The 370Z Nismo is hot stuff. But is it worth it to buy that top-of-the-line model when you can get a Heritage Edition for significantly less? In this video Ryan roadtrips across Tennessee looking for answers.
Correction: accessory pod contains an oil temperature gauge, not pressure.

They need a refreshed interior. Improved exterior while still keeping its 370z likeness. And the 400HP 3.0TT engine in the infiniti Q50,Q60 while keeping the price lower than the infinitis. Bam the Z is back big time.

Inan Ismailov - that is idiotic. There are plenty of brands that offer multiple cars with the same engine/chassis but different amounts of luxury trim and don't worry about the fact that one might scalp a few sales from the other. Take Infiniti's own G37 for example. Besides...the Z needs an update, because right now is is already "pointless".

because it was its competition. It stood along side with them till 2011 the gap widen. Nissan just sat on their crown like mitsubishi for a decade, while American auto brands innovated. Look where mitsubishis at now, rubbish. All nissan has now is economy cars and their precious gtr which might be outmatched in the future too. Nissan bought 1/3 of mitsubishi btw...

EBONY EXOTIC I own a Z and I know what you mean. I don’t think too many cross shop it with muscle cars in the real world. I always viewed it more as a cheaper alternative to the Porsche Cayman - kind of a pure Sports car that has GT capabilities. That said, I agree that Nissan needs to evolve this car - when this car came out it was a legitimate competitor to a cayman and now it would be blown away by just about every hot hatch, muscle car, even some family sedans. I don’t think the change needs to be drastic though - I think it needs a minor styling redesign, the 400hp Infiniti engine and a revised interior. I would be a buyer at $40k for something like that
@Dolby109

The thing is the pony cars evolved to be not just faster cars, but also good drivers cars, especially the Camaro. Motor Trend liked the way the standard SS drove better than the M3, and the SS 1LE is even better.

Adam S oh definitely - no doubt these cars are ridiculously capable and amazing values. I just think someone who wants a Z isn’t the same person who would buy a Camaro. Just like an M3 buyer will still pick M3 even though the Camaro just proved itself to be a better performer.

Softer sprung for ride and lighter than a Nismo having less body kit crap. Personally I don't like all the extra trim stuff on the Nismo.

I don't understand the criticism of the Z. The car slowly evolves. This is a no frills driver car with a few improvements on driveablity. The 911(not to directly compare the two) does just about the same and everyone is happy. The Z doesn't try to compare to the muscle cars, it making it own genre of sports cars. It's unique. I live the Z and what Nissan is doing. I think thier marketing department is doing a poor job of communication. This is a pure, as close to analog as possible drivers car. Please, let's look at it from that perspective and see it for what it is trying to do.

Nobody likes giving away money... and Nissan is essentially doing just that.. the car sees no upgrades because it sees no sales... it won't see sales, because the car is dated.. Ironically, the sales of the car dropped as the charger hit the market. Factor in the challenger and Camaro..... it was only a matter of time.... Mustang the car that was ONCE slower than 370z in all aspects drove the nail into the coffin with the 2011 stang. Now both the mustang and Camaro in their highest forms are winning categories of the best drivers car. The 350z received the DE, DE Rev Up, and HR engine revisions... The 370z hasn't received a damn thing other than MOSTLY cosmetic updates.

@@Texarmageddon The philosophy of the Z is that it's a poor man's Porsche and it does a pretty good job in meeting that goal. The Z doesn't try to be a lot of different things to a lot of different drivers, it is more narrowly and simply focused on doing certain things very well at the expense of other things. The Z does not and should not try to compete with cars like the Mustang and Camaro, being neither a muscle car nor a pony car.

Musician first, dude-in-traffic last, the 370 is one of those sweet-spot items that hits the goldilocks zone. A bit like a weird guitar that isn't tech-y or auto-tuned, but it lets you play like you want to. That's the 370z. So maybe it's the difference between techno ... and a meeting between a person and a guitar that can really sing in the right hands. If you watch deMuro review the older Lambo (80s and 90s), he loves the raw, difficult to drive, feel. Z isn't that different, but it is a lot cheaper, in-keeping with its heritage.

The Z is still a better driver's car than the Mustang or Camaro, when evaluated on handling, control and power. It definitely looks much better than the Camaro and even looks better than the Mustang, despite its age. For the price, your getting a lot of car that will put smiles on your face when you drive it. I'm in the process of getting a 2019 370Z sport with the 6-speed manual transmission, either in red or black.

This guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to the 370z. Too big? It's no bigger than the mustang or camaro. Too heavy? Wrong again. The 370z weighs around the same or less than the Ecoboost 4 cylinder mustang, which weighs around 3500 lbs. Not economical enough? Wrong again. This is a sports car, not a Toyota Prius. The 370z is economical enough for what it is. I've seen as high as 30mpg highway in my 370z before. The only thing he got right is that the car is definitely due for an update.

+N Oakley Comparing to BRZ and Miata, which are modern, mainstream sports car designs, the 370z is heavy and uneconomical. Mustang and Camaro are cheaper than the 370z on the low end and higher performing on the high end.
@noakley2812
@noakley2812 6 жыл бұрын
+Driving Sports TV The thing you are missing is that the BRZ and miata are in a different class. They both have completely different engines (4 cylinders) and are much less powerful than the 370z. 370z makes basically the same power as the miata and brz combined lol. Yes, the 370z is quite expensive and non-competitive to the newer mustang/camaro combo, but that's Nissan's fault. And again, you are incorrect about it being heavy and uneconomical. Of course the 370z is going to be less economical when compared to the brz and miata. They have 2 less cylinders and are slightly smaller in size, giving them less weight. The 370z has a large V6, so obviousy it is going to guzzle more gas. It sounds like you're basing your information off of nonrelevant resources. You say the same thing about the 370z each time you review it. You may as well call the mustang and camaro uneconomical compared the 370z because they have larger engines.
@drivingsports
@drivingsports 6 жыл бұрын
+N Oakley We know people (consumers, not industry insiders) that shopped 370z’s and instead bought Miatas or BRZs for the very reasons given in the review. It’s a valid comparison because it’s what real shoppers are comparing.
@noakley2812
@noakley2812 6 жыл бұрын
+Driving Sports TV If you are saying that the 370z is a heavy car compared to the BRZ/miata, that is correct. But overall, it is not a heavy car. It is approximately 200 lbs lighter than the camaro/mustang, but around 500 lbs heavier than BRZ/miata. And again, the 370z in fact is not a large car. It is still smaller than the camaro/mustang. In terms of overall performance, the 370z beats both the miata and BRZ. It has almost 2x the power, still has great handling, looks great, and gets decent gas mileage. Now, on the BRZ/miata side, they win with price point and economy due to lighter weight and smaller engines. The weak spots of the 370z are its MSRP and lack of updates to keep it a competitive vehicle (which makes it a rip-off brand new compared to a new camaro/mustang). I own a 370z and am far more familiar with it than you seem to be. I don't think my 370z is the best car in the world either. I just get the impression that you are taking a dump on it. Also, I understand that it is not only power that makes a great sports car. But I'm pretty sure most of the BRZ buyers realized they made a mistake the first time they stepped on the gas and failed to pass a minivan. It handles well but is underpowered. I test drove one and that was one of the things that killed it for me. I still thought it was a good car though. Looked good and handled well. Also, the miata isn't really comparable to the 370z. The miata is naturally a roadster, whereas a 370z is a hardtop. If you are looking for a more accurate comparison to the 370z, try the Hyundai Genesis coupe and not the miata.
@danielallocca7770
@danielallocca7770 6 жыл бұрын
I think the 370z is more of a poor man’s Porsche Cayman or an even trade for the Genesis coupe than it is a brz or Miata competitor. It could be lighter but I think the weight sort of fits the character of the car. It has a very substantial GT feel to it. Also - from a pure performance perspective the Z cleans the clocks of the BRZ and Miata. It also destroyed the bmw 1 series when it came out. Your point regarding Nissan needing to decide is very spot on. Nissan absolutely needs to determine if the next is a $25k entry level sports car or a $40-$50k corvette alternative.

I have an 09 Sport Package. Paid 14k with 50k miles. Used they are great. All you have to do is add the After market Exhaust and Stillen Cold Air and you are at hp levels of the Nismo. They claim 18hp and 17.5 hp for each mod. That is 35 hp in Dyno Test. Lucky me the other owner did this. Watched the video of Motor Week testing a 6 speed manual. It just barked second. Mine will light them up in second. I do however have the shitty last gen Michelin AS3 tires that are like skates however. Had them on a 97 Vette as well and same thing. Just a tidbit. A bitch is rear tire noise. My Vette howled with the Michelins and so does my 370. Went to Continental DWS noise gone and stuck was amazing. Mpg? 31 at 70. 28 at 80.

