That is how manufacturers initially used CVTs (as they were designed) and too many people (like ROMAN...lol) complained about the "rubberband" affect. They can't wrap their head around modifying your foot action to use a CVT properly. So the manufacturers artificially program shift points to minimize this complaint from older customers. My folks have a Rogue SL AWD and they average 28mpg but anytime I drive it I average 36+ in the same driving conditions.

We had a 2017 Rogue rental from Vegas to LA. We had a teenager and two adults with luggage. Averaged about 33mpg. The Rogue also handled a high speed departure onto the soft shoulder (daughter was sick). I'm not a Nissan fan but was impressed with the Rogue.

Personally I thinks Nissan should have programmed CVT shift points with a big enough jolt to shake people's fillings out. If that's what idiots want, give it to them. But have a switch to able to turn it off for the rest of us who do not want to live in the stone age.

CVTs without shifts are maddening. I drove a CVT that always sought the most efficient point, even when I wanted more relative power. Having a car that is continuously variable combined with a gas pedal that is continuously variable means that everything is continuously variable. Every time that you adjust the pedal, the transmission then adjusts, which makes you change the pedal, which makes it adjust. Not a good driving experience, which is why I refused to drive another CVT.

Douglas Milewski - I appreciate the Subaru cvt having a manual mode. It allows you to hold a gear. Great to have in the hills, where a regular cvt would be screaming for torque.

The 2.5L Nissan rogue SLAWD GETS BETWEEN 24 and 28 miles per gallon on average on a 75 mile an hour flat highway. If you get behind a semi real close, you can raise it all the way up to 36 miles per gallon. this is on a five-year study with two of these cars driving normally.

I’ve own both Rogue and Altima if anyone goes by the on board average mpg it is way off. The most accurate reading would be taking the reading of actual mileage driving divided by amount of gas when refill. Normally reading is always lesser than what it read by 3-6 mpg on both car.

A lot of people just don’t drive thinking of mpg. I participated in driving my company car with a sensor uploading data about acceleration , braking , and speed for 3 months. - off acceleration as soon as you see a red light when possible and downhills - cruise control - try to keep RPMs low starting from a stop - speed limit and 5mph over to keep pace People that follow you doing this sometimes become irritated and speed past you only to stop at the light and it turns green, you pass them right up. Like the video,

Done something similar on flat highway, staying 65mph and under, using the cruise control easy to get 10mpg more than rated in a gas vehicle. Just remember, stopped at traffic lights or idling in parking lots is 0mpg and kills the ave. mpg.

You have so many hills there, and you did start near the top of an elevation, making your ride a net down hill ride. You pretty much have to stop half way, turn around and finish where ya started to equalize for elevations, and approximate your intended "real world" challenge. Still, it was great fun.

Sarah - I'm enjoying your reviews on this channel. You do a good job, you're sincere and because of your affinity and experience with cars you know what you're talking about without coming across like some of these arrogant or wanna-be-funny dudes (like they're all retired pro drivers turned comics or actual automotive mag reviewers). The one car I'd really like to see reviewed on the channel is the new Genesis G70 in the 3.3L twin-turbo, RWD. Hopefully they'll get you one to play with soon. I've lived in CA for the past 23 years, but I'm originally from Phoenix -- I used to play around on Mt. Lemon and partied too much in Tucson. After living in oh-so-stupidly-expensive north L.A. county I can still say I'd never go back. P.S. My daughter's name is also Sarah -- she's 22 now. Great little girl...born preemie @ 23 weeks and has CP but is a great joy to so many...some say "What's in a name?" I say everything.... Keep up the good work.

I know for a fact the nissan mpg meters are wrong. With my 13 Altima and my wife's 15 Sentra the mpg meter will show 2-5 mpg's over what the trip meter and gas pump say with resetting the meter each time we get gas. If the meter is not reset at every fill up, it shows "average" mpg's for however many miles the vehicle has driven since it was last reset, increasing the variation between true mpg and recorded mpg.

I'm in michigan but just traveled to denver with my tuned 340xi, we have 93 octane 10% ethanol here... I noticed Iowa and westward it was 91 octane but most pumps said little or no ethanol content for premium. I got 34-35mpg at an average speed of 80-85mph... that's 2-3mpg better than my 93 octane e10 here on equally flat land with equal speeds. Food for thought.

I am going to guess they simulate the shift points because customers too frequently complained that the vehicle was “stuck” in first gear in the absence of “shifts” that they were accustomed. I guess the automaker simulate shifts to decrease the complaints with “transmission issues” in their CVT. I think Subaru did the same. (I am speculating here lol)

Wow, you were getting such good mileage at first. Maybe in eco mode, the shift points could be disabled? Yes, having the blind spot detection light inside the car makes so much sense. Mine is not only on the mirror, it is on the farthest sides of the mirrors and if the mirrors are difficult to see due to weather, then the light isn't easy to see.

Interesting because I tried this too not long after I bought my Rogue. Same year only the SV model. I live in West Virginia so the roads and hills play a huge part in not getting the MPG that you got. My average seems to be closer to 28 MPG and my best showed 33.8 MPG. My vehicle now has 5200 miles on it so I might try this again only driving a flatter, less curvy interstate. Thanks for the info!

Beware of the Rogue's automatic braking system! My daughter's 2018 model is activating the brakes for no reason! Dealer cannot replicate the problem but it's now becoming a complaint by other owners. You can bypass the automatic braking system via the dash controls, but, you must do this each & every time the vehicle is turned off & started again. Can the actual radar sensor be disconnected to keep the automatic braking turned off without having to key this info in each time the car is started?

Not a bad first attempt. More like this would be good since MPG is a BIG point on these vehicles and the MPG wars have ushered in the age of CVT transmissions. A few points for improvement. Yes please try and find a gas station to as station route. Also, how many miles was the trip? I checked Google maps and it looks like only 34 miles. A longer trip closer to 100 miles makes for more accurate numbers. I also like the idea of a trip with lots of stops and agressive driving since parents dropping 2-3 kids off all around town need to know what MPG is like when you are 'running errands'. Your MPG from the other two runs would be interesting data. And if you don't find data attractive...
