is upgrading them to the same quad core CPUs . They will have the same thermal restraints as everyone else but so far Dell is the only one to allow max turbo power to the CPU out the box. Every other one I have tried you have to use third party software to achieve the same. I have to give a shout out to Dell for doing that. I've never used a Mac but they are supposed to be great for editing so it is definitely worth a look. I should get one to review..

I was waiting for the Lightroom progress ! I'm having a difficult time deciding which one of these 2 shall i buy, it's been other a month of thinking and waiting reviews either the New XPS core i7 or the Asus Flip 14 ! my main usage is photo editing while travelling, and sec usage is civil engineering programs like SAP and Tekla. The main problem to me was to decide either the difference in editing between the MX150 and the integrated 620 worth it or no, as i go more for the XPS. And as the Laptop change period for me is 4 to 5 years, i don't know if i will regret not having the Thunderbolt port in the future or no. Can you help me with that as you had both of them in hands ? thanks in advance ^_^
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
The Thunderbolt port definitely adds value and is a serious omission on Asus's part. Exklim will be launching a GTX 1050 mobile eGPU soon that may help in this regard. The onboard mx150 in the Asus is an underclocked version but can be overclocked by 10%. If your applications take advantage of the GPU it may help, but out of the box the XPS runs faster as Dell increased the turbo power but the Asus can be made to do the same. I think if you don't plan on using the pen then the XPS 13 is the way to go, its very nice and sleek and that Thunderbolt port will be really useful down the road.

I've seen the Exklim adv. and I must say this is differently what i want ! so XPS is the way to go ! Thanks for the really great help !

Nice work! I am a new subscriber on your channel and I am looking for a portable laptop to be used for studying and business working (no gaming). I was undecided between Dell xps 13 9370 and X1 carbon 6th generation. It needs to be light, smooth with decent battery life. Would you recommend the x1 carbon or another laptop? (maybe wait until new laptops come out?) Thank you very much.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Gianluca Parissi Hi Gianluca, thanks for being a subscriber 😀 I think the new x1 carbon 6th gen will be great. It's not as thin as some if these other ultra books including the new hp Spectre 13" and this should allow for better cooling. I like how it still has 2 USB 3 type A ports as well as thunderbolt. It has a larger battery than the xps13 and doesn't weigh much more. If you find that pen support is important perhaps the surface book 2 13" or the yoga 720 13" would be worth looking at. I find pen support great for keeping notes.
@gianlucaparissi77107 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply! I was also considering to buy the x1 carbon 5th generation or the T470 since I don't know when the new one will come out. I have never used pen support before so I am not sure whether it will be comfortable for me to use it ( maybe during class lectures??).
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
The T470 looks like a solid machine. I always liked Thinkpads, they last for years and can be configured with quite powerful specs. Their Yoga 720 15" weighs a bit more, battery lasts about 7 hours so not as long as the T470. The good thing about having a pen to take notes is that you don't need to carry pad and paper around any more. Your notes are available in Onenote on any windows device - even you cell phone. You can add screen slippings from articles on line and write notes along side them. I find it invaluable for both my customer visits and notes when doing my tests. I think the SB2 13" may be a good option for you, I had its predecessor and loved it
@gianlucaparissi77107 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your advice, I will defenately look more into that. If your budget was 1800 euro, what kind of configuration would you get? x1=i5 8gbRAM 256 SSD ?? SB2=i5 8gb 256SSD???
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
One huge disadvantage of the surface line is that you can't open it up and increase that SSD. I imagine you can with the X1. The SB2 has a microSD card slot. Might not make that much difference to you as you say you are not a gamer but definitely think what programs you have and how much space they take up. That might make your decision easier..
@bgsnmky7 жыл бұрын
Looking at the Dell XPS 13 8th get as well as the Surface Book 2. I also just watched your review of the Surface book 2. LOVE you reviews. Thanks. They seem to have "almost" all the same specs. I would build them the same. The Surface Book seems to have a slightly faster processor i7 8660 vs 8550. I just read an article with the Surface Book 2 dropping the wifi. I am on the internet as a travel agent - 90% of the time and need to confirm connectivity. Not sure if you had any issues. Curious between the two any direct comparison to notes.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
I actually found the wifi to be worse on the XPS 13, never been a fan of the killer 1435 car. Not dropping wifi (which I have had with hat card before) but slow 5 GHz throughput. If only the SB2 have thunderbolt, that would make it perfect. Still, out of the two I do prefer the SB2 , I like having the pen option, the option for a tablet and it still maintains decent performance especially when you increase the turbo boost power. Thanks for watching my videos :)

What is the point of having a quadcore cpu if the laptop cannot keep it cool? I tested the Dell inspiron 13 7373 and happens the same as this new xps 13, it reachs 98°C super easy and runs at constantly 60 to 70°c. Maybe this quadcore cpus suits better to traditional laptops, bigger and thicker like 14 or 15.6 inch. What about the fan? Does it get loud constantly? Runs all the time? In my Dell inspiron 13 7373 it was terrible annoying, even repasted did not help at all.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Nicolás Jafelle yes, my CPU would pull up to 35W and the small cooling system could not handle it. I can see why a repaste would have little effect. The fans on this one were quiet. I wanted to crank them up but in hwinfo I dragged the slider to 7000rpm but nothing changed.

