Just recently bought a 2018 with only 7000 miles on it. I agree with everything except your on road review. I came from driving a Nissan Titan to this. The Jeep in comparison feels like a sports car on the road...I absolutely love it! Responsive steering, tight turns, easy to park, surprisingly quieter than I expected on the freeway. All around good feel on and off the road. Favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned, hands down. Only con to me is the price tag. But I think it was worth it.

The Wrangler ride is one of the things I freaking love about it. It *had* to feel like a proper Jeep, otherwise I wouldn't have bought my new one. I like how aggressive it feels on the road. Also, I second the person asking for someone to review a Wrangler that isn't a maxed-out Rubicon.

Problem with getting the turbo four, it will require premium fuel. I like the fact that they actually beefed up the front axle, easier hardtop removal, and tighter shifting manual. What I dislike is blind spot monitoring (something extra to get torn off), leds on the fenders, and hate the start/stop of the engine.

I don't understand why most Wrangler reviews talk about fuel efficiency and aerodynamics. There's nothing efficient or aerodynamic about a Wrangler!! It's a box on wheels. If you really give it some thought, it's one of the most inefficient, cumbersome, and actually useless vehicles on the planet. Yet... THEY ARE FRIGGIN' AWESOME!! They are made to play off road. I don't care about efficiency, I care about "Will it climb over that obstacle?" Function. Wrangler is all about function. Nice video

The problem is, how do you get from your house to that offroad campsite? Probably driving on the highway for an hour+. And there are a lot of Jeep owners that hardly ever take their vehicles off road, and at most are just going down dirt fire roads and the like, something that could easily be tackled by say a Golf Alltrack or Subaru Crosstrek or heck even a 4WD Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, all of which are much better behaved on the road. I really think we should have seen a modern suspension on the Wrangler (I don't think solid axles are necessary), a change to an aluminum unibody, which would drastically reduce weight and also help lower the center of gravity while still keeping the high ground clearance, and ideally the EcoDiesel engine option from the new 2019 Ram.

@@martinsamek5890 When is Toyota going to start putting true off road tires on their lineup? They only did it on the original Land Cruisers and then again on the FJ Cruiser - no other vehicle in their lineup came with the proper tires from the factory. I don't want to spend $40k or more on a vehicle and then run down to Discount Tire and throw another $1200 for tires on it so that I can go off roading.

My JK vs JL comparison (for me, a 2 door Rubicon soft top) My JL pros -possibly the new 2.0 engine (I also like the Pentastar) -8 speed transmission (much better than JK transmission) -quicker throttle response -soft top without ‘cross bar’ -soft top no zippers -quieter soft top -body color roll bar -flat horizontal dash -lighter/aerodynamic tweaks = better MPG -real metal interior detail -real hardware (not faux bolts) interior -more inputs and other interior conveniences -larger cup holders -air vents for cooling under hood -more rake in windshield (think rock damage) -doors stay opened, and close better -cabin is slightly longer -doors remove easier/faster -telescopic adjusting steering wheel -bigger storage tub -stronger and lighter tailgate -better hood latches -easier drain plug access (without needing to move carpet) My JL cons -auto start/stop (I’m not sure how to disable it) -the bumpers (front and back) -front running lights on fender flare -too much digital visual “noise” on dash (me like simple) -rear camera (I know I can take it off - and I will) -no hard drive in radio to store music (I like that in the 430 in JK)

I have the JLU ... longer wheelbase on the 4-door makes for a smoother ride. It’s still a brick on wheels & gets horrid gas mileage, but this is my 3rd Jeep and knew what I was getting into. My only complaint is the headliner should be standard & that’s such a minor gripe that it’s almost not worth mentioning. It’s a slow vehicle & will always reveal its solid axle design on rutted roads. If you set those real expectations before buying, then you’ll be good.

1:55 yeah, they got updated looks... the Wrangler is barely distinguishable from a 10 year old one, and most non-Jeep fans probably couldn't tell you which of the two is newer. The suspension is also barely changed, so that big highway cruising compromises are going to be just the same as a 2017. The biggest change is that you can get awesome things like Fiat/Chrysler's new UConnect, but its by no means a modern vehicle. Many iterations still weigh well over 4K lbs for example, so it got none of the chassis updates like the Dodge Ram, F150, Silverado and the like that saw significant weight reduction to improve acceleration and braking.
@BoopSnoot6 жыл бұрын
On aerodynamics, why not just look it up? The JK has a drag coefficient of .50, making it the least aerodynamic vehicle on sale in 2017. Literally, look it up, there is nothing worse available on the market. You are actually right that the JL was improved, but hardly, with a 0.45 Cd. A 2019 Dodge Ram, that has a big flat face and is hardly aerodynamic, has a .35 drag coefficient, making it magnitudes more efficient than the new Wrangler. I don't have numbers for all 2018/9 vehicles yet, but I would wager there's nothing for sale this year that has a higher drag coefficient than the new 2-door Wrangler, primarily thanks to the sharp edges and wheels that are outside the body and with essentially four parachute mud/rockguards exposed to the airstream.

