The Corvette and just about every modern Ferrari uses a transaxle. So does most Aston Martins and the older Porsche 924,944 and 928. A transaxle is more common than you think.
@AAutoBuyersGuide7 жыл бұрын
What's unique about this one is the orientation. Most rear transaxles are RWD transmissions bolted onto a rear axle. I'd call that "almost a transaxle". The GT however truly uses an integrated transmission and axle where there are actually transmission components on both sides and the whole thing is in one case. The gear sets are on one side of the axle, clutch packs on the other, etc.
@TassieLorenzo7 жыл бұрын
It's a transverse gearbox, Alex? A bit like the old Ferrari F1 cars in the early 90s?

Great looking car. I think Mercedes is sand bagging on the torque output. Maybe they are protecting the transmission. The output seems low for a turbo 4 liter V8. Really sexy car though. Or as Alex would say, a hoot and a half. You don't hear that every day.

Hey Alex! Thank you for a great video yet again; I have been a huge fan for many years. Last year I asked you a question and you very graciously responded, and I was in regards to your reasons for not covering any Mitsubishi products. I do believe your answer was due to market share and wanting to cover vehicles that more people would shop for, which I totally understand and respect. I am wondering, however, if this Mercedes (which I’m a huge fan boy for as well) fits that very criteria, and if the Mitsubishi line up, or the Tesla line up that I’m VERY VERY interested in you covering, in fact meets your own criteria. Would you be willing to cover Mitsubishi products in the near future? Lancers and Outlanders (both normal and Sport/RVR models) are really quite popular. Will you also be touching the Tesla’s any time soon? I really can’t wait for your review of a Model S it especially a Model 3!! (Even their upcoming pickup that has yet to be revealed!)

I would have to agree with you, Alex, about the Lexus claim with the LC as a direct competitor to this AMG. For myself, that claim doesn't mean a thing since I would much rather drive the LC simply due to the more comfortable ride, not to mention the reliability of the Lexus brand.

i just started seeing these on the road, hardtop version that is. if i was in that market i would go with the 911 turbo or R8, mercedez S class coup convertible. why buy a car thats trying to be the 911 when you can buy the 911? R8 is exotica and the S class coupe convertible is sporty with ultra luxury and the convertible i saw yesterday looked very serious.

On this dreadful Oct 2017 weekend of non-stop 2018 Honda Accord turbo videos, hooray to Alex for reviewing this lovely vehicle. Oh yeah...the Lexus LC500 definitely doesn't complete here, nor against the British coupes. I feel the Lexus coupes (RCF and LC500) are stylish but overpriced, but I commend them for having n/a V8 coupes.
@LilRick967 жыл бұрын
cadsux I don't believe the LC is too overpriced imo, the design and quality and craftsmanship is pretty damn great. I would say it should start in the $85K and up range. Now the LS, is probably the biggest steal in the in the Big dog luxury sedan segment.
@cadsux7 жыл бұрын
The LC that everyone has been admiring is the $101K version. The RCF has proven otherwise, with it's dismal sales & up to $30k in depreciation in such a short time. Don't get me wrong, I'd love these coupes to succeed, but the pricing is hurting it.

Ok, what am I missing? This is a "super light" car? I have a used rental v6 mustang convertible. It's curb weight is 10 pounds less than this. It seats 4, and is also a convertible. Engine power is waayyyy different, but displacement is close. There are no exotic materials in my car other than front fenders and hood being aluminum..
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
Aaron Koch Well for one this has German engineering so everything is solid. A Mustang is well....just a Ford and all that plastic and lower level of engineering automatically makes it lighter.
@cadsux7 жыл бұрын
2016 Consumer Reports Reliability Ratings of 30 car brands. Ford #17, MB #21. German cars are great at looking & feeling solid on the outside, but inside, cheap internal components and added sensor modules that need replacement, like the plastic impellers in the water pumps. In other cars they're metal and never need replacing. Dual clutch/ZF transmissions are fast, but expensive when problems arise. 2 spark plugs per cylinder! MB cars = "money pits". Sophisticated = expensive repairs.
@cadsux7 жыл бұрын
Also, the Mustang at 189" long is midsized, while the GT C at 179" long is compact. This thing weighs as much as a fully optioned V8 Mustang GT premium. If it wasn't a convertible, I'd say it's the sound insulation.
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
cadsux They are not money pits if people look after such advanced machines like the manufacturer intended instead of cheaping out on after market cheap nonsense when the car is out of warranty. They drive as well as a car can drive because it is properly engineered. All the parts that make it drive well like the suspension is just that bit more refined and thicker than all others. It is easily felt when driving for example a Lexus GS or similar Infiniti and then an E Class. The 2 Japanese cars feel insubstantial while the German car feels rock solid even after many many years.
@cadsux7 жыл бұрын
The surveys for reliability, cost of ownership, maintenance, etc., are based on stock/unmodified models, and the breakdown & service of those original components. I don't think Ford owners take better care of their cars, nor have better aftermarket parts than MB. Back to Mr. Koch's comment, more sophistication/refinement = more weight & higher replacement/service costs when those "rock solid" systems, such as the adjustable suspension, fail, and sooner than others.

