2018 Honda Accord 2.0T Review - America's best sedan?

In the epic battle between Toyota and Honda the stakes couldn't be higher (and the final score couldn't be closer) than in the Camry vs Accord fight. For 2018 both companies completely redesigned their mid-sized sedans with a keen eye on the shifting realities of the modern sedan shopper. With this generation of Accord, Honda decided to sharpen their claws with a 2.0L turbo borrowed from their hot-hatch Civic Type R, an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, more LEDs than Times Square and some adaptive suspension technology borrowed from luxury brands. The result is quite simply the best Accord ever produced. Period. But does that mean it beats the all-new Camry? Yes and no.

Alex is truly a brilliant auto journalist. You won't find anyone else analyzing in detail the Accord & Camry like others comparing the Camaro & Mustang. And the child-seat is back!

+1. .. A recent vehicle review showed Herr Alex actually securing a child seat and identifying each of that vehicles anchor locations. .. "The Devil is in the details". .. Damn good review! .. While viewing, this dug up fond memories when struggling to install a Graco baby seat in the rear seat position of my wifes 2wk old MY01 Audi S4 sedan. .. The Frau being 5' 4" in height, positions the drivers seat damn near 98% in its forward position, still there was minimal-to-zero rear seat location for a rear facing-style infant baby seat arrangement. .. Memory lane.

Your reviews are amazing. You approach every car in a level headed and realistic manner. I watched this one because I want an accord and I have been tempted by the Camry. My wife wants a crv or Subaru, I think awd is overrated. I owned a pilot and a 4Runner with it and think it’s not as good as safe driving. I think your comments on cars are accurate. I am a little surprised at everyone (not just you) complaining about accord seat comfort. I really like that I can push the seat down and back and almost be semi reclined. Seriously great work. I’ve prolly watched 50 videos you’ve done. Now get back in the trunk!

@Just-a-mazin 33 -- True, but considering how conservative Toyota is with the changes, I probably wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Still, there are two changes I want Toyota to make before I buy the next Camry (neither of which will happen): (1) Get rid of the center console. I care more about driver's position and room for my knee rather than yet another place to put an oversized phone; and (2) Give me a manual transmission. I don't care how many times I hear reviewers talk about how great the latest automatics are -- they sap all life out of cars like Camry.
@jmasoncars4452
@jmasoncars4452 6 жыл бұрын
Hasty One The entire platform is new to the camry including the engines. With that being said, technically the "new" engines are the oldest part of the Camry considering they're just retuned versions of the old engines. The 3.5 made 306hp in the 2006 Lexus IS350.

t c then how do you explain Camry being the best selling car for decade despite being an average performer for most of that time. The 2018 is the first Camry is years that has it all. After all Chevy gives huge discount in Malibu's and it's never sold like the Camry.

Add to the thought Audi had a fastback several years ago for the European market. It could not pass our rollover test here because of the lack of headroom for a safety margin between roofline and passenger heads. Audi introduced the Sportback recently and broached the clearance problem in recent models.

Killing the sedan would be a fatal flaw to any car company in my opinion as will killing the v8 and v6. I personally see no advantage only drawbacks to driving a suv as a 50yo retred man. Less fuel economy, more wind resistance, poor visibility or more blind spots. I also would worry about blinding others as thus has been a huge problem for me as a sedan driver. Im often blinded by the perfect eye level of these new led headlights. Once thats happens I may as well be blind. Its also a huge issue at red lights as I often feel like the sun is literally driving behind me when sitting at a red light and thats with auto dimming mirrors side mirrors and rearview mirror as well as the darkest window tint allowed by law. I have also noticed here in a small town that these offensively bright lights always give the right away to the traffic from the other direction even when Im the closest to the light! Thus causing me to set throughout another 3 minute light again. However had I had a new suv or pickup with the God awful bright eye level lights I would also always have right away vs any sedans. I also wonder why all these police are going suv since they are slower, cause more damage and fatalities in wrecks, burn through fuel like no other and cost way more to buy and maintain. Its like all society has lost common sense. Its not rocket science that gas hog suv isn't a good choice for cops. 💯

He commented on exactly my concerned. Will a 1.5 and a 2.0 highly stressed turbo engine be as reliable in the long run as Honda's naturally asperated engines? One of the cars in my family is a 2001 Acura 3.2TL. The V6 engine is the same basic design as the old Accord V6. My car currently has over 228,000 miles. No oil leaks, no oil usage between changes, runs like a champ.

