Thanks! It's like anything, once you do it a few times, you just stick to the same steps. My favorite thing about the CNC is that it's so accurate, and it's something I can do when I get older. I'm really looking forward to retirement and having time to do more with it.

I don’t blame you for not going to the mall at this time of year. Probably a madhouse just like every other shopping center before Christmas. Great job on the drum! I think thin copper wire could work at well if someone was going to make it for themselves.

Great entry for Dave's Christmas Challenge! I also like how your x-carve spoil board is in pristine condition despite your heavy use of the machine. Hmmm... I should take notes. Haha Merry Christmas, my friend!
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt! I've never thought of that as being a spoil board, or waste board as they call it. It's the main base of the machine that keeps it solid, plus it has the helpful grid to line things up. Seems like it would make an uneven surface to clamp future projects onto, plus ruin the line-up grid. It's so easy just to put scrap plywood under the board when clamping it down. Thanks and happy new year!!!

Nice job, Steve. Although, I think this may be a bit heavy for a tree ornament considering the wood is solid. I think I would have put it on the lathe and hollowed out the center before glueing the top and bottom on. On the other hand, you could have drilled out the center with a Forstner bit to lighten it up,
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks yeah it is kind of heavy but hangs ok. I had initially designed it so the cnc would cut out the middle for thin walls, but wanted to try the dowel alignment idea. I am going to make some more with thin walls and I think I can use the center cutout for smaller drums. Merry Christmas!

@@SteveCarmichael I actually have both the Amazon one and Google one. One was a gift and the other I won in a raffle. Both are the small "hockey puck" ones. Both are a couple years old so older generations. My opinion is the Amazon Alexa. I did have to change the wake up work as I had someone named Alexa on my team so it was always going off :). I had high hopes for the google home mini as I use gSuite but actually the thing doesn't work with gSuite will at all. Can't connect to my calendar, google keep, and other things that I use. New generations may and I think if you don't use gSuite it will but not 100% sure. I just found the Amazon Echo to be easier to use and compatible with more things that I do (which is not much). The Amazon Echo does have a few more false wake ups though (again, older generations). I have a several plugs setup for lamps so that when I come home at night I can say "Echo, it's dark" and then I have a few lamps turn on in my living room. Problem is that when using a plug you need to use the assistant to turn on/off. Over all I use them for very basic things, but I do find it handy.
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, thanks for the info! I will have to read up on them, and of course watch some youtube videos. I really just want to use one for jokes in a woodworking video. lol The actual real usage will just be a plus.

It looks great Steve. I'm still struggling with mine. I'm either close or I've ruined a beautiful piece of Paduk. I ran the contour pass in MM and thought that I had the roughing pass in MM as well but turned out it was in CM. The bit ripped through a lot of material before I could hit the emergency stop and I'm trying to salvage what I have. It's no big deal, but I should have started earlier or gone for an easier project.
@SteveCarmichael
@SteveCarmichael 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Harry! You can't stop now, just salvage what you got. Maybe a patch of the same wood or contrasting wood could work, or some other fix to turn it into a 'feature'. My clamps came loose on my poplar circle. In the video I flipped the board over and cut it again, but you can see the hole from the goof up. You can also see the other cut when I pop out the one I used. lol Good luck to and Merry Christmas.