Looks really nice

Yes, it does look nice, I agree but it is expensive. If it didn't run so hot and I didn't have that dodgy panel I would have kept it and just upgraded the small ssd, alas it will go back and I will get the new XPS 15 2-1 when it comes out

i still havnt found a thin light gaming laptop, something that looks like an xps but can play average games at 1080p. heard the xps15 maxq is out soon.. maybe that will be theo ne.
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
William Buttel how about the Aero 14, Aorus x3 v7 or Razer Blade 14 ? Gtx 1060...the upcoming xps 15 2 in 1 looks good with Vega M graphics , should be on par with a gtx 1050.

sure but a 4-laned one and designed so that the pci controller won't bottleneck when e.g reading from the ssd and handling the TB3.

Anyway see the price of the GTX 1080 TIs lately? The least expensive Strix if you can find it is over $1,100. Bitminers are killing gamers.

The 999$ version is 1299€ here in Germany... :(
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Lagiwer that's crazy, just for128 GB and 4GB RAM ?
@lagiwerr6 жыл бұрын
OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy we dont have that option avaivable here. The cheapest model for 1299€ got the i5-8250u, 8gb ram and 256 gb ssd.... i consider to buy that one... should be great for watching movies and surf the web^^ But 1299€ are 1590 dollar^^

Lagiwer Yeh, it is crazy the price difference . That's one reason I'm still in the USA because I have to buy these things. I'm sure it will do you well😀

What's with Dell with this model...it's like they want to nickel and dime us. A 128 GB, how realistic is this. The minimum should be 250 GB. It indeed has its shortcomings.
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Michael Aranda I agree totally, a few updates and perhaps one game and you are done, no more space. SSDs are cheap these days. The model I have should be the base model and reduced to $1000.

Dang that laptop is not cheap bro

I know, crazy expensive. That's why it should be 100% perfect at that price :)

Overpriced and underpowered for practical use in all but the most minimal needs. As jewelry, it's nice, as a functional computer, it lacks. Besides, Acer Aspire gives the best bang for the buck at ~$5-600 and the Acer Helios or Predator with ~ GTX1060-70 graphics card for Almost the same price.... Additionally, if I really want a thin and light, the Xiaomi is nicer - especially as I am now living in China and they are readily available for a GREAT price ;-) Great review as always...thank you for all of your efforts!!!!!!

Very comprehensive review. Like the small bezels, but the white frame prevents screen from disappearing. For users willing to tinker with an undervolt & repaste of CPU, the i5 should do even better. But even with the undervolt & repaste, the i7 might be a tough sell...
@OWNORDISOWN7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Yeh, I would have done a repaste but that gap in the panel was a no go for me, not for $1200 plus tax..and most won't even undervolt, nor even be aware there is an issue. Thanks for watching !

The issue with a too thin laptop. So far, only the Xiaomi 15" has done this right.

Yes, I agree. The cooling solution I think was more designed for the previous gen dual core chips...shame really.

Only because this review misses one of the main selling points - the 17" resolution (FHD or 4k) on a 13" screen in an 11" case. It's gaming performance is close to irrelevant. It's nice that it can also - if you really insist - do a bit of gaming on this - but it is not meant for gaming and not sold as a gaming laptop. It's a very mobile workstation with very good battery life and the best screen/size combination available. That it also looks nice is a bonus. I don't want to use it as a tablet - so pen and 2 in-1 comparisons are irrelevant to users who just want a great laptop . I'm also happy that my FHD version doesn't waste weight and power on a touch screen. This is for doing work on the go and/or in cramped conditions and it excels at that. The light-bleed is not a standard feature - my unit doesn't have that production flaw (I guess Dell still has to work on QC). And I'd rather get a new USB-C thumb drive than keep the dongle attached all the time (plus - why would you loose the dongle all the time?.). External keyboard and monitor would best be connected via a dock. So overall the dongle is rarely needed.

@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
邹月 Thanks ! With a gtx 1080 in an eGPU box 2 or 4 lanes makes no difference at all. Please watch my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXiWep-DhLuUh5Y The CPU makes more of a difference.