J Arnold you are one of the lucky ones....most folks that buy a used 370z with " performance" upgrades already on them...well you are buying somebody else's abuse and torment, 370z have a great little v6 that handle a ton of aggressive abuse with out puking up engine collant, or come uncorked...like a camaro of ford stang will. And truth is, I love Chevrolet, Ford's..etc..but reliability and cost/enjoyment..370z takes the prize.

I've always had a soft sport for the Z, so its nice to see a review of a 2018. Personally, I'd like to see Nissan take the next generation Z (assuming there is a next generation) back to basics rather than make a market rival to the Mustang GT or Camaro SS. I feel the Z is at its best when it follows the original design philosophy of affordable six cylinder RWD sports car. But it's difficult to overlook the weight of the current chassis, which is really heavy for a two-seat car. Ideally it would be great if the next Z could be at a similar weight to a front-wheel drive hot hatch, instead of a non-V8 Mustang or Camaro. And with less weight, it would be easy for Nissan to equip the next Z with a higher-revving normally aspirated six cylinder.

Lets come together with ideas on how Nissan can improve the Z car. I'm no expert so here are my ideas. - Update the v6 blueprint to squeeze more power out of a v6 design. - Factory turbo variant? This would shit on the GTR. - Factory body kit that improves aero. Splitters? And make it useful (instead of the Civic Type R's useless body kit with fake air vents) - Weight reduction. Use racing parts in the Nismo variant that are stronger and lighter. - Keep the "traction control off" button but this time make the car remember the setting.

Honestly this car would be right there with the Camaro/Mustang, actually surpass them, if Nissan would just put a 450+ HP V8 in it. They even have the motor, they have put it in different vehicles in Japan. They are just too afraid that people would choose this over the GTR, even though GM has proved that people often have a preference from the Camaro to the Vette. The same thing would happen with the GTR. What Nissan needs to realize is that if you are the best in a segment then your sales will go up. But no they are milking a dry cow at the moment.

the interesting thing is though, the 370z still best fills the V6 sports coupe segment especially now that the genesis coupe hilariously died before it..and it is hard to compare the z to the 3 muscle cars since they are technically v8 entrants with a downgraded motor. funniest part is if we don't include those v8s, the 370 still has the fastest 0-60 & 1/4 mile times out of all the cheap coupes so it isn't surprising why nissan doesn't feel the need to redesign it. they aren't competing directly against the mustang/camaro, it is something different (2 seater/hatch).

Ken - but keep in mind the 17 Mustang GT was barely more expensive than a base Z, and could easily be found under $30k after incentives. The Camaro SS is not far behind after incentives either. And even if the Z is narrowly the fastest accelerating in the $30k sub-V8 segment, it isn't the fastest on a race track.

Sadly, because people are unimaginative and living "checklist" lives for the most part. Manufacturers have turn the full bland knob to the max with this whole: "one vehicle does everything" approach, which means mediocrity unless you can get something like a Porsche Macan' (the one SUV that does it right!) About the Z: Things you can do once you get a used one: 1) Pilot super sport tires/s4's, 2) Exhaust + tune = 30whp/20tq per multiple before/after dyno runs posted on the370z forums, 3) Two Piece rotors/pads/fluid (fixes turn in response and reduces 30lbs of rotating mass) 4) front sway bar plus SPL end-links 5) Pioneer headunit+4 channel amp+ component speakers 6) Some sound deadening will improve the road noise. 7) Wavetrac 3.90 / 4.08 rear diff = it will keep up just fine with the fatty newer vehicles with allegedly more power, and it will put it to the ground unlike the pos one you decided to test (I'm mad you didn't test the sport package version, there must be some conspiracy against doing so, since dealers refuse to let it happen because they have less margin in them?). Personally I love mine, and it's obscene how many looks/thumbs up/questions I get from every socio economic backround. I do agree it needs more power, but I think this is it, 2018 will be the last year. Nissan/Toyota/Honda have all decided the boring unimaginative people deserve boring unimaginative vehicles, and well, that's what they're now getting: volume McSuv / McLife / Checklist $hitboxes that are embarrassing to drive: cannot brake, cannot corner, crap sound systems, crap steering, no power. I just don't get it. Most of them don't even have decent differentials for real actual off road use, so what is the point? To "feel" safe?