My experience owning one so far... Every ad, pamphlet, sales literature and even the sales pitch at the dealership revolve around it's off road capabilities. Yet doing things I did on a weekend basis with my 20 year old Wrangler TJ Sahara caused the yolk on the front inner axle to fail, taking out a ball joint and snapped an ear off of the now cheap aluminum steering knuckle. All on a brand new 2019 Wrangler JL Rubicon! First they tried to brush me off due to evidence of mud under the vehicle (for real?). The argument quickly escalated that I possibly hit something despite 0 damage on any other components. They wouldn't say I did hit something for sure, but since it was a possibility... they had an argument. It was also a possibility a part failed... just saying. When making it clear I couldn't be without a vehicle any longer and that I have to get it fixed, I asked if it needed anything else. They didn't know, as they didn't inspect it. They just saw it was broke and dirty and essentially just said nope unless I paid up. I was told they could see if anything aside from what they could see by looking behind the tire was broke, but I'd have to pay for a full inspection. At one point I was given the option to pay in "advance" to speed up the repairs and if the warranty kicked in, I'd be reimbursed. Ya, right... Being jerked around between the dealership and customer service, I took my jeep elsewhere to get fixed. Doing so apparently waived my right to complain anymore or receive compensation. But after 2 weeks of being without a vehicle... it had to be done. It turned into 3 weeks after everything was said and done. That's what 60k buys you! I've posted this a few times on Jeeps facebook page. Which are all deleted and I am blocked now from commenting. Guess your only allowed to tell people to go ahead and void your warranty work, it's fun!

The hood vents are functional.
@cpgeorge25186 жыл бұрын
It does a lot actually. For slow going all day off roading, you generate lots of heat under the hood. Those vents let a lot of that heat escape. Also jeeps don’t have conventional hood latches. The hood vents and fender vends let out air at higher speeds to greatly reduce hood flutter. They aren’t intended to be for high speed performance like you would see on a Subaru wrx

The way the front windshield is designed you will hear more wind noise coming from the front and more when it rains. You also hear more noise in front because the top is a lot more quiet. Overall though it is more quiet inside than a JK inside

@WRXXXual6 жыл бұрын
Adam Savage The vents on the hood are for additional convective heat rejection at low speed. The hottest part of any engine is around the combustion chamber(s), and in a V6 configuration, that's right by the hood. Since warm air will always rise, the vents will give that heated air a place to go, which means the overall heat rejection of a Jeep with hood vents will be greater than a Jeep without hood vents. You don't need air flowing over an engine for hood vents to be effective at reducing overall engine temperatures versus a non-vented hood. Regarding radiator fans, those are there to control the temperature of the coolant, not to force air over the engine - that's just a collatoral effect. Either way, since the radiator is pushing heated air over the engine, why would you think having an additional path for hot air to escape would be meaningless? You aren't making any sense to me. Also, WRXs still run top mount intercoolers.
@2Phast4Rocket6 жыл бұрын
The hood vents are for the JL and NOT to cure any heating issue with the JK. I wheel my JK in the Mojave dessert and no overheating what so ever. The JL vents are just designed to look bad ass and to look different than the JK. Also 33" tires are NOT massive. If people wheel their JL, start upgrading to 35" tires

Presently the diesel will NOT be available on the 2 door. ONLY in the 4 dr and only with the Auto Transmission. No Plans for Diesel and Manual transmission or in a 2 door...........YET. There is always hope. Hopefully jeep changes their mind after seeing increased orders of Diesel options. Sell, Sell Sell is the way of business. Why limit the consumer

I want to get a new Jeep but am worried that I can’t afford it. I don’t want an old one, cause I really like the new grill and headlights on the 2018. Looks like I’ll be saving for a while. Currently I have a 2011 Jeep Compass, love it, but want a real Jeep.

The 700+ hp Wrangler should be called GOAT or Mountain GOAT (Greatest of All Time), and the round badging on the front quarter panel should include a goat on the mountain.