Those who are inclined to experience a 911 would not entertain the thought of purchasing this AMG GT C in its place. This is just a 'clown car' for posers wishing to appear as a Nürburgring nincompoop. If racetracks are where you spend all your time and monies, this isn't the car you would expend on the track, anyway. The heritage of Mercedes-Benz is not that of boy racers, but that of aristocrats traveling in quality and comfort. Mercedes is stupidly destroying their lineage of the SL, by dumping boatloads of R&D into their AMG lunacy. Had Mercedes-Benz have invested their attentions and innovations of this vehicle, into their SL lineage... then, they could compete with Porsche on the level in which Porsche struggles-- comfort. Ya spend a lotta money, ya want your butt to feel good as you get around town and country swiftly, butt comfortably.
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
sheridanbucket The SL is old now. A new one will come. You want comfort? There's an SL. This is a sports roadster. I don't see what you are complaining about.
@sheridanbucket7 жыл бұрын
SDav21, the SL is the makers original "sports roadster" with a pedigree going back over 60 years. AMG was a niche tuning company, bought up by Mercedes-Benz about a decade ago, now overly applied across the entire product line! Even today's SL is saturated with AMG design elements and design cues (e.g. SL frontend styled by the AMG division, and AMG suspensions and wheel choices that your butt will only come to regret). Once upon a time, all the German makes worked hard to compete with Mercedes-Benz. Today, AMG has Mercedes working hard to compete with all the other German makes. That's the difference. ^^
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
sheridanbucket Well that is what the market wanted. More sport oriented cars. If they don't make a diverse product range how do you expect them to make enough money to develop, research, test and innovate in their cars? They wouldn't be able to build cars as well as they do the S Class and E Class and the SL (which is still luxurious) without selling other products to other target audiences. A manufacturer can't stay afloat doing one thing and the same thing over and over. Markets and trends and technology changes and they have to move with it. It's hard but they have to. For example I hate the current crop of electric cars out there. They are all just a big compromise and the electric thing is way too premature. They should have sorted out the charging times, range and weight of battery technology before applying it to vehicles where an ICE does a better job in those respects already. Now they are forced to bring out electric cars due to propagandist bullshit spewed by a certain manufacturer instead of first perfecting it like they should be. They HAVE to now bring an electric car to stay relevant especially to people who know nothing about cars (which seems like all people who buy electric cars don't). But that's just the unfortunate consequence of the market and where things go at certain points in time hard as it is to accept.
@sheridanbucket7 жыл бұрын
The problem as I see it, SDav21, is that "sport oriented cars" is about all Mercedes has to offer to the market, these days! Even their S-Class and E-Class are saturated with AMG design elements and styling cues. As you say, "A manufacturer can't stay afloat doing one thing and the same thing over and over;" but, that is exactly what Mercedes is doing by applying AMG to everything. Seriously... they might as well change the name of the company to just AMG! If a proper Mercedes-Benz is what you want, then be prepared to buy one made before 2005. Mercedes-Benz builds a better car when they stop trying to be a Porsche, BMW or Audi. Just be a Mercedes-Benz.
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
sheridanbucket Well that's why they offer the options for Elegance, Avantgarde and AMG line. Most people CHOOSE the AMG line themselves because it looks better. So clearly the market has shown its preference. For me, I prefer the star on top of the bonnet like S Class. But for people who wamt something else, the good thing is Mercedes gives them a choice.