Too big? It’s not big at all compared to a camaro or mustang. Too heavy? It only weighs about 3300 pounds. Camaro’s and mustangs weigh 400 more pounds than the 370z. Not economical? It’s a sports car. Not some Prius. Even though it only has 332 horsepower, it’s pretty impressive how it’s able to keep up with these 5.0 mustangs and Camaro SS’. Hell, I’ve even raced quite a few of them with my 370Z with full bolt-ons with a tune.

This "Heritage" model seems to be an attempt to call back to the "Zap" and "Black Pearl" editions of the 280z, but they haven't done much of a job of it - they really should have actually made the effort to duplicate the decals from those models. Anyway, the 370z is not a car you "update". If they decide to do anything, it'll be to release a new Z model. That's how the Z works - the only significant variance is special editions like the 50th AE, Shiro, Black Pearl or 40th AE. Each Z iteration really just is what it is, without apologizing for it. If you tell me you have a manual 280zx turbo, just from those three words, I know pretty much everything I need to know about your car without even having to see it. If you tell me you have, say, a fourth gen Camaro, I have a dozen follow up questions. I would certainly agree that there's no particular reason to buy a 370z new from a dealer, though, that's for sure.

I like the Zs, but honestly they need more factory power. The Corvette (which is should be a direct rival) puts out 460 HP on the base model, the Mustang GT (although not a direct competitor) puts out 460 now and can do a 1/4 under 12 seconds. They can raise it to 400 to 450 and will be imposing, but not a direct threat to the GTR, get more aggressive on the pricing and even go after the entry level 911.

I saw a heritage edition in white at my local Nissan dealership. And it had a spoiler which wasn’t on this test vehicle. I think the white won’t stand out as much as the road-stipe yellow you got a ticket in. And you didn’t share much about the tranny other that to say the clutch wasn’t hard. The previous manual clutch was very hard. But I wished he shared more details like if it’s as hard as the ST’s clutch or as soft as the BRZ or Miata. But a good test drive will let me know. I guess I’m gonna have to go visit my local Nissan dealership to find out for myself.

Kinda sounds like this dude has a personal gripe with Nissan and the 370z. First of all, it has been out for nine years, not ten. The first 370z model was a 2009. I know I'm nitpicking there but why exaggerate? Also, 332 horsepower really isn't bad at all for a car that size. I noticed he only compares it to muscle cars like the Mustang and Camaro, but fails to mention the BRZ is only pumping 200 horsepower, and it's newer than the Z. I'll agree it needs a redesign but for what it is it's a great little sports car.

07wrxtr1 i agree - I own a 2012 with sports package. It is one of the best values in the sports car world. Bigger forged wheels, better tires, sport brakes, synchro rev match all for $3k. I think Nissan has been giving the base car because a sub $30k Z is the only way to stay competitive. It becomes a faster alternative to a brz but is priced below more powerful pony cars. This car needs to become the 400Z and adopt the twin turbo 400hp from the Infiniti red sport.

I have an 09 Sport Package. Heres your review. Guarantee with my Stillen Exhaust and Cold Air it would blow away the Nismo. Less weight. It is sprung softer but that is relative. Handles great however even with the crap old Michelin AS3's I inherited with the car bought used and they are noisy as hell. Turn is much quicker than my old C5 Vette and feels quicker in turns. Great Bose stereo, Love the heated seats with temps in the teens right now. The Stillen exhaust is perfect. Cruising it sounds stock. On it nice smooth and deep and pretty loud. Love the Ray's wheels.

Its time for Nissan to let go of the 370z unfortunately and hopefully they deliver something better. Never been in a modern mustang or comaro but man do i love this car. It rides great handling is very on point. Ive heard rumors that this is the last year for the 370 and that a new z car is in the works dont know how much truth is in that but theres been a lot of talk. I use this as my edc it costs me like 50 dollars to fill up from just above E im getting around 20 mpg. The main thing i have to disagree with is the seats, they could be more comfortable but then again i feel thats nit picking something that is made for performance not luxury. Bottom line, get one and drive the fuck out of it its awesome