Way too much crap. Sure, have it available. The Rubicon should come in a commercial version that is devoid of all the leather, air conditioning and comfort amenities. Give me a version I can go through a drive through car wash with the roof down without buggering up some electronic butt warmer.

That’s why you order your JL Rubicon without the butt warmer if it worries you. Luckily the electronics inside the cab, including the stereo were designed to be weather and water resistant. Don’t forget there are drain plugs in the floor boards.

omg, would you rather shoot the commercial with a pretty girlfriend or a fat one?
@eirizarry25686 жыл бұрын
Order it basic without all the comfort amenities. Thats what I idid. No butt warmer, no blind spot warning, No auto transmission. Basic, the only option was the hard top and it was only about 400$ more than the soft top. You CAN get into a RUBICON and keep it under $ 40K

It’s a solid axle vehicle; like a heavy duty truck. Of course the ride will be harsh relative to a Ford Explorer & even the Grand Cherokee. If you don’t value the utility, removable top, customization, durability (yes, they are durable), & all-around fun, then go get a BMW or Lexus; this isn’t for you. I had a TJ, JK, & now JL and absolutely love it ... best SUV on the planet for me. I can remove the doors & top, which I enjoy; wouldn’t be able to do that with other SUVs.

I drive both a 1999 F350, and a 1967 F250. To me anything is an upgrade ride quality wise, especially compared to the 67. The only real thing the 67 has goin for it is that old school bench seat. Otherwise than that, it has no power steering, no power brakes (all drums), which means forget about driving on ice, especially with the stock tire size, has no air conditioning, old school 4 on the floor, which you hit 4th at 25 mph, so i dont drive it faster than 55 mph cause the engine is screaming. Which means my fuel economy is around 10 mpg. The suspension is ofcourse stiff, and when you hit a bump, the truck wants to do a slam dunk. And ofcourse there is more. All those quirks make it a blast and yet scary to drive. To me a base jeep in 2019 compared to those two is a luxury and performs way better, except in a truck capacity (towing and such).

Awesome video! Did you ever think about waiting a couple years for the JL to be out before buying the JL? I’m in the market for a JLU Rubicon and I’m seriously debating on waiting for the JL Truck. But it’s gonna be a looong wait for me! Even though it’s just around the corner. Thanx!!

Wonder why they won't release m/t with the 2.0T engine. Would be awesome to get a 2dr with the snappy turbo and manual.

The brakes are not going to get burned up from the "brake lock differential"... it's less stress on the system then normal braking, unless you drive like a total fool, but even then it's not much stress on the braking system.

I highly hope you're right about the v8 wrangler. This would incline Ford to have a 5.0 option in the up coming Bronco and that's what I would probably buy. Having owned two Jeep Jk's I can attest they are not reliable and one had to have the engine rebuilt ground up at 45k miles and they tried to weasel me out of warranty work.

I'd love a diesel with the 6spd, if you could yank all that emissions crap off. I don't want a plugged DPF putting me in limp mode on a trail. Good video.

Nice review. I don't own a Jeep, but would like to own a Rubicon. That said, the criticisms of the Jeep and the speculation about its future changes seemed unpersuasive to me. Also, consider recording a video with the top and doors removed.

Lot of peep are asking for a v8. Yet all the companies are downsizing their engines. Even pickups have 4s. And they’re awesome!

I have the 2016 wranger 2 door and don't think u guys are comparing it to the newer jk. Which has the same technology as the jl it looks like. But arero Dynamics. U can be right on that. If a perfect world though. It will take years for them to work out the minor tweaks. By 2022 I'm hoping to see an electric motor. But diesel is definitely the start in the right path!!! I'll wait for the diesel and a gf and a job and a kid I hope. I love everyone and want the best out of this world.

I got my 2015 Wrangler 4 Door Sahara in Tank Green back in March of 2015, I love it so much that I bought the Life Time Chrysler Power Train Warranty a few months ago. Gonna drive it till the body comes off the frame 😂 OIIIIIIIO
@stephenpowstinger7335 жыл бұрын
Ok I like the off-road idea - but I'm not willing to sacrifice everything in comfort to get that, so if it's too rough riding on pavement or poor handling I won't buy it. I'm not clear on the diesel engine cost or advantage. I notice the 2.0 liter turbo is nearly identical in output to the V-6, just slightly more torque. I would prefer full safety features like distance-pacing cruise control and emergency braking of mid models, not just high-end packages.

The JL has a recall pertaining to the 8spd transmission...I hope that issue gets handled quickly.