I used to travel frequently and rent a lot of cars. Rarely I would see a Honda Accord as a rental car but see a lot of Chevrolet Malibus. Both cars were boring to drive but the Chevrolet was the only one that had had a engine problem; however, that was only a minor issue nothing that stop me from driving. People who like Chevrolets like I used to find that GM cars are much better than the old one so they are very happy with them. I used to own a Pontiac but it broke down so much I bought a Honda which I still drive today with over 450,000 miles. It too is it boring car so I bought an 2005 Acura TL which is my favorite car of all time. It is good looking reliable and fun to drive. I still have to give some credit to the GM cars that I've driven. They are a lot better me than previously and I especially like how they start in the cold.

Love the look of the new Accord way more than the Camry. The Accord definitely has a more American look to it than the Camry and has a very nice front end that makes the hood appear longer, giving the impression of a bigger engine, perhaps.

I agree the front end looks somewhat odd. But if you go with a black finish, the front end blends nicely with the shiny body, making the front less distracting.

Great review Alex. I am simply flabbergasted that Camry doesn't have Car Play and Android Auto when almost every other car manufacturer is putting it standard these days. After the refresh, I agree with you that both cars look great but I am little biased towards Accord because of sharp styling. But thats just a personal preference.

Straight up, your videos are incredible for the comparison heavy shopper in a given model / market segment. Very well done. The Accord really does seem like the value leader. I'm not entirely keen on the messy front end with the broken up grill and obvious sensor cluster dead center in the radiator air scoop. At that price point, the Sport 1.5L seems like a Civic killer considering how much more room is available, the less controversial design and the included features.

I personally was not impressed with the Camry when I went to the Indianapolis/Cleveland/Philadelphia car shows. I closed the door, and it just sounded so cheap. Very poor. I also felt the interior plastics, specifically around the door were terrible. Toyota refuses apple carplay and android auto, so that to me puts it a step behind. I do like that they have the V-6 option with AUTOMATIC and not a CVT! To me, the Accord looks better (my personal opinion) , is better built, more fun to drive (even with a CVT), and is the winner of the two. If the Accord still had the V-6 and was a true auto, I think they would have a true home run.

The less powerful Accord engine has a CVT, but the V6-competitive 2.0T is mated to a 10-speed automatic that is widely acclaimed.
@atmartens
@atmartens 6 жыл бұрын
You have to get the EX-L and above. Most of Honda sales would be on the LX and EX. I could understand the CVT going on the LX since that's an entry level, but the EX is a pretty popular model that most families go with.

There's a couple things I wouldn't mind seeing in future videos. 1. Where are the windshield washer sprayers located? Are they easy to keep free of snow/ice? The reason I mention this, is because I live in Canada and some cars actually have sprayers located in hard to reach locations that can often be covered in snow. 2. How do the images from the reverse camera come across? Are they augmented? How badly are they fish-eyed? How clear is the picture? Keep up the great work :)

I already chose the Accord but I would have liked a more in-depth discussion about your transmission impressions considering no other competitor has a 10spd. Not only this, but also it's a pity this new Accord isn't selling as well considering it is almost universally praised as the best in the segment.

Accord. The Camry looks great from most angles in its highest trim, and I like that it has a 6 cylinder engine. But the problem is that I have to look at its front end. As polarizing as the Accord’s front end is, I would take it any day over the Camry’s. And I also like the Accord’s interior better.

The NFC feature isn't a replacement for Bluetooth. It uses NFC to pair to Bluetooth easier. It saves you time from having to go into the Bluetooth menu to add a device. Just hold your phone next to it and it pairs. Also, your review is the only one I've seen where you state there is less headroom than the Camry. I've seen the actual measurements and I do think they say it's one inch less headroom but other reviewers say that how it's designed it feels like more room.

Honda really needs to hire a new design team for their exteriors. You can also see this in their Civic line up with tacked on fake plastic vents. Their styling is too overwrought. A sedan should be a sedan. Fastback style without a hatch is silly and puts questionable esthetics over form.

I test drove the Camry and Accord and ended up buying a 2.0L Touring Accord. It's all a matter of what you like. I really like the exterior of the Accord and the handling felt better than the Camry. A 700+ page owners manual is a bit much though- still finding new things even after 2 months.

The solid bar across the front kills the Accord's front end. A similar bar on the Civic is much more fluid bar and therefore more attractive. Look at sales figure versus Camry. Accord is a very good car on paper and car o the year and it may continue to lose sales to camry due to styling. The follow the crowd turbocharging also has not won it any friends. Vtech V6 and a stick may have been better received for some buyers. The V6 was a pleasure to behold. Turbo's are hard to match in pure speed but it screams 'following the leader'. Sound like someone at Honda lost their nerve.
